Nil by Mouth is exactly what it's like to live with a violent alcoholic. When I watched it, I seemed to hear Gary Oldman's voice saying, "It's okay. I lived through it, too." I will always be grateful to him for this healing movie.
Nil By Mouth 'is' a classic and should be respected as a classic. Its not a nice film, its not pleasant, its not glamorized etc etc. But what it is, is down to earth, bloody good, honest acting that is 2nd to none. I mean, Kathy Burke was simply devine she really was. The scene where she dances in with her mum in the kitchen? mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn that was soooo touching. Watching this clip here? I must admit I did'nt know that Gary was the director so hats off to the fella for making such a brilliant film. Its just a shame we dont get more of this kind of film with this level of 'acting'!!!

Life can be so shit, that any little pleasure you get isnt little, its massive, it means something, something real, something inside. Ive never met him, dont know the guy, he owes me nothin but he's brought sunshine into my life. I owe him. Its a debt that cant be repaid. For many reasons. I couldn't agree more! Actors are givers especially Gary Oldman. We owe him a lot for all the pleasure while watching him portray every character so genuinely. Like he said in this clip he has played every emotion there is and i say he did so with great respect and responsibility to the way the character should feel and behave whether fictional or real. Its like he really knows what it feels like to be all the ppl he played throughout his career; the good guys and the bad guys although i hate categorizing it in this shallow way i know there is a lot more to each one of his roles . Growing up in London in the 70's and 80's, this movie has every person I have ever come across. One of my favorites but its more like a bloody documentary! So on the money and so good yet so sad. Someone in this thread says London isn't like this anymore but we all feel the scars from that time. God bless Gary and his genius for getting his story out there. Its not just for him but us too that lived through those times.

Fantastic film. I didn't realize Gary Oldman had written and directed it. I hope he still realizes how much the film means to people who have experienced similar people and the environment portrayed, it feels a release that someone has managed to capture those circumstances and emotions that most media and people would rather pretend do not exist or aren't important. Thank you Gary Oldman for telling many people's story.
Its a fantastic, realistic ,scary but absolutely so well acted and directed. Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke should have got academy awards or similar for their performances in Nil by Mouth. One of my favourites of all time...

This was Oldman's best film, hands-down... and he's not even in it. Not even a cameo. Now I know he finally got the long-deserved Oscar for THE DARKEST HOUR. He also won a lot of other things for it, including the BAFTA. He already had won the BAFTA for his screenplay for NIL BY MOUTH. He is a highly acclaimed actor, yet still criminally underrated. He deserves to be one of Hollywood's leading men. I think NIL BY MOUTH is even more criminally underrated. I mean, it won BAFTA's for Best Screenplay and Best Film. But it did bomb at the box-office. Everyone should see that film. A look at what life in the South London ghetto is like. I really wish he would write and direct some more films. He's proven himself a force to be reckon with... on both sides of the camera.
One of the greatest actors.... ever... Who can claim so many different identies as him... You believe his performances, you believe in the characters he creates so you are no longer watching Gary Oldman, but the character. Few can really claim that.
Even after all his years of acting and doing various accents you can still hear traces of his saath Landan accent. Fantastic film, very haunting, and uncomfortable viewing for its absolutely realistic portrayal.
Difficult movie, it made me feel so bad for the women that were powerless to Ray. But thats the point of it, its a movie I will never forget and everyone should see it.

I loved Nil By Mouth. It's real and that's what I want to see up on the screen, my life and others' lives reflected before me. Not another billion dollar budget, 2 hour advertising promo for the next marketable plastic toy.
Nil by Mouth is so amazing because it doesn't seem like a movie to me. It plays out like a documentary about addiction, it's like watching real life. More movies need to be made like this because it could inspire people in all forms of art to help educate addicts and most importantly let addicts know they are not alone.

So spot on Gary,thanks for the whole of this,it's my life story, a functional addict.It is a horrible thing to bring up a young family being an addict while hating on yourself every day ,seeking an out from life's way it treats people who wonder what is going on in your life when you can't get a job and the job centre is to cover over a facade that there is job's in the first place, I must have done about half a million on kit no problem, makes you feel sick.
For me the measure of an actor is whether their personality, demeanor and characteristics remain contiguous across varying roles. After observing Mr. Oldman here speak and move as himself, I realised that no role I've ever seen him perform in reflects in any way the traits of the man himself. Likewise it naturally follows then that his film 'Nil By Mouth' driven by the purity of his honest desire to see a certain story expressed would thus eventuate as a social document, accurately representing lives that few survive and even less a number well equipped to explain succinctly. It's value as a piece of cinema is easily determined through the comments of others who've connected with its content on an emotional level because they can relate to what it portrays through their lived experience also. In my opinion Nil By Mouth is one of the most valuable pieces of socially documenting, Anglo based historic 'fiction' created, because its story is propelled by an honesty as complete as the inescapable brutality of the maze-like circumstances which spawned it, whilst offering through that bleak representation of a final, falling tear drop, its own existence as a film standing representative as a beacon of hope that throughout all within there is a chance to reach a point of triumph.

Unfortunately that statement sums up the movie industry for the past two decades, if not longer. (There has been a small independent niche of quality work, may it continue.)

Nil by mouth is closer to real life in parts of South London than Reservoir dogs is in terms of portraying American gangsters but there is still more skills shown by Tarantino as a director in Dogs than was shown by Oldman in Nil by Mouth which could be a bit overwrought at times.
