Not everyone in Zambia has a straightforward education. Some children have to come out of school for a time to let a sibling learn. But many countries have a system of educating adults. Often in the evenings when the days work is done. Let's hope for the future and work where possible.

While I agree, that is a pretty simple take on a very complex issue. If her mother dies and she is not married to a suitable man, it could also result trauma and disability, possibly even contracting HIV herself because she will not have any protection. These people seem to understand it is wrong or at least not ideal, but they see it as the lesser of two evils. The mother genuinely seems to want to protect her children. Not only does this give her one less mouth to feed, but it gives her means to feed her other children. This is compounded by the fact that she is likely a single mother, or will become one soon. Until you can provide another path out of poverty, treatment for HIV, access to maternal and general healthcare, and alteration of long, engrained, traditions, this will be an intractable problem. This is a multifaceted systemic issue, not about teaching people that marrying children is wrong. Age of consent isn’t a universal law handed down from on high, it’s one we as societies have decided for ourselves. Even in places where the law agrees with you, if culture and circumstance doesn’t agree, it will keep happening. This is an absolutely tragedy, but we shouldn’t be treating these people like they simply don’t know better. It’s a horrific decision they feel they are forced to make.

I’m not trying to minimize how heartbreaking of a situation this is, but it’s not just trading their daughter for a cow. Cattle in many third world countries can be the means to escape death by starvation for many families. Even having just one cow can make a life or death difference. It’s a very sad situation all around.
Her poor TERMINALLY ILL single mother wanted her daughter to have a husband to take care of her. It is easy to push school as some way out of poverty but unrealistic in a village like that, there isn't anything there and her poor family can't afford to send her somewhere to further her education. Having a husband provide for her was always her best option considering where she lives.

I saw a very beautiful little girl, the way she looked at me with pain in her eyes. I asked about adopting her, I was told she will be married to a 54 year old man. She was sold to him before she was born. The marriage will take place once she's 12 years old!!!
I'm Zambian but raised in the US. My mom always told me how my grandfather went against societal norms esp with raising his daughters. He made them go to school and such initiations were not a common place. It was harsh but he didn't let that influence him. And now his daughters are all educated and escaped all of this. No matter what, you can always break the cycle and create another one. I live for VICE news and their documentaries seeing my country this way is heartbreaking.
I live in lusaka, and my girlfriend was also one of the lucky ones who was able to finish school. She's now working on her bachelor degree. But it's not uncommon today that girls do finish school. But few continue into higher learning, like bachelor or masters degrees.

Zambian here. Sex with a minor is illegal and a criminal offense in Zambia. So yes technically it would be illegal marry a 14 year old. But the problem isn't necessary with the enforcement with a law. There is a loophole! Zambia has "dual" legal system where customary law is often applied side by side with written law. So as long as the man marries a child under customary (traditional) law he can get away with it. One attempt to seal this loophole has been to prosecute perpetrators under a new education act which forbids the removal of a child from school in order to marry them off. But motivation for taking the girl out of school is difficult to prove. Many parents plead poverty and not marriage as the reason.
It happens alot in northern Nigeria trading thier daughters for money and food for men up to 40 yrs and above and yet still this girls get maltreated and beaten they don’t let them go to school only to bare children this happens in most of Africa mostly the northerners and Muslim

Fact of the matter is that culture is simply a word that means the collective behaviors and practices of a group, and culture can in fact be harmful, both to individuals or the society in general. Foot binding or corsets for example, are cultural practices that can cause physical harm and deformity. Criticizing culture isn't inherently a bad thing. Women in the west still wouldn't receive education if our societies didn't question that culture.

My aunt was 15 when she married her 26yr old husband, unfortunately he died last month at age 78 and they were married for 50 something years. And have a very large family kids grandkids great grandkids.

We know in reality that this girl may very well contract AIDs anyway if her husband cheats, and that this situation is far worse than if she were allowed to continue school and pursue higher education, but this is what the mother legitimately thinks. Many people in countries like Zambia have barely gone more than 10km from their own villages. The roads are so bad it's hours just to get to a hospital. The school is right next to their homes. They live off the land. They have no reason to leave and experience new things, nor the means to. They don't see other ways of living, all they know is what they, their grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and other women in the community went through, so it seems normal to them. You tell a kid about Santa Claus and they believe it 100%, until they get old enough to catch on that it's just the adults pretending and lying to make the holiday more fun, and to trick kids into acting good in hopes of getting what they want. What happens if every adult legitimately believes in Santa Claus and the whole community agrees he is real? Wel, most people would never question it or think otherwise. That's how culture works. Just replace "Santa Claus" with any religion, or even a philosophy like communism, and you'll see my point. When you're told something since birth, and everyone around you believes and practices it, you will too. There will always be a few exceptions, but the majority of people believe what their culture/society tells them to believe. Especially in other societies where the focus is often more on community than individuality, which is the norm in a lot of Africa and Asia, as opposed to our very individual rights focused western culture.

I am a Journalist from Zambia; this documentary must be old probably 7-8 years. Zambia has made tremendous progress in ending Child Marriages, particularly in Eastern Province where the Documentary was shot. The country now has a law in place, the Children´s Code Act, which speaks strongly to such issues and is effectively being implemented. Most rural communities are well sensitized and aware that child marriage is a crime, various interventions have also been put in place by stakeholders to keep girls in schools. It would nice if you could do a follow up documentary, otherwise good job on this one.

I am an African, Kenyan... but I shed tears as I watch this documentary. Being a father, it is extremely painful to imagine that somebody can that my 15 year-old daughter just through this foolish African traditions... These traditions are long overdue and need strong Pan-African advocacy against. This is one main reason why most of Africa is underdeveloped.

If her mother dies and she is not married to a suitable man, it could also result trauma and disability, possibly even contracting HIV herself because she will not have any protection. These people seem to understand it is wrong or at least not ideal, but they see it as the lesser of two evils. The mother genuinely seems to want to protect her children. Not only does this give her one less mouth to feed, but it gives her means to feed her other children. This is compounded by the fact that she is likely a single mother, or will become one soon. Until you can provide another path out of poverty, treatment for HIV, access to maternal and general healthcare, and alteration of long, engrained, traditions, this will be an intractable problem. This is a multifaceted systemic issue, not about teaching people that marrying children is wrong. Age of consent isn’t a universal law handed down from on high, it’s one we as societies have decided for ourselves. Even in places where the law agrees with you, if culture and circumstance doesn’t agree, it will keep happening. This is an absolutely tragedy, but we shouldn’t be treating these people like they simply don’t know better. It’s a horrific decision they feel they are forced to make.

Her poor TERMINALLY ILL single mother wanted her daughter to have a husband to take care of her. It is easy to push school as some way out of poverty but unrealistic in a village like that, there isn't anything there and her poor family can't afford to send her somewhere to further her education. I'm Zambian but raised in the US. My mom always told me how my grandfather went against societal norms esp with raising his daughters. He made them go to school and such initiations were not a common place. It was harsh but he didn't let that influence him. And now his daughters are all educated and escaped all of this. No matter what, you can always break the cycle and create another one.

Zambian here. Sex with a minor is illegal and a criminal offense in Zambia. So yes technically it would be illegal marry a 14 year old. But the problem isn't necessary with the enforcement with a law. There is a loophole! Zambia has "dual" legal system where customary law is often applied side by side with written law. So as long as the man marries a child under customary (traditional) law he can get away with it.
One attempt to seal this loophole has been to prosecute perpetrators under a new education act which forbids the removal of a child from school in order to marry them off. But motivation for taking the girl out of school is difficult to prove. Many parents plead poverty and not marriage as the reason.
This makes me feel so sick. I can’t even describe the sadness and anger I feel for these children and women.
It happens alot in northern Nigeria trading thier daughters for money and food for men up to 40 yrs and above and yet still this girls get maltreated and beaten they don’t let them go to school only to bare children this happens in most of Africa mostly the northerners and Muslim

Fact of the matter is that culture is simply a word that means the collective behaviors and practices of a group, and culture can in fact be harmful, both to individuals or the society in general. Foot binding or corsets for example, are cultural practices that can cause physical harm and deformity. Criticizing culture isn't inherently a bad thing. Women in the west still wouldn't receive education if our societies didn't question that culture.

I am Zambian, and this is very sad, most girls live their lives for men in these rural areas, they do not have their own identity. when i was in grade seven most of my female classmates dropped out of school because they had reached puberty and had to be taught how to "please" their husbands and were later on married off.
Women are more than just a chores person, Wife and a Mother!! Women are Smart and can contribute to the advancement of the country. When you're told something since birth, and everyone around you believes and practices it, you will too. There will always be a few exceptions, but the majority of people believe what their culture/society tells them to believe. Especially in other societies where the focus is often more on community than individuality, which is the norm in a lot of Africa and Asia, as opposed to our very individual rights focused western culture.
I was so afraid to click on this video and now am utterly heartbroken seeing the 14 year old’s expression. I hope real change is coming and girls thrive through education giving them an escape from poverty and child marriages.

I am a Journalist from Zambia; this documentary must be old probably 7-8 years. Zambia has made tremendous progress in ending Child Marriages, particularly in Eastern Province where the Documentary was shot. The country now has a law in place, the Children´s Code Act, which speaks strongly to such issues and is effectively being implemented. Most rural communities are well sensitized and aware that child marriage is a crime, various interventions have also been put in place by stakeholders to keep girls in schools. It would nice if you could do a follow up documentary, otherwise good job on this one.
