- apparently 200 SpDef puts you in PU now
and people still can't handle it in OU
Regice was hands down the coolest (shit this wasn't supposed to be a pun) of the regi trio, or at least that's what 10 year old me thought. While looking for a special wall for this horrible stall team, I found this bad boy sitting at 200 base SpDef, and a decent HP stat, and it actually did its job. Unless a low-tier 'mon is infamous for being a noob trap (Regigigas, Slaking, etc), has okay base stats and isn't a 100% inferior version of an OU 'mon, I believe it can work in OU. Even if it is just for a laugh

@@lesargames7110 it’s hilarious seeing something like lando chomp or glisgor come in only to drop to an ice beam. Serene grace charge beam actually allows it to become a threat of you can get it set up against a special attacker. And any non ground type switch risks a 60% paralysis off of thunder. I’ve been flipping between tri attack and shadow ball in the last slot, both are solid

How the hell was regice ever in PU, its practically Chansey
weak to stealth rock and about half the metagame, also absolutely zero recovery outside of rest which is kinda meh.
kierany9 yeah but its still crazy that it went all the way down to PU, there are much worse mons than Regice in higher tiers
An Ice type would need to have 200 in every stat and a good movepool to be good in every OU. Ice is that much of a nerf.

Ik im late and this is kinda naggy, but wouldnt you get both more physical and special bulk with the evs in hp as regice rather than spdef, even with a +spdef nature? If im wrong please correct me, I just think that this neat strat could be refined a bit if im not mistaken.

@@kierany9 how'd you figure out the probability of freeze after 16 turns? I'm kinda struggling with probability stuff in math but putting it in terms of pokemon kinda helps. Also, nice video 👍
@@neerajjoshi8395 Freeze is a 10% chance, which can be expressed as a probability 0.1 (where 0 is no chance and 1 is 100% chance). As a result, the chance to not get a freeze is 0.9. To calculate a chance of something happening after something else, you multiply the probabilities. So if you toss a coin (50% for either side, so 0.5), to get heads twice is 50% of 50%, or 0.5(get heads on throw 1)*0.5(get heads on throw 2). So to calculate the odds of the same thing happening X times in a row, you would have to multiply the odds by themselves X times (prob^X). So to calculate the odds of not getting a freeze after 16 ice beams, it would be 0.9^16. This ends up as 0.1something probabiity of NOT getting frozen after 16 turns. To calculate the probability of getting frozen, just calc the inverse of it (1-prob) and that's the 81% chance.
This is a massive oversimplification but I hope it helped.

i heard that a lot of people used it with thunder in gen 3, so i figured i'd use this on a rain team. worked pretty well.
You know, Regice is one of my favourites in general. I just love that base 200 spdef since alot of pokemon rely on special moves, like, in my experience even on showdown you find alot more special attackers than physical attackers, so whether you invest in spdef evs or not this thing will tank HARD regardless, and it's spatk is not actually terrible so it will do good damage especially if you use charge beam or something like ancient power on it and get a potential boost.

Also maybe it's just me, but I have trouble getting past 1400 elo for some reason. I kinda know why and it's hard to de-learn or so to speak. Like, I overpredict, to the point where I think something is completely logical to do and I expect said person to do it, only for it to just be a classical noob strat in which ''buttons go brrrr'' making me lose unneccessarily often. Is there anyway to immediately figure out within like 5 turns whether someone is an actually good player, or just a noob copying someone's team and think it just works if they only press the same button and switch once or twice?
there's no way to read your opponent in five turns, but if you want to stop losing due to overprediction, learn to recognize how risky your predictions are and make more midground plays that don't rely on predictions to be decent. by midground i mean moves that have very little risk and cover a lot of your opponent's options, even if the advantage you get isn't that big. if a midground goes wrong, you might lose some momentum or take 20% chip whereas if a hard read goes wrong, as you mentioned, you lose "because your opponent was bad".
predicting doesn't make you good, but relying on your predictions only when you need to can help you win. one time i was up against a 1500 player who would not stop making reads, i'm talking like every other turn was some wild read. they kept on giving him these really short-term advantages that only really made me switch around and take minor damage while i played super safely, getting some chip here, some hazards there. 30 turns in and we're more or less even but since i know this guy knows i'm playing safe and i know he's super reckless, i can make one read to get volcarona set up safely which ended in a 6-0.
likewise, i lost against some super high ladder guy once, like 1800-1900 elo, because he just consistently outplayed me, no matter what i did his moves were just better. he took almost no risk but he pushed his advantage as hard as he could with relatively safe options and i just couldn't handle it. dude was so solid that no amount of risky moves would've beaten him, only solid play aka better long-term planning and win-condition recognition would've let me win.
not saying that prediction is bad tho, sometimes you'll be forced you to make reads whether it be because of the matchup (usually because someone is running HO), it's an endgame and you both have very few options, or you're in a losing position, feel free to YOLO it in those cases. but usually people predict by going "my opponent is definitely going to do this so i will make the perefct countermove" instead of "my opponent will probably do this so i'll try and counter it while not leaving myself horribly out of position if they do that or that or that".

Thanks bro, guess I'll just have to calm down and try to make some laxer plays sometimes instead of "If I switch now to groudon and he'll use thunderbolt instead of grass knot I could get the upperhand, but if I could expect that he would know I'm going for the groudon to prevent a tbolt and instead go to charizard to nullify the grass knot completely I'll be equally as good of a position" only for the dude to like setup or go for a completely different move that counters both mons (hypothetically) and I'd still get fcked since his thought process was way simpler..
That lando was choice band and defog
Scarf Defog is pretty normal so I can kinda see why you'd put Defog on Band if you really can't fit the move anywhere else. Lando forces a lot of switches so it's not the _worst_ set he could've used.
I still dont get why Regice, Regirock and Registeel don't have a "Raises the power of Ice, Rock, Steel moves" ability, as Regieleki and Regidrago.
They are all regis! Why tf not?!
(And why Regigigas doesn't have a better/broken ability that makes him justice, but that's another story)
That would definitely make sense, but when Regice, Regirock, and Registeel got their abilities, Regieleki and Regidrago didn’t exist yet. They may have thought they would only make the original 3 Regis + Regigiggas, so they didn’t think to make a kind of consistent “STAB boost” ability for them. Also, yes, Regigiggas should have a better ability, or at least one that doesn’t have a negative effect.
