This statement is too broad to be of any use. There are hundreds of types of plastics, of which degradation mechanisms can hardly be compared. As for PET, the amount of chain incisions during melting and re-extrusion is actually quite low, if done carefully, decrease in molecular weight is under 5%. For plastics like PET, these broken chains can also be 'repaired' fairly easy and economically using a process called Solid State Polymerization. The amount of times one can recycle PET is not limited by the "destroyed polymer chains", but mainly limited by contamination and discoloration, which is nearly impossible to remove during regular mechanical recycling.

But there's still lots and lots of ignorant people who are using plastic and even wearing it now
And half these clothes are being made for big brands. So likely lots of clueless consumers in the West, Japan and Korea are also wearing plastic, and increasingly Africa too.
Sometimes I think the Arabs got lucky. Due to the amount of sanctions, they're basically forced to use and wear and eat only what is locally produced from traditional materials. That's going to save them in the long run

The utter idiocy of people in this comment section not understanding that polyester is not just for garments. (Even though it is a major component for durability in some types of clothing). It is a very important material to make bag backs , shoes, tent equipment, sporting equipment, ropes etc where you need the durability of a polyester. Things that cotton can’t make.
Not every thread is made to sleep in
Also, cotton farming is an extremely water consuming activity. Even treating few meters of cotton can take up to 20L of water. Its not a magic fabric. Nothing is .
Cotton and polyester can have their own purposes. It doesn’t need to be one or the other

It’s nearly impossible to get some labels off. I have noticed some brands starting to use “shrink wrap” type plastic film for labels, so they can be easily removed. But then THAT plastic goes in the trash while the bottle gets recycled. So idk…what’s worse?

    • @luxinvictus9018

You can't use recycled plastic in space technology. Most things that go into space require extremely hi tech parts which need to made from expensive allows and metals like gold, silicon and titanium. That's why they're so costly and expensive to make.
Even clothes is not a good idea. People don't realise that plastic just isn't that good. It's low quality, toxic and hard to recycle. We'd be actually far better off using cotton, wood and leather

Why, because of polymer fiber clothing?
"Declining fertility rates" are not the reason for the decline in neo-natality, it's people no longer affording to have children due to the ever increasing cost of living, among a lot of other reasons, none of them being that they are not fertile enough due to microplastics.
Fertility is most likely just fine, but it takes more than just beimg "fertile" in order to have kids, you know...

It's not the recycling company that is bad. It's the one who invented plastic. Some of us here in our country are going back to old things like using bags or containers made of paper of coconut leaves. I wonder why these things were pasted out before. Could be for the plast industry to boom even more.
And yes, I've read this somewhere, some scientist found microplastics in humans' blood. This could also be one of the cause why even if we exercise and eat healthily, we are still sickly compared to humans before.

There is so much of this garbage clothing out there that literal shipping container ships full of “old” cloths are going to places like Chile. They have huge markets for reselling this clothing and whatever doesn’t sell was trucked to a dump site. This dumpsite in the Atacama Desert was around 59,000 tons of discarded clothing.
Last year there was a wild fire in the clothing dump site that lasted weeks and sent toxic fumes to cities and towns nearby.
Polyester isn’t sustainable by any measure.

I'm glad these folks have come up with this technology; but there are easier ways to reduce our use of polyester. I don't buy fast fashion, it's too cheaply made; buy good quality stuff, use it longer, avoid the latest fashions. I can stand to wear a cotton/poly blend, but I avoid pure polyester clothing; it's not comfortable.
