No we should leave it up to the people of Greenland. From what I hear, they don't want to be part of either USA or Denmark, so we should make a deal where we back their sovereignty in exchange for deeper economic and military ties. Self-determination, like you guys said.
You have allowed China to establish a presence in Greenland, yet now you feign alarm and indignation. Please spare us the performative outrage-Greenland has never truly 'belonged' to you. The people of Greenland have their own distinct identity and aspirations, and many of them do not even wish to be considered Danes. It’s high time to acknowledge their right to self-determination rather than clinging to colonial-era notions of ownership and control. TRUMP 2024 MAke Greenland American lol
Can you guarantee that they will always stay our ally and with chinas rise that won’t let part of it operated by china in future? Imagine Trump never mentioned Greenland … can you guarantee that ?
Or you have china buying there way in, when they already control 60% of rare earth metal production why give them complete control??? They take Taiwan and the world is screwed from a semiconductor standpoint. China is the biggest threat to the world right now
China has zero control over Uranium or other minerals in Greenland , there was an issue with an Australian company where the US claims a Chinese company owned a part of the company, that company does not operate in Greenland anymore and Greenland have banned Uranium mining will the USA pay the debt of 10 billion dollars Greenland is now faced with for closing down this company ????, it is USA who demands Greenland can't do any business with China so I guess they will pay the bill

Well, sooner or later Greenland or Denmark needs to make a decision. Russia hasn't really been quiet on their crusade to restore the Soviet Union. Having US military base in Greenland makes it so that the US can respond quickly if Russia do plan to go all out against NATO. You know how much Putin hates that union. There's also a posibility for the US to leave NATO, Trump has been hinting it.
Canada has 45m people I agree independent neutered Davos, WEF, WHO, Paris Climate Accord country of taxed slaves. Greenland and Panama, just the Canal the 51 mile stretch of waterways between the 2 Oceans is totally for acquiring or invading and if The US or The UK or The 27 EU Europeans states do not secure it and or purchase it, maybe even invade it, Russia and China are gonna play for keeps within a decade or two and most definitely by 2050.
honestly not even a bad outcome. I just don't get why we don't work together as a northern superpower in the arctic. Europe is completely dependent on their enemies in Russia and China. Why not join the USA? Because the telly tells you Trump is bad?
Greenland has been a part of Denmark from before the United States even existed. To think the US has any legitimate claim to it is idiotic. Just because it is closed to the US than Denmark doesn't make it US property because under the same logic, it should belong to Canada. But then again, agent orange also wants to make Canada a state ... And while some people in Greenland want independence from Denmark, that also really means independence, not trade in one ruler for another. And as a European, I hate to point this out, but most of us would not want to be part of the US given the fact that the American Dream no longer exists and while the US is wealthy, it also has some of the biggest inequalities in the world while failing to provide basic needs to people who actually need it.
sounds outrageous for a small country to hold on to it's former conquered territory, despite world security. And it is so great for Greenlandic natives, they have the world's highest rate of self deletion and alcoholism
Netherlands regularly does not meet their NATO military spending percentage. Only this last year you have. It is a joke the Dutch will utilize their military. @@kw2443 I know it's a dig measuring contest right now, but there's more to global hegemony than mere military force. It's pretty absurd to think that Trump ever considered buying Greenland. As someone from Denmark, I find it interesting that we are actively supporting Ukraine in its right to independence and democracy, yet at the same time, Trump are trying to muscle Denmark and Greenland into allowing the U.S. to take control of Greenland. This presents a clear contradiction. While I don't believe this is the primary reason for NATO's involvement in Ukraine (which I see more as a provocation towards Russia, particularly from the U.S.), the core question remains: How can we claim to protect democracy and support the free world if we entertain the idea of territorial expansion in the way Trump suggested? If the true reason for helping Ukraine is to protect freedom and democracy, then how do we reconcile that with such a move on Greenland? It feels like hypocrisy to even suggest it. We'll see how this unfolds in the future, but this inconsistency stands out to me.
@@petergriebel7321 It isn’t purely about territorial expansion if that’s even the case at all. I don’t know if you’ve been in a coma for the last 4 years under sleepy jb, but countries like china and Russia have been on the move. Quit generalizing as if the two things are similar, one if for national security, the other is one laying claim because they think it’s part of their rightful territory.

Supposedly all Greenland needs to do in order to be independent from Denmark is to hold a clear referendum. If they do that and then want to ally with or even join the USA, is Denmark going to stand in the way? After all, Greenland would give the US strategic options which don’t involve Europe, and they would be able to develop Greenland’s vast oil fields, which would compete with Denmark’s North Sea operations.
You'd be saying that in every era though. You wouldn't like the expansion west, you wouldn't like buying Louisiana and Alaska, you wouldn't like the annexation of Texas. Do you even like that Europeans went to America in the first place?
Because we need to defend the USA 2:40 and Greenland from Russia and China. Why wouldn't Denmark be thrilled to sell Greenland for world security and profit. And to help the suffering people with the world's highest rate of self deletion
The US should focus on funding the infrastructure of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Island instead of Greenland. The US is just exercising its colonial power.
Puerto Rico is a money pit. I think we should give them their independence, whether they want it or not. The US just keeps the small island of Vieques for national defense purposes.
I am not sure why so many Americans, the president included, fail to see that Greenland is a huge place, and with this sparse population, there is plenty PLENTY of room for military bases? Why is it so important to take more land from even more natives, who in this case are not recognised by the international community but also have protected rights. The reason why Greenland is cautious about mineral extraction comes down to the fact that American environmental protection is literally catastrophically bad and that few in Greenland want to live in a lethally toxic place, that is crucial to the health of Earth's entire biosphere, to life on Earth itself. We do NOT want to be rules by your cruel maganists and see our civil rights taken away. How can that be hard to understand? America took Guam, not the entire South East Asian archipelago. America has become mad and cruel, and that is not something people who aren't part of this delusional frenzy want to be a part of!
Trump is mad and cruel not America he only speaks for himself and oligarchs the American people did not ask for this. Nobody wanted Greenland except for Trump and his rich elitist selfish buddies.
Its because of resources. You clowns who think USA are good guys crack me up. They destroyed Afghanistan Iraq and toppled govts all over the world for resources
To Manifest Destiny is a huge part of the American psych. We learn about it in school, usually just as from the Atlantic from the Pacific, but I've always thought we shouldn't stop there. All of the Americas will be United eventually. I personally think it would be really cool to see some progress on that within my lifetime.
IMAGINE HOW STRONG OUR COUNTRY WOULD BE IF PRESIDENTS SPENT THEIR DAYS WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED THEM INSTEAD OF THE BILLIONAIRES WHO BUY THEM.
If US security is the problem, Denmark has worked with us to construct several US military bases in Greenland with a variety of functions, some secret. ANY military presence of the US in Greenland has been supported by Denmark/Greenland. Trump is going through this charade because he desires Greenland's resources, primarily rare earths essential to the production of computer chips.
Tonight the Danish PM is having a dinner together with her colleges from Sweden, Norway and Finland. The topic is of course Greenland. Meanwhile the former Swedish PM, Carl Bildt, tells Denmark and the EU to be ready for a serious conflict against Trump and the USA. It's sad, what's happening.
I think they are being a bit dramatic. They should know how Trump is by now. He comes on strong and asks for the whole island for free. Good cop/bad cop. In the end, he asks for a new base and some mineral rights. Denmark thinks it is the best case for them and he will consider it a win and move on.
Canadian here… I like the idea of the US having 2 major military bases there. One airbase in the North and one Naval base in the South. Each would be massive.
@@benliu6420 hopefully, you sell your skills and not yourself. I shan't, of course, make any assumptions regarding your chosen line of occupation, nor pass any judgement. Such arrangements do not have much appeal to us. But do feel free to continue to do with yourself as you please.
May I also remind you of the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. As far as I understand Denmark wants to exploit the resources on Greenland, but Greenland doesn't want to do it. So I don't understand why USA thinks they would want to let Americans exploit the resources

As a Dane, I am deeply disappointed by President Trump’s lack of respect for longstanding allies, exemplified by his threats to abandon NATO and the silence of other voices in the U.S. These remarks, particularly about NATO members who don’t meet the 2% defense spending target, dismiss Denmark’s significant contributions and sacrifices. Denmark has stood by the U.S. in decades of wars, including Afghanistan and Iraq, suffering 43 fatalities in Afghanistan alone-one of the highest per capita casualty rates among NATO allies. Trump’s idea of NATO allies being “in debt” reduces these sacrifices to mere financial transactions. As the saying goes, “Some expenses are paid with cash; some are paid with blood.” Let me remind you that the only time NATO’s Article 5 has been invoked was after 9/11, when the U.S. called on its allies for support. Denmark, like many others, responded without hesitation. If any NATO member is “in debt,” it is the U.S. Denmark has more than paid its share. If Denmark hadn’t borne these losses in Afghanistan, who does Trump think would have taken those casualties instead? If the U.S. continues treating its allies this way, it risks eroding NATO. The result will be more young Americans dying in future wars, as allies grow less willing to shoulder the costs of U.S.-led conflicts. Danish and European leaders will find it increasingly difficult to justify sending their soldiers to fight and die for a country that shows little gratitude in return. For those who question the importance of U.S. alliances, I recommend watching Perun’s video, "US Grand Strategy: NATO, Alliances, & Ukraine", which explains how alliances are essential to U.S. global strategy. Trump has further strained relations by threatening military force over Greenland, a Danish territory. Such actions undermine the trust that forms the foundation of NATO and alienate loyal allies like Denmark. If Trump’s goal is to push the EU toward greater strategic independence from the U.S., he is succeeding. Alienating allies will only encourage Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities, reducing reliance on American-made military equipment. Ultimately, the U.S. must ask itself: does it want allies who stand by its side in times of crisis, sharing the costs of war, or will it alienate them with self-serving rhetoric? Denmark has paid its dues-in both cash and blood-and deserves far more respect from the country it has so faithfully supported.
I get all that..but what about china?? They have 2 operations there .soon to be however msny..if they gain complete control of rare earth metals. The world is screwed just like the situation in Taiwan.
We can't trust EU to make good decisions regarding Russia. Look at the oil debacle that helped fund war. That costs American taxpayers hundreds of billions of USD
The Pittufik Air Base is operated under the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement which governs the U.S. military presence in Greenland. It explicitly acknowledges Denmark retains sovereignty over Greenland and the base, for which the USA pays rent. In unlikely event that the U.S. was requested to vacate Pittufik, the U.S. would likely have to comply under international law and the terms of the Agreement. To do otherwise would be an egregious breach of international law. This is little different from the 1951 US-Japan Agreement for its Okinawa bases (rented), the 1903 US lease of Guantanamo (Cuban sovereignty) or 1966 lease of US base on Diego Garcia in Indian Ocean (British). Generally US presence in Greenland has NOT been kind. For example : in 1894 US Admiral Peary removed a large meteorite from Cape York (PIttufik) which provided the northern Inuit peoples with their only source of tool metal. Some Inuit inhabitants were also seized and taken to the U.S. for anthropological and ethnographic purposes and to be exhibited at the 1893 Chicago Worlds fair. After 1951 and establishment of the Pittufik(Thule) base, the US - contrary to Danish law - secretly stationed nuclear weapons under the ice; a discovery only made in 1968 when a B-52 crashed in Greenland scattering 4 radioactive weapons there. Three of the four bombs were successfully recovered, and the widespread radioactive contamination largely removed, but the fourth bomb remains and has never been found. The US military's relationship with indigenous groups (here Inuit) has - no suprise - lead to disputes more recently.
Rare earth metals are not rare. They’re difficult to separate from each other. Often, there are radioactive elements contained in the minerals (e.g. Thorium) which makes refining expensive.
Greenland cant call itself autonomous much more an independent country when it heavily relies on Denmark for money. It is a territory of the Danish kingdom, period!
Those $500 million per year are not a lot of money though, if the minerals are worth trillions. So my fear is that someone with money will make those 50,000 people in Greenland an offer they can't refuse. Technically it is not enough though if a majority of people in Greenland would agree. A majority of people in Denmark is needed. That is the same problem as with Spain and Catalonia. It is not enough that a majority of Catalunyas want to leave Spain. The rest of the country would have to agree. As Europeans we should defend Greenland even if that means World War III.
@@jakobraahauge7299 Britain having the island is better for the US than Denmark. Just because someone is your friend doesn't mean you let them walk over you. America's allies had to be pressured to meet shared defense goals and still heavily tariff America's goods.
As a Dane working for the Danish newspaper Information, with family living in Greenland. For me it seems we now may have an explanation for why Trump has never directly criticized Vladimir Putin's Russia for encroaching on Ukraine's sovereignty. He himself does not respect the territorial integrity of other countries. During his 2017-21 administration, Trump has not raised the issue of increased military cooperation and a greater US military presence in Greenland with Denmark. The unwillingness to invest in the defense of Greenland in cooperation with Denmark suggests that Trump and his political advisors seem to have other plans for Greenland. National security just seems like a pretext to incorporate the world's largest island into the US. Another popular reason stated is that Donald Trump's interest in Greenland is about taking on China in the race for critical raw materials, of which Greenland's underground holds massive amounts. But the US - and other countries for that matter - have had ample opportunity to explore and establish mines in Greenland for years. Yet only one US-owned license has been issued right now, while there are 23 Canadian and 23 British, according to Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland's Minister of Finance, Equality, Mineral Resources and Justice. If Trump, Elon Musk and the future ambassador, tech billionaire Ken Howery, have their eyes fixed on Greenland's underground, they should play with their cards face up. Then Denmark, Greenland and the rest of the world would be clear that the US intends to pursue an imperialistic policy for the next four years. From the beginning of the republic, the Americans' self-understanding has been that the US would never become a colonial power like the European powers that established colonies to plunder their natural resources. This is apparently a narrative Trump is now ready to scrap once and for all.
Yet Telecom company has a monopoly over Greenlands communication infrastructure that's neither helpful or cheap. Didn't denmark allow the Nord pipeline through is waters ?
This isn't a shocker. Average american thinks it should take over any country and land it chooses. This isn't a trump issue this is a american mentality issue. They don't care about the land, the people, the culture etc. They care about the resources and how much they can make. American greed has been and will be their downfall. They criticize Putin but have done worse things in the middle east, Asia and south America. LOL they support an apartheid and genocide with Israel, this should all you need to know about the US.
Beautifully laid out. It's clear that the knowledge about Greenland and it's situation is not only absent in Trump's hemisphere, it is also absent in American media as a whole.
If Trump invades and occupies Greenland then yes. But if he backs the island's sovereignty in exchange for economic/military favors, then no. I'm almost certain Trump will choose the latter, he is a dealmaker not an emperor.
I hear all that. Where is he going to get the money for all that, Americans were crying that Uncle Sam was spending money on foreign wars, but not buying a whole new island isn't wasting taxpayers.
The United States has already spent over $12 trillion on conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention the $100+ billion we allocate annually for foreign aid. Clearly, we have the financial means to purchase Greenland if that were the goal. However, the real question isn’t whether we can buy Greenland but why don't we just invade Greenland?
@MrKirua21 The US government is 36 trillion dollars in debt, and that number is growing at an unsustainable rate. This means that if the US does keep spending money, like there's no tomorrow, the standard of living for the average American is going to go through the floor and that's going to a major economic crisis for the US and the world to certain extent and printing money is just going to make it worst. So, no, the US doesn't have unlimited money reserve to buy Greenland like that the are economic storm clouds coming. Also, an invasion of Greenland would be a serious act of war that will cost the US way more than Greenland is worth.
@@MrKirua21 "why don't we just invade Greenland?" Because it would demolish your alliance with all the European countries - including two powers with nuclear weapons?
I’m Canadian and feel the same way. Unfortunately, Trumps behaviour dishonors friends and allies. However, there is no ‘ For Sale’ sign on Greenland. Or Canada. Denmark, Greenland does not, will not, stand alone.
Let’s just say if America dared to cross a redline and use military force to forcefully take over Greenland against the will of the Greenlanders and without Denmark also agreeing to it it will be seen as an act of force against a NATO country by another NATO country. European relations with America will come to an end and distrust will grow and as a result will force europe to rearm itself and become a military superpower with its own foreign policy.
The EU rearming itself is a pipe dream unless its electorate somehow decides to give up the current level of social benefits, which everyone knows is not going to happen.
My concern is that average people in Greenland will see dollars and will be to eager to sell it if the price is right... So much that Russia did with Alaska back in the day. It will be a huge mistake and maybe Greenland needs to learn from Russia, as they regretted it ever since. Also thinking about minerals in Greenland, with initiatives like "Drill baby, drill", soon you be able to excavate miners there with just a regular equipment as there is no sight of slowing down in global warming... so Greenlanders might as well wait a bit and then get all the riches to themselves. Finally, if the US choose a military takeover it will be safe to say that Russia was ALSO just defending their strategic situation in Ukraine... so even though we all know that it is a world of double standards and different rules for ones and others, but I really want to believe in Unity of NATO and EU to never allow this to happen!
I hope the Greenlanders stand firm, even if the US offer $10 million or more to every Greenlander. Only very desperate people want to become citizens of the United States.
It angers me so much, that this is even a topic. If russia or iran said something similar, I bet we'd be calling them fascist. How is this even a Topic? buying a country? or is it annexing it? Greenland deserve to afford more civility and dignity than this.
Don't we already have Thule AFB in Greenland? Or whatever it is called now. Just use that or expand it. We don't need to buy Greenland. They are already a drag on the Danish economy, we probably don't need that right now. Greenlanders want to be independent but they currently get half their funding from Denmark - so good luck with that.
Greenlanders have the right to govern themselves for a long time and they already told the US to f off and quit stalking them. They don't want complete autonomy because Denmark gives them anything they need, including a living and social welfare benefits, which third world America can't even give themselves. Also that base is there by permission of Greenlanders. They can cancel that base any time they please.
No. The usa cannot accept the financial obligations that come with it. - Paying each citizen $12.000 a year. - Free healthcare to all citizen. - Free education to all citizen. Then there of course is the price... Greenland does not wish to be part of the USA. However Greenland is open for deals with mining as other countries already are doing. The US can put all the military equipment on Greenland as the 60 years old agreement allows them to do...
You really want to let them in? I mean it was okay, when they didnt claimed Greenland, but since they did, letting them to build a dozen bases, is letting them to plant the US flag on the island.

There's also a posibility for the US to leave NATO, Trump has been hinting it.

Supposedly all Greenland needs to do in order to be independent from Denmark is to hold a clear referendum. If they do that and then want to ally with or even join the USA, is Denmark going to stand in the way? I am not sure why so many Americans, the president included, fail to see that Greenland is a huge place, and with this sparse population, there is plenty PLENTY of room for military bases? Why is it so important to take more land from even more natives, who in this case are not recognised by the international community but also have protected rights.
The reason why Greenland is cautious about mineral extraction comes down to the fact that American environmental protection is literally catastrophically bad and that few in Greenland want to live in a lethally toxic place, that is crucial to the health of Earth's entire biosphere, to life on Earth itself.

Well let’s be honest. We technically protect it. So technically it’s ours. Same goes for Canada
As the saying goes, “Some expenses are paid with cash; some are paid with blood.”
Let me remind you that the only time NATO’s Article 5 has been invoked was after 9/11, when the U.S. called on its allies for support.
It is impossible for anybody to be more disappointed in Trump
I get all that..but what about china?? They have 2 operations there .soon to be however msny..if they gain complete control of rare earth metals. The world is screwed just like the situation in Taiwan.

Thank you for sharing this piece of history!! Very insightful. Especially how the US treated native Greenlanders in the past…
Rare earth metals are not rare. They’re difficult to separate from each other. Often, there are radioactive elements contained in the minerals (e.g. Thorium) which makes refining expensive.
Buy? No.
Rob? Likely.
Greenland cant call itself autonomous much more an independent country when it heavily relies on Denmark for money. It is a territory of the Danish kingdom, period!
Sounds like they are holding them hostage. Sounds evil.

We're buying greeland for it's natural resources it's an investment
I agree buying Greenland is a investment in the future of Western Civilization.
@MrKirua21
The US government is 36 trillion dollars in debt, and that number is growing at an unsustainable rate.
@@MrKirua21 "why don't we just invade Greenland?"
Because it would demolish your alliance with all the European countries - including two powers with nuclear weapons?
I’m Canadian and feel the same way. Unfortunately, Trumps behaviour dishonors friends and allies. However, there is no ‘ For Sale’ sign on Greenland. Or Canada. Denmark, Greenland does not, will not, stand alone.
People of Greenland, you’ll end up in some reservation in the middle of nowhere just like what they did to Native Americans
They are already on a reservation in the middle of nowhere.
Europe will never be a superpower again.
Like maga cares. This is MAGAFest Destiny at work.

no, this will be a full scale arming of Greenland, we cannot allow the status quo to continue on
My concern is that average people in Greenland will see dollars and will be to eager to sell it if the price is right...
You cant buy what's not being sold...
I have bought lots of things that weren't being sold. You just make an offer and dicker from there.
His pea brain thinks he needs Greenland which he doesn't.
USA needs Greenland, and so does Europe (NATO) needs USA to have it. The only problem here is that Trump is trying to get it.
Trump wants to annex Canada too, so it would not only be over Greenland.

Trump doesn't do civility and dignity. Or indeed humanity. He 's great at idiocy, though.
It's not about security, it's about stealing resources so Trump's billionnaire buddies can get even richer exploiting them.
So they want the minerals for war. Disgusting. Leave the island alone

Well the USA did save Greenland during WW2 after Denmark fled
Trump said peasants’ opinions don’t matter

Your demonstrating a failure to grasp how things are done. Trump intends to reduce the cost of growing crops, and the effects of that will take until October or November 2025 or even 2026 to be felt.
You see, first you must have at least one (or two) seasons of planting crops, growing, and harvesting then distributing the food, to see the general effect. I know this is complicated and difficult for you to grasp, but work on it. I hope this helps your understanding of the process.
^^^ You're skipping transportation and processing costs of groceries. What you explained may reduce costs, that's a big maybe, if we all bought groceries from farmers markets. But we don't, we buy from big corporations, and transport food across states, countries, even continents. Also while you're in the mood to share your wisdom, explain how Trump's tariffs could reduce prices, or mass deportation of low wage immigrant workers could help reduce prices. And also how tax cuts, which would further increase demand for goods, could drive down prices.

Not at all. People who say this don't want to think through things and just relying on some talking head they saw. Global warming is real and its melting the arctic. In the last decade China and Russia have been working out trade routes and increasing military presence in the arctic for future partnerships. We've fallen behind during this time. Additionally, its loaded with precious metals and natural resources that are going to be necessary for the next stage of industry - AI and EV. Finally, it expands the US military presence into the North Atlantic which is critical to the strengthening partnership b/w Russia and China....

Yes, it’s definitely possible for Trump to buy Greenland. How do I know? Because I once bought Greenland from my son during a game of Risk. Of course, the rules of Risk don’t allow for this, so I told my son it was my manifest destiny. I gave him 50 cents for it and grabbed the Greenland card from hi. Why, he cried, Why?! Cause I need it to protect North America, and it presents a unique opportunity for me, I said. He cried, but I’m bigger than him and there was nothing he could do. Trump, it seems, knows how to play Risk just like I do!
Considering the native Greenlanders had been treated very poorly by Western powers in their history, and even now is treated only as a "property" and can be grabbed away by whoever powerful! Basically, Greenland is now under the control of EU and US, why do you want to humiliate them more by such talking? Frankly, if I were Greenland and felt that I wasn't treated with enough respect, then I may just declare independence first (with the support and encouragement from big powers like US with the promise that we will be "truly independent" and can make decision for ourselves),...then might join China quickly afterward. It would be a shock, but what can you do then?!
