I'd forgotten how much Charlie Rose irritates me. He pushes his own point and tries to score points with the person he's interviewing, rather than just exploring the subject or the person he's interviewing. I've always found that annoying as hell.
Imagine if people of significant talent and valued bodies of work would even remotely acknowledge comments of the contrary from those with experience of the contrary......
Charlie Rose is so insufferable. He asks Tommy a question, and when Tommy answers, Rose says "Exactly." As if Charlie was the teacher giving a test and the audience needs Charlie to verify that Tommy's opinion is correct, because Charlie is the authority on everything. And when Tommy says he knows the author who wrote the book and has read all of his books, Charlie has to immediately say he knew that. Charlie can't subordinate himself to an interview subject, no matter who it is. I'm glad he got what was coming to him.
First time I saw Tommy Lee Jones was in Coal Miner's Daughter I haven't seen all of his films but some was impressed with his intensity his demeanor and I'm not surprised that he's going into directing and screenwriting and I definitely am looking forward to seeing No Country for Old Men
Again I am thankful that Rose is not on the air, not just for his behavior but that he was so pompous, so in love with his own voice and has such a puffed up ego that he never let his guest answer, never heard what they were saying. Compare that to Off Camera with Sam Jones where he let the guests talk.
I would venture to say Tommy Lee is the most no nonsense actor in Hollywood. His expressions at award shows are priceless. Most of which I agree with when it involves the weak to the point of embarrassing jokes written for presenters.

"Islands in the Stream" has already been made into a movie, starring George C. Scott as "Thomas Hudson," the painter. The book contains some of Hemingway's best writing, in my opinion, especially about family and other human relationships. Edit: Released in 1977.

Around 14:35, Rose asks Jones “What question is he asking at the end?” I couldn’t make out the last couple words of Jones answer...”To what extent has the world overwhelmed us.....? What were those last couple words of Jones answer?
As a fellow Texan the Sheriff character Mr Jones plays makes perfect sense to me All the elements of the movie are very real today that most people can directly relate to in one form or Another..
At the end. He led him perfectly with his ramblings… I wish he would have asked at the Rene something to the effect of “and what is your reflection on the journey/ or what would you say looking back?”
It's because the whole world has been hypnotized by "the box" ever since they were born. Most people have no idea, nor could they fathom living without TV, or movies, and they willingly buy whatever the person on the screen is selling. It will be the downfall of the human race. We are already seeing this. It's why Hollywood actors think they are relevant in terms of politics. They realize the power they wield, regardless of their inability to think logically.
A brilliant man, a great actor. I have learned so much and I haven't even finished the video yet. I will watch it again and my next book...NCFOM or Hemenway's last book?
Rose just can't handle someone knowing something and saying it (when answering a question) when he knows it as well. I have no idea what Jones said about the NCFOM question/meaning. Rose says "Exactly" right as Jones is answering.
Tommy Lee Jones is very humble , he’s one of the greatest, gee I am so impressed how he really do not come across as arrogant, the way he talks about Clint Eastwood’s it’s a truly sign of his genius and ways to maintain his ego grounded, so much respect for him .
It was the milk drinking scene in the trailer where the tired close to retirement sheriff realizes he is dealing with a killer whose motivations he can't understand. Brilliant.

What has happened to the "Islands in the Stream" project? I assume Tommy Lee knows that it's been done before (by George C. Scott (1977)). I've been looking forward to his take on it -- but did it get nixed at some point? I'm wondering if Tommy Lee doesn't rather dislike Rose? If so, he and I have always agreed about that. Charlie Rose: the master of the insidiously leading question . . .
Ya, I thought it was very strange that neither of them mentioned that Islands was already made into a movie starring George C. Scott. Tommy made it sound like he was going to be the first to do it.
I feel like a lot of actors in today’s society have lost that drive to please the director because ultimately that’s what it’s all about is giving the director what he wants to see, and Tommy Lee Jones is such a wonderful man
I think there was a truly philosophically important statement Mr. Jones made about being inured to what we see on TV. That goes for the Internet as well. Really smart man.
Fascinating! It's always an incredible experience to get to hear the man behind the movie talk about himself! Charlie Rose keeps it interesting and engaging! What a time, the fact that the internet allows access to stuff like this reminds me of how I initially felt as a kid first getting access to the internet. The ability to be able to access broadcasts that otherwise would have been lost to time, essentially hidden away in some inaccessible corporate archive. RUclips is the greatest god damn thing ever lol
Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall will always be my western cowboy movie Hero’s Lonesome Dove will in my mind will always be the greatest western ever made and they where the two that made it great
At the outset, I like how Tommy Lee Jones doesn't allow Charlie Rose to force him into his usual interview stencil. I had never noticed that Charlie forces a particular commentary from his guests and here Tommy Lee Jones resists the pushing into a certain narrative , thereby breaking the mold. Charlie is nothing more than a more bookish Jerry Springer tabloid journalism. Tom maintains truth, Charlie is fluff. But, in the end, interesting to hear about Jones' film project.
I still wonder why an actor of Tommy Lee Jones' caliber gets involved in the MIB franchise? Who can forget, his portrayal of Clay Shaw in "JFK", which at the time seemed to me to be strange casting, but a brilliant performance in retrospect.
You could see mr Jones’s irritation with the quality of the interviewers lines of questions. They were all obvious questions that was cringeworthy to watch. A good interview uncovers the real soul and inner thoughts of the person interviewed. The whole point of an interview is to get to know more of the person of interest. None of these questions stimulated any soulful revelation and to be fair mr Jones obviously doesn’t want to reveal anything personal. Although I think he would be a really great person to get to know he clearly values his privacy. I think that is very wise way to carry yourself especially if you’re a public person
It's quite sad, really, that people like Charlie Rose and Michael Parkinson were gifted with the job of longer form interviews, yet were not particularly skilled and didn't really become more skilled as they progressed. I don't know why, although I think it's largely because they ended up placing themselves on the same level as their subjects.
Tommy Lee deserved the Oscar for his performance in 'No Country...' His acting was so quiet and soulful. It wasn't a flashy, quirky performance. The acting here simply demanded your full attention.

BEEN A BIG FAN OF TOMMY LEE JONES FOR A LONG TIME GREAT ACTOR IN ALL HIS MOVIES !!!!! AND CHARLIE ROSE A VERY GOOD INTERVIEWER !!!!!
Brilliant actor, brilliant films. Learn from him..."yes sir."
I love that too!!
Same here... tried to rewind a couple of times but no clue. Maybe someone english speaking could help us out? :-)
Brilliant.
Happy Birthday Tommy Lee Jones, and may the Peace Be With U. From Harlingen Texas. September 15, 1946
September 15, 2019 through September 15, 3019
1. Agent K - Men In Black 1, 2, 3 1997 - 2002 - 2012
2. Chip Hazard - Small Soldiers 1998
3. Mike Roark 1997
Misleading title. The first third is about 'In the Valley of Elah', a largely overlooked film in which Jones also gives an outstanding performance.
When in the film does his character express "Blind Patriotism"? I've seen it a few times and read the book and I don't recall anything like that.
I just watched No Country for Old Men for the first time last week. Ironic that the “El Paso” scene was shot in Albuquerque!
Al Gore was his room mate at Harvard.
hahahaha - I did not know that, but he can't use that as an excuse forever. Ultimately he, as we all do, has to grow up!!

I feel like a lot of actors in today’s society have lost that drive to please the director because ultimately that’s what it’s all about is giving the director what he wants to see, and Tommy Lee Jones is such a wonderful man
I started wondering if Charlie watched the movies. He starts talking about No Country and it turns out he is talking about Elah.
He was actually discussing both films.
Your still one of my favorites, awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖 😎 👌 👏 👍
Since he did "The Park is Mine" until now, I have been very appreciative of his acting ability.
I think there was a truly philosophically important statement Mr. Jones made about being inured to what we see on TV. That goes for the Internet as well. Really smart man.
His appreciation for Mr. McCarthy is telling. Greatest American novelist.
He was great in Blown Away!
Charlie is/was my favorite interviewer. He had the respect of his subjects and was always well researched.
Loved every movie this man made! One of my favorites was his character in Blown Away with Jeff Bridges
One of my favorite movies!!!
Those ending scenes where his character talk about his dreams to his partner is is, beautiful.
Impressed-Tommy Lee Jones is a thinker!
He went to Harvard 😅of course he thinks
Oh Lord....that Texas drawl! 😍
Which is just fine...
With are they talking about? Isn't NCFOM
Love his humbleness. A consummate actor!
His face at 0:12 when Charlie mispronounces Susan Sarandon's name lmao
Wow! Is that movie that old?
Remembered him in
Soap operas where he
got his start"
Played Howard Hughes
In a TV movie,did a
Terrific job in my book!
Great answers from TLJ in spite of a bad interviewer. - PS: I do recommend THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA - TLJ directed it and starred in it
I like how he says yesir at the start. He's so humble.
I still wonder why an actor of Tommy Lee Jones' caliber gets involved in the MIB franchise?
Who can forget, his portrayal of Clay Shaw in "JFK", which at the time seemed to me to be strange casting, but a brilliant performance in retrospect.
Charlie Rose: "Susan Sar-ow-den"
Tommy's face: ...wtf???
NO! He winces at Rose's pronunciation of Charlize Theron's name.
Perhaps both - at 0:13 or so
About to comment on the same thing
You could see mr Jones’s irritation with the quality of the interviewers lines of questions. They were all obvious questions that was cringeworthy to watch. A good interview uncovers the real soul and inner thoughts of the person interviewed. The whole point of an interview is to get to know more of the person of interest. None of these questions stimulated any soulful revelation and to be fair mr Jones obviously doesn’t want to reveal anything personal. Although I think he would be a really great person to get to know he clearly values his privacy. I think that is very wise way to carry yourself especially if you’re a public person
well said.
My favorite lines? Deputy: " Well, it's a mess, ain't it, Sheriff? " Sheriff: " If it ain't, it'll do till the mess gets here. "
How about... Deputy: "But you don't believe that". Sheriff: "No, probably I don't".
What I like about him is despite his talent he is just a guy who’s clocking in for work and doesn’t dwell on his personal accomplishments.
It's quite sad, really, that people like Charlie Rose and Michael Parkinson were gifted with the job of longer form interviews, yet were not particularly skilled and didn't really become more skilled as they progressed. I don't know why, although I think it's largely because they ended up placing themselves on the same level as their subjects.
well said.
It’s called Narcissism.
