Child Marriage in India: Teenage Girls Forced to Marry
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 мар 2019
- Instead of focusing on their education, teenage girls in Malda, a border town in West Bengal, are focused on the fear of being forced to marry without their consent. VICE India host Makepeace Sitlhou meets schoolgirls, Priyanka, Ismoarah, Moushumi, and Masuda, to understand how they navigate through life in a society where the sole purpose of a girl's existence seems to be marriage.
Note: The name of the principal of Dalla High School is Jaydeb Lahiri.

Girls are treated as a burden

Just because the parents married young doesnt mean they should force their children to marry young too bruh

A good man/educator. I almost want to go and help him fight these pedos.
Not only girls, boys are also victim of child marriage.
Last year I met a boy which was probably in his mid 20's.He was forced to get married by their parents at the age of 14/15. From that age, he has been suffering from depression. He told me how he was unable to maintain a healthy relationship with his parents and family. Besides this he got cheated by his wife which made his life more painful.
Men are the disposable sex, no one will recognize their abuse.

Actually it's illegal to marry before 18 in India for girls but our system is very much corrupted and most of the under age marriage happens in villages basically cz they are orthodox/poor/they think girls are burden for them ....and even if someone will make a fir or will file a case police will not do anything instead they will ask money from the family to suppress the matter...😢

How can these mothers, who went through the same traumatic experience allow this especially WANT this for their daughters ??? Doesnt make ANY sense.
bblizzyy part of the problem for them would be that they would have to admit that their own circumstances were also not as the ideal they sell to others...
tradition, my man
Abuse is a sick cycle
It's a tradition if you not married in that age they would find problem in finding guy for her.this is how they basically think. They think they can live happily with a man at young age which is not true at all
bblizzyy because of tradition and it’s similar for countries like KSA too women have to endure abuse from a man who also has three other wives then their daughters go through the same thing
Do the parents not realize that doing this only adds to the poverty of their society?
14 year old girl gets married and has 2-4 babies and their husbands leave them and they are stuck to fend for themselves.
This is part of the reason why they are in poverty is because they are already poor and then making more and more babies in a poor environment.
They are just continuing the cycle of poverty, sadness, unhappy and unhealthy marriages and too many children.
If they let their daughters go to school and get degrees this helps break the cycle and they can make money on their own.
The more they are in school, the less babies they make, the smarter they become, the more chance they have at a good job and eventually having a happy marriage.
Well said
Sometimes traditions and crimes can make people really dumb, I mean what you said is so true, child marriage is a sin, but for something that has been done for many years suddenly was identified as wrong-doing is understandable but still I blame the guardians for not thinking straight, all they care about is money even for a short While all I can say is, BAN CHILD MARRIAGE, FREE ALL WOMEN AND WOMEN RIGHTS, ESTABLISH EQUALITY!!!!!

No, actually the boy who had a crush on her was making her family "lose face" in society since romantic love and choosing your own partner is taboo in India, so they married her off to someone else. She said her parents were also afraid of her running off with the boy, which makes me assume that she reciprocated those feeling but her parents didn't agree. Even teenage crushes are considered a threat to the traditional values of society, and having your parents choose your spouse is considered moral and respectable. (I'm Indian, so I know.) A simple answer points to the Indian caste system. There is an expression in India that “bringing up a daughter is like watering a neighbor’s plant.” India places women lower than men. There is a total and complete disrespect for women in Indian religious scriptures. The Mahabharata, Book 13 Section 40 (13.40), states, “There is no creature more sinful, than woman. She is poison, she is snake.” Other texts say that “Women are living lies.”

One- it’s arranged marriage u saw in the video, basically everything what westerners think an arranged marriage is.
2nd- its blind date on steroids where your family emotionally blackmail your in getting married to someone they think is perfect for u and you are given from few weeks to months to get to know eachother before you get married but you still gets ‘veto’ and then your family find someone else for u and whole process starts again.

When they legalised LGBT, it was only a matter of time before they'd legalised all other things. Not to mention that LGBT has never been considered normal in history (and still isn't in most countries), while this has been considered normal since the dawn of time and in every culture of all time.

"The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006" is the law which requires that both Girl & Boy should be above 21 to get married if not then the marriage is void and PARENTS as well As the Witnesses of such marriage will be punished.
And Child helpline 1098 is always available to help the who are being forced to marry.
Speaking as a girl from Bangladesh. Child marriage is truly a deep rooted problem. While girls in underdeveloped or rural areas wre forced into it by their families, you'll be surprised to know how many of them are groomed into marriage before turning an adult. This is a serious problem in the small towns. I live in a small town myself and have seen many of my juniors and classmates getting married already and their parents aren't the ones who've forced them into this. The thing is, in Islam, it's haram to do casual dating. Love marriage is most certainly allowed but under some rules such as - the girl and the boy should meet each other when there's a mehram (father, adult brother, immediate uncle and immediate grandfather) near them. They can talk, laugh, spend time for hours but they can't be physical with their love. Premarital s3x is also prohibited in Islam. So, when the parents find out about their teenage daughter dating, they ask her to break up which she doesn't do. In most cases, the boyfriends are adults and groom the girls into thinking they love them and then ask for their hand in marriage. These marriages fall apart quickly, once the men are fulfilled of gheir lustful desires.
this is a serious problem in many desi/southeast Asian countries child rape, sexual assault, abuse, trafficking, prostitution, arranged marriages, and terrible conditions and the government is so corrupt they don’t care for example the case of Zainab Ansari she was raped and killed and many more victims and what did the police do they just sat there saying “oh well we don’t give a fuck”And the culture plays a big role too. Southeast Asian countries tend to typically force marries, shrug off sexual abuse and rape saying “oh she should’ve covered up” or oh “she just wants attention” it’s so sick . Thank god In This modern day and age there are documentary’s and activists bringing awareness to these terrible things I pray to god that every girl that got sexually abused or raped that they get justice and for all the trafficked ,killed, and so much more. And many pepole blame Islam when this is punishable by the death penalty in Islamic law Its FORBIDDEN to have sex before marriage to rape sexually abuse and force anyone to Marry. a woman in Islam can KILL her rapist with no punishments by Islamic laws start blaming the sick pepole not the religion .

I'm 24 yo and still mentally not ready for the marriage. Can't imagine at the very young age, they're forced to married some 'stranger'. It's a crime.
I lived near Malda for a while. while I lived there, I had some friends who were about 13-14. They don’t know their ages. At that age they were ready to be married. One time, a friend almost got married at 12, but it wasn’t even a marriage, her family was unwittingly selling her into prostitution. We managed to save her, but a year later another girl, who was very close to me was married and we could do nothing. Now she has 2 children and she is 16. All my friends asked me When I was going to marry, I was about 12. I said that I would wait until I found the right man and I had gone through school. This concept was so far fetched to them. I now almost all my friends who are now 15-16 are married with children. They are about 10 years younger than her husband. I hate this, it breaks my heart
Do u have prob with that tho?
@@iiiezra oh yes! I hate it. That's part of the reason I lived there. To help stop illegal marriages and child trafficking
That honestly sounds terrifying. I hope you get the opportunity to keep with school and even go to college. Marriage can wait a long time. And some of us are very happy being single. I’m a single woman and bought my own house. I love it. I watch my niece often and my mom, sister and I go take walks together because I purposely bought a house close to my sister. Plus there’s always the option of meeting someone and getting married if you want. Most of the ppl I know got married in mid to late twenties or early 30s. I honestly don’t know anyone who married as a teenager. I’m from US, and that’s my experience here. Anyways just trying to say please don’t ever buy into the you’re too old thing if that happens because that’s not true. They’ll be nice guys to meet when you’re out of school. And if they really love you they will wait for you.

I live in west bengal too. In my town child marriage is very rare but I remember when I went on a trip to Birbhum near Malda, the villagers were giving proposals of my marriage and I was only 13.
I have a friend who is much older, he is from Turkey.
He and his wife were forcibly married when they were 11 years old.
He told me how they would walk hand-in-hand to school together as a married couple.
At least both of them were of the same age and they were (and still are) best friends.
EDIT: WOAHHH 2 years later, over 3K likes on my comment, and only now am I notified!!
To answer some questions: Mustafa (Mu-Mus) and his wife are in their mid 70s. They come from VERY rural Turkey, and their union basically solidified a fruitful deal, as now they own a gigantic piece of prized land, which has secured financially both of their families completely.
Although they are indeed Muslims like me, it's their CULTURE that joined them together, it is NOT a religious thing whatsoever. As for the notion of 'force'... a lot of y'all (presumably Western folks) don't seem to understand the mere WEIGHT of your family's opinion on everything you do, for most people in the Middle East and Orient.
A lot of y'all also have failed to think about the fact that the romantic love people so desperately seek today, is a very recent phenomenon... and a not very effective one.

Don't be ashamed. You can't blame an entire nation of crores of population for a cult or some people who following such practices.
As the economy raises, so does the desires to do these practices.
The problem isn't CHILD marriage because the horror stories these 15 y.o. children recounted could very well happen to an 18 y.o. person. And they do happen, in many families outside of India as well. The problems are much deeper, and the so-called child marriage is just the surface manifestation. The problems lie with how people (parents) literally own other people (children) and think it right to coerce them. And how people (children in this case but also women) depend financially and emotionally on other people (parents, husbands, …). Not to mention the surreal amount of psychological, verbal and physical abuse that goes with it. Do not think raising the age to 18 or 21 or 77 will change much.

How are these parents okay with making their 15 year old daughters marry 25 + year old men. If your so worried about not being able to afford their expenses, than at least give them the option to continue their education until possible and help with the money. Marring off her to a family that’s only going to treat her like a peasant is NOT A FREAKING SOLUTION.

No it is not.
