We definetly need more larger scale solutions like this. I do regular river clean-ups myself and most people don´t even know how bad the problem really is. The amount of trash just dumped into nature is enormous :(
Why don’t we use this waste as renewable energy like we could and should. Everything in this world can be re-used if we do it right. I’m glad all of this is being talked about though because that’s a start.
@@Peter-td3yk I agree. Waste to Energy facilities are very common in Europe. Almost no trash in Germany is just buried in a hole. Thus the amount of trash gets reduced and we get Energy out of the process
Now this is a worthwhile effort. Would love to see the entire world get on board with this and start cleaning up all of our waterways. STOP all the wars and put all that money and effort into cleaning up the planet.
I think all former white collar and IT workers will end up transitioning to this kind of work. I want military ships to be repurposed to this kind of work.
It's almost looks like the Earth is starting to get rid of us cause it probably Senses we are the problem. At 8 billion we may be too much for the Earth and I think it may be planning on our Extinction.
I love that we are finally phasing out single use plastics here in Canada and other countries. It always shocks me to see all the plastic water and pop bottles. Here those are worth money (as are milk cartons, juice boxes etc). You take em in and you get a few cents per bottle/carton (up to 25 cents per, depending on size). A couple bags of them adds up quick for some extra gas money. There is an extra environent charge at the grocery til though, so actually we are just getting our deposit back, but its not as noticeable, when its only a few cents per bottle/carton when buying. A plastic bottle return is a small step to incentivising them not ending up in rivers etc., but along with bans on single use plastics, better recycling methods, more education on waste footprints per person, and more and more innovation, I hope we get there faster.

Hemp plastics or biodegradable plastic should be invented. Also our environmental education of our Southern neighbors sucks. What have we done to help Mexico and Central America, its looks like nothing until now. The solution shouldn’t be that the government and the consumers pay for the waste management, but the companies producing the waste. So for every kg of plastics produced the producing company should put 1$ in a UN fund to combat the waste. If a company recycles plastics or reuses them they get one dollar back for every kg of plastic they reuse/recycle. It gives an incentive to produce less plastic waste and to buy good with much less plastic, because those will be cheaper.
Good thought but the problem is people. Companies have no control once it's out there example brother apartment has 2 dumpsters one for trash other for recycling. Trash always full recycling only a little. We as people need to do better

It's a shame that government doesn't take more action to protect citizens from this waste. Corporations reap insane profits while average citizens suffer the hazards or polluted rivers. Instead of an after the fact clean up, Mega international corporations should be held accountable for the waste they generate. This concept is well known as "cradle to cradle" manufacturing, where every product has a pre-planned life cycle just as nature does.
Forget government, most of that trash is from people themselves. Government is merely an extension of the will of the people (if you're not stuck in Russia, NK or PRC). If you live in an area by a river, it is your choice to make a change in your community and organize a united cleaning front to protect your waterways.

@@notmyducks3 Corporations were the ones who first pushed people to throw away plastic. When single use plastic was first introduced, people didn't throw it away because that's not how they thought. They had to advertise to people the idea of throwing it away. Now a lot of plastic isn't even recyclable. So even if we don't throw it in a river and recycle it, most of that isn't recycled. Recycling was also sold by corporations when people saw the litter and pollution affects of plastic, even though recycling is in large part a façade. So, then think about these people in poorer countries along these rivers. When did plastics get introduced there? Maybe a generation ago you could throw a lot of things into the river because they were biodegradable. Now with plastic and the influx of cheap throwaway material/products (also the fault of corporations and government) the problem is too big for any one person to change. Sure don't throw it in the river, but these places don't have the infrastructure for the amount of waste produced, not just because of habit, but also because of how corporations make and package products. And so many things have steered away from locally sourced to being shipped in via mass production. Why does a poor country have so many plastic water bottles? They can't drink water from local sources? Could they once upon a time? Can they not do that now because of run off from factories that produce fast fashion and cheap products that Western Corporations/governments outsourced to poor countries that have lax regulations that wouldn't be allowed in Western countries? I'm all for personal responsibility. But let's not deflect or diminish the impact of the current system of function of things which were not individually decided by people, but occurred because of big moves by corporations and governments.

We try this through a holistic approach, using garbage collection boats, and a river platform, together with AI - but also within the fields of recycling, environmental education, and local partnerships. 🌊
We need to tax single use plastic, so that its use is disincentivized. A large percentage of the waste we saw on the video comes from only a few companies who just don’t seem very interested in doing anything about it.
taxing single use plastic is just kicking the can, what we need is to ban it altogether and mandate ALL companies to follow Cradle2Cradle principles. research on it, give companies a year to fix that and if they fail then fire the entire board of directors, expropriate their stocks and put a new board of directors that can solve the problem.
Single use plastic is banned in the entire EU. The rest of the world needs to follow. Also I can't believe major countries haven't got an actual recycling system for bottles and cans. Here we pay for the bottle whether it be plastic or glas or cans and when we return it again in the store we get our money back on the items ranging from $0.14 to $0.41. This means people want to recycle their bottles and cans and that other people want to pick up one of these on the street to return it
This is such an important project and needs support and funding on a massive scale. Its potential to improve environments and change lives is fantastic. Having said that the channel currently has less than 500k subscribers which is incredibly disappointing. Thank all of these companies for what they do! I wonder if keeping the rivers and oceans cleaner on such a large scale across the world is having an effect on global warming? All of this garbage no longer floating on the tops of rivers, where usually it would cause shading for the water just below it, in turn keeping it cooler.
wow the guatamala river clip was just astonishing. Maybe for their trap gate system they can install few more before it that captures larger trash first then filters out the smaller ones down the line so one gate doesnt have to hold the entire trash build up.
Maybe you guys could look into this: I used to work for a shipping company, and shipping companies just dumps trash in the ocean when they are far enough out, because they are allowed to do that. They have incinirators on the ship, but its cheaper and faster to just dump it..
A young man was told it can't be done. Well he is doing it. And it is working well . With a positive attitude Boyan Slat and his team have been highly motivated at solving collection of garbage . Videos don't lie. He has done this without government funding. This is also reducing greenhouse emissions caused by the rotting plastics. Just relaying the message. I've seen and smelled the results

Let's go to the source, the household. When I was young, your milk and soda was delivered to our house each morning in glass containers. So each night we would place the empties on the front steps and each morning we would bring in the refilled containers. The milk and soda companies would sterilize the containers and reuse them daily. Didn't use plastic so there was never an pollution issue. Some of the old ways are best ways.
That's not the source though. The source is the oil companies heavily pushing plastics, most of which are not even recyclable due to the cost vs buying new.

The way I see it being fixed is time and awareness of the problem: When a newborn baby enters the world, they absorb information about how their parents and other family and community members handle trash and recyclable items. They therefore have this imprinted on their memory, and whatever trash handling methods their surroundings are using is going to be carried on with them for the rest of their lives. It is therefore imperative that from a very young age, that children learn, sooner rather than later, how trash and recyclables should be handled. If they can be made aware of the fact that that it should go in the proper bin, then that will help matters greatly. The other part of the equation is to reduce the number and type of recyclable items. This is going to take about as long as it takes a baby to adulthood, possibly longer. Industry awareness of what environmental impact their plastics have on the environment, and handling procedures implemented by government agencies on all levels will help ensure that industries are going to have places for their waste stream to go to, instead of ending up in a waterway, ocean, or landfill. It takes longer for industry to change, because it is dependent on what trash and recyclable handling procedures the people running those industries have been imprinted from birth with. It will take a while for them to get around to fixing the problem, could be 20 or 30 years, possibly more. But eventually it will be solved, and in due time waste will no longer be a problem. Individuals have to do their part for this to happen. Automated sorting systems can only sort waste and recyclables if they get fed them. Transportation and sorting technologies will have to keep up with the demand for sorting and processing of both waste and recycling streams.

I remember reading about the company years ago when it first started. I remember when version 1.0 for the pacific failed to do what they wanted to do. I wrote to them, telling them no success is achievement without a mountain of failures. When 2.0 video was released with the cargo boat filled with trash, and how much it picked up i was ecstatic. May we leave this planet better than how we inherited.

The Ocean CleanUp obviously gets most the media attention since it's a large organization, but all of these individuals who founded their Orgs and also the volunteers and even paid staff are all amazing human beings. I try to volunteer with a few beach cleanups annually and a lot of our offroad groups will spend weekends cleaning up the desert OHV areas that we frequent to prevent them from closing down due to negligence and dumping. Unfortunately the GOVERNMENTS of many countries just don't do anywhere near enough (especially over in India, Guatemala, and other areas) which is the bigger problem. I wish all the success you can achieve with all these organizations who are trying their best to do what the politicians won't do
I have never understood why the funding of an environmentally sound disposal of plastic has not been made the requirement of the plastic manufacturers. Currently they have no responsibility for this in most countries and therefore dont have to factor the cost into their product. If they did many products would become uneconomic and alternatives such as paper based would be used.
Super opportunity for American companies to come to the recuse and what do they do? Not a dam thing. I pray we wake up and lead the fight not just in freedom but also freedom from pollution. Just think how much countries would pay to get their rivers and mountains clean again.

(yes, this ultimately means people pay more but you'll get more done by incentivizing companies which want to bring down costs just as much as consumers do and have much more control than consumers in deciding which materials are used.) i.e. EPR

Biodegradable is a bit of a controversial solution. The thing about plastics are that the vast majority of them are never recycled and instead enter landfills if not the environment. This means that any bio plastics that enter landfills will not break down or become methane instead. Some biodegradable plastics will also break down into micro plastics..
Please make a video about the company ALPLA in Austria. They are one of the world’s biggest plastic packaging producers. Have companies around the globe. They work with massive brands and greenwash their own products by saying that there items are possible to recycle and move the full responsibility to the consumers.

I certainly see a lot of people and places using less plastic bags and things like cardboard used as packaging but think of almost literally any other thing and there's probably plastic around it, something from the supermarket in a container, candy bags, coffee cups, plastics bottles is a big one, and of course ordering things online. Efficiency and convenience we've gotten accustomed to and throw a hissy fit if we don't have wasn't developed with sustainability in mind

It just seems so easy here in The Great Lakes region because we have no excuses like so many of these stories around the world describe no formal systems of refuse collection. That is NOT the issue here in the United States or Canada surrounding The Great Lakes. What's worse, so many millions of people can only dream of having abundant fresh, drinkable water sources as we have here in The Great Lakes region so it seems even worse to think our affluence allows so much plastic litter to collect and pollute our single greatest resource. The best way to help a country solve their pollution problem is to help their economy prosper. As the standard of living improves, environmental conditions start becoming a higher priority for the govt and it’s citizens.
A great mass solution is a total transition to biodegradable packaging materials, but they require more plant components, which will stimulate a significant increase in the cultivation of crops such as corn, rice, which consume a lot of water, so we need to really diversify approaches in creating packaging materials, perhaps from mushrooms or algae
These are all still very small scale solutions. I kinda chuckle everytime I hear that we need communities to start putting the work. How about we shift the responsability on the real culprits, which are the packaging industry. Coca Cola has bought the rights to so many rivers in the developing world and instead of people having direct access to clean water they now have to buy bottled water from Coca Cola. In my opinion the Coca Cola foundation should do a hell of a lot more when sponsoring these cleanup projects. They could easily donate 100 of these Interceptors world wide
Absolutely! These multi-billion dollar companies have shifted the blame and responsibility onto us and don't do anything about reducing waste because it's not profitable. They won't start doing anything until governments around the world start pressuring them to take action and that's why these companies need to be heavily taxed.

Every time I hear things like "behavior change and education" I want to scream. Consumers are not the problem. People can only do so much when it's the industry and manufacturers that are addicted to cheap, excessive plastic packaging. Everyone knows plastic is bad, but the habits of any one person will have no noticable effect so long as thousands of tons of new plastic are produced every day. You want to clean up the plastic at the source? Tax and regulate the hell out of plastic producers and any company that uses plastic packaging, using the money gained toward plastic reduction and elimination-not recycling. As a civilization we have proved we are not advanced enough for something as destructive as plastic without a way to get rid of it.

This is why more wood products are important. Napkins, paper bags, carboard cups, and other paper products can naturally breakdown in the environment. Instead of plastic bottles and plastic bags staying there for years. Also, just send a big incinerator boat out into the ocean and burn all the trash. Easier than shipping it back to mainland.
Scripps actually went out into the Pacific Ocean, looking for plastic shopping bags in the ocean. Not only did they not find any bags, they found that the plastic was from China, not the US.
I lived In hong Kong for years as a spoiled expat traveling spouse.. The joke was and is look into the harbor to learn to read its all in there..Hotels would dump turds into the harbor at a schedule turned it brown friend lived with that view..Fines for dumping were a couple hundred bucks peanuts =so harbor became a dump..Ever sail sydney harbour i did for over 8 hours on the bean counter(thanks andrew) I was shocked no garbage was in the harbor.. In the new territories american style homes had open sewers half moon with goodies floating on by.. Right next to sidewalk.. That was weird..
I just can’t believe how much plastic we use…what a shame. Just simply stopping the use water bottles and other easily replaced products will make a huge difference! Also nobody should be eating bags of chips to begin with, so let’s just stop doing that too
Why are the governments of the countries especially where the river plastic pollution is at peaks and effecting human wealth in innumerable ways to buy this product for cleaning their rivers? I am from India and I hope our government officials watched this video's and order this machine from Baltimore and installed in every polluted rivers of India for clearing the plastic waste. The inventor of this machine has done a big favour on the modern society on how to discard waste in an effective way through this invention. I hope he is recognised and rewarded by his government for his big contribution on how to tackle the most relevant plastic waste management in the modern world.

We need to tax single use plastic, so that its use is disincentivized. A large percentage of the waste we saw on the video comes from only a few companies who just don’t seem very interested in doing anything about it.

Single use plastic is banned in the entire EU. The rest of the world needs to follow. Also I can't believe major countries haven't got an actual recycling system for bottles and cans. Here we pay for the bottle whether it be plastic or glas or cans and when we return it again in the store we get our money back on the items ranging from $0.14 to $0.41. This means people want to recycle their bottles and cans and that other people want to pick up one of these on the street to return it

Having said that the channel currently has less than 500k subscribers which is incredibly disappointing. Thank all of these companies for what they do! I wonder if keeping the rivers and oceans cleaner on such a large scale across the world is having an effect on global warming? All of this garbage no longer floating on the tops of rivers, where usually it would cause shading for the water just below it, in turn keeping it cooler.

wow the guatamala river clip was just astonishing. Maybe for their trap gate system they can install few more before it that captures larger trash first then filters out the smaller ones down the line so one gate doesnt have to hold the entire trash build up.

I used to work for a shipping company, and shipping companies just dumps trash in the ocean when they are far enough out, because they are allowed to do that. They have incinirators on the ship, but its cheaper and faster to just dump it..

When I was young, your milk and soda was delivered to our house each morning in glass containers.
So each night we would place the empties on the front steps and each morning we would bring in the refilled containers.
The milk and soda companies would sterilize the containers and reuse them daily.
Didn't use plastic so there was never an pollution issue. Some of the old ways are best ways.
That's not the source though. The source is the oil companies heavily pushing plastics, most of which are not even recyclable due to the cost vs buying new.

This is inspiring to see the invocation on fixing a global problem.
The way I see it being fixed is time and awareness of the problem: When a newborn baby enters the world, they absorb information about how their parents and other family and community members handle trash and recyclable items. They therefore have this imprinted on their memory, and whatever trash handling methods their surroundings are using is going to be carried on with them for the rest of their lives. It is therefore imperative that from a very young age, that children learn, sooner rather than later, how trash and recyclables should be handled. If they can be made aware of the fact that that it should go in the proper bin, then that will help matters greatly.
The other part of the equation is to reduce the number and type of recyclable items. This is going to take about as long as it takes a baby to adulthood, possibly longer. Industry awareness of what environmental impact their plastics have on the environment, and handling procedures implemented by government agencies on all levels will help ensure that industries are going to have places for their waste stream to go to, instead of ending up in a waterway, ocean, or landfill. It takes longer for industry to change, because it is dependent on what trash and recyclable handling procedures the people running those industries have been imprinted from birth with.
It will take a while for them to get around to fixing the problem, could be 20 or 30 years, possibly more. But eventually it will be solved, and in due time waste will no longer be a problem. Individuals have to do their part for this to happen. Automated sorting systems can only sort waste and recyclables if they get fed them. Transportation and sorting technologies will have to keep up with the demand for sorting and processing of both waste and recycling streams.
I'm very happy to see great people work to help the planet.

I’m glad there are companies and individuals that care for our planet, yet we all need to know how to change our habits.
The Ocean CleanUp obviously gets most the media attention since it's a large organization, but all of these individuals who founded their Orgs and also the volunteers and even paid staff are all amazing human beings.
I try to volunteer with a few beach cleanups annually and a lot of our offroad groups will spend weekends cleaning up the desert OHV areas that we frequent to prevent them from closing down due to negligence and dumping. Unfortunately the GOVERNMENTS of many countries just don't do anywhere near enough (especially over in India, Guatemala, and other areas) which is the bigger problem.
I wish all the success you can achieve with all these organizations who are trying their best to do what the politicians won't do
I have never understood why the funding of an environmentally sound disposal of plastic has not been made the requirement of the plastic manufacturers. Currently they have no responsibility for this in most countries and therefore dont have to factor the cost into their product. If they did many products would become uneconomic and alternatives such as paper based would be used.

don't incentivize gov'ts or people. it's too hard. incentivize companies by making them pay for the cleanup costs. (yes, this ultimately means people pay more but you'll get more done by incentivizing companies which want to bring down costs just as much as consumers do and have much more control than consumers in deciding which materials are used.) i.e. EPR

Biodegradable is a bit of a controversial solution. The thing about plastics are that the vast majority of them are never recycled and instead enter landfills if not the environment. This means that any bio plastics that enter landfills will not break down or become methane instead. Some biodegradable plastics will also break down into micro plastics..

They work with massive brands and greenwash their own products by saying that there items are possible to recycle and move the full responsibility to the consumers.

I certainly see a lot of people and places using less plastic bags and things like cardboard used as packaging but think of almost literally any other thing and there's probably plastic around it, something from the supermarket in a container, candy bags, coffee cups, plastics bottles is a big one, and of course ordering things online. The best way to help a country solve their pollution problem is to help their economy prosper. As the standard of living improves, environmental conditions start becoming a higher priority for the govt and it’s citizens.

These are all still very small scale solutions. I kinda chuckle everytime I hear that we need communities to start putting the work. How about we shift the responsability on the real culprits, which are the packaging industry. Coca Cola has bought the rights to so many rivers in the developing world and instead of people having direct access to clean water they now have to buy bottled water from Coca Cola. In my opinion the Coca Cola foundation should do a hell of a lot more when sponsoring these cleanup projects. They could easily donate 100 of these Interceptors world wide
Absolutely! These multi-billion dollar companies have shifted the blame and responsibility onto us and don't do anything about reducing waste because it's not profitable. They won't start doing anything until governments around the world start pressuring them to take action and that's why these companies need to be heavily taxed.

Diversity is our strength
Every time I hear things like "behavior change and education" I want to scream. Consumers are not the problem. People can only do so much when it's the industry and manufacturers that are addicted to cheap, excessive plastic packaging. Everyone knows plastic is bad, but the habits of any one person will have no noticable effect so long as thousands of tons of new plastic are produced every day. You want to clean up the plastic at the source? Tax and regulate the hell out of plastic producers and any company that uses plastic packaging, using the money gained toward plastic reduction and elimination-not recycling. As a civilization we have proved we are not advanced enough for something as destructive as plastic without a way to get rid of it.

This is why more wood products are important. Napkins, paper bags, carboard cups, and other paper products can naturally breakdown in the environment. Instead of plastic bottles and plastic bags staying there for years. Also, just send a big incinerator boat out into the ocean and burn all the trash. Easier than shipping it back to mainland.

I lived In hong Kong for years as a spoiled expat traveling spouse.. The joke was and is look into the harbor to learn to read its all in there..Hotels would dump turds into the harbor at a schedule turned it brown friend lived with that view..Fines for dumping were a couple hundred bucks peanuts =so harbor became a dump..Ever sail sydney harbour i did for over 8 hours on the bean counter(thanks andrew) I was shocked no garbage was in the harbor.. In the new territories american style homes had open sewers half moon with goodies floating on by.. Right next to sidewalk.. That was weird..

Why are the governments of the countries especially where the river plastic pollution is at peaks and effecting human wealth in innumerable ways to buy this product for cleaning their rivers?
I am from India and I hope our government officials watched this video's and order this machine from Baltimore and installed in every polluted rivers of India for clearing the plastic waste.
The inventor of this machine has done a big favour on the modern society on how to discard waste in an effective way through this invention.
I hope he is recognised and rewarded by his government for his big contribution on how to tackle the most relevant plastic waste management in the modern world.
I think part of the issue is lack of waste collection at street level. I removed growing we had now trash collection in India where I am from.
