Audrey Hall is the best character in this series. Intelligent, compassionate, insightful and most beautiful. I love her voice especially how Anna does it accent, crackling, inflection and all.
This is one of the best programs that has ever come out of England. I have CDC's of the seasons 1 and 2, and I have played/listed to it at leased fifteen/twenty times in the past four months. Amazing. Thank you PBS for [picking it up for all of us in Canada. Thank you

When this series was done the first time, I really didn’t think the most current one could touch it. The cast in the first series was superb, and, of course, the stories speak for themselves. However, as this adaptation has evolved, I am more and more touched by the deepness of the relationships and the way their personalities are being developed in such a humanistic way.
Just that its not the real story Mrs Hall was an old women a widow and she had an admirer. Helen was no tomboy she took care of her younger sublings two not one and Siegfried had five dogs not one

My mother passed away a year ago and I refuse to get over it. It's especially hard since Dad won't talk about it, or anything else that matters. But since we started watching this series together, something happened and we've become closer. I'm so grateful for this show right now.
I agree, this version of Mrs Hall is the most personable and interacts with Siegfried best. Siegfried needs someone who is his equal to temper and stand up to him!
Mrs. Hall in the original books is nothing whatsoever like the Mrs. Hall in the new series. Mrs. Hall in the original series was much more like the character presented in the books. The new character is meant to reflect 21st century sensibilities. Lovely, but not as historically/culturally convincing. Also, writers of the new series have taken huge liberties with the original stories. I do hope people will actually read the books. They are wonderful.
Oh, yes, not many shows will tug at the viewers' heartstrings, but the shows that CAN are indeed very well written and acted. It always amazes me that they can find so many instances of animals giving birth to film.
The original series was more true to the books, but I love what they've done with the characters in this series. I just watched both of them, and I love each one differently. I really love all of the actors in both, but these are more endearing. I can't wait for the new season!
They are brilliantly cast and played (with Sam at times channeling Robert Hardy in a spooky way, whilis Anna is the heart of the household that reminds me of Mrs Hughes whilst not being overly so). I am so glad that I found this series and really needed it.
I've just come back from a few days break in Grassington, North Yorkshire where the external village scenes are filmed. What a perfect location! We enjoyed lunch in the Drovers Arms and a pint of the Drovers ale brewed specially for the series.
This is my favorite series on PBS and looking forward to season 5. Read the books many years ago in school and just ordered the books to read them again. These two are my favorite characters on the series and I felt bad on this last season when Audrey and Gerald broke up. The animals like Trikki Woo make the series even better!
I started watching this series about a month ago and I'm all caught up. I subscribed to PBS masterpiece theater just so I could watch it. Been watching about an episode a night. It's the best thing that's ever been on TV as far as I'm concerned. Everything from the writing to the acting to the story to the cinematography to the incredible interconnected episodic stories… It's just wonderful. I have not read the books but I have ordered them, and it drives me crazy that Mrs. Hall and Sigried have not figured out that they need to be together. 🥰 I hope season 5 come sooner rather than later
I’m still rooting for this ship … I felt like they were playing with the idea more in the first then the second season (so far), but they did drop what could’ve been a tad of it this season …
All Creatures Great and Small is my all time favourite television show. I live in Australia and as yet we have not seen Series 3 and 4 Hopefully it will be shown on our ABC Thank you for the pleasure this show gives so many people. Sincerely Chris
The original was their housekeeper. Loved and respected, yes. But first and foremost, their housekeeper. The new Mrs. Hall, well I see the relationship between Mrs. Hall and Siegfried is different. More intimate and I do not mean physical. However, there appears to be that potential given a younger and more attractive Mrs. Hall.
Truly impertinent question here, but inquiring minds want to know: are the decorative lights on the Christmas tree toward the end really close to a chartreuse & Pepto-Bismol pink or did the camera distort what was green & red? If they are the more pastel, garish colors, is that because they used different types of tree lights back 83 years prior to the filming of this scene?
Love the series but the original one was my favorite, especially Robert Hardy who in real life was a local of this area and he rode horses across the countryside. I wonder if this series will go on as long as the old one did, I believe there were 7 series and several specials. One positive thing about the new series is they gave "Helen" a more interesting role. The original Helen, Carol Drinkwater, left the series and had to be replaced as she said she got bored. There should be more series like these.
I Loved Robert Hardy I'm watching all the series now on Drama everyday .It was such a total waste of a lovely Man when I read he had taken his own life You were so lucky he lived in your area .This program is very nice but Robert was the Best just thought he was amazing .
I was prepared to deeply dislike this incarnation. I was wrong. There's more to to say that wasn't in the original books and series. I am profoundly moved by this incarnation.
Seems to be a completely new story. Mrs. Hall never had so much to say. There were so many comedic moments and this version seems too dramatic. This isn’t what James Herriot wrote.
I hope they get together. In the older tv version from 1978-1990, Siegfried get together with Caroline Fisher. The real life Siegfried Farnons second wife was called Audrey. But I believe she was not his housekeeper. I don't know if Mr Hammond is based on a real person or fictional.
I’ve read the books several times. Mrs Hall was only mentioned in passing - never great stretches of dialogue as this new series shows. The original series of ACG&S made an agreement with Alf Wight (the true James Herriot and the author of the books) that they would stick to his books and only film stories from his books. This new series seems to be taking greater liberties. I like the new Mrs Hall (the original actress was also exceptional) but we have to suspend our hope for an accurate portrayal of the books.

Another great production from the Brits! I LOVE the show and purchased all three seasons and can’t wait for the fourth. Can’t get TV here in the US like this. Back in the 70’s and 80’s we had great TV but it’s all gone to hell now
In the original series, the widowed Mrs. Hall was going to marry another guy just as Siegfried and James were leaving to join the Royal Air Force at the start of WW II. When the series resumed several years later, they all paid tribute to Mrs. Hall, who had apparently died while they were serving in the military. Sadly, actress Mary Hignet, who portrayed the Rock of Gibraltar-like Mrs. Hall, died after undergoing surgery during the show’s hiatus. She was greatly missed on the show.
Kinda wonder how Tristan will be when he returns from Military service...Will he come back with a bride in tow..Will he still want to be a Veterinarian like his big brother.
I've read all the books and the relationship they portray here is pure fiction. It makes for good viewing but there was no sexual tension between the two in real life.
I don't see their relationship as having sexual tension at all. All the people who are posting about it here are just projecting what the want it to be. Their relationship is great as is.
There may be something wrong with the rest of us, but I do not feel sexual tension between these two at all. They are more like siblings. She is more like the sister in between the two brothers that never was. I think he would rue losing her to her love interest because he has come to depend upon her in a familial way, but not spousal manner.
There was no tension between them in real life because Mrs Hall never existed. She was invented for the books. There never was a housekeeper at the practice.
I can’t agree sadly… I just watched the entire first BBC series. The acting is superb but more importantly it keeps much closer to the books. I have tried 4 times to watch this production and just can’t get into it at all.
It seems to me that Mrs. Hall interferes too much in the relationships between Tristan and Sigfreid, Also, why does Helen comment on things Tristan does or says? Shouldn't she mind her own business too?
I think this was made with American 💵 in mind. American audiences never really ‘get’ British characterizations, or period sensibilities, or actual historical culture.
I'm curious if this is a collection of run-throughs or rehearsals? I'm asking because the actors in these scenes don't appear to be acting much. I mean, there's not much energy.....everything is flat, the pacing is making me drowsy. So, I'm guessing they're conserving their dynamism for an actual take?
I have to agree. The actors seem very talented but this is just not for me. Absolutely none of this is in the book. It is made up out of whole cloth, and it needs to be remembered that while these were fictional characters, they were fictional characters based on real people. Not for me.

This is a beautiful story. True to the book or not doesn’t bother me. The story has just been updated a little bit, that’s all. I love the gentle unfolding of a budding romance that pulls you in and makes you want to shout, “Come on Siegfried and Mrs Hall! When are you going to wake up and realize you’ve fallen in love?

this i the worse thing they could do to herriots book. this is not all creatures great and small of james herriots books/ it is an insult James herriot would turn over in his grave if he saw this
The production of the original series was pretty rough. The timing was very unsyncopated, so hard to watch at times. The animals are better featured in later series. First series ran 10+ years and suffered from attrition of actors, sadly. New series seems confidently invested ($$$) and productions not slapdash. Read Mister Wight's "James Harriot's Dog Stories" which seems to be a notebook of dog and people sketches, from which he drew reference for his books, but it is the other way around naturally. This is the 9th book. The Harriot way of composition of the greater play makes me think he would approve of redoing the series.🦮 🐕🦺 🐕

I have fallen in love with this show on PBS here in Chicago.
Both series are excellent. I never thought I would get used to the newer version, but i have been so pleasantly surprised.

this i the worse thing they could do to herriots book. this is not all creatures great and small of james herriots books/ it is an insult James herriot would turn over in his grave if he saw this

The production of the original series was pretty rough. The timing was very unsyncopated, so hard to watch at times. The animals are better featured in later series.
First series ran 10+ years and suffered from attrition of actors, sadly. New series seems confidently invested ($$$) and productions not slapdash.
Read Mister Wight's "James Harriot's Dog Stories" which seems to be a notebook of dog and people sketches, from which he drew reference for his books, but it is the other way around naturally. This is the 9th book. The Harriot way of composition of the greater play makes me think he would approve of redoing the series.🦮 🐕🦺 🐕
