Stall is fun. Fun to play and especially fun to smash. You've got to be a lot more methodical than with offense, mostly because your team of one or two breakers needs to handle six walls, with at least one of them serving as a hard counter. To win, you need to be applying as much pressure on anything that can take a hit from a breaker. Heatran spamming Lava Plume, sacrificing Greninja to get up spikes and other plays may seem like bad decisions, but the burns, chip and hazard damage go a long way in weakening the opponent's team even if nothing faints. It's very, very easy to overextend against stall, that risky play may seem great, but if your breaker gets burned by scald or takes too much chip to be able to come back in, it's game over, even if you managed to get a KO or two. Conditioning, safe reads, spreading damage and patience is how you beat stall, and if a sweep attempt isn't working, call it off! Had I stayed in on Quagsire after Zen Headbutt missed, I could've eaten a 30% scald burn that would've ended the game then and there. The safe option, bring in Tapu Fini to set up status-blocking Misty Terrain, and then the much bulkier Golisopod to take one and recover with banded Leech Life ultimately preserved Medicham and got some decent damage off that was instrumental for taking down Quagsire later, instead of maybe doing some damage now, guarantee the win later.

most HO vs HO or HO vs balance are all about those moment to moment plays, that one turn that turns it all on its head. this trains you perfectly to lose against stall, where it’s all about pressuring your opponent consistently- but not too much that you lose someone important- but not too little that your Pokémon are starved for hp- JUST enough, for 30-150 turns.

I come here everytime I lose to stall, just to release pressure watching stall getting ass-slapped.
I hate how over the generations stall went from "wear you opponent down with hazards status and chip while using you type advatage for reads" (basically an aggro team that kills quick, but uses things that AREN'T attacks to do so) to "prevent your opponent from getting anything done for as long as possible and only try to do any damage when you are COMPLETELY SURE you wont be punished" (pp stall first, actually ENDING THE GAME second). Not to mention the fact that while they were almost always a part of SOME of these teams, chansey/blissey + invincible-phys-wall cores have become the norm (I.E. They dont care about typing, just if a move is physical or special). I mean, WHY do you have spore on your amoongus if you cant take advantage of it by setting up hazzards, boosts OR damage? It just stops you from landing toxics on that pokemon to ACTUALLY KILL THEM. I mostly blame it on defog, just brainlessly removing hazzards, which both made hazzard based gameplay nigh impossible for slower teams and gave people a way of simply removing an opponents damage source inadvertantly BUFFING this kind of play! Like, how cool it would be if stall relied on predicting hazzards correctly and bouncing them with a sableye switch rather than just defoging every other turn and using magic bounce as nothing more than a "get out of toxic free card". But thats just my opinion as an ex-stall player/main who liked when stall could end games in

@@vdd1001 modest magma Storm heatran can 2hko mega sableye, but it's not very reliable because of low PP and accuracy and it's a low chance to Ko without any prior chip damage. Magma Storm z move heatran will destroy mega Sabeleye, but since it's a ghost type it can switch out of the trap. @@dragicmagic9870 I didn't say anything about heatran dropping sableye, I just said taunt isn't always an option if there's a mega sableye. But yeah heatran has the most positive matchup against stall because clefable, blissey and pex can't 1v1 it if it connects magma storm

Stuff like this is why dracovish is my favorite Pokemon, that team would've gotten ripped apart. Stall is heavily underappreciated.
There's way too many players that have absolutely no patience and talk bad about stall just because they have no clue on how to beat it.
Playing versus stall will truly test just how well you can play the game. It's all about having patience, and not just haphazardly pressing damage buttons.
Your description shows that some people out there understand that playing against stall isn't just a waiting game, and that you can definitely beat it with some good plays.
Your plays were sick and demonstrated you had the knowledge and patience avaliable to you to beat stall.
I play stall all the time, and there's a lot of things regular players might think is bad, such as me staying in on tapu fini as Mega Sableye just to get a knock off on it. But, getting rid of a Tapu Finis leftover is hugely important in dealing with it as a stall player.
People just dont appreciate some good stall.
Stall v stall is the worst though.
Seeing stall destroying a toxic players, or some crazy offense destroying stall with some nuclear plays is what makes the play style most interesting for me
Not wanting to spend more than 100s of turns is not “being to impatient”. It’s ridiculous. It’s the same exact type of play style and it’s suffocating if you don’t have that certain specific sets to deal with. There’s nothing underrated about it. Damn near anyone and their mother run it just to get an easy win and to completely waste your time. That lack of earth power from both parties was ridiculous. What’s remotely strategic about wasting pp and clicking useless moves over and over again?

“He played well” man had so many chances to fuck ur Cham with sableye. it’s always the best switch but they never did
Actual high-level stall player here. This guy in the vid, in addition to the above critique by Ethan, didn't preserve his zaps, he let gren get up spikes and allowed rocks-if any stall player lets you get up your hazards, they deserve to lose-didn't keep his medi counters at full health, and took way too long to realize the goli was banded (know your freaking calcs man!). Pressure my ass. There were so many free pit stop heals he could've managed during the heatran section, and he just blundered them away…
Much of what it takes to play stall well is knowing when you can sneak in a heal for that blunder you made earlier. Otherwise you'll never last. That and you need to whisper to yourself, repeatedly during the match, "I am cancer. I am cancer. I can just keep recovering…I'm making progress…eventually they'll die." I didn't see that kind of patience from this player.
Still, this stall player was half-decent at least.
What a game

4:28 Why is the opposing Heatran switching? It is behind a sub, so it is not immediately threatened by the Golisopod. It could use Magma Storm and see which move the Golisopod is locking itself on (the opponent probably knows it is choice banded at this point). I think I’m missing something though.
waste of pp he magma storms once wasting a magma storm just for golisopod to survive then gets a free waterfall on the switch regardless
You restore hopes that hyper offensive team can also destroy staller team.
Best way to beat stall is to outstall them
Fuck man, that hurt my soul.

As someone who's totally outside of competitive Pokemon, what was the win condition for that stall team? Stealth rocks killing the opponent? Or the opponent forfeiting?
Attrition, usually through stealth rocks, burning the physical sweepers, poisoning the bulkier Pokémon and generally "not losing". Stall teams usually have something that can wall everything on an opposing team, they win by outplaying the opponent and denying as much momentum as possible. Ash-Greninja can sweep a team but if you switch into Amoongus on it five or six times then it's out of hydro pumps. Likewise, if Mega Medicham takes a burn or takes 50% by missing a HJK you're now risking a loss.
Basically, the stall player's goal is to get the offense player to use up all their resources, a lot of times, forfeits are often because a player just lost their wincon, they might not lose until forty turns in but the loss is guaranteed.
@@kierany9 Thanks so much for the explanation ^_^ It actually sounds like the kind of strategy I enjoy: playing tanks or otherwise disrupting an enemy's strategy is very enjoyable. That being said, is it a respectable playstyle? Or do stall players get a lot of shit?
@@ZekeGenter You'll absolutely get a lot of shit on the ladder but it's legit in the sense that at high level it's considered fair. Although one thing is that stall takes a lot longer to play due to the sheer number of turns, and if you take 30 seconds per turn because you don't know what you're doing then that's just poor sportsmanship.
