India Wants To Use Flesh Eating Turtles To Rid The Ganges Of Decomposing Bodies (HBO)

- India’s Ganges river is the main source of water for half a billion people. It’s also holy to the country’s almost 1 billion Hindus, who bathe in the river to be cleansed of their sins and believe that if a body is cremated and released into the water at Varanasi it can escape the cycle of reincarnation.
But the river’s cleansing abilities are limited by the fact that the Ganges is one of the world’s most polluted waterways: A billion gallons of raw sewage and industrial waste currently pour into it every day.
The Indian government’s most recent initiative to tackle the pollution problem, Namami Gange, was announced in 2014 and promised $3 billion in funding. So far, it has yielded very few results, and a 2017 investigation concluded that just $205 million had been spent.
Still, the government has launched some pretty outlandish plans, including breeding thousands of flesh-eating turtles to deal with the 200 tons of half-cremated, decomposing bodies that enter the river at Varanasi every year, and commissioning an official pop anthem for the river to rouse patriotic sentiment.
With a growing scandal on its hands, Narendra Modi’s government is scrambling to finish planned Ganges projects before the 2019 general elections. But environmental scientist and campaigner Rakesh Jaiswal said he hasn’t seen any change so far. “The situation is worsening, and in the last 24 years I have seen no improvement at all,” he told VICE News.

Having said about the political condition of india , it is hard to get proper insight just by interviewing few guys or so called funded NGO's. Why not plan a visit properly and investigate it deeply along with government records . Mr.Nitin Gadkari , the honourable minister who is looking after the project has done so much. In order to extend the help to other bodies like water we can use technology and resources like coal which can be recycle by buring on a grill for Barbe cue then later return into the Earth safely. The Indian government and media would rather lie to their people and perpetuate the laughable (And homicidally negligent) myth that the Ganges is “self-purifying”. Nothing could be further from the truth, according to Wikipedia, 1/3 of all deaths in India are attributable to waterborne illnesses annually. 80% of India’s population becomes ill or contracts disease from the Ganges.
With all the toxic waste, the turtles will probably become sentient, and start fighting crime and eating pizza while a rat teaches them martial arts.

I'm from Ladakh India and at my place, we believe river, mountains basically nature is an oracle that brings luck and protects us from harm that's why we believe the river should be crystal clear and should not be polluted, and from childhood, we are being told by our parents if you pollute the river and environment then it's like you are damaging and harming the oracle. The one whole who protects us from all the harm that's why till date Ladakh is non-polluted as compared to the rest of India

Clean up projects should include removal of solid wastes from the banks of the Gangas River. Remove plastics and other obvious garbage. Also, perhaps consider creating a restricted range in which the water is aerated with tiny bubbles of air. Aeration improves pollution load tolerance in aquariums.
The land of India and it's people are beautiful. The Holy Ganga should reflect that beauty. 💖

India is far richer than the Philippines but our government managed to save boracay--which is a major tourist destination, manila bay, and Pasig river. You know everything us possible with proper coordination of the local governments and the communities. The president even closed boracay for rehabilitation purposes. They removed the permits of those illegally dumping waste water to the sea whether company or private entity.

India could explore ideas about where such products can be used while respecting fears and dread about them. Prepared solud waste is probably potentially less infectious than raw sewage where people are willing to drink untreated water.
