    ORIGINALLY CREATED: 2019
2015's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN uses as one of its two major areas of operation, the Angola/Zaire border region in Central Africa. In this video, as part four of my analysis of the importance of setting to MGSV at large, we take a deep dive into the history of mercenaries in the region, mainly focusing on the 20th Century and the context of South African apartheid, in order to examine how the region, with its unique blend of cultures and long history, its borders largely the fictive figment of Western minds, fits into MGSV's wider themes.

It's a way to protect white supremacy, since tackling the history of different African countries with any depth or nuance, especially contemporary history, would humanize the people there and make students question their country's involvement with imperialism. Even a lot of people ostensibly on the left have this patronizing idea that everyone in Africa was kind of just chilling until Europeans rolled up, which showcases a lack of knowledge or willingness to learn about the cultures there.

Well, it's heavily fictionalized, but the background was always rooted in real world conflicts/history. It serves as commentary of real world events by using them as the context to frame and inspire such great story telling. MGS is one of the best examples of historical fiction ever. It's created it's own world that's at times hard to distinguish from our reality, which is very much on brand for the particular stories of the MGS universe as well as how history itself is shaped by those who write the books.

Rhodesia was a sovereign nation, now the wealth of Africa gets sucked up by an apparatus of offshore banks controlled by a group of people who would have less genetics in common with Europeans than a number of Africans. And in modern day white mercenaries are still hired, often by Africans *themselves*
but hey, somehow things are better now that the guys interested statecraft arent in charge anymore and people are slaughtered to fuel materialism by nihilists instead of "racists" that wanted to live in Africa for some strange reason

Big Boss is very much analogous to Hannibal Barca (even missing the eye) and Alexander the Great with their involvements in long standing theaters of war like central Africa and Afghanistan.

Very nice video, you clearly did a lot of historical research, and provided great context. However, I think you are seriously misunderstanding and misrepresenting Conrad's book Heart of Darkness. Conrad was criticizing the European exploitation of African people and African resources and calling into question the European assumptions and values that led to cruelty in the Congo. The title Heart of Darkness doesn't refer to Africa, but to the corruption and brutality caused by untrammeled power and inequality. Another of his books, Lord Jim, is also a strong critique of European imperialism and exploitation.

What is interesting to note on SA's support of Rhodesia is that Rhodesia was less oppressive than SA in some ways but more in others. For example, tribes in Rhodesia had autonomous tribal governance, and blacks could not only join the Rhodesian Army but even become officers (such as in the Selous Scouts). However, they had no voting rights because they were deemed unready for it. Apparently Ian Smith wanted to make sure they were mostly educated and literate before granting voting rights, but this created an environment that made the black population feel infantilised as second-class citizens, driving some of them towards ZANU and ZAPU, who were backed by the Chinese and Soviet Union respectively. ZANU under Robert Mugabe would eventually win the presidential election (generally by threatening genocide against those who didn't vote for him).
Overall, I think that your take lacks nuance.
Also, what was going on with all the seemingly out-of-nowhere cuts?

Look up the Vela Incident. An unexplained massive explosion in 1979 halfway between South Africa and Antarctica. It is widely believed, but was never proven, to be an illegal South African nuclear test done with aid and materials from Israel.

I'm all for my people the afrikaners becoming more villainous in future games. It's no fun always fighting russians. It's hilarious hearing them swearing in my language and only getting a super mild translation. The best one in mgsv was them saying "it's f3cking ridiculous" only to get subtitled as "it's unbelievable".
