- 101 East investigates how every year, tens of thousands of girls and women in India are trafficked into slave marriages.

Decades of sex selection favouring male babies have left some Indian states with vastly more men than women, creating a lucrative and growing market for traffickers.
In the patriarchal and feudal state of Haryana where there's a shortage of women to marry, it's normal for men to buy young girls trafficked from other states.
Known as "paros", a term implying they can be purchased, they are regularly raped, forced into marriages and made to work as bonded labour.
Their uneducated families are often tricked into agreeing to send them away, lured by the idea of a happy marriage for their daughters. But tragically, there is no "happily ever after".

the saddest thing was when sanjida said her father found her after 4 years and tried to take her back but as she was pregnant she couldn't return...so he stayed close by for 2 months to make sure they treated her well. The emotion in her voice when she talked about that broke my heart :(

My Punjabi Dad, almost 60, still believes women must only stay home and fetch for their husbands whatever they desire. And he works during the day so he has the mindset that he deserves being treated like a king at the end of a very tough day. This concept he was taught by his father and he passed on to his sons. My heart goes out to these unfortunate naive children who are trapped by the montrous traffickers..their parents are already poverty stricken and on top of that their children are stolen from them which aggravates their miseries..the plight of these young girls greatly depresses me..we have so much comfort and safety and yet we are always complaining rather than being grateful for whatever we have...It is in these remote parts of rural India that real development should take place...Getting detached from parents and that too at such a tender age is unbearable...what these girls go through can hardly be expressed in words.. How can human beings be so barbaric that they are selling off children..and what kind of mentality do these depraved buyers have? Women are to be respected and not seen as a commodity which can be bought and sold on a whim... Proper education and awareness can make them more alert and self-dependent...but these steps are easier said than done...we lack collective action to ward off such adversities...

Please don't shame the families... They live in a place where their dignity is solely judged based on women's marital status and the society that influences them... In most of the Indian rural community when a girl gets married she becomes a property of her husband, in suck kind of places if a girl runs away from her abusive husband, or if the family takes away their married daughter from her husband; both the girl and their whole family will be ridiculed and ostracized by their community.
So we should not just blame the family but the whole community as well.
You don't understand the culture. The "spoiled " woman might even be killed by neighbors if she returns home. Usually the families can't afford to feed their children either. Superstitious, uneducated, extremely impoverished people. Terrible. Heartbreaking.

I remember my grandma once told me that she was sold to my grandpa as she was 13 years old. It was kind of cultural shock to me. I thought such things happened back in the days when india got devided. Cant believe it still happens.
This happened to my great-grandmother too,my father told me this & I was super shocked. But,seeing this documentary and realising how these things still happens really lefts me speechless

I've met so many women like Sanjida while going around in Rural Haryana. So many poor people from my state of Assam are trafficked out of their homes. My heart breaks for women who have to go so much.
The lack of support,protection and empowerment amongst the women is heartbreaking...police asking for $700 to helpna woman get her child its disgusting. These people are monsters my heart breaks for these families.

@kalpana gupta you probably belong to a select privileged class which explains your views but the sad irony of india is while there are successful women like Kalpana Chawla (from Haryana as well) and even yourself, there are countless other women who have suffered or continue to suffer the plight. Next time you visit India go and see for yourself and you will realise how lucky you are and how your family empowered you as opposed to these souls. Its not even a question of poverty or lack of knowledge but a general mindset against women in some indian societies. And the ones documented here are not even a fraction of the real cases just like rape cases in India, most rape cases are not even registered or accounted for.
@kalpana gupta well maybe rape cases don't reflect society but the way society reacts to rape cases tells a lot like the hathras case and innumerable cases before and after where the authority and society just reacts in such an inhumane way that you're left wondering that WTF is wrong with people. Secondly I'm not talking about you being some rich brat to be counted as privileged, maybe i too belong to the same economic strata as you but even i consider myself to be lucky that my family was able to provide decent education and means, in a country where its hard to come by. For the little time I was in India, I grew up in a very safe area. My whole family are very educated people, the rural areas and trafficking are kept secret from the middle and higher ups to prevent any drama. It aches my heart knowing this is the India I never saw

When I was in India, I met a 16 year old girl whom married 34 year old man, pregnant, cooking, cleaning, washing, working around his house and taking care of his parents. That's only thing she'd be allow to do for the next 50 years. Can you imagine that?

Her mother would have gladly taken her back but if she left, she’d most likely never find another husband since her reputation would be ruined.... so she’s stuck with the one she has and if she seemed overly welcoming to her mother her husband and his family would be angry and likely punish her severely. She did what she had to to protect herself the best way she knew how.

my dads side of the family bullied my mom because she gave birth to two daughters. ppl would say horrible things to my mom and dad abt my sister and i just because there was no boy born. ppl in india sometimes will k!ll their daughters just because they didn’t have a boy, think girls are lower than boys, and think girls can’t do anything like boys can. it’s heartbreaking and disgusting how india treats women.

Hii I am an Indian women and request Alzazeera to make a documentary on my community. I belong to community called bunt and we have a matriarchial hierarchy. In my community women inherit every thing. If a family doesn't have a girl then there is no there is no bloodline. Even widow remarriage is allowed long before revolution took place in India to bring one post independence.

Documentaries like this are jarring to me. I come from a strong matriarchal family and was raised by my father to accept no bullshit and to have strong morals and values alongside the women in my family. I've ended relationships because the man cannot get through his head that I will be treated as nothing less than equal and have been happier for it. Knowing that this kind of thing happens in today's world is mind boggling.
