  • India is home to Bollywood, the world's most prolific movie industry. For those who dream of stardom, landing a leading role may depend on the color of your skin. India's preference for fair skin has given rise to a skin-lightening industry worth nearly $500 million dollars.
    VICE's Gianna Toboni heads to Mumbai to find out how this cultural bias is fueling the booming business of fairer skin.

    The actress said "Thank you" at 5:40 when the reporter called her "very fair". It verifies how fair skin is considered better or that being fair is something to be proud of. Colorism is prevalent in Indian society and it's gonna take a long time to change people's mindset.

      @khazms Год назад +5

      True. I've experienced this in another way. My mom is very fair skinned despite being brown, like she's almost pale.. and I also inherited that, but not as pale.
      People would always tell me I look like my mom, that I was beautiful, pretty, etc. Personally, I don't look like her at all, I look more like my father if anything.
      But when my sister was born (different father), she was born dark skinned.. I was around 8 or 9, so I remember how people kept talking about how dark skinned she was.
      Whenever we were at relatives or gatherings, people would always make that comparison, they would say I looked like my mom and then for my sister they would talk about her skin.
      Nobody has ever said that my sister looked like anyone in our family. But my mom legitimately looked exactly like her when she was young. So.. why?
      And I realized because were being prejudiced and discriminatory, just because of her skin color despite being family/relatives. It's messed up and sad.

In cantral Africa and India, the more you approach the so-called Equator line, the more people are darker. It shows exactly why we have such a gift, but I always hate or sometime wonder why do people not embrace these differences as a matter of fact a kinda force of self-defense towards place, adaptation rooted from evolution of humankind. Melanin as also very protective and reduces the damage to skin and even DNA deeper in your body from radiation. You can compare how much more youthful very dark skinned people appear to very fair people when they reach middle age and older, and in the US where people live in the same area the difference is very apparent. *No skin color is better than another*, but if people developed a preference it would be more logical for it to be darker skin since we would look youthful for longer. There is of course the benefit of fair skin absorbing vitamin D better, but this can be supplemented in the diet. I just wish people everywhere were allowed to feel comfortable in their own skin instead of having fairness arbitrarily held as ideal in so many places around the world

      where does your sense of worth come from? thats a good question to ask yourself, so that you can learn to love yourself.
      When you learn how precious you are, not only in regards to appearance but your character, no one can be you... even someone who has the same parents with the same upbringing can never be the same. You are alone and God made you that way, well knowing what He was doing. he didn't make you and go like "oops!" he knew you before you were born and loved you.
      "Before I formed you in the belly I knew you, and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you"
      It's not easy to ignore the beauty standard. not just that even intelligence or prestigious jobs and money and class. But the knowledge that I am known and loved by someone so great lifts my head high. There is a reason He made you, in your family, no matter what it looks like, in your nation, no matter where, and with your face and skin and height and voice and hair.
      It's never to early to find out what that purpose is.
      "Come to me all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am humble and gentle, and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." - Jesus

    I met two very light Indians the other day - so light that they were one step away from whyte! The lighter ones are almost always cool, while the darker ones always have the problems with other blaks. I take it, it is because they are trying to run away from their blakness - not back TO it. It's the same with hispanics and so-called arabs too.

In middle school when there were more people of my race and background I remembered during gym a group of us aligned our arms to compare. I was the lightest. I remember feeling pleased bc it was like I had proof to my siblings that I wasn’t dark like what they thought. I guess I just didn’t like feeling different from them after all. But I had my many struggles with this. I’ve always been told I didn’t look like my four other siblings. I had darker hair, curly hair, taller, (but not actually. My grandmother was an extremely fair skinned Indian woman and I considered my family to be a pretty progressive family. She went on to marry my grandpa who was a tall, dark and a handsome man.
    So when she happened to tell me (a dark skinned woman) that she likes my sister better because she was fair, i was taken aback. And this happened just about a year ago.
    I then started connecting the dots and saw a pattern - when I was younger and given lesser candy than my fairer American cousins, i was looked down upon. When I was given lesser affection than my fairer skinned sister, I was also looked down upon. I realized that it doesn't matter whether you come from the richest or the poorest household, you're still discriminated against in your own family in minute ways which mentally torment you, silently.
    Luckily enough, my mum wouldn't pay heed to this 'fair skin obsession' and abolished the same within our home. For that, I am so grateful.

      1. people literally "look up to you," and they automatically "look up" to tall people for leadership or authority;
      2. women undeniably prefer to be with a taller man--both short men and very tall women have difficulty finding partners for this reason;
      3. tall people tend to earn significantly more than those less tall--totally net worth increasing with each inch of height above 6'0";
      4. tall people, statistically, have more children--primarily due to second marriages that result in more children, with a different women, further diversifying and enhancing the transmission of their genes into the future;
      5. "Is He Actually Cute, or Just Tall and White?" is real question some women ask themselves reductress.com/post/quiz-is-he-cute-or-is-he-just-tall-and-white/
      6. tall people have a at least any chance at all of playing professional sports--short people don't have much of a chance in professional sports, obviously...;
      7. tall men are favored in combat sports--to the point that weight classes are instituted--as they have the ability to put on more muscle mass and have greater reach, making tall people inherently more physically dominant, and for most of human history "might meant right." Ambient intimidation has its benefits.
      [Mike Tyson is the sole outlier....]
      8. tall people are admired for being tall, having never done anything to become tall, other than existing... so much for learning an art form or impressive skill...
      9. tall people walk around in a bubble of the above "privileges" unaware that they are buoyed by society;
      10. I have a personal grudge, because I usually lose out to the taller man when it comes to dating...
      [I think that with increased height, there is an assumed increase in size of every member of the person's body....]
      SO, if I want those advantages for my descendants, I should impose artificial selection upon myself, and ought to marry an Amazon--like Brigitte Nielsen--or some kind of alien-anomaly--like Karlie Kloss, or a WNBA star who is desperate enough, and has no other choice of man available on earth...
