god man, the dynamic between these two was magical. Every time Norm had an appearance on any of Conan's shows through the years, he always produced the best "late-night talkshow guest interview" content anywhere, on any network, against any other late night show, period. Conan brought the best out of Norm, and their chemistry worked perfectly together. Some of Norm's best and widely known jokes (like the moth joke, which was totally improvised by Norm on the spot) came out of a Conan appearance. I just wish we had so much more content with these two guys (plus Andy, of course) together, but hey, at least we have comedy gold recorded for us to watch.
Didn't bomb at all. Norm doesn't always do jokes for the uproarious crowd laughs. The joke is, if you get norms brand of comedy, that norm thinks the silence is hilarious. He finds the non reaction funny and is entertaining himself at the crowds expense. And this becomes the joke... that awkward moment rather than the actual words/punchline. And as you follow his comedy throughout the years, you know when he's going for a genuine laugh or when he's going for awkward silence.
I love seeing Norm actually laughing at someone else. Conan's impersonation of Norm really made him laugh. Of course, he was basically laughing at himself, sooo....
He also has a pretty good frog walks into the bank joke that will rival or surpass the moth joke as soon as he perfects the embellishment that he did in the moth joke.
Conan wore him out right at the start. Hilarious. And you know Norm loved it. I always respected how Conan would cede control of the show to Norm whenever he was on. So humble.

It seems like Fordham1969 explained it well. Carson would occasionally make a yak joke, especially while doing Carnac. If you never watched any Tonight Show clips with Carson, you really should. There are some hilarious moments. If you like Norm on Conan, you should watch some Buddy Hacket clips with Johnny Carson. Always hilarious stories and jokes.
I'm sad that it took Norm dying for me watch through these clips and appreciate his style of appearing with Conan. The long, rambling jokes and stories he's almost-certainly making up on the spot to just to waste time, but it's still funny! What a treasure. Kinda reminds me of Paul Rudd always showing that same clip on his Conan appearances.

The groan-inducing stupidity of the punchline usually makes you realize how much time you just wasted on Norm's story for no good reason, and the joke's on you. That's what's great about it. Or as Andy Richter once said, "it's like you took us on a five mile hike just to look at somebody's turd!"

What a terrible loss yesterday. Nobody had any idea what he was going through till it was over. Nobody could tell a joke that was going absolutely nowhere and make it funny as hell like Norm Macdonald could. RIP Norm 1959-2021.
Norm made a craft out of telling super ancient jokes from almost 100 year before and nails them with the most perfect delivery and timing. Not what he says but when he says it. No one else had this talent where he hid his ability and let it all out at the perfect moments.
He didn't make that craft. He adopted it very well. It's a comedic technique that's been around since before Buddy Hackett. It's called a shaggy dog story. Norm was a master of them. Look it up on Wikipedia, it will explain the concept better than I can.
i'm not the jealous type, but by god I've always been jealous of the people in this audience, and I was lucky enough to go to three tapings of this show over the years. always hoping I would be there when Norm was there. 💔 would have been like hitting the jackpot.

Norm was about to explain that no matter how long he rambles during a joke, he ALWAYS ALWAYS has a GENIUS and solid punchline that makes the previous 5 minutes worthwhile and all the more hilarious.
The groan-inducing stupidity of the punchline usually makes you realize how much time you just wasted on Norm's story for no good reason, and the joke's on you. That's what's great about it. Or as Andy Richter once said, "it's like you took us on a five mile hike just to look at somebody's turd!"
Yes, In comedy and storytelling, this is called The Shaggy Dog story, Norm has this down to a precise art.

I have been binging on all Norm McDonald videos for the past 3 weeks and wanted to see him live. I had no idea he was ill. I am so sad. He was so funny. RIP

Not only was he a commutative genius, but you could feel his sweetness and his loving heart energy. The combination is unbeatable.
What a terrible loss yesterday. Nobody had any idea what he was going through till it was over. Nobody could tell a joke that was going absolutely nowhere and make it funny as hell like Norm Macdonald could. RIP Norm 1959-2021.

Conans imitation of Norms stories was absolutely hilarious.
I miss him so much, Norm was my favorite stand up along with Chappelle. And even dead he is still just as funny.
Norm made a craft out of telling super ancient jokes from almost 100 year before and nails them with the most perfect delivery and timing. Not what he says but when he says it. No one else had this talent where he hid his ability and let it all out at the perfect moments.
He didn't make that craft. He adopted it very well. It's a comedic technique that's been around since before Buddy Hackett. It's called a shaggy dog story. Norm was a master of them. Look it up on Wikipedia, it will explain the concept better than I can.

i'm not the jealous type, but by god I've always been jealous of the people in this audience, and I was lucky enough to go to three tapings of this show over the years. always hoping I would be there when Norm was there. 💔 would have been like hitting the jackpot.
