I watched Sexy Beast on TV in 2005, and it took me 20 minutes to realise that it was actually Ben Kingsley playing Don Logan....that's how good his performance is/was.
A shame Kingsley couldn't find much to say about his outstanding colleagues in 'Sexy Beast'. Winstone was superb - they all were. McShane was absolutely terrifying.
I have seen this movie just 2 days back, acting of Sir Ben in this movie keeps you on your toes… I believe he’s more intimidating than Christoph Waltz’s Hans Landa of Inglorious Basterds
After multiple viewings it's Teddy who is the scariest out of the two but Don's hurricane personality and character is what makes the movie so watchable ( after watching few times Don is more like an angry Toddler who even his associates back in London think he's unbearable to be around ( Teddy at the end stating if he gave a solitary fuck about Don then maybe he would have killed Gal but he didn't )
As good as Kingsley is in this film, McShane is even better and his character is far more terrifying. The scene when he speaks to Gal in the Restaurant , just walks in and starts grilling him, no hello, just straight to business, and the whole time giving him 1000 yard stare combined with a warm smile. If Don was Chaos, Teddy is the Devil himself, Don is child's play compared to Teddy.
That’s why they called him ‘Mr Black Magic himself’. And part of his black magic was to intuit what happened to Don. Those flashbacks to Don’s end are structured so as to coincide with Teddy working the puzzle out. Phenomenal writing.
I have met people like Don Logan and I have been on the receiving end of that verbal violence and intimidatory behaviour. Ben Kingsley absolutely nails it. He is no longer Kingsley in that scene he looks completely different. Great performance.
I think Ben Kingsley flourishes in interviews like this that are deep and profound he seems to get cross and the silly questions I don`t blame him, sometimes the journalists can impolite too
Charlie Rose brings intelligence to his questions and allows time for the guest to complete thoughts and express them fully. He is not pushing for three fluff questions and cut to commercial. Dick Cavett was the same and is also sorely missed.
Immense, terrific performance from Kingsley, what more can I say that hasn’t already been said… this was a Good interview, but I wish Charlie had asked him more about the director Jonathan Glazer and his fellow actors like Ray Winstone…
The thing with the code is Gal's terrified of going back inside, he says he's already done 9.5 years in prison at dinner with everybody earlier in the film. There's always a risk. For him he's retired and he's not going to risk all he has for Don or anybody else. He's achieved his dream. But he doesn't count on the fact that that life claims you, once you're in, it's very hard to get out. Also alluded to by the darker pasts of the two wives in the film, etc. Almost all of them are running from that, and of course Don knows that and has the goods on all of them anyway.
It’s almost as if Don wants Gal to do the job so badly just because he’s jealous of Gal’s happiness. I think Don is perhaps miserable and wants everyone else to feel as he does.
"It's very far from too sudden....preparation preparation preparation" Just watched the DVD again last night, finally. Better every time I see it. I'm assuming Teddy Bass always planned to get rid of the bank manager, Harry, on first viewing I wasn't sure in 2001. He almost gives Gal a look after he does it like he had to shoot Harry due to Gal's f up with getting rid of Don, but maybe not he's just messing with his head, or his look says "this almost was you."
People forget that Sir Kingsley played himself in 'The Sopranos'. Probably one of, if not THE GREATEST Television series ever produced. Only a Bad Mtherfker plays HIMSELF on 'The Sopranos.'
He played don Logan a pure psychopath in sexy beast. The devil himself. A simply brilliant performance which makes Joe pesci's character in goodfellas look like a choirboy.
I don’t agree. Psychopaths don’t have feelings and Don’s anger came from feeling something he couldn’t understand (his unrequited love for Jackie). He was a human monster.
Don Logan is the most incredible shift an actor has ever made imo. Don't forget, Kinsley has never done ANYTHING like this before, and hasn't since. Most actors will use some aspects of their personality to channel the characters they play. Kingsley as Don Logan almost seems like a possession....there is ZERO hint of the actor's natural self in him.
The measure of the man's acting ability, is to compare two diametrically opposed roles..Ghandi and Logan. Both, utterly compelling...and utterly different.
I have always felt that Gandhi and Don Logan weren't very different from each other. Both were trying to convince some English folks to leave a foreign land and go back home. Both tried different kinds of pressure tactics and persuasion methods. Both lost their lives for their cause. Both eventually succeeded...(sort of).
definitly. i am still laughing about his role as a real annoying, but funny psychopath. watch ''i kill you'' after this movie, it's like his past then as a killer and now alcoholic.
The interviewer laughs but I’ve been around real life Dons and they make you feel worthless like a piece of s**t on their shoes. Always present a threat of violence that you’ve seen them do to others. Horrible and terrifying to be around. No joke trust me.
Don Logan Was Very Intimidating he was a Paranoid Psychopathic Maniac who was a Psychotic Gangster Sexy Beast Was a Cool Movie! Ben Kingsley is a Cool Actor! 😎👍
Bendhi Kingsley spends the entire half-hour of this interview worshipping his own talent and completely ignoring the contributions of others. Has there ever been a more self-regarding actor?
Every well known actor is in one sense overrated. Ben Kingsley is a wonderful actor. However, there are many unknown wonderful actors. So yes he is a great performer, but amazing dramatists are not quite as rare as some think.
You may as well of just said he got the job done cus he was asked to, a mediocre challenge for a mediocre ten a penny actor nothing special or too difficult to achieve providing acting experience is a genuine claim on your c.v. From Asia to Bermondsey and back please cabbie.👍 oh and keep the change!
Kingsley on Ghandi and his disgust of colonialism as racism yet as a lefty just as likely to support open borders which in effect is another form of colonialism
On one hand you've got Ben Kingsley who is so devoted to the craft, he's in love with himself, on the other you've got Marlon Brando who diminished his profession(rightly so) and was also great on screen.
Don Logan is my muse. I’ve been in character living as Don Logan since 2005. I’m a 6 foot 4 cage fighter. Bare knuckle. 15 stone of solid muscle. Not a pound of fat. Anyone looks at me sideways, I put them to sleep.
Fantastic interview Throughout
And ironically possibly his best.
@@christpower5402 why ironically?

Today I finally watched "Sexy Beast", and witnessed one of the best Villain performances of all time. My God, what a range.
Yes
Had 'Don Logan' been Kingsley's only acting role he ever performed, he would still go down in the annuls of history as an acting legend!
*anals
This performance absolutely TERRIFIED me. What an actor Ben Kingsley is!!!
Interviews like this are painfully missing from our present culture.
Yeah people don’t have the mental capacity and focus to watch an actor do an interview anymore without them eating spicy chicken wings in the process.
as are good movies in general
There are some podcasts out there. The BFI one for example @@PaulTraces
Sir Ben was absolutely amazing in SEXY BEAST, a very criminally underrated film. My friend and I often quote him as Don Logan
Genius🎉🎉🎉🎉.....one of my fave movies....Ben is astonishing. I can watch it over and over....no-one could play Don Logan with such chilling menace.
Can't help but repeat the Don Logan line whenever I change my shirt.

One of the most intimidating performances I've ever seen. Kingsley is a genius !
Kingsley’ most underrated role.
Don Logan is the best performance I've ever seen 👏
The people that love it really do it has a cult following
He got an Oscar nomination for it. But know what you mean.
@Sharks ermmmm. There was one of the blockbuster out in same year. Ermm….Jim Broadbent for Iris
Underrated? It's probably his best known after Ghandi.
One of Britain's best. Phenomenal Artist!

Mr Black Magic himself
Has Ian McShane played the Devil yet?
As a North london born and bred, man, who has spent his whole life in this adversity, this performance is beyond genius.
Agreed mate
Ben is such an articulated ,intelligent person and actor , his performance i Sexy Beast as the menacing ,nasty Don Logan is nothing short of brilliant

Your welcome, Thanks to Charlie Rose & Ben Kingsley.

Love how Kingsley talks about himself in the third person.
As good as Kingsley is in this film, McShane is even better and his character is far more terrifying. What a MENSCH Kingsley is... absolutely lovely!
Arguably one of the most compelling characters ever put down on cinema screen.

All the cast were brilliant 👏
Yeah Ray Winstone did some excellent work in Sexy Beast for fucking sure!
What a great interviewer
when i see Ben i'm scared Don will come out, fantastic film & performance
I read Don as on a mission to bring Gal back. Not bringing him back was not an option.
He wasn't asking him, he was telling him.
Charlie Rose's fingernail would be better at interviewing than the very, very smartest host working today.
