  • Indonesia ranks as one of the world's biggest contributors to ocean plastics, many of which come from rivers. The local nonprofit Sungai Watch saves about 3 metric tons of trash from entering the ocean every day with simple barriers and manual labor. We visited the island of Bali to meet the three young siblings behind the nonprofit and learn why a tropical paradise has a huge trash problem.

When I was in Bali in 2007, a woman was dumping foam pear-protecting sheaths into the storm drain. I said "You know that drains to the ocean, yes". "Yes, I know!" she replied with a smile. A few days later I was on a ferry to Lombok. A father with his young kids were picking aluminum and plastic out of the garbage cans. "Recycling!" I thought. "What a good father!". Then I watched him throw the bottles and cans overboard, just so his small children could watch them float away. There is no fixing this without fixing the culture.

I studied industrial design and engineering specialising in innovation and there was a total of about 20 minutes on 'Cradle to grave' design, which means to know where it goes in the end so you design with that in mind, universities and schools NEED to embed this thought process throughout teaching anything in relation to product creation, it is not the individual who buys the products whole responsibility, it is totally on the designers and companies who ignore the end of their products life.

I bought a pair of Indosole flipflops after seeing the video on reusing old car tyres. I must say they are by far the best flip flops I have had in terms of comfort, and durability, the ones I got look classy too. I liked the blend of the company using recycled materials combined with ethical labour practices combined with the fact it is made in Indonesia. On holiday in Oman I ended up the flipflops instead of shoes/ boots to walk many Kilometres a day and didn't get any blisters. I even abseiled down a waterfall with them (not a smart move I know, but I didn't have any other footwear with me that I wanted to get wet).

First of all, thank you 🙏🏻
.second of all, i hope that not only foreign citizens that move the community, but the local people who stayed in those areas could lift up and being innovative for management waste processing, so it could decrease the pollution within the area.

I've never truly understood why is the problem of where this stuff contaminating their waterways is coming from addressed, rather than just cleaning it up over and over again for it to happen again a few months later.

We … each us as individuals… have the power to change things by how we consume. A shift always starts bit by bit, one person at a time until we realize each of us has been part of creating huge changes by way of the exponential curve action!

I've been living in Bali long enough to tell you that, sadly, people there, not all of course, still do not care about the trash. I've seen both wealthy and poor people throwing their trash in the river or on the road. The funniest thing is every rainy season, when their beaches are full of trash, they keep saying, "IT'S FROM JAVA." Well, that could be true, but the locals in Bali aren't helping the situation either.
The Balinese government has been taking money from each tourist coming to the island, and where does all that money go? No one knows.
Indeed, Bali is the ISLAND OF GOD$.

Woooow bravo ,well done. In the same time It’s so ironic, why always foreigners/ westerners more pay attention to take initiated with genial ideas and solutions how to take care of the nature from polluted of the rubbish . Where are the local governments and well educated people to contribute to their own country? It so shame isn’t it. Again well done guys and keep going. Greeting from Scandinavian

The issue with the trash issue in Indonesia is mostly the mentality of the people, but also the lack of recycling system& & infrastructure from the govt. sure some places have segregated bins for recycling, but that doesn’t matter if they will all end up in the same dump truck as one big pile of trash to chuck at the landfill. It’s all lip service, and our politicians are well-versed in the art of bullshit.
Note that all the initiatives in the vid are led by westerners. If it’s by a local, most do not have or will not spend the resources to take it to the factory level.
This is also only Bali, the most well-known place for westerners in Indonesia. The situation outside Bali is generally worse due to the lack of westerners.

Balinese villages up the stream always loved to brag about how clean their villages are. This is one major way how they achieve that. Dumping it to the river. But not done as a community act, but as individuals. Imagine you have hundreds of thousand of people up stream doing this daily from a simple candy packaging to house hold trash. Watch for some guy or lady drive a scooter with trashes dangling on the bike, and you will see them going to the nearest river that is not in their village and merrily tossing the rubbish. They wont do it the their own river so they dont get to feel bad or caught. I have seen this since 80’s.
