Due to tight budget I am only looking the CX-30 entry level 2.0 NA FWD only. It is priced closely to the M3 Hatch entry level, but there are things about CX-30 base model that turned me off and I think If i buy it i would have been shortchanged by Mazda Heres why 1. No leather upholstery (M3 base model has) 2. No rear aircon vents (M3 base has) 3. No paddle shifters (M3 base has) 4. No sunroof (M3 base has) 5. No heads up display (M3 base has) 6. Larger than life body claddings (looks awful paired with soul red crystal body, which is the body color i prefer) 7. The difference in ground clearance is not even that big (2 inches i believe?) 8. You really have to buy the top trim in order to get those bells and whistles which is super expensive So i decided to just get the M3 hatch EDIT: 9. CX-30 has no reverse parking sensors (M3 base has)
I was in the dealership, just to sit inside of both of those cars. As a 186cm tall man with wide shoulders, I have no clue what all these reviews are about with legroom or headroom. I ordered a Mazda 3 with e-Skyactiv X and automatic after trying the manual in a 3 and automatic in CX-5. I still keep watching videos of them just for fun :) What I really liked about the automatic was how smooth it was. I don't mind that it consumes a bit more or goes higher in rpm when accelerating, I prefer the comfortable and smooth drive. I also tow trailers from time to time and using an automatic for slow speeds (walking speeds) is just easier. What I dislike about the CX-30 is those black plastic bumpers all around the car. It may look more robust but it doesn't contribute to the "sex appeal" of the car for me.
If I want to fold the rear seats without interference, I just remove the rear headrests; both these vehicles still allow that, unlike some competitors. I do wish that they still used the lower-profile headrests like the CX-3 or the previous Mazda3, or fold-down ones like the Ford Fiesta or Escape (I presume the Kuga is the same).
Picked up my Mazda 3 over a week ago....the new 2021 e- Skyactiv G. I’m loving the car and the performance is good for what I need. I came from VW and feel they have gone downhill in quality with cabin fit an cheap plastics, noise insulation is very good around town and cruising. I can’t fault the cabin so far with the Mazda 3, the seating position is very comfortable and you feel part of the car, a very relaxed smooth drive. I’ve only covered 300 miles and MPG in the UK has been fine.....around town I’ve managed 48-52mpg. I’m expecting maybe a slight improvement once the engine has settled and “run in” I think the e-skyactiv G for 2021 has been improved to obtain these figures. The software in the mild hybrid must have been updated, Well worth a look.....and a consideration!!
My last 2 cars were VW. Hard plastics on the doors and dash my 1st was better than the one I just replaced. The Mazda 3 has soft touch materials and cloth on the doors and the dash has leather effect which feels very nice. A lot of reviews comment the MK8 Golf being not as good as the MK7. Even Audi has fallen this way. Little things like door pocket lining and mats in the cup holders etc. The Mazda 3 is a nice place to be....One thing about sound proofing is driving in the rain......the sound it makes on the body work can tell you a lot how it deals with noise.
The internal layout of Mazdas are one of the best in automotive business nowadays. I think that Mercedes should pay a lot of attention and use some of the esthetic ideas from its Japanese rival...as far as interiors are concerned:)
What I really like about Mazda interiors is the simple ergonomic yet elegant design and crucially physical controls even for the infotainment system. Compare this with the awful interior and controls on the new VW Golf for example with all its touch sensitive controls.
Been doing some car shopping for my wife's car and was really surprised with the quality and feel of the mazdas interior its definerley up there with the segment above
What an excellent review. Thank you. Am about to pull the trigger on a CX30 and this review beautifully summarised the pros and cons for each. I am happy I am making the right choice and I have been very impressed with what you get as standard features. Loved this video as it got to the main issues, but did so with balance and sound conclusions. You're a great RUclips find🙂👍
I own the Mazda 3 2019 model year, but rolled out the shop 2020. Very happy with the car for the price, tech features included in the price, compared to many competitors. No fake engine noises, engines sounds cool and a real automatic with paddles are good, but would need an update to be honest. It rides a bit harsh with the 18 inch wheels, From what I know, the later models had their suspension retuned and now it has some more torque and 8 more horse powers. The interior is good, but keep in mind the plastic glass over the instrument cluster scratches extremely easy, same with the piano black stuff around the shifter. Comfortable for long rides and quiet cabin. We live in the city, are just a couple and we very rarely have passengers, if you have passengers in the back often, consider a bigger/different car. For resale reasons in my country, the automatic is good to equip the car with.
I spent a few hours making covers for my interior piano black. Beautiful car and design but that plastic is just a total pain. I've seen some people have simply removed it, wrapped it in vinyl wrap and installed it again. It looks fantastic.
Thank you so much for your very detailed and informative comparison of the Mazda CX 30 and Mazda 3 hatch. I chose the Mazda 3 hatch myself mostly because the manual transmission is not available on the Mazda CX 30 here in Canada. I’m very pleased with my choice, once again thank you, I really enjoyed your video:))
It's always crazy to see how much the price increases when a compact hatchback becomes a compact crossover. I'd never pay that much additional money for a slightly higher ride and a tiny little bit of additional space, which many crossovers don't even offer.
In my place CX 30 and Mazda 3 hatchback costs the same. The sedan is like 1500$ cheaper. Still most people prefer buying the 3 hatchback out of the three
Awesome review! Still trying to make up my mind, but the cx30 really makes more sense as I need to do fairly long distance journeys. Your review has pretty much helped me choose, so thanks a lot!!
The best thing I like about the current mazda cars is that most of their safety equipment/software, in fact most of the features on their higher end cars. The only differentiating their other cars are the engine and the body of the cars. So buying their cheaper cars like the Mazda 2 doesn't feel like your missing out.
Your videos helped me last year when I was deciding between a 3 and a CX-3. I went with the CX-3 and have not regretted my decision. I remember that you preferred the cloth seats in that viseo as well. It must really reflect your tastes. I prefer leather or even leatherette, which I feel is realistic.
Thanks and enjoy your vehicle =) Well fabric is more breathable when seating, leatherette you can clean easier. Animal skin leather is to be avoided for ethical reasons.
I'm flirting with the idea of getting one of these. Thank you so much for the detailed comparison, Thomas! Your videos are super helpful! Vielen Dank, und LG aus Berlin!
I like your door shutting test. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 and it sounds the same. The door handles are still flimsy by the look of it. Hard to believe they have not fixed this. Compared to my other car (2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara this is rubbish). I am happy with the rest of the car.
I just purchased the hatch version the cx-30 just feels slow and clunky, braking feels slow. compared to the hatch. I like the hatch just feels like a better car for my needs. And it's gorgeous.
0:50, the detail and colour grading in these shots is superb! i understand trying to satisfy the algorithm must be hard on you guys, but it's noticeable you're trying to make the most of it!
Pretty similar to be honest, even the CX30 is quite sporty for a SUV with precise and sharp steering. The choice will be driven by mainly SPACE, it is so cramped behind in the 3 and dark, as well as DESIGN. the rear / side of the 3 still bothers me; and the price delta to get the SUV is really marginal and speaks for itself. Now, mazda needed to make some savings to propose a SUV at that price, and when looking at dashboard, doors you realise that the 3 has better materials / plushest.I had not realised it at first glance. I need volume, cargo capacity to load bike etc and went for the cX30, but otherwise would have opted for the 3 for the driver involvement and the red interior. Anyway; clever combo, offer from Mazda.
Very cool review! Mazda cars are always kind of eye-catch! The car's exteriors and interiors are not bad at all, with sleek and cool horizontal design lines dominance everywhere, and I like it! Cheers, Thomas, to Autogefühl! 🎵🍻✨
Ok. So i went to buy one. If you are 5 foot 10 or less cx30 would be great. I wasn't comfortable in it. But i recommend it if it is your first crossover and you are active. Awd is awesome. I was buying it till i tried driving it. I liked everything about it but the seat. Ride height was awesome. Btw, i ended up getting a cx5 for the same price. 🙂
It's a pity that Mazda has discontinued the very smooth and torquey 2.2 litre diesel engine, which outperformed any of the petrol versions except for the 2.5 turbo (not sold in Europe, and with much higher fuel consumption).
They had lots of probs with them in the CX-5 which they eventually resolved, but then countries started complaining about NOx levels and diesels in general and the price went up so they may have become less popular. However, when fixed, there were brilliant engines.
I have the Mazda 3 Astina SP25 sedan. Personally, I prefer the sportier 3 to the boring SUV, even for longer trips. I will have to test the Skyactiv-X. If it has better performance, then I'd go for it and the fuel-saving would be a bonus. We also have a Mazda 6 wagon we use for family holidays for extra luggage space. We're considering the Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge to replace the wagon, but the price is considerably higher. I believe with Mazdas you get a lot of features for your money and they are all really cheap to buy regardless of which you go for. It would be nice to have less road noise, but just turn the stereo up or open the sunroof and it isn't an issue.
Thanks, great review as always!! I wished that you talked a bit more about the other options that are in the same price margin, since it's really a great deal, but I think there's something missing .. the German driving enjoyment and experience 🇩🇪✌🏻schöne Grüße!
For driving enjoyment, the Mazda 3 beats the direct German competition (Golf, Octavia, BMW 1 series) hands up, unless you go premium of course and spend another 10,000 dollars.
In my country the CX-30 has upper models available in AWD whereas the 3 hatch and sedan are only available in FWD. A 2.5 NA engine is an option on all models.
Nice review. Thank you. I recently tested both (the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus) models and was expecting a bigger difference, but there really isn't much. What I did find though, and this was a big difference, that at night, the interior LEDs seem a lot brighter in the Mazda3. I was told by Mazda that they are the same. What I figured out was that the 2 inches of headroom really makes a big difference on how these light up the cockpit at night. I wasn't able to test drive them on a dark road, but I would imagine that there would be a pretty big difference in that realm as well as the Mazda3 sits a lot closer to the ground vs the CX-30's.
I’ve just ordered the CX-30 with the new 186 engine. Whilst I agree it isn’t the biggest crossover, I’m not very tall and so no one has any problem sitting in the back… being short has its benefits 😂 As for the thick black panels, I also agree it’s maybe too thick, but with the right colour it blends in nicely
Great comparison, thanks! Surprised that the doors sound better on the CX-30 since the 3 hatchbacks are made in Japan while the CX-30's are made in Mexico (at least the ones we get in North America); I would've thought the ones made in Japan would've been better built!
The number one factor in terms of door closing sound isn’t the quality of the door itself, but rather the thickness and quality of the door seals (rubber), as well as how much or how little) sound absorbing material was used INSIDE of the door(s). My Toyota Prius was far too loud for my liking so I added some for less than fifty bucks and now it’s Lexus vault-like when I close my doors. Totally worth it, in my opinion. Saved more then $20,000 by not buying a used Lexus instead!
i live in canada, i have a 2021 mazda 3 sedan gt version awd with the 2.5 turbo engine. it has 250hp and 320 ft lbs of torque with premium fuel. i love it.
@@fevzikamalov965 i had a 2019 cx-5 gt turbo. my nephew bought it from me. i will definitely get the cx-50. i love my mazda 3, but i prefer a small suv. the mazda 3 is surprisingly very comfortable, even with the skinny 215-45-18 tires. the cx-5 is much better in snow. the mazda 3 float on snow while the cx-5 has tons of grip because of its greater mass. even with awd, mazda 3 is just ok in snow. much better vision in cx-5. in cx-5 you dominate your surroundings. in mazda 3 you are seated near the ground and what you can see is way more limited. mazda 3 is great car, but i believe sedans will eventually all dissapear. i think the cx-30 is incredible small suv. more pratical, more capable.
@@stromghouls sedans will never dissappear. some people prefer a better handling car over a stupid crossover that isnt that much more practical. But oh well, gotta follow whats trendy, right?
I have test driven the Mazda 3. Really awesome car from driving feel and luxury stand point. The only problems are the clastrophobic interior (very small windows) and high price (~25k€) for decent equipment.
@@sic22l Most consumer affordable turbo engines have huge throttle lag (1-5 seconds) which is in my opinion much more important than only 0-100 acceleration. EG Between 8 and 10 seconds for 0-100 acceleration there will not be a huge difference in experience. But when comparing under 100ms from >1s throttle reaction times there will be a huge difference. And in real world you usually need throttle response. Only when accelerating for autobahn you need a good 0-100km/s spec. I have also test driven BMW 1 with 140HP 3 cylinder gasoline engine. The experience was really sad. When you floor the pedal you have a 1-2s delay in acceleration. In the end I have decided to go for used BMW 3 150HP diesel engine and the story is totally different. When you floor the pedal you can instantaneously hear tires squeaking :O
@@GiGaSzS 5 seconds? Come on. I don't know which cars you drove but in vast majority of cases the lag is caused by the automatic transmission which are usually aggressively programmed to save fuel. With modern turbocharged engines the delay is minimal and surge of torque right afterwards makes up for everything. Some of them like 1.2 Puretech from PSA can even be considered rapid. Meanwhile in Mazda there's a quick response for a split second and nothing else - no acceleration afterwards because there's no torque below 4500 rpm. Actually turbodiesels confirm what I said - they have a turbo, more - by design diesels are slower to response and rev up. If you say they're instantanous it means turbo is not a problem, it just gives much more torque at low revs.
@@sic22l You are right, the BMW 1 I have tried was an automatic. Even in the sport mode the throttle lag was there. But, the dealer did not want to give me a manual to test (didnt have it) and even insisted that buying a manual is dumb. So I just went away and found a car that suits better to my preferences. Upon your suggestion I will try to test drive the Ford's manual ecoboost so I get a feeling about the turbos.
The Mazda3 is short people's dream LOL. I'm 5'6" and had the chance to test drive it. Gotta say, it's perfect! Even my previous Civic hatch was a little big for me.
The seat position is identicle, yes the suv is higher off ground but the seat position is the same. Compare body position in both 8:57 and 7:48. What are you talking about?
When he is talking about seating position, he is also talking about sitting higher...because the car itself is higher, so the driver will be too. It is not just about body position inside the car, it is about how high or low he sits relative to the ground outside the car. In the hatch, the car is lower to the ground. Therefore, the seating position is lower. It makes sense the way he is doing and saying it.
@@GeordiLaForgery Because he feels more upright sitting in the Mazda CX-30. He says that it is more upright, and he is the one actually there and comparing the cars. Sit in both vehicles yourself, and you can test the difference. Basing the seating position just by a video is...not accurate. Experience it.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII We are in lockdown and I can't go and sit in it. He is saying it's a more upright comforatble position and I can't see any difference in his body posture being more upright and therefore can't be more comfortable. This is why I asked.
I personally like a bit of cladding on my more rugged cars as it’s usually pretty cheap and easy to replace. Just remember to coat it in uv guard so it doesn’t get up damage.
@@stellauniversal I was thinking about the manufacturer. If Mazda didn't appreciate this car, it would have given a lower price. So, it's not underrated by Mazda. So, again, it's not underrated (at least by Mazda) and not cheap.

It is priced closely to the M3 Hatch entry level, but there are things about CX-30 base model that turned me off and I think If i buy it i would have been shortchanged by Mazda
Heres why
1. No leather upholstery (M3 base model has)
2. No rear aircon vents (M3 base has)
3. No paddle shifters (M3 base has)
4. No sunroof (M3 base has)
5. No heads up display (M3 base has)
6. Larger than life body claddings (looks awful paired with soul red crystal body, which is the body color i prefer)
7. The difference in ground clearance is not even that big (2 inches i believe?)
8. You really have to buy the top trim in order to get those bells and whistles which is super expensive
So i decided to just get the M3 hatch
EDIT:
9. CX-30 has no reverse parking sensors (M3 base has)
Base model is cloth upholstery now for 2024 unfortunately :(
EDIT:
9. CX-30 has no reverse parking sensors (M3 base has)
I was in the dealership, just to sit inside of both of those cars. As a 186cm tall man with wide shoulders, I have no clue what all these reviews are about with legroom or headroom. I had no issues in both models, I was actually surprised due to the expectation of being cramped not being fulfilled. The only potential issue I thought of are the child seats being mounted there.
Loving the new camera work concept!
Sadly I hate it. Likely will be unsubscribing as the videos are now unwatchable. :(

I really like the new production of your video. More dynamic and interesting. Must demand more work though so thank you!
I ordered a Mazda 3 with e-Skyactiv X and automatic after trying the manual in a 3 and automatic in CX-5. I still keep watching videos of them just for fun :)
What I really liked about the automatic was how smooth it was.
What year is yours? I read somewhere that the Automatic was rubbish! Please say otherwise
Congratulations on your purchase of the 3 !
Can you compare it to the VW cars? I am currrently driving a VW and considering Mazda 3 as my next vehicle.
Excellent review
I went for the CX-30 FWD
The internal layout of Mazdas are one of the best in automotive business nowadays. I think that Mercedes should pay a lot of attention and use some of the esthetic ideas from its Japanese rival...as far as interiors are concerned:)
What I really like about Mazda interiors is the simple ergonomic yet elegant design and crucially physical controls even for the infotainment system. Compare this with the awful interior and controls on the new VW Golf for example with all its touch sensitive controls.
I agree with you and it's ironic that Mazda take their inspiration from Mercedes for their interiors..
@@ricardoroberto100 Really? The interior of the Mazda 3 reminds me of the R8.
Been doing some car shopping for my wife's car and was really surprised with the quality and feel of the mazdas interior its definerley up there with the segment above
Truth is what you saying
@@PaulA-zp7hn i can't be bothered to dismantle the console and do that to be honest.
Fantastic side by side review, really needed to see that. Much appreciated

Bought a Mazda 3, most fun car for the money :) Pity we only have the NA engine where I am from.

Nice enjoy the 3
The Mazda 3 hatch is such a stunning looking car in Soul Red
What a brilliant review man! Thanks for sharing such an unbiased opinion.
It's always crazy to see how much the price increases when a compact hatchback becomes a compact crossover. I'd never pay that much additional money for a slightly higher ride and a tiny little bit of additional space, which many crossovers don't even offer.
i agree with you in our country the CX-30 mid and top variant is priced close to the bigger CX-5
Nah. You get more of your money’s worth with the Cx 30 it’s a no brainer.
In my place CX 30 and Mazda 3 hatchback costs the same. The sedan is like 1500$ cheaper. Still most people prefer buying the 3 hatchback out of the three

Hi. Have you got the 3 Sky-activ X or G? I have a diesel Mazda2 and am worried about the consumptions of a petrol 3/CX-30..
I have a 2018 Mazda 3 with Skyactiv-G 165KM and it’s possible to go under 6l/100km. Skyactiv-X should be even better.
@@sebr359 mine is the G.
Thanks and enjoy your vehicle =)
Well fabric is more breathable when seating, leatherette you can clean easier. Animal skin leather is to be avoided for ethical reasons.
Detailed, honest and very informative review ! And surely a review of great help ! Well done, guys ! Well done !!!

I'm flirting with the idea of getting one of these. Thank you so much for the detailed comparison, Thomas! Your videos are super helpful! Vielen Dank, und LG aus Berlin!

It's very difficult to make a car light to improve fuel consumption and have doors that shut with a clunk, there has to be a compromise somewhere.
Thank u very much m8!

Greetings!
Nicely presented and a good breakdown of the cars features
I'd take Mazda 3 sedan any day. It's just gorgeous! And I'm a sedan guy.
Thanks Thomas for your great review 👏

I wasn't able to test drive them on a dark road, but I would imagine that there would be a pretty big difference in that realm as well as the Mazda3 sits a lot closer to the ground vs the CX-30's.
thanks for the feedback!
Excellent. Answered a few things for me on both vehicles. 👍
The best review ever, Thank you guys.
The most beautiful in his class! Especially in Soul Red Crystal. And Luckily with a Normal size engine! And no smal lawn mower engine.

Great comparison. Good job., nice review 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The folding load floor is to stop small things moving around.
Always enjoy your reviews 👍

Thinking of a CX-30 or CX-5
Welcome!!
i live in canada, i have a 2021 mazda 3 sedan gt version awd with the 2.5 turbo engine. it has 250hp and 320 ft lbs of torque with premium fuel. i love it.
do you ever second guess yourself in terms of the cx-30 being a more comfortable ride?
Naturally aspirated engines also feel pretty slow especially when you're switching from something with a turbo.
@@sic22l
Most consumer affordable turbo engines have huge throttle lag (1-5 seconds) which is in my opinion much more important than only 0-100 acceleration.
@@sic22l
You are right, the BMW 1 I have tried was an automatic.
@@GiGaSzS Also try the 1.2 Puretech from PSA (in the new C4 maybe?) and 1.0 TSI, they have good opinions as well.
Great review Thomas.

@@ClaireYunFarronXIII Why then does he say there is a more upright seating position? Sitting upright is a term used commonly for body position.
