- TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer furiously reacts after head of campaigns at the Taxpayers Alliance Elliot Keck tells her councils supposedly spend £350,000 on an awards ceremony in London.
It comes after England's local authorities will receive a £600m funding boost from the government following recent warnings of further bankruptcies.
Communities Secretary Michael Gove said they would share £500m to help fund children's and adult social care.
In December, he announced a total of £64bn would be made available to councils for 2024-25 but earlier this week, more than 40 Tory MPs signed a letter urging Rishi Sunak to increase that to avert major cuts.

As an ex-council employee. I can tell you things are 100 times worse than you could imagine.

As someone who did a lot of work and supplied kit to a council, I can tell you that they are corrupt as hell. My company eventually lost to the good old nepotism to a company that belonged to the uncle of the new procurement manager. They paid way over the odds for inferior-quality goods. Appalling.
Ditto, as an ex council Principle Officer of 21 years in a North London Council, people don't know the half of it!
@@kenhickford6581 it's become a massive quango, and we got 22 unitary authorities in Wales, all sucking off the teat, we had a small borough council when I was younger, they were effective and everything was being put back into the community, it's appalling the way things are going.
27 years working for a large Council and learnt only one thing. Year on year the workload increases and funding decreases.

I found out that the council worker’s pension are very generous, a large amount of community charge goes towards it, no wonder the money has run out.

Look at the "council manager's". Unelected council leaders who control the entire operating system of the council. Basically, sidestepping councilors. Then look at wages of said managers. Then look at their credentials. The one that pops up is "c0mm0n perpes", misspelled for censorship reasons.
They're wasting millions, so to be honest, they all should be investigated and every penny should be accounted for.
How on earth can they be just given more millions without some sort of check on what the hell they're doing with that money.

Every penny is accounted for - they are legally required to produce audited accounts based on IFRS.
They may well be misspending money, but it is accounted for - you can look at their published accounts online.

£650m Thurrock council invested in a solar company and lost the lot, no council officer was held accountable and the council went bankrupt, the council officers kept their jobs and pensions etc.
Believe it or not Cornwall council lent them 20 million and have no chance of getting that money back, that's how stupid CC is.

@@steveturner6770 correct, we had a small urban council, when it got taken on over it had £800,000 in the kitty, that was the 70s, it was efficient, roads resurfaced regular, drains cleaned, rat control, park keepers, regular bin collection, and we had ashes then, now we have a ghost town, and we never see our council.
A similar situation when it comes to big charities. They'd rather leave their money in high interest investments rather than spend it where it's needed.

How can Reading council be granted 23 million for new bus lanes when we apparently do not have money?
I thought reading bus service was pretty good? Only occasionally use it and it does what I ask of it.

Those lovely edifices of TOWN HALLS built at public expense. Now being sold on the cheap to be converted into luxury "FLATS" for large profits while the public are being forced into future slums of high cost low quality boxes with a lifetime of debt and management charges. Well the Rhondda Borough Council always has millions left over every year, money that they refused to spend on the people who are in their control. Instead, they give themselves ridiculous rises, cut services, and then keep the millions that they didn't spend on the people so that they can spend it in the last three months on needless and pointless roadworks. Every single year, as soon as January comes along they begin to spring up everywhere, and I mean everywhere. They then spread like a rash. In April, when they get the new money from the central gov, they will suddenly stop - having shown how much they have spent in the previous year.

The biggest shock I had was when it was revealed that many Councils were investing money in offshore bank accounts that were offering more appreciable Interest rates than the banks in this Country!! Are these assets revealed or show up when they claim they’re going bankrupt?!!
I can remember when I shared a idea with a council and they said we don’t have the money to do it. I did send a very snotty email saying they are liars!. I see and hear “we have no money however we can build a posh new crematorium” when there is three already”.

I know a lady who worked in the finance department in my local council, she said the amounts of taxpayers money UTTERLY SQUANDERED will make your toes curl.A lot of the council managers have found a good place to hide and await their over inflated pensions and pay offs.
I live in Croydon where the Labour council managed to rack up £1.5b in the red. No prosecutions/jailing for this monumental mismanagement. However, in Woking, where I have a flat, the Tory led council managed an expected staggering £2.6b. Now that’s what I call mismanagement. How is it possible for councils to actually be allowed to do this before they are brought to heel?

Part of the issue is Council’s failure to collect Council Tax & Social Rents. Millions written off each year and increases for those who do pay in full. Sadly, being voted by your tribe onto Councils does not require even minimal skill in anything.

That’s not true, councils robustly pursue arrears overpayments and nonpayments. Very rarely do they write off debts owed to them.

I've had a vibration water pressure problem for months.
They've sent 3 different of there own plumbers/ heating engineers in that have no idea what the main problem is. I'm quite up on plumbing and heating and I new what the problem was.
So 3 people have got paid for no outcome. Go figure.
The last plummer knew exactly what the problem was.
Another problem. An overgrown tree. Small. 12ft high. 2 man job at best. 5 men turned up without the equipment to do the job. All got paid for doing nothing.
These are the small areas where money is getting thrown up the wall.
And as for 3 or more tenders for a job ie pricing a job. Oh the fiddling of coffers are astronomical.

Councils wouldnt be contracting half as much of this work out if they adequately initially invested in apprenticeships for the younger generation. An apprenticeship with a few years work guaranteed at the end of it would go a long way to bringing costs down in the future, And who knows,...God forbid! Be Good for the Community.

SomeONE never makes a decision in local authorities, it is always done by committee, which means no one person can be blamed or made accountable, unless of course it saves them money, then the chair usually takes the credit. I worked for Birmingham council for over a year as private contractor (btw I saved much more than it cost to hire me by simply putting some clear processes in place) and I saw first hand the money they wasted on external training (no one turned up for the courses), refitting offices with new equipment when there was stuff brand new and already bought and available are just 2 examples.

Mr Sunak we have given our council leader a pay rise to £ 270,000 a year and other council hierarchy are on £ 180,000 to £ 200,000 and we have just bought some paintings for our offices which come to £ 900,000 and its costing £ 350,000 to have the council leaders office decorated to her liking and extra cost is £ 12,000 for an ipad each. What we receive now from the government is not enough so we need more otherwise we wont be able to afford to fly first class on our fact finding missions to New Zealand and Australia Las Vegas and Morocco to name but a few.

I work in IT. I worked for Dundee City Council for 8 years. They put someone with zero experience in charge of an IT project despite my warnings. He didn't have a clue and wasted about £1,000,000 of taxpayers' money and just walked away. No accountability whatsoever.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the way councils are run in the UK. Corruption and complete lack of accountability through and through.This is obvious to everyone, everyone who works there, and every council tax payer, and has been for years. My local council has spent millions on cycle path, cycle lights, crossings etc.. that no one is using because the surface is horrible to ride on. Cyclist don't bother using the lights. Yet potholes are worse than ever and the city centre is a dump. But also just spent millions on new paving, but shops are closing at an alarming rate.
Our council, knocked a sport centre down to build a car park and also knocked a multi storey car park down to build a............sports centre.... Oh, they also had scaffolding up around the Town Hall for 3 years. They have also pedestrianised a walkway near the football ground that never had traffic on it on match days anyway. So far that's £6 million and counting, yet, the town is riddled in pot holes!! They seemed to manage the money when it was the old rates system, now they are getting far far more money coming in and can't seem to manage it !! Come March, if they have any excess, they have to waste it so that they can carry on being funded with the same amount of money...
Our council just wasted 7 million on a fekin bike lanes for miles throughout the town and surrounding areas, and I have yet to see a single cyclist using them, just to tick a bleeding green box.......
Same in our city, causing massive traffic jams, resulting in twice the petrol use for the same journey, whilst bike lanes remain empty, hardly green.
I know a council employee £48000 a year works from home and never doesmore than 2hours work a day.

The government should send in accountants and if corruption the perpetrators should be arrested…simples🙄
