Sounds interesting! I'd also enjoy seeing a followup to this particular documentary, finding the couple married in this show, and seeing what their thoughts are now on bride kidnapping -- it's been over a decade since this documentary first aired.
Wtf!!!!! This’s straight up lies!!! I’m from Saudi Arabia there’s 0% of SA in our schools bcuz IT’S NOT MIXED we only have all girls or all boys school
This’s shocking how u ppl would shamelessly accuse islam of the things that happens routinely in ur non muslim countries in my muslim country it’s a CRIM to even cat call women even asking for a woman’s number is considered illegal us muslim women feel the safest in our countries unlike the women in western and non muslim countries the statistics of sexual assault are over the roof yet u have the audacity to make these videos against islam i mean we know it’s a propaganda but unfortunately many ignorants believe it
actually inform yourself before assuming something idiotic. The horrid sexual assualt is forbiden and seen as a major sin to do with Islam because you are harming someone's well being. Disrespect to a religion because you cant tell the difference is real ignorant. I mean how can the historian be more informed about the reality than you?
I'm from Kyrgyzstan. I am Kyrgyz. This is a very wild tradition that is disappearing because girls and women no longer want to tolerate it in our country! And I'm glad of that. They also tried to steal me, but I fought with everyone and still left. I am confident that this cruel tradition will soon disappear.
@@vegasfinest702 Righttttt....because "everyone gets married like this there" means that every single woman there should accept and be happy with the fact that they're being kidnapped.. I bet you would want to live there and be kidnapped too, don't you?
The girl being kidnapped and then 3 men holding her, her yelling mom. My heart broke, I felt so helpless like how she was feeling at that moment. Almost cried.
@Shadowfeather-sb4vc ikr all these fake democrats say they feel bad for other cultures, but when it comes to eating dog and stuff like this, they instantly change their views to fit conservative american morales
it's even scarier when you realize that someone could actually be kidnapping a girl in plain sight with no intention of marrying her and people would just think that it's the tradition.
i actually ended up showing middle finger at phone screen when she cried... she totally listened to society when she should've stood by her side specially when the child said that the man was not a good person. but she chose to go with the society. i so much would've wanted to punch her face if she was doing that drama near me.
She got kidnapped, then they found her, AND THEN SHE GAVE HER BACK WILLINGLY. to be raped and held hostage. Then you know he just kidnapped another bride.. Disgusting. Maybe she should have thought twice as a mother doing that to her baby girl.... That poor fucking girl. I feel bad for HER, not the mother that fucking GAVE HER TO HIM.
@@Supermaninpyjama What do you expect to happen when, as was stated in the video, a society works so hard to make girls obedient from the moment they can probably communicate. Peer pressure, cultural pressure, are things that have effected all people at some point to some degree, unfortunatelythe ramifications can be severe and devastating. How hypocritical and ignorant of you to imbue yourself with so much superiority when you'd stoop so low as to kick someone while they're down. She's going to feel guilty for the rest of her life, no keyboard-coward has the right to pretend to be more upset about something she actually *has* to survive.
The Little Blerdmaid I bet you she wasn’t crying when they took her, a mother should always be protecting her kids at all costs no matter what culture or religion bs you deal with. She let them take her away knowing she didn’t want to, she failed as a parent in my opinion.
You’re wrong. In my country they also used to kidnap brides but nowadays they do it less because they pay a fine for that now, which most of them can not afford, although some pay it willingly. Anyways, you’re wrong about what you said about her mother, she probably didn’t think it was necessary or good for her daughter when they gave her back to the kidnapper. She says in the video, the cousins etc put pressure on them, telling the « it’s tradition ! You’re wrong you shouldn’t take her back ! ». She didn’t develop it but as it was also in my country’s tradition to kidnap brides I can tell you for sure that she didn’t want to give her daughter back but couldn’t do otherwise because she’s a woman and she has to OBEY. So when the male cousins / older men in the family got angry about them bringing their daughter back, when they scolded the girl’s dad for doing so, when they brought up « it’s tradition! » the girl’s dad probably felt ashamed in front of the elder men (cousins, uncles..) and in those societies you HAVE TO respect older men and DO what they tell you to do, the dad probably decided to give the girl back to the kidnaper and the mom couldn’t do anything about it but accept it because SHE IS A WOMAN and she CAN NOT argue with her husband and other men in the family. If she talks back or disobeys she can be beaten or anyways, the men can just bring the girl back to the kidnaper’s house forcefully even if the mother is against. Anyways, I can guarantee you that this mom wasn’t happy about giving her daughter back autherwise they wouldn’t have even brought her home in first place. She just had to accept it because she’s a woman and she can not do anything because men decide and she has to obey. No one can understand her sorrow except those who went through the same thing. That thing happened to my aunt, she was kidnapped and run away but her uncle forced her to get married to her kidnapper whom she didn’t even knew.

It is just sad that tradition is above their religion and law.
Unless somebody here is from that culture, nobody can really talk about it. You can't speak about things unless you are versed in them. Otherwise you don't know what the hell you are talking about. I can only speak about it from an American perspective, and an American perspective on a Kyrgyzstan tradition is irrelevant
This actually happened to two female tourists a few years back, they got their national embassy involved and were able to return home after about a week.
No. They kiddnapp only women they know. Not strangers. Cmon a little bit of common sens. A tradition is something that belong to them and they societies. Kyrgyzstan has changed a lot in 2015 after a big scandal. The police stopped ignoring these crimes and imprisoning people. Both on TV and at school they began to tell people that this was a bad custom and to make films about it.
@@wisteriafleur3522 I think he is talking about that case when girl got killed in the process. “All girls must get married” “Calm down, you’ll be happy” Words cannot describe how thankful I am to not have to go through this. I feel so so bad for her.😭
Right? I have no idea what I'd do if I was in that situation. But at least that girl did want to marry that man, even if it wasn't right there and then. I feel worse for the others who are kidnapped by men they don't want and forcefully married and raped.
Kixi They have no choice but to agree. They are shunned by their entire community if the disgusting ritual is completed and they refuse to play happy families. This so-called kidnapping is just a game. The bride and the groom already know each other and they make the plan. Different countries have different traditions. Indian brides are suppose to be shy and cry before leaving their houses for the groom's. If they don't, aunties talk behind them. I think it is similar in Kirgizstan. The fact that nobody in this video really cared about her and just laughed at her for being kidnapped and taken away everyone laughed at her in the whole entire video which is very sad.
But at the same time this is to spread awareness, they wouldn't agree to record this if the dude and the camera guy had stopped them, so what could they do? They'll just kidnap her again while refusing to record this.
The worst thing is the fact that those old grandmas besides her are taking it as a some sort of joke even though they've felt the same feeling of being kidnapped without you knowing anything about it before.
I don't think they were married the same way since, as it was mentioned in the video, due to communism such traditional/religious practises were forbidden. Although, I think they actually knew that girl wanted to marry him in the end (since they were already a couple) and she was just pretending to not want to get kidnapped in order to not let others believe that she was desperate to get married by complying from the start (again I'm not entirely sure that is 100% sure about this but, in the end, I think the girl was smiling and accepting the whole thing...)
I don't know what is worse, the men seeing nothing wrong with removing someone's bodily autonomy and integrity and not caring about consent, or how other older and supposedly wiser women are playing into this. It's heartbreaking. The sooner this "tradition" goes, the more people's lives will be saved.
Traditional issues require traditional solutions. Guys suppose to give huge amounts of money to SO's parents as "kalym" so it's cheaper to "steal" her with her own consent of course. Sometimes the reasons are different. I've seen such kidnapping once when visiting rural town. Girl was Kurdish and parents were against it so he came to her home at night with headlights off and she got into his car with her bags. They ran away to another town to register marriage and their parents were NOT happy about it :) even tho they dated since middle school. However sometimes they literally kidnap people despite it being illegal. In 2021 there were 500 kidnappings for 48500 ordinary marriages. VICE being VICE likes to reinforce racist stereotypes about non western countries tho.
'Your a girl, all girls get married.' imagine being kidnapped by a bunch of men, all your family watching and laughing, being held down in a car, and being told that. Jesus.
I don’t care if it’s a tradition, this is absolutely disgusting. No girl deserves this, even if she wants to be married. the stress and trauma that these men have gave her is awful.
Yeah apparently their tradition is like a double edge sword that also can hurt them. For example remember that one dude that kidnaps some person sister and that dude get revenge by kidnapping the kidnapper sister as well and they gonna be like let call it a even.

And i always ask them this quiestion-"Do you believe men and women should be given equal opportunities in life, career wise, job wise, etc" Because if you dont think that women should be paid the same as men for the same job, then you dont get to make that arguement. A lot of women choose to quit their jobs and stay at home to raise their kids,in which case they are trusting their husbands to take care of them financially. Now if the man decided he wanted to divorce his wife, but the wife had not been to work in years cause she was busy taking care of him and his wife, she would not have the financial stability to live a normal life. I agree that there are a lot of gold diging women who are terribe people. But the same goes for men. The saddest part is that if the woman rejects in our culture by calling her dad/brother to pick her up ,for example, the man´s family side spread it around so that the woman will never be able to marry someone because of the ´´shame´´. It happend in West Europe and my mother was illegally married at the age of 16/17

"The poor girl yelling for her mom just broke my heart!" Look more carefully. .... 10:40 and 12:50 . ....She is a pretty good actress though. (I'm sure that bride kidnapping is a real and serious issue in Kyrgyzstan; but a great many of them are actually staged by the agreement of the young men and women because the brides' families do not approve of their daughters' choices in fiances. In other words, many of these "kidnappings" are ritualized elopements, and there's no particular incentive on the part of the brides to admit this to anyone -- including foreign film crews. ....The only solution is for civil society groups in Kyrgyzstan to more aggressively promote the idea of grown women being able to OPENLY choose their own husbands and more generally to pursue romantic relationships without being slut-shamed.)
As a girl I'm crying with her so much that my fingers are shaking with a blurry vision. Some traditions should be buried with the ancient times please everyone have some human rights and it's against it
This is so backwards... The family keeps apologizing and saying they're guilty, but they don't seem one bit ashamed because it's part of their culture. @Jooliuspoolius Yeah. Let's show these women the righteous, holy social structure of western democracy that unironically believes a man can turn into a woman lol
Nope. Everyone can have their own beliefs but no one can force their own beliefs on others in actions that affect them like this. Nations don’t matter. Otherwise, if the man’s tradition is kidnapping the bride, then the bride can say that her tradition is killing the man who kidnapped her.
@Yunus Hailey You can continue your tradition in a way that affects only yourself and those who wants to be affected. Just because you care about your national identity doesn't mean others in your country do, and they have a right not to subscribe to the identity and abandon the culture. I know I don't care about my country and its culture, and other people in other countries can also choose to feel the same way if they want. No one should be identified by their country anyways, unless they as an individual wants to.
@Yunus Hailey Your tradition is cruel and evil. Every tradition is just an idea that began in the past. Once we used to put black cats in a wooden box, and smash the box and the cat because of superstition. That nonsense was repeated for hundreds of years, and it even lives on today, but the wooden box is now painted and the content is candy. Still utterly stupid. Just because an idea is old, it doesn't make it good. On the contrary, it's stupid not to take old ideas up to revision. That is how a society and a people improve themselves. That is the very reason every country - including yours - has extinct traditions in the first place. Otherwise, we would still perform some stupid nonsense going back to the stone-age, simply because "Well it's tradition".

I live in this country. older women think that it is necessary that this is a tradition. They do not even think it could be otherwise. The young generation of girls now does not want to be abducted. People who live in the capital are very modern especially the younger generation. in 2013 a law was passed on the illegality of the abduction. Nowadays, there are less and less abductions. "Because it's tradition" alone is probably the most backwards and destructive mentality anyone can have. Yes, that was done in the past. But WHY was it done, given the context of the era in which its practice began, and does that context still apply to the present day? Following the old ways without properly understanding the reasons why they are as they are is pointless unless you're a child who isn't old enough to know better yet, and does nothing but pay lip service to "honor" a time that has long since passed. It does not help you or your country move forward, it does not prove that you're better than the people that bring drugs and violence wherever they go, and it does nothing to even truly honor those traditions.
Our societies change so quickly, that we mentally can't keep up. They literally start their relationship off, by him being an untrustworthy, lying piece of shit who can’t keep his word from the get go. If they don’t think that plants a seed in these poor women’s heads, it does. (Doubt they care)...It is so fucked up. *Not only that, but it is disrespectful to the men themselves* ! @@Supermaninpyjama What do you expect to happen when, as was stated in the video, a society works so hard to make girls obedient from the moment they can probably communicate.

Because if you dont think that women should be paid the same as men for the same job, then you dont get to make that arguement.

It's still a kidnapping.
Imagine this, all the these women were kidnapped, they got older with time... and these same older women joining the tradition and still continue doing it to young girls. They know the pain, but they still do it, even tho it happen to them too. And those young girls you saw kidnapped in the video, will eventually get old... and they will do it for their son too. Amazing!!!
But there are still people who think that this is a tradition. The girl and the boy are introduced to the parents before the wedding. If they like each other they marry. We will not be able to become such an open and tolerant country as the United States and European countries. But progress is the younger generation wants to change.
@@Comebackherein2050 I think a solution might the leaving of the younger generations to capital cities at a young age for example for school or work, so they can't abduct the girls. If they have finished school and got married with their consent, they can consider going back to their village.

Because the women ( especially elderly) are brainwashed themselves
Well, in CIS countries wife abuse or this type of thing is usual thing. Most of our elder generation are brainwashed af and live by this “traditions”.
Maybe propably dont see anything else fun in life, than try to convince this young woman be his wife. Is it that Kyrgz people just chill in their Kyrgz lands with not needing to do much anything.
There are higher abuse rates in those families. If you have been coerced your whole married life and live in fear, there’s no telling what you would do.

Kinda awkward, I'd say
to be fair, he is a reporter. any sign that he's in disagreement, i'm sure the groomsmen will be quick to remove him from watching or recording. you have to build rapport with these people in order to capture the reality of the situation. it is obvious that the reporter felt truly uncomfortable with this tradition.
he was doing it to get footage, at the end he called the practice shitty. You have to understand he’s in a foreign country filming a cultural practice so if he disagreed there, they wouldn’t let him report on this issue. He couldn’t expose this practice for the rest of the world.
PREACH
Our societies change so quickly, that we mentally can't keep up. Traditions, that meant to keep community alive and thriving are now obsolete, but it's impossible to change one's way of thinking as quickly. It worked for your parents, they want a good stable life for you, so they do to you, what what done with them. How do you explain "Mom, Dad, this sacred tradition that build your life is now obsolete and unnecessary. Trust me." The only thing that helps is education, and unfortunately, many traditions don't place enough value on it.
icy dawn female mutilation has nothing to do with religion, it’s a culture/tradition. I’m a Muslim woman and I don’t know any woman that has been through that.
I still believe in the inherent value of tradition, because so many traditions genuinely have good reasons behind them...but you're right, it's always important to think critically and ask why,
"Nowadays whenever a guy is proposing, most of the time he gets a negative answer from girls." Yeah, because they're afraid they'll get kidnapped!
No it's different. If she refuses then it shows she is not a slut so she will every time he proposes so what the film maker was saying is that for the sake of reputation she has to be kidnapped. It's sad and awful that there is so many layers keeping people from what they want in Turkic country's.

Hey lets seppuku this friday 不见不散 Jk
this is a pretty good old tradition and i would love to see that happening all around the world, it is a good representation of sharia and all must respect it, allah gave us this legacy and we must follow and propagate it, think about it if a woman is not contested upon then what is the value of her, at the end she's gonna end up like a useless thing in the home, that's why she must prepare herself for this contest and must not take this practice as kidnapping, rather it is more like "the one who comes first gets it all."

The young men are probably scared of being rejected by their families, therefore they are doing this to remain connected to their families. I want to reiterate that I do not like this practice, it is wrong and I think it should be eliminated.
