  • I've got issues with Tyla. Particularly Tyla's team and even Tyla the popstar herself. I feel like in her efforts to be a huge western popstar, Tyla is exploiting whatever demo she can claim to get there.

Trust me, we understand the video. *Tyra Banks voice* Learn something from this! You also giving Tyla "engagement" by making this video that's doing nothing but bringing more attention to her that is ultimately going to end in positivity. @@Ibeenflewshe is bring her culture to the world is maybe a reach... I'm South African, "black", and i have definitely felt the pressure to ensure that whenever I make any Amapiano music that I represent my people through it. Tyla has definitely felt that pressure too and unlike me who's cultural background would probably be consider "blacker", tyla unfortunately in south africa is just simply not "black enough" to be considered actually black (this mentality I should mentioned is I believe ingrained in us by Apartheid before it's reign fell apart) in south africa... And the culture dynamics, differences, nuances between South African "Blacks and Coloureds" are very different but somewhat had a common antagonist(abelungu aka "white people") just like one would have a house nigga and a field nigga in America I think🤔 . Tyla is very much aware of that, if you ask me, she does try to be respectful towards Amapiano. But this whole thing is also all so complicated, because technically Amapiano is a genre blend of music from different parts of the world all over, Amapiano if you ask me, is more multiracial than Tyla. Even though the creators, developers, crafter(s), the people who made, came up, put together Amapiano are very, very black indeed. And Amapiano is also symbolic of how unlike "white people" who have a very well documented history of being weird, acting weird, moving funny when they see/notice something of value, "black people", Africans are that bigger person who's willing to be inclusive.... 😅This needs an entire sit down and talk.

    I think you just don't know South African's cause most of your critique about her persona is very much a South African coloured girlie. The ones who know, know. People need to leave her alone cause at least at home she's loved and she's generally represented a different part of our South African culture well. We're literally the Rainbow Nation so comparing us to West African artists doesn't make sense.

      I agree with you about her persona being just herself and very South African, especially it’s OP’s critique about referencing SA in this gimmicky light. We do dance on tables, and are piss drunk, it’s not a lie. We know ourselves.
      Then again I see and somewhat agree with the points that Tyla’s existence might result in a not so pleasant long term consequence for other African artists. 1. It might not be Tyla herself but her management will take the “African” girl aesthetic and run with it. You know the whole fetishisation with Africa, cough “the motherland” troupe. 2. Tyla is a coloured girl, and in our land, she is a whole different identity as opposed to other African artists who are, excuse my language, full black(of course this may be relative, but my point is about being black presenting), and with the colourism landscape in America and the western work in general, she will be taken as the representation of black they see her as such. They see her as black, and therefore can quench their thirst of “we want black representation” albeit in more palatable skin tone, figure and body feautures(pretty much an ideal beauty standard - a “black” person who looks European according to their beauty standards) and the “African trump card. uGirl is literally in the best position imo to profit of off that. It will work for her but fvck the rest of a bo Ary Starr, Rema etc. who might get discarded because, like I said, now there is more preferred* artist, will everything the western media wants

    What's wrong with being an opportunist? That's how you become successful. Especially in an industry like this. It's always going to be about playing to your strengths, the gaps in the market, and what the audience wants. Ayra Starr is more that African pop star you're looking for.

    • @Ibeenflew
      @Ibeenflew 3 месяца назад +1

      And I think Ayra should have been on Tyla's album that would have made more sense. Ayra already makes more dance party music so it would have been huge. The song with Tems is forgettable.

    • @Ibeenflew
      @Ibeenflew 3 месяца назад +5

      I think in general you are making some valid points but you have to remember this is the nature of the industry. It's not really the place for uncurated "authenticity". Whatever you are is going to be played up x100 that's how you brand yourself! I think there is a bit of hateration going on. "she's just doing too much" like that statement in itself is problematic bc why should she play smaller bc you believe so? She's doing a great job to get the results that she wants at the end of the day. You are expecting perfection and it's weird! She gotta be "down for the culture" why? These african male artists are colorist af!! Even Tems, what has she done to bring people adoration towards Africa or black people besides simply make afrobeat adjacent music? I feel she is being picked apart because she is a threat and has a bright future. I'm all for criticism but I can't say you're being entirely fair.

    • @Ibeenflew
      @Ibeenflew 3 месяца назад +6

      Lastly, I just looked on your page to see if you have done a video on Ayra to highlight her and it looks like you haven't. This is why I said I sense some old fashion hating is this video! Because you don't like the way Tyla is simply existing in her own gifts and doing what she is called to do yet there are artists out here doing and being EXACTLY what you want out of Tyla and you haven't made a 20 minute long video highlighting all the ways they are getting it right. If you spent more time talking about what you do like instead of what you don't, you'll see the right things start to rise. But videos like this only add to Tyla's star rising. Controversy is a much needed ingredient in making a generational icon which Tyla is on her way to being.

I swear we gonna have a flock of South African artists in mainstream. Same like Burna Boy did for Nigeria she is that for South Africans . It’s just unfortunate that she doesn’t look or sound like Nigeria or how AFRICANS SHOULD SOUND. But that in itself is a stereotypical thing that she’s breaking. There’s so much of us who look talk and act like her and should be validated as Africans too. It’s not fair that just because you’re darker skin you’re supposed to be more African or pure breed. I don’t think the American audience is backing her as much as the South African audience is. Because even when I made a video and had her picture in my video I attracted a lot of people from South Africa even tho I have a mainly U.S. & UK/Australian Audience and never had them interact with my content previously. This is the beginning stages of Tyla’s career but as far as I’ve seen her target market (African Americans)aren’t really rocking w/her on social media anyways. Which I think is due to the controversy and what you stated about the culture vulture statements in the video. And be it the breakfast club interview happed around the same time the “Not Like Us” video dropped black American people are hyper aware right now when it comes to culture vultures or as Kendrick Lamar calls them “colonizers”. I was really taken back at the Tyla hate because I really like her I think she brings a certain element we have been missing for a while now. So when I heard of the culture vulture criticism, arrogant behavior and the industry plant stuff I was conflicted. And now that I’ve seen this video and others like it, I sadly see there may be some truth to what your saying. It really hit home when I heard the back story on how she came TYLA with the whole manger thing and Sho Madjozi. Idk there is definitely something going on with Tyla and her branding/marketing but Tyla is very talented and I do enjoy her music. I also think her label might be using her.

    With all due respect, my view is that, women who are biracial, or multiracial are not BLACK. I have never,and will not, subscribe to the one drop rule. Therefore, I do not view Tyla as Black. Before any one comes for me, I have children who are mixed race, who have a white father. They are not Black.
    I love Tyla, I genuinely think she is her generations “Beyonce”. Is Tyla comfortable in black American spaces? Not sure as I don’t know her. I do know that she is on the record as saying she doesn’t like swear words in music (that is basically, a lot of rnb and hip hop music). Additionally, she clearly was around black people growing ie in school and socially. However, America is very different to South Africa.
    The race issue is always a thorny issue, people have different viewpoints and experiences( can you imagine if Tyla were to date a white or non black man?! Sheesh, the hate would be disgusting).Ultimately Tyla is an artist and has ambitions to be incredibly successful. In order to achieve this Tyla is working with people who can get her to that level. In the process, there are things that Tyla will need to do and say, so I guess it is playing the game.

      Yeah honestly I feel like a lot of women who have an issue with light skin black women are honestly insecure
      This is because there has not been one artist that has come out and is not attacked by black Americans for being "colourist"
      And I say this because you as an individual do not choose what you want to benefit from. opportunities come to you especially if you work hard

    I mean, her not ACTUALLY caring about the diaspora and uplifting African culture, is expected 😂 That’s WHY she’s in the position she is! I do think if she completely diverts from the Afro sound kinda like Rihanna did when she went from the Caribbean sound to GGGD, it won’t be good for her just because of the times we’re in so she’ll continue to pander until she gets the same treatment as Burna Boy…

    • @MJ31579
      @MJ31579 3 месяца назад +8

      She talks about South African culture all the time. She collaborates with artists from Africa and the diaspora all the time. She refers people back to South African culture and dances all the time. 😅 What are you even saying.

    • @niablee
      @niablee 3 месяца назад +3

      @@MJ31579 You’re not getting it… she only references those things FOR HER and not about others which is exactly what this video states she’s an opportunist. Plus, she’s supposed to do all of that in the beginning because that’s how they want to market her but she’s clearly the American-palatable version which is why she’s as big as she is…

    • @parasocialfanatic
      @parasocialfanatic 3 месяца назад +3

      This the same thing that Rihanna did. Her first album was her home country sound, her second album was rnb pop. I have never heard of another artist from Barbados after her rise. She never put anybody on, she did it on her first album just for collabs. Kinda what Tyla did, she only put Kelvin momo.

    • @MJ31579
      @MJ31579 3 месяца назад +5

      @niablee no. Her being palatable for America is a comment on America and why they find her more appealing than the many African artists that exists.
      Her skin tone, weight, look, sound is all what Americans want to see, there are many other artists available for you to listen to.
      Why complain about a mixed race girl representing if all the famous artists look like Beyonce, Rihanna, Aliyah, Doja Kat, Ice Spice, Cardi B? Obviously there is a look that is being peddaled.

    • @niablee
      @niablee 3 месяца назад +3

      @@MJ31579yes, it’s a comment on America because it’s clear her team is playing into and pandering to that. I know there’s plenty of artists that I can listen to and I do. I even like Tyla’s music today AND before she popped but I can still critique her & speak to the fact that the moves she’s making are opportunistic just like the majority of the artists you just named 😂 I’m also not South African so, I can see how they may feel a way and I understand that!

    Sheeew you got Tyla all wrong..
    1. Tyla became an internet sensation in SA during covid lockdown, she was heavy on BLM even before having an American audience.
    2. Prior to Tyla's South African success, yet alone international success, her circle included foreign Africans. This is indicitive of the current 2k culture in JHB which is diverse. That said, Tyla surrounding herself with African artists is not in anyway opportunist.
    3. To further expand on the above point, it's not new for South African artists to collab with other African artists.
    Successful South African artists often get booked in African countries as well as the UK.
    Africa has been embracing Amapiano and South African artists long before the West. This is an organic market, that said, of course there would be marketing efforts particularly for an African audience.
    4. The marketing of the 'Tyla' brand i.e. Jungle/ Island girl aesthetic is really beyond a 22yr old who is new to the industry, with little to no power. African culture has always been wakandanized or otherwise misrepresented by Western powers and media; hence Tyla's fictional island, exotic asthetic comes as no suprise.
    5. Skins is apart of Zulu culture - its clear Tylas team is creating a melting pot of asthetics.
    6. Your critique of Tyla's culture is insensitive. Coloured culture is a byproduct of colonialism i.e. a community violently stripped of their culture. To exclude Coloured culture from African culture would be to exclude Black American culture from current day American culture.
    What is unfortunate is that an array of African music is been categorized as Afro Beats when this is a distinct sound, however it's not like these award shows are going to create a Pop Piano category. The real crime is that Black music is categorized as anything but pop, yet being popular.
    Lastly, Tyla is a young artist, don't expect much from her ideologically or politically, just have fun and enjoy the music sis - put pressure on the actual executives with power

    This is slightly nitpicky idk about this take - especially since she’s African and claims her roots. What else do you want the girl to do? All artists have to be opportunistic but I do get there is a campaign to make her the face of Africa even though there are full black African women such as Tems or Ayra that should be the face - she literally just got here (mainstream) so others that came before her should be the face.

      The bushmen you speak of are Fully African, Tyla's father is Indian, her mother is Indian, Zulu and Irish. The bushmen do not have European or Asian ancestry, Tyla does. Those two are not the same. Indigenous Africans do not have European or Asian ancestry like Tyla. This is simple.
