2015's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN opens in Cyprus, where a conflict has continued to smolder since 1974. In this video, as part two of my analysis of the importance of setting to MGSV at large, we take a deep dive into the history of Cyprus, mainly focusing on the 20th Century, in order to examine how the island, with its unique blend of cultures and long history, fits into MGSV's wider themes.
Along the way, we also wind up discussing the Greek Civil War that followed World War 2, and how the Truman Doctrine was issued in response. As a result, a 'new kind of war' was born - one that was waged in respect to the new threat provided by nuclear weapons, and one that paved the way, to some degree, for the 21st Century's War on Terror.
Lastly, we also discuss Anglo-American internationalism, the empty promise of the Soviet system, and other 'groups above nations' like NATO and the United Nations. I put forward the controversial idea that such bodies are arguably, the direct descendants of colonialism, and use Mark Mazower's 'No Enchanted Palace' to speculate whether, specifically, the 'special relationship' created between America and the UK in the early 20th Century did not perpetuate a system of continued racial dominion.
As a last note, I did my best researching a lot of controversial and sensitive subjects here. I'm bound to get at least a few things slightly wrong, so please let me know in the comments if you notice anything amiss. The reason I call what I do 'essays' is because I don't consider myself a historian: this is my best attempt at interpreting history, totally subjectively, through the lens of MGSV.

As an Irish man.... Home rule / one island /two religious people / British meddling.... So familiar
These are completely different circumstances and you're a fool for drawing any similarities between the two.
@@b-92s25 I don't know who is the bigger fool here.
@@b-92s25 Ah yes, because other cultures/ societies can’t experience similar situations and, as you feel compelled to, we should insult those airing said feelings and grievances. Right?
Like pre-war Belgium. One country, two language groups / German meddling.
Or pre-Revolutionary Belgium, one country, two religious people (Dutch were much more protestant in those days / French meddling.
Like Ireland, Belgium is still not whole. Parts of Belgium are still in France (Hauts-de-France), Holland (Zeelandic Flanders en Limburg) and the entire country of Luxemburg.
But there's zero animosity about these things. People don't care. And in case of Luxemburg, Belgium wants an independent Luxemburg as it's a tax haven for rich Belgians.
BeNeLux Union make these points moot anyway and the French can keep Northern France, we **really** don't want it :D
as a Yugoslav man... three languages/ four religions/ five nationalities/ six republics/ seven neighboring nations/ eight minorities... just to quote Marshall Tito.
I'm Greek-American and an International Relations professor, and I just want to say that this is fantastic, well-researched, entertaining, and I'm really glad people are making videos like this. Wow.
(Greek) Cypriot here. Excellent video really with neutral and deep looking research. I would have liked if you had covered more the incidents of 1964 and 1974 and how the British (along with USA) had the eventual split of the island planned with a full map long before it happened. All your points are correct and all the problems come from individual persons. There are good hearted people all around the world along with people that just want to see the world (and others) burn. Ask me anything, i'm a very open person and i have a few (Turkish) Cypriot friends as well. Lastly i want to thank Kojima for touching these subjects and Futurasound i'm waiting for your next video. MGS has been my favorite game series back when i was 7 years old and i learnt about it from my cousin playing MGS1 on this PS1...My face dropped when i started playing MGSV on release day ;p
Another Greek Cypriot here. Big fan of the channel, but I was afraid to click on this particular one, fearing the angle, context, inaccuracies, etc. But this comment has made me want to watch it.
I'm sorry but what's going on in Cyprus right now?Apparently someone claimed that Turkey is occupying the northern part of Cyprus.
The amount of care and attention to details you put into your work is crazy
You have all my respect
I noticed that a lot of these locations all revolve around British involvement. Cyprus, Afghanistan, and the Congo (with South African presence)
old blighty has a lot to answer for :(
Yes. It struck me as odd that the theme of British colonialism wasn't referred to more explicitly in the game, considering the storyline
Major Tom
Wherever the British planted their flag, things got messy.
An issue with flag planting in general, but the British planted the most.
And are still proud of it.
Congo was Belgium though
Do you have a degree in history? The information in this video is so compact and concise. You are deserving of way more subs.
The internet is a library of history, ideological memes and secrets hidden in plain sight, the only thing one has to have is the drive to learn and search through
Dmitry TKR Lmao not sure about that one bud
@@chuchu9649 Dude every university in my country is doing online classes only this year; but you can't learn the same things without paying 5 figures and doing a passing grade essay per week?
Guys fuck the ivory tower & we can more or less dispose of the entire western philosophical tradition as far as I'm concerned, but to suggest you can learn just by staring at the absolute avalanche of bullshit that exists online is naive in the extreme.
Even "critical thinking," the catch-all term we use to refer to "how to parse information" or maybe just "how to recognise propaganda," is now a mostly-bullshit concept. The information is all here, for sure, but the accessibility creates as many problems as it solves.
I still prefer this to "the Academy" though, don't get me wrong.
@@TheSoulHarvester it’s definitely possible. It’d be pretty hard but so many trusted sources exist on every single topic imaginable. As a person attending college right now it’s mostly using databases and trusted sources to find academic journals that are already online in PDF form that you can email the author to get for free(trust me they always do it saying how they rarely get any profit from the libraries and databases selling it).
I just thought Kojima picked Cyprus because of the David Bowie song "Move On" which features the lyric "Cyprus is my Island, when the going's rough, I would love to find you somewhere in a place like that". It makes sense since Bowie's music plays such a key role in MGSV (Man Who Sold The World, and Diamond Dogs)

@@artoub8143 thats where mr Kojima San the master worlds tricks you into thinking his games are merely games. You ignorant fool.
I suspect Kojima's attention was turned to Cyprus thanks to Bowie. Then Kojima did a bunch of research about the island, its history, and its place in the wider geopolitical landscape. Kojima being Kojima, this set gears turning, and formed the narrative we see in MGSV.

I lived in Cyprus for five years due to my studies so this story is close to my heart. I've met people there that you could say almost adopted me and helped me during that time and these events are very recent and painful for them. Even people my age grew up in families that had at least one missing person. It's ironically, a version of Phantom Pain for them. Unseen for most of the time but still there.
Thank you for covering this with the respect that it warrants.

It's amazing how I came to see this video expecting a talk more related to MGSV and found myself watching (or listening) a documentary and how it not only talked about Cyprus' recent history but about the context it gives to the recent world history
Matches up with the events and political/military landscape of mgsv. Hideo Kojima is a genius.
This all sounds interesting but I feel like I'm not understanding this as much as I want to. But I don't know where to begin. I feel like I'm just listening
Just soak it in m8. It's a lot of information; more context will arrive as you live your life, & understanding with it.
Cyprus should have been a playable map. When the game takes place, the Turkish army was still occupying the half of the island.
It would have been nice to actually explore Cyprus more.
This is the best Metal Gear related channel in existence. Keep up the good work

I just want to clarify that the British did not "create Afghanistan". The afghan rulers signed an agreement with Britain to recognise the "Durand line", which would be the border between British India and their land. You made it sound like British made the whole nation up from scratch.
"... No Afghan government, including the present one headed by President Ashraf Ghani, has ever recognized the legitimacy of the Durand Line, which runs through mountainous terrain and remains largely unpoliced. The Durand Line... is viewed by many Afghans as an arbitrary and nonsensical reflection of geography, history and culture..." www.mei.edu/publications/durand-line-british-legacy-plaguing-afghan-pakistani-relations
The 'Afghan ruler' you refer to was specifically Amir Abdur Rahman Khan, aka the "Iron Amir". Khan was a British-installed despot: "the British negotiated a settlement recognizing ʿAbd al-Raḥmān as amīr in return for his acknowledgment of the British right to control his foreign relations. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān pacified the country and consolidated his authority."

7:20 Guerrillas were nothing new, the term was coined 200 years ago
Correct me if im wrong but was Guerrilla warfare popularized during the american revolution? I remember hearing something about that from skool.
@@fellowtraveler3631 I believe it was one of the most notable cases of it's use, but I believe the term was coined in the Spanish War of independence against Napoleon, which would made sense given the structure of the word in Spanish (guerrilla meaning is Little war). Does the "Legacy of Ashes" book discuss former Nazi's being integrated into the CIA, after WWII? Since the Nazi's believed it was their duty to rid the world of Communism, I'm wondering how much of their beliefs influenced US foreign policy.
This video is so misleading regarding Greek civil war. The war wasn't about monarchy or communism. It was a Communist revolution that was suppressed by the national army. The political faction that mainly fought against communism in Greece was the center. Venizelos was a major political figure that was against communism. The political center in Greece is formed around the idea of patriotism and social policies.

The best video Ive seen on your channel, unity through national identity has always been hard to achieve because of ethnic identity, wether that ethnicity was distinguishable or not, just look at cyprus, yugoslavia and todays ukraine. Unity is something all nations and people should strive towards, but as we see ethnicity and foreign policy aggressive against nations with that ethnicity have long been causing much division and conflict throughout history. However, unity behind national identity has in many parts of the world transcended ethnicity, such is the case with todays US, Russia and pre yugoslav wars yugoslavia. In my eyes there are one of 2 main causes of ethnic conflict: ethnic groups being oppressed, provoked or threatened either directly or by foreign policy against nations with their ethnic majority, or such as the case was with cyprus, ethnic or national division being created when there is none there to weaken the unity and strength of those unified people and cause division. Nationalism, Religion, ethnicity and many other aspects of humanity are used and exploited in many instances to further the goals of ideology, powers and conspiracy as is the case with the conspiratorial view of history, but ironically their founding purpose is to unify. Nationalism and ethnic pride should never infringe or threaten the lives of innocence or be exploited that way, instead they should fulfill their purpose, that is to unify. Unfortunately, either by nationalist leaders or globalist conspiracy, that important and fundamental aspect of unity and freedom is forgotten, and thus conflict arises.
Freedom, nationalism and unity is something you cant have without being willing to share it with or appealing to everyone else. And that is what true liberty through unity is.

The implication of Japan's clause being put into the Treaty of Versailles is that *the status of sovereign warfare as a tool for racial inequality between the populations of countries like Cyprus or Afghanistan would have been at major, if not monumental danger.*
The idea that civil war could be used as a tool to determine the *"purest, most rightful singular race for a country"* would also have been at a turning point, giving nations such as South Africa, Afghanistan, and even America a much better set of relations between the non United Nations-backed counties. As a result, both nuclear warfare and other forms of warfare would have been set to a much lower standard between the still unchecked agressions (lmfao) of these nations.
No Afgan Conflict, no Belarus Conflict, no Vietnamese Conflict, no Cyprus Conflict. Without any political/religious/racial/insurgencies being *allowed* between these nations from this treaty's demand for freedom of equality, none of these wars would be deemed acceptable by the Warsaw Pact; as it would have been written with a much different intention, as ideological disagreements could not be deemed "acceptable cause for warfare". The basis of the Warsaw Pact is in ideological disagreements, in the same manner that the Japanese clause would have deemed unacceptable. Therefore, they wouldn't have happened, and if any of them did, it would have caused a much more monumental (and likely positive!) change in the politics of these nations than what we currently see.

Who else went to Cyprus after seeing this?
"making polyglot and diverse Cyprus into a nation would conflict with the foundational premises of nationalism" Cyprus isn't minorities fighting for rule Turkish Cypriots were always minorities and especially before so the war. You spend the whole video talking about Cyprus's significance to Greek Paganism and Christianity and Byzantine influences but then turn around and imply that Greek Cypriots who believe Cyprus is ethnically Greek are irrational and believing so is evidently pointless. Cyprus saw its first true outside influence and interaction with the ancient Greek Minoans and has organically identified with Byzantine orthodox Christianity and has maintained its mostly Greek language and culture even after all the empires that have come through and have tried to adapt us into their own image, including the Ottoman empire. Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots genetically have the same phenotypes because a vast majority of Greek Cypriots chose to integrate into Ottoman rule, which taxed and enabled the mistreatment of Christians, and even then after 258 years of ottoman rule the majority population never ceased to identify with its Greek identity. Racially i will agree we are very ambiguous, you can find Cypriots ranging from Nordic looking all the way to middle eastern, no doubt a byproduct of all the cultures that have passed by and have left their genetics here. But even then, a majority of these people that came to Cyprus choose to integrate into a Greek culture and language.
