This was the best scene ever in that wonderful series. Robert Hardy was a masterful actor and I have watched this scene numerous times. There will never be another like him. Ever.
@@alangarrett1181 I honestly can't say there is ONE 'best' Siegfried scene in particular. There were a couple of great ones which, in MY opinion, were equal to one another. Robert Hardy was excellent as Siegfried but there were several 'antics' of his where he outdid himself if you know what I mean.
What a wonderful traditional British drama. A national treasure. I love watching it over and over again. I come from a farming background not of that era. My late grandfather and I watched it in the 1980s he could relate to it during the war and loved it, wit, humour hands on and attention to detail. Brilliant cast. 4:42
This was and still is my parents' favourite television program. The educational aspect of the show as well as the cozy rustic setting of pre-WW2 England is what appealed to them the most.
How could u noy live that man robert Hardy amazing actor always makes women smile 😃 and forgive me buy i had the biggest crush on the man ❤ stil watch the old programme with him evey now and again xx
Love Hardy's quirks, subtle facial tics, and innocent charm..I don't think he had to act, as this was how I encountered him at one of his longbow demonstrations so many years ago.
Upon news of his death, I, too, thought instantly of the cake scene. It should be required watching for all prospective actors ( and cameramen for that matter). Hardy is the only actor I ever saw capable of acting a soliloquy in a roomful of people. They become little more than props to showcase his talent. I am sorry he is gone.
Has anyone noticed the sound of cows in the background? And when Mrs. Hewison raises one eyebrow? Let us applaud Cynthia Etherington, among the many players who make life worth living.
This delightful, amusing, edge-of-your-seat scene and the whole All Creatures series could not be made in the USA. Another great scene from the series was one where James was invited to have breakfast with the farm family who had called him out on a job very early in the morning. Earlier in the episode, James was upbraided by Housekeeper/cook, Mrs Hall, for leaving uneaten fatty portions of the meat she had cooked for his meal. So we knew from that that James disliked fatty meat. When James later sat down for breakfast at the farm, he was presented with large slabs of what was 95% greasy fat, relieved only by a sprinkling of minuscule islands of meat. James got through the ordeal only by commandeering the jar of homemade chutney/pickles and lathering copious amounts over every forkful of the fat he put in his mouth. The kindly farmer's wife gave James a large chunk of the same 'meat', wrapped in brown paper & string as he left. James wasted no time after leaving the farm, in throwing the gift out the car window.
Don’t understand why anyone throws shade at the 2020’s series vs the 1980’s series? Both are excellent! The recent series benefits in particular from being filmed in high definition, showing the gloriously beautiful scenery and architecture of north eastern England. Not knowing what to expect and ready to be disappointed, I found myself completely captured by new series, which slid onto my viewing foot like the most comfortable snuggle slippers! The original set such a standard of quality I was prepared to be disappointed but was delighted when the opposite occurred. Hurrah for both versions!
I've seen the more recent All Creatures & it's tolerable. Replace Robert Hardy as Siegfried? It's just not possible! I love every actor in the original BBC shows (both series), but, for me, Hardy is always the catalyst for everyone else ~ the main attraction. This is a perfect example of his genius at work (-: I wish the BBC had left us a few more clips from the original on YT. What harm could that possibly do?
Is this actually in one of the books? i don't remember reading it (or Christopher Timothy reading to me! ) I remember many other scenes where James eats/drinks with many farmers/clients. My favorite is the story where James visits a two farms early one Christmas morning, the first one is very ungrateful and rude and leaves James feeling a little jaded, but then all is redeemed when he visits the second farm and it turns out the family's favorite goat has eaten the farmer's "summer drawers" (short underwear) and was choking. James then goes into the kitchen for some Christmas cake and a cup of tea or sherry or something, and is made most welcome and thanked properly. My second fave is mentioned by someone else here in the comments, where James has to politely eat breakfast consisting of thick white pork fat which he has to choke down with a jar of piccalilli.
It's in the original British book -- for some reason, when they were compiling them into the American editions (All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, etc.) I think this was one of the stories they left out!

He is greatly missed. Such a wonderful actor, and he seemed to be a very nice person in real life too.
While its one of Siegfried's best scenes, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the best overall.
@@retroguy9494 have another in mind?

An outstanding actor
I love it when he takes out his glasses and examines the cake! LOL
Magnificent Robert Hardy ❤️❤️
Incredible acting.
Amazing scene. I miss this so much. R.I.P. Robert Hardy. Thank you.
An impeccably-made scene.

I was looking for this scene and found it :)
Thanks for uploading

A great scene from a great series, this is the greatest episode of them all in my opinion
The cake scene... my favourite, I nearly laughed myself to death
Thanks for the upload. I didn't realize he had passed away. What a tragedy. :(
My favorite actor of all time. Reminds me of my dad in every way. That would be when he was playing Siegfried.
He was the backbone of the entire series. I can't imagine it without him. An absolute genius. My favourite character by far (and I love them all).
The cryptic way they pass the plate lol
😁😎
You need to look up the meaning of 'cryptic' in a dictionary it means 'mysterious'. How can a person pass a plate mysteriously?
@@autodidact537 ik and if ever someone could, believe me they did.
I love this episode and the cake tasting especially.

Siegfriedwas a foodie fan. Not a glutton ,he never ove rate but he loved his food
One of my favorite scenes
One of my favorite scenes of all time but I believe it is S2E14, not 12. I could be wrong.
I love this

What happened to all those All Creatures ... full episodes on youtube? Searches lead to the recently made series, mostly.
Your town's library might have DVD's.
The family was delighted because the cake was made by someone else this time. It was a test.

Does anyone know the title of the melody at the end of this clip in the car scene?
Piano Parchment, you’re welcome.
I have all the books - condensed editions from USA - can anyone tell me please in which book is this story?
I believe the cake judging story is in "Vet in Harness."
