Stopping Ocean Plastic Pollution at its Source | WILD HOPE

  • Inventor Boyan Slat is on a mission to rid oceans of plastic. His team at The Ocean Cleanup designs and deploys systems that pull trash from the open ocean. Now, he’s stopping the pollution at its source: rivers where plastic is easier to catch, like those in Kingston Harbor, Jamaica.
    Each year an estimated four million tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans, killing thousands of marine creatures and accumulating up the food chain. The plastic gathers in five massive ocean gyres, the largest of which, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, holds 87,000 tons of trash. After years of research, The Ocean Cleanup has created a system that removes 7000 kilograms of trash from the sea every day and a half; the team aims to remove 90% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2040.
    But plastics keep flowing into the ocean, largely from the world’s polluted rivers. In Jamaica, Boyan’s team has teamed up with Alecia Beaufort and a local group cleaning up their waterways. Together, they’ve deployed a new system to trap plastic at the source as it flows downriver during a storm. Their success has inspired others to join the effort, creating a virtuous cycle of citizen action.

    The first system was tested near San Francisco, CA. I remember reading a local paper in which some "Supposed Expert Professor" was dismissing the effort. However, the person had no solution for cleaning the oceans. They just kept insisting on dealing with land-based trash. I think we can all agree that this problem requires an all-hands-on deck approach. Keep up the good work!

    • @huldu
      @huldu Месяц назад +1

      It's not an easy solvable problem and just DOING something for the sake of doing it can cause far more harm, that's the problem. To truly get rid of plastics you have to get people to stop using it and good luck with that, but no matter what the changes have to take place from the top, ie government, companies that produce and use it. What's your idea in how to replace plastics and still make it as affordable? Like I said what's the point dealing with trash when you can go straight for the source of it. For every piece of trash you remove you can bet there's a lot more out there coming in. The human population across the world is booming so yes, it's a problem that will get worse and worse with time. Come up with a replacement for disposable plastics and get companies to use that instead.

To have an idea, then to go out and execute are two very different things, and one is even harder then the other. The work, the stress and perseverence to do it till you achieve your goal. Hats off to you! can't wait to see where we are at 2040.

Traveling around the world you begin to notice that it is not that common to have garbage collection, let alone recycling. And recycling isn't effective or efficient. They need to think about stopping the source, as well.

    • @Trixtah
      @Trixtah Месяц назад

      They do think about the source and they actively lobby national and regional governments about the issue. But one of their aims about doing these cleanups - other than the obvious, at least getting rid of a large percentage of it - is to make the issue *visible* and to give people *hope* that it can be fixed. A lot of this pollution happens because corporations in rich countries would rather get people buying water in plastic bottles than pay taxes where they do business in poor countries so that the govts there can provide clean water. Places are too poor to provide proper waste disposal services, so people chuck it in the nearest waterway or in a landfill that gets washed into a river when it rains. All these things need to be tackled, but if people see the river can be cleaned, maybe they will chuck in less rubbish, demand clean tap water, elect govts that can make changes, etc etc.

    Wonderful video! The governments have to get on board by banning unnecessary plastic containers and packaging and forcing BY LAW companies to stop making things, or putting things, or wrapping things in plastic. Too bad for the oil companies, too bad for corporations who specialize in making every thing from plastic, too bad for corporations who insist on planned obsolescence and/or short lifespan products. And people need to be taught ruthlessly to be responsible for where they thrown things out which they have used. But the first part of the equation has to be the corporations who produce goods. It is easier to control the actions of one hundred corporations than it is to control the actions of 100,000 people.

    This issue belongs to each and every one of us. We all use plastics. We may not dump them into the oceans with our own hands, but we use them. A world wide tax should be set in place to help fund this operation. Would it not make sense, for us, our planet and our children's, children's future?
    The earths health should be our main, and most important mission over the coming decades.

      A tax for what to clean up plastics? There are sadly far more concerning things out there hence it has such a low priority, like global warming. It's a *luxury* to even be able to care and think about plastic trash, you realize this I hope? The majority of the world's population isn't even living in the west, we're talking about poor people living in miserable poverty with little to no education. How about we fix those problems first because it'll be a LOT easier dealing with everything else once people are united and on the same page. I was hoping this would be something about teaching populations not to pollute in the first place. About showing lawmakers changing sanitation policies. About *actually* stopping it at its source: people on land.

    Great the amount of real garbage that is being removed, but I wonder how much of that plant matter helps the oceans with cycling resources from the land to the oceans and back again. All the leaves, branches and grasses that you see them pulling out of the rivers is what I'm referring to.

    The source of the problem is poor people don't care about trash. It's all the poor countries that are causing the problem. We need to educate the poor people everywhere.

    Always love hearing about this project. But of course, issues: cleanups still catch sealife despite the monitoring -- largely from shipping's past clearance of the vast algal mats for easier passage, so the resident species of those now only have the Patches as breeding grounds & refugia. Hard call how to handle that.

    And then they can take that trash and maybe start filling the Grand Canyon .
    The Grand Canyon is our next best bet for a landfill .
    Reasons-
    #1 Centralized dump means less gas usage
    #2 A place for all garbage even plastic and hazmat
    #3 Jobs maintaining this fill site for years to come
    #4 Better for the environment
    #5 After time I see housing developments where there used to be a hole in the ground

    Those countries need to change culture of throwing trash everywhere to start with. And limiting plastic use. It’s endless. The ones creating the trash seem not to care.

    We need to focus more time and money on waste management to keep these plastics out of the ocean in the first place.

      "waste management" is a fraud when it comes to plastics. the only way to keep it out of the Earth is to not produce it.

    Make sure ever piece of plastic that comes into your possession ends up being collected for recycling or goes straight to a landfill. Landfills aren't the 'enemy' we used to think they were- we're not running out of land and our local university gets power and heat from gasses piped from them. While idling my car on a winter day to keep my work crew warm on break, a coworker attacked another for having a straw in his coffee- "Do you hate sea turtles?" was the leading question. I told her anything we put into the trash doesn't end up in the ocean, but me idling my car was a real issue. Plastics just tossed into the environment are a huge issue, they should never go there. I only wear natural fibers so my local area isn't more polluted with microplactics (we have an individual septic system and a well). This is mostly an issue of littering, on the individual and commercial scale. Blame plastic, but it's really the people who either refuse to do it right or have no viable system for dealing with the trash.

    The true problem is highlighted by the Jamaican guy in the rain wearing a single use plastic thing against the wet. This problem has to solved at the root, at the consumption, at the disposal, and the production. Still, good to get rid of the trash that's already there.

    Fishing nets should have serial numbers on them and we should be able to track the source of the sale and the purchase and every fishing net found in the ocean should require that the person who threw it there lose their fishing license and their boat and never be allowed to fish or boat on the ocean again
