As an African myself, it's heartbreaking to me what this girl is going through. She's literally just a year younger than me, and I've never even kissed a guy, let alone thought of being married to one at this age. You can clearly see how much passion she has for her education, even going as far as teaching younger kids at her school. I personally think that's beautiful and ambitious. All for her mother to ruin her future by selling her to this old pervert, for a cow. But personally, I could see where the woman is coming from sort of. The situation in that part of Zambia is so bad, that she thinks marrying her child off before she died would be the best way for her child to survive and thrive. While women and girls are struggling in these parts of the world, we have people like Dylan Mulvaney coming out with pathetic music videos illustrating what he pictures the life of a woman as, in his pathetic small mind.
I have to say, I do admire the people of this country, and other people, who are looking to totally abolish child marriage and give the female children here rights to their education. I really hope to be a part of this positive movement someday.

I’m not trying to minimize how heartbreaking of a situation this is, but it’s not just trading their daughter for a cow. Cattle in many third world countries can be the means to escape death by starvation for many families. Even having just one cow can make a life or death difference. It’s a very sad situation all around.

Her poor TERMINALLY ILL single mother wanted her daughter to have a husband to take care of her. It is easy to push school as some way out of poverty but unrealistic in a village like that, there isn't anything there and her poor family can't afford to send her somewhere to further her education. Having a husband provide for her was always her best option considering where she lives.

@@kpoppy9635 It may not be the families preference to do so but poverty is what drives them to do so. In this particular case the mother also wanted to ensure her daughter was provided for because she is dying from aids and a husband is the best way to ensure that.
I have watched the coverage of parents in the middle east doing the same just to afford firewood and food to feed the kids they have left. The people seeing this video will likely never know what it is like to be that impoverished but that is the reality for some people.

This has more to do with ignorance than tradition. The school girls in the class room stated they would rather stay in school than marry. If a small child knows this, why can’t the adults figure it out.

While I agree, that is a pretty simple take on a very complex issue. If her mother dies and she is not married to a suitable man, it could also result trauma and disability, possibly even contracting HIV herself because she will not have any protection. These people seem to understand it is wrong or at least not ideal, but they see it as the lesser of two evils. The mother genuinely seems to want to protect her children. Not only does this give her one less mouth to feed, but it gives her means to feed her other children. This is compounded by the fact that she is likely a single mother, or will become one soon. Until you can provide another path out of poverty, treatment for HIV, access to maternal and general healthcare, and alteration of long, engrained, traditions, this will be an intractable problem. This is a multifaceted systemic issue, not about teaching people that marrying children is wrong. Age of consent isn’t a universal law handed down from on high, it’s one we as societies have decided for ourselves. Even in places where the law agrees with you, if culture and circumstance doesn’t agree, it will keep happening. This is an absolutely tragedy, but we shouldn’t be treating these people like they simply don’t know better. It’s a horrific decision they feel they are forced to make.

Not everyone in Zambia has a straightforward education. Some children have to come out of school for a time to let a sibling learn.
But many countries have a system of educating adults. Often in the evenings when the days work is done.
Let's hope for the future and work where possible.

I'm Zambian but raised in the US. My mom always told me how my grandfather went against societal norms esp with raising his daughters. He made them go to school and such initiations were not a common place. It was harsh but he didn't let that influence him. And now his daughters are all educated and escaped all of this. No matter what, you can always break the cycle and create another one.
I live for VICE news and their documentaries seeing my country this way is heartbreaking.
I live in lusaka, and my girlfriend was also one of the lucky ones who was able to finish school. She's now working on her bachelor degree. But it's not uncommon today that girls do finish school. But few continue into higher learning, like bachelor or masters degrees.

As a Zambian, this is so shameful, and abhorrent. This problem needed to be fixed decades ago. While I understand the undoing of cultural practices is difficult, the ever-increasing rates of HIV should create more concern and action. More needs to be put in place to stop this practice.

The two children really wanted to get married I wish they spoke about the sexual promiscuity in that part of the country many other girls drop out of school because they want to this putting those who don't in hard position...

these stupid traditions never think of this. in trinidad, the age of marriage rose from 12 to 18 only a decade ago. the worst victim married an old man at 12, and he died. now she has 15 kids of varying ages to take care of, all depressed from being raised this way

My aunt was 15 when she married her 26yr old husband, unfortunately he died last month at age 78 and they were married for 50 something years. And have a very large family kids grandkids great grandkids.

Fact of the matter is that culture is simply a word that means the collective behaviors and practices of a group, and culture can in fact be harmful, both to individuals or the society in general. Foot binding or corsets for example, are cultural practices that can cause physical harm and deformity. Criticizing culture isn't inherently a bad thing. Women in the west still wouldn't receive education if our societies didn't question that culture.

Just replace "Santa Claus" with any religion, or even a philosophy like communism, and you'll see my point. When you're told something since birth, and everyone around you believes and practices it, you will too. There will always be a few exceptions, but the majority of people believe what their culture/society tells them to believe. Especially in other societies where the focus is often more on community than individuality, which is the norm in a lot of Africa and Asia, as opposed to our very individual rights focused western culture.

I am a Journalist from Zambia; this documentary must be old probably 7-8 years. Zambia has made tremendous progress in ending Child Marriages, particularly in Eastern Province where the Documentary was shot. The country now has a law in place, the Children´s Code Act, which speaks strongly to such issues and is effectively being implemented. Most rural communities are well sensitized and aware that child marriage is a crime, various interventions have also been put in place by stakeholders to keep girls in schools. It would nice if you could do a follow up documentary, otherwise good job on this one.
