    Ever since the 2015 release of Hideo Kojima's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN, fans have endlessly speculated over its many secrets, misdirects, and possible interpretations. Yet its harshest critics, on the other hand, have alleged the game was left unfinished, and ultimately unfulfilling.
    A common complaint has been that TPP lacked cutscenes with the typical MGS substance, and that it's story feels elliptical. Even die-hard fans have convinced themselves of a coming secret 'Chapter Three', where every dot will be connected, and every stray plot-line conclusively tied up.
    But is it possible that underneath it all, MGSV is not only a completely finished game, but one with more detailed, rich, and nuanced cut-scenes than any entry before it?
    In this new series from Futurasound Productions, creator of the hit trilogy 'WTF Happens in MGSV', we return again to the polarizing and mysteriously hypnotic swan song that is MGSV:TPP - this time to take a deeper dive than ever, specifically into the cutscenes.
    Does one of the nurses at the beginning wear a wig? Are there phantoms that continually reappear throughout the hourlong, action packed, psychedelic opening? Are there hidden clues beneath its many layers of violence, psychosexuality, and quasi-mysticism? Let's find out!

      I'd like to see someone make a genuine decent "Metal Gear Iceberg" rabbit hole image (or images if each game was done separately). I've seen one or two on reddit but those just scratched the surface of all the complexity of the games. Kojima has said something before about how he enjoys making a game that is more than just what's on the disk, like the Moby Dick Studios stunt before MGSV and the mask of a bandaged up face he wore in interviews. The way he creates speculation, and creates scenarios in his games that create feelings for the player to either put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist or make a greater expression using the game to convey Kojima's desired tone. Like the surprise Raiden protagonist bait and switch up in MGS2 teaching a lesson in free will. As well as how in MGSV finding out you never were playing as the real Big Boss invalidating everything you done as by some unnamed field doctor made players feel hollow, as well as the proper ending was missing gave the players a yearning for validation and completion like feeling incomplete and something was missing like phantom limb syndrome. Unable to come to terms a part of you is missing. See what I mean about the rabbit hole going so deep, I was just trying to make a short comment regarding its complexity and ended up typing a manifesto on the series...

    I like the idea that since the game is from the perspective of Venom Snake, it all cant be trusted because he himself is not a reliable narrator. That’s probably why we, as the player, have Ocelot feeding us almost everything in terms of information, tactics and context.
    But then again, he’s not entirely reliable either.

    • @TheOneShotWunda
      @TheOneShotWunda 4 месяца назад +1

      That’s the issue. Ocelot has himself fooled half the time so how reliable can anyone be as a narrator? Especially since the whole premise of the game is based on a ruse

  • @AvianSavara
    @AvianSavara 3 года назад +193

    I'm so glad you highlighted the whole "is it really digoxin"? or "is that really what digoxin does"? because technically, Venom's handlers keep him dosed with the substance throughout the entire story. Through the Phantom Cigar, for example. And they make you pick it up in the field, too, as Digitalis purpurea, or "Foxglove", from which digoxin is derived. At higher doses, it causes loss of appetite, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, nightmares, agitation, and *depression, hallucinations, anxiety and colour fading, acute psychosis, delirium, amnesia*, convulsions. Several of these symptoms they claim are from your helicopter crash, but it could easily be from the drug.
    Venom Snake is "full of venom" . Ocelot says so, almost in an approving way. Sounds to me like someone's casually congratulating his pet project on having passed a certain threshold.

      Got to be some reasoning behind this

    • @mez333
      @mez333 3 года назад +56

      @@dmurphy915 Yes, this is also explained. Mantis/the boy seeks out the strongest emotiom of revenge around him. Once he links with somebody this person can in some way use and control him. This is why when he links with the man ln fire his sleeves trun into fire and when he links with venom he gains his horn.
      The boy will carry the other persons strogest desire. If he is already linked to someone but someone else comes with a stronger feeling of revenge he will ditch the previous person and link with the new one. This is what happens to the man on fire when Eli comes close in the helicopter. And since Eli really hates Snake and no one else, he focuses him with Sahelantropus.

I still question my life after my coma, things seem strange and out of place yet perfectly in line, and it seems like yesterday's important details are today's forgotten history. In the same Vein of The Phantom Pain, this game is absolutely brilliant and I really wish it would have been as fleshed out as intended.

    That doesn't just look like Ishmael, it IS him, he's literally behind the courtain.
    A guy used a hack to move the camera in free mode during that cutscene and Ishmael is literally on the other side, sticked to the courtain in the same pose as when Venom is sticked to a wall.
    He's also crouched behind it in the sequence when Quiet attacks you.
    And by the way, the thing about the tapes maybe not being always with Venom and Ocelot and instead with Big Boss is true.
    In the game's files there's some strings that indicate the tape where Ocelot explains where the name Salashaska came from was originally meant to be bundled with the Truth tapes, so that might be a tape that was between Big Boss and Ocelot.

    One note - "108", the number of foreign bodies embedded in Venom Snake, is a number with HEAPS of symbolic connotations. Also, the fact that they're embedded near his heart is kinda sweet. Paz (and everyone else who was lost) will always be with him, their roots are already planted in him.
    Also, the doc says the bandages were for your protection, then SECONDS AFTER THEY'RE REMOVED, Quiet shows up and starts killin' folks. Now those're some damn good bandages.

    Very interesting analysis. There are many recurring themes and settings in MGSV but they are included so subtly that I don't think that 90% of the players ever even notice them.
    Something about the theme of mirrors and perception that was a big part of this analysis: A phantom pain is literally treated with mirror therapy. The amputated limb is put behind a mirror and the remaining one in front of it. Then the patient looks at the reflection and mirrors the actual limb's movements with their phantom limb, which can release the limb from the chronic pain. The pain obviously is caused by the brain but just by cheating your perception there is a chance that the pain stops.
    Actually, in the Truth ending where Venom Snake punches the mirror with his bionic arm the reflection shows a healthy, actual arm instead. Also in that image the string of Snake's eyepatch is reclected so that it's visible on both sides of his forehead forming a V-pattern. I don't think this is a coincidence since the V-pattern is present so much in the prologue as well. The meaning of the whole mirror scene is pretty much up for one's interpretation but it still seems to be quite meaningful imagery, nonetheless.

A current irony we face is how it sort of loops in on itself as we look back trying to understand where it comes from. It could be said, from a certain set of observations, that the human race has evolved toward believing itself to be in a simulation. As you acknowledge your experience while moving forward in your analysis, what you're doing here becomes increasingly helpful in dealing with the very idea of "simulation" as we continue to understand it.

    I picked up on a subtle hint something was off in the opening cutscene, when the doctor shows you your face, and you have the one white eye, I knew something was wrong, I played MGS 3 a ton, and i remember what happened to Snake, its not that he's blind in one eye, he only has one eye, the other was destroyed not blinded. Fantastic little hint there that rewards veterans of the series.

Once Quiet shows up and the situation starts unfolding intensity is turned up to 11 and got me very invested in the game just like that. It gets crazier as you go and really makes you want to figure out what the hell is happening.
