I think the worst smogon tournament experience I had was in gen 6 XY OU. It was the Semi-final round a standard OU tournament. Not a big event by any means but it was my first tournament ever and sadly my last. I had a balanced semi defensive team centered around mega venusaur and umbreon. But I cant remember the rest of my team, other than it had u-turn and voltswitch for momentum and a scarf cleaner. My opponent was running an aegislash before his ban. He had the swords dance shadow sneak set. The opponent tried to set up swords dance in my mega venusaur but I knew how rampant aegislash was and specific EV'd him to be able to take even a +6 shadow sneak after leach seed, protect and synthesis if necessary to stall it out or force a switch. The mods watching the tournament at the time, saw my opponent set up a +6 and looked at my team and assumed it was over. I ended up winning the semi finals thanks to mega vensaur chipping away at his team with leech seed and momentum moves enough for my scarfer to clean up. But my opponent had already told the mods that he won and was placed in the finals shortly after. I was left confused and wondering when my finals round was going to be. When I asked the mods they told me that I had lost the battle, so why would I be in the finals. I had to make them watch the rest of the replay of my semi final match just to prove that I did indeed come out on top. All the while the "finals" where taking place behind me. They where shocked and surprised, but they did correct the mistake with an apology shortly after though. They also called off the current final match that was well under way. But the damage was done. Maybe you could make a video, where you explain the difference between a Pokémon being OU, having a significant niche and minor niche in the tier. Since not every mon that you need to team build with or around is placed in the tier, where it sees use It’s a thing that many mediocre players struggle with and recognizing that tier placement doesn’t mean a mon isn’t relevant for a higher tier. I would argue that this is the biggest barrier between a mediocre and good competitive Pokémon player and would love to see a video on it.
Reminds me of how in gen 7 one of the mons people kept the most in mind when building a team was Reuniclus despite being officially RU, because it was a devastating late game cleaner that could easily snowball and become unstoppable if your team wasn't prepared for it. It wasn't the only example of course and the BL alone had some you needed to keep in mind like Mega Gallade (M-Medicham was overall more consistent due to the immediate power, but M-Gallade was a more potent game ender due to it's higher speed (outspeeding Garchomp and Kartana is huge), SD (after a SD it's attack was ....... it was) and a good special bulk. And bear in mind, M-Gallade was just ONE of the BL (one of the better one though true) but the BL list in gen 7 was massive and you generally needed to keep them in the back of your mind, if you didn't and thought "what's Mega Heracross gonna do ?" without preparing for it you'd just see Heracross come in and take a kill every time causing your team to get dismantled.
