A 60 liter aquarium increases your electricity bill in the Netherlands by 300 euros. I can't afford that. In the cold months I have 2 containers of 15 liters, and in the warm months 4. I used to have large containers and I could breed my own breed, but my own breed, no, that is no longer possible. But I took a look at what the pet store sells. There you see males with an almost colorless tail, and the body color is often disappointing. Furthermore, males often do not yet have color, and as a buyer you can become disappointed if the color develops in a direction they do not like. So what do I do? I am not specific to a breed, but the tail and body of the male I purchase must be completely colored. And if he is of the same breed as one of the "old" males, he replaces him. I only use females born in my tanks for breeding. I only get males from the pet store that are already fully colored, and I let females grow virgin for six months. A week before they go to the pet store I add my most beautiful males. To prevent ugly men in the store from impregnating them...

I like the look of the 45° angle seams in the rimless low iron glass aquariums but I would like it if they made a rimless tank with a completely sealable glass lid that was completely clear from the front and top view to keep me from losing my snails again and also let in all the light for my plants and not yellow or become opaque over time, but not be too obtrusive in its design, maybe a flat outer glass rectangle with a bead of silicone just inside the edge to help collect the condensation in one place and provide a place for it to drip down inside the tank to prevent water from beading up all over on the lid and dripping down the outside of the tank and with a second openable part of the lid being another rectangle of glass in the centre of that other piece of glass as the lid door on a clear hinge and clear handle so that it looks more like one flat piece of glass across the top just like the sides are sheets of clear glass but so it doesn’t have the problems with dripping out of the tank as I would if I just set a sheet of glass over the top of the aquarium or finding a place to put the lid when I take it off and also doesn’t look out of place with the rimless tank aesthetic design, but it’s fully secure to escaping snails and fish and I can just drill out only precisely the amount of glass I need to have removed at the corner for my airline tubing and heater cord to barely fit through, I would also like it if the bottom of the tank was supported by a clear frame underneath of it so it didn’t matter as much if the shelf or stand I was using was wire or if the wood warped slightly after I dripped a little water on it, but again not compromising on the rimless tank aesthetic. I am currently looking for a 13”x13”cube 12”tall tank to fit on a wire rack shelf, I have that much room for it but I haven’t been able to find something with those dimensions, the closest thing I have been able to find for what I’m looking for is the aqueon six gallon cube that has a bottom black frame no top frame a partly glass partly plastic lid that looks like it might have a few gaps I would need to fill in and colour changing led lights along the inside of the bottom frame that I don’t need and probably also unnecessarily increases the price, it’s a 12” cube so I will probably end up getting that one because it fits most of my requirements and it’s not entirely out of my budget if I save up for it for a few months.

Nice info however how about getting rid of green water without spending a penny! Welljust cover all sides of of aquariums winclidimg top such that no light penetrates the aquarium. In 4-5 days green water will disappear as if it never existed. This is natural way to get solve it. Block light and see the magic.

A soil based Sub-substrate of clay, volcanic ash, and demineralized topsoil topped with a layer of any kind of calcined clay works big time for real earthroot plants like cryptocoryne, sagittaria, or Echinodorus. Then there's the bulb plants in the Aponogeton and Nymphaea lotus species which all love this base. When it gets old you can make your own root tabs with earthworm castings or Osmocote. In a full planted aquarium with healthy plants i never had any anaerobic development. { but i also don't keep deep levels that have been popular lately, as i found the deeper the soil the more it can spoil.} In my experimental days i would "poke" all over the substrate weekly to see what other people warned me of, but it never developed. So, the only thing i can think of is the heavey root development kept everything in the soil healthy. { also, don't know how true, but the Malaysian trumpet snails are know for burrowing through the soil, so they might help keep in deterring any anaerobic activity. }

I don’t know why they’re so under appreciated. Maybe because they’re not bright yellow or deep purple? 😂 Honest, they’re my favorite tang. The gradient is just beautiful… and it’s in a true Georges Seurat manner. I personally care nothing for a Yellow, and don’t really care for the purple. They’re too plain to me. And I’d take a Scopas over a Gem any day of the week! Did I mention the perfection of the gradient? 😉

Pea puffers have been a bit of a holy grail fish for me for a while, and I just bought a group of tiny ones for a 20 gallon I set up. Are there any good resources for learning to breed them?

Have not tried father fishes method yet, but i have great success with Dr. Kevin Novak's method of using a plenum and Clay based substrates . Have used kitty litter and also turface with laterite. Also have set up large tanks 40 plus gallons with these products and soil based substates combined. I use liquid ferts, dried ferts, and root tabs . Now using glass bowls with clay based substrates and just bought some saf-t-sorb. Also used kitty litter with potting soil and a plenum. Once the plenum and soil based start to break down the nitrated i no longer do gravel vac and do minimal water changes. Don't be afraid to try something new guys. Great conversation as a starter. Have always used sand as a cap , but intend to try the saf-t-sorb and laterite alone since i have also had massive growth with Turface with dry ferts and root tabs for big eaters.

It's possible that the niche filled by Corydoras in SA is filled by a juvenile of a larger catfish species in Africa?

I'm surprised you guys didn't talk about Flowerhorns (positively or negatively!). They have some big issues but they're very present in the hobby so maybe worth addressing

I have a 7" pleco in my 75 gallon cichlid tank, and I'm happy with him stirring up the bottom and such. He's some kind of sailfin pleco that should be at just about max size. He does monopolize a cave and eat eggs whenever my cichlids lay them, so I would probably skip him for bristlenose if I was doing it all again, but I don't feel the need to get rid of him or anything.

I'm listening to do my research on how to properly seed a new freshwater tank. I know I want a 55 gallon freshwater tank with live plants, shrimp, some snails, a few clams, some guppie, and some goldfish. My goal is to have no more than 25 animals in the tank. I know I will also be maintaining 3 smaller (1.5 gallon) tanks for any fry or live feeder organisms (brine shrip, moina, or fry) or isolation that might be needed. I know I want a mixture of sand and gravel substrates. I want to do a freshwater tank because I am already familiar with the maintenance from when I had fish before. I tend to do weekly water changes and testing. The area I want to put the tank is directly supported by a concrete slab, so it should support 1,000 pounds easily. I intend to have an aerator (or 2), heater, thermometer and waterfall charcol filter with a sponge for each tank. I am still wondering if I should start with the plants (with a CO2 booster and fertalizer) or start with the fish, shrimp & snails and add the plants. I know I would wait until the tank is well established before adding the clams.

No matter what kind of spots,bands, colors etc. NO PLECOS ARE BEAUTIFUL! THEY ARE DISGUSTING THORNY CREATURES FROM HELL! THEY ARE AS BAD OR WORSE THEN ANY OTHER INVASIVE ANIMAL IN FLORIDA INCLUDING PYTHONS, AS THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER ENTIRE CREEKS AND RIVER SYSTEMS DESTROYING THE HABITATS OF MANY OTHER SPECIES OF FISH BOTH NATIVE AND NON-NATIVE EVEN CAUSING SORES ON MANATEES BY GRAZING ALGAE OFF THEIR BODIES, IN THESE WATERS YOU CAN LOOK INTO THEM AND SEE THOUSANDS OF PLECOS BACK TO BACK NOSE TO TAIL STRETCHING FOR MILES! I HATE PLECOS!!!

$10 dollars spent on any another fish will get you way more enjoyment than spending $50 plus on some of the fancy plecos. The breeders charge soo much because the effort that goes in. But from a hobbyist perspective why would you ever buy one.

Outdoor temperature variations between night and day mixes the water naturally, It's a lot more subtle than an air stone. Water can be too turbulent when using air stone similar to copepod culturing.

I like your breeding ethics, I would feel very comfortable getting fish you bred, knowing that you manage the gene pool right. For other breeders, it’s really a gamble, some don’t even understand the concept of inbreeding, or dismiss it all together. I’m glad you are open with how you manage diversity, more breeders should be open about it.
