Hundreds of farms across America used wastewater sludge as cheap fertilizer to fertilize crops for people and animals to graze, but absurd levels of PFA's levels were detected in the meat and vegetables above the FDA allowed levels.
Wastewater sludge should be sent to landfills, not used as fertilizer. There are likely many substances including PFAS present in the sludge, I would be concerned about microplastics as well.
I am retired now and only have a decorative BOD5 bottle in my home as a reminder of the years I spent analyzing wastewater influents and effluents for our environmental agency. Lots of time spent at STP’s also and I appreciate this guy who narrates the video. He and everything around him looks so familiar and I miss it.

Also if new to cooking, please when handling waste cooking oil, put it into a waste container (bunched up aluminum foil works), let it cool/solidify & chuck it into the trash. Simply dumping in your sink puts at high risk your sewer pipes clogging once cooling & solidifying. The combination of cooking oil & toilet paper does in even the craziest of sewage pipes. This coming from a water resources engineer.

It really depends on the wipe, generally those wipes never break down (as seen from the jar lol). I've had brands that disintegrate after sitting in the toilet water, but they suck for wiping. Just get a trash can with a lid and throw them away instead.

Most water treatment plants aren't equipped to remove or treat water from pfas/micro plastics. Recently the EPA has been authorized to come after PFAS manufacturers that knowingly release it into the environment, and water municipal suppliers will have to get equipment to detect and remove 6 types of PFAS chemicals. (There's a lot more forms of PFAS chemicals but these 6 are the most widely circulating and toxic) Personaly I'm wondering how water bottle manufacturers are gonna repackage water.
If they stay in our bodies and they find them in rain then I'm sure they arent removing them anytime soon. It's already in the rain cycle and all sorts of other things.
You know they're called 'forever chemicals' for a reason right? The relative low reactivity of perfluronated compounds makes removal without more elaborate (and expensive at this scale) infrastructure impossible. Same applies for heavy metals, a simple ion-exchange resin/bed would do but again - expensive. Given we're talking public infrastructure, thats coming out of the taxpayers pocket first.
Most communities allow citizens or school students tour facilities when asked. Some even have open houses yearly for public awareness. Most people are shocked and amazed seeing what's involved with wastewater treatment.

30 years ago I visited my towns wastewater facility with my school, they did things exactly the same back then, the only difference is that here we are not allowed to use the bio solids as fertilizer because of the high levels of heavy metals, it's kind of sad to see that now 30 years later they still haven't found a solution to that problem (but I guess it all comes down to funding, more important to give tax cuts to the 1%)

Be careful to unferstand that Chicago has many combined sewers. That is, rainwater (aka stormwater) goes into drains that enter the sewer system. Many years ago, Chicago constructed a huge underground storage system for combined sewer overflows that occur when the sewage collection system is overwhelmed by rainwater and would BEFORE the construction of underground storage, go directly to the river. Now it slowly goes to the wastewater treatment plant. Modern development of small cities have a separate collection system for stormwater. This allows wastewater treatment plants to operate far more efficiently.

Water becomes drinkable once it enters the soil and filters through it. The soil minerals are able to attach the contaminants like heavy metals or nitrates to their surfaces while the water goes into the groundwater. This is why we need good soils. They are ideally covered with natural vegetation because the vegetation sort of replenishes the capacity of the soil to do this.

Built in 1930, expanded significantly in 1939, not sure of cost. How many people work there? About half of them. Sorry bad joke, about 150 trades and 150 operators ( those, operating engineers, electrical operators, laborers) the lab and research is about 130. The analyze for other 6 plants
I'd like to know what they do for disinfection. It wasn't covered, but there's no way they don't do it. They also didn't touch on phosphorus removal. So I'm guessing they are using an enhanced BNR? I'd also liked to have seen their digester and energy recapture setups. Very interesting to see their process, though.

Also if new to cooking, please when handling waste cooking oil, put it into a waste container (bunched up aluminum foil works), let it cool/solidify & chuck it into the trash. Simply dumping in your sink puts at high risk your sewer pipes clogging once cooling & solidifying.
The combination of cooking oil & toilet paper does in even the craziest of sewage pipes.

It really depends on the wipe, generally those wipes never break down (as seen from the jar lol). I've had brands that disintegrate after sitting in the toilet water, but they suck for wiping.
Just get a trash can with a lid and throw them away instead.

I would've liked a mention of PFAS (forever chemicals), heavy metals, etc and how they are (or are not) removed from the biosolids.
Exactly what I said. Those little savior pellets they love are ruining farmers lives and possibly damaging our health along the way. Pfas, lead other toxic forever chemicals are plentiful and now they're planting it directly into our food source...
They are not.
Most water treatment plants aren't equipped to remove or treat water from pfas/micro plastics. Recently the EPA has been authorized to come after PFAS manufacturers that knowingly release it into the environment, and water municipal suppliers will have to get equipment to detect and remove 6 types of PFAS chemicals. (There's a lot more forms of PFAS chemicals but these 6 are the most widely circulating and toxic)
Personaly I'm wondering how water bottle manufacturers are gonna repackage water.
If they stay in our bodies and they find them in rain then I'm sure they arent removing them anytime soon. It's already in the rain cycle and all sorts of other things.
You know they're called 'forever chemicals' for a reason right? The relative low reactivity of perfluronated compounds makes removal without more elaborate (and expensive at this scale) infrastructure impossible. Same applies for heavy metals, a simple ion-exchange resin/bed would do but again - expensive. Given we're talking public infrastructure, thats coming out of the taxpayers pocket first.
Most communities allow citizens or school students tour facilities when asked. Some even have open houses yearly for public awareness. Most people are shocked and amazed seeing what's involved with wastewater treatment.

I lived in Stickney for 12 years (grew up around Stickney my whole life). We call it Stinkney for a reason. The whole village smells like $#!t after heavy rains. Add being in the direct flight path to Midway Airport's Runway 13C, and low-flying planes coming in for arrival every 3 minutes, and it's a great place to live!

30 years ago I visited my towns wastewater facility with my school, they did things exactly the same back then, the only difference is that here we are not allowed to use the bio solids as fertilizer because of the high levels of heavy metals, it's kind of sad to see that now 30 years later they still haven't found a solution to that problem (but I guess it all comes down to funding, more important to give tax cuts to the 1%)

Be careful to unferstand that Chicago has many combined sewers. That is, rainwater (aka stormwater) goes into drains that enter the sewer system. Many years ago, Chicago constructed a huge underground storage system for combined sewer overflows that occur when the sewage collection system is overwhelmed by rainwater and would BEFORE the construction of underground storage, go directly to the river. Now it slowly goes to the wastewater treatment plant. Modern development of small cities have a separate collection system for stormwater. This allows wastewater treatment plants to operate far more efficiently.

Water becomes drinkable once it enters the soil and filters through it. The soil minerals are able to attach the contaminants like heavy metals or nitrates to their surfaces while the water goes into the groundwater. This is why we need good soils. They are ideally covered with natural vegetation because the vegetation sort of replenishes the capacity of the soil to do this.
Every once in a while they find a dead baby on that first grate. Happened often at Deer Island sewage plant in Boston. Found a leg the other day.

Built in 1930, expanded significantly in 1939, not sure of cost. How many people work there? About half of them. Sorry bad joke, about 150 trades and 150 operators ( those, operating engineers, electrical operators, laborers) the lab and research is about 130. The analyze for other 6 plants

I'd like to know what they do for disinfection. It wasn't covered, but there's no way they don't do it. They also didn't touch on phosphorus removal. So I'm guessing they are using an enhanced BNR? I'd also liked to have seen their digester and energy recapture setups. Very interesting to see their process, though.

Could you discuss the concentration of PFAS levels in the sludge and biosolids? Farmers spread sludge for years in the 70s in Maine and now the state pays for granular activated carbon treatment systems for every homeowner who has usage drinking water due to the PFAS levels.
After working in a facility with a 1mgd capacity; 1mg per minute is insane.

Chlorine, UV, may bromine in some places. My facility uses chlorine and UV.
The plant on the southeast side had giant freshwater sponges take up residence in the discharge basin where it dumps into the Grand Calumet river.
What about collecting the biogas that is created during this process? 🤔
