  • We've always got lots of fun projects going on in the basement. Some of the best are in our breeder lab! We're trying to use this space to test different ways to make breeding fish easier, faster, and more fun. In this video, Charles talks about the egg scattering fish he's been working with and what we're looking to learn from them.

Dude! you're brilliant. I am just started my attempt to breed Pseudomugil signifier, I am keeping males and females together, one school in a pond with foxtail, one in a tank with java moss and java fern. They've thrown eggs in the roots of the fern. I've not seen eggs in the outside pond. Maybe I need more foxtail in the pond. I could not save the eggs on the fern as I had to make a mad dash to work, and the adults ate them. Thus, I am barren lol.
On a purely trivial note, I pronounce serpae as serpie, the end sound like sky or ...pie, "serpie". as scientific nomenclature is heavily influenced by Latin, this is the ancient Latin pronunciation.
if it were a borrowed english word and identified as English grammar, the pronunciation might be serpae, as in knee or flee, "serpee".
I hated Latin class. I am indeed rusty. I'm not too sure how we get serpae as in serpay, but it really doesn't matter which of the three are used. Just pointless trivia that I wanted to share haha.

It’s so cool being able to say I’ve had the honor of being in the breeder lab. My favorite part of the hobby is breeding and these videos are my favorites. Great advice and I hope you guys get great results.

I'm currently breeding corydoras paleatus and noticed they like to lay eggs in Java moss and algae as well as near the roots of my floating plants along the glass. So I added a floating spawning mop and most spawns now the eggs are half on the glass half in the mop which is interesting the internet research i did seemed to suggest they only lay on the glass. I'm hoping to breed some rice fish too, just need to wait for them to mature. Raising fish from eggs is very new to me, I usually just do livebearers or a fish with some type of parental care.

It's amazing how fish can adapt and do things differently than we expect! Have you had any more luck with the egg scatterers since this comment?

@@watercolorsaquariumgallery my Paleatus Corys have been breeding every 4-7 days since this comment, slowly getting better at getting more fry to survive. Had 3 pairs of Honduran Redpoints form and start spawning which was neat, and my ricefish have some eggs on their tails!
