Didn't bomb at all. Norm doesn't always do jokes for the uproarious crowd laughs. The joke is, if you get norms brand of comedy, that norm thinks the silence is hilarious. He finds the non reaction funny and is entertaining himself at the crowds expense. And this becomes the joke... that awkward moment rather than the actual words/punchline. And as you follow his comedy throughout the years, you know when he's going for a genuine laugh or when he's going for awkward silence.

god man, the dynamic between these two was magical. Every time Norm had an appearance on any of Conan's shows through the years, he always produced the best "late-night talkshow guest interview" content anywhere, on any network, against any other late night show, period. Conan brought the best out of Norm, and their chemistry worked perfectly together. Some of Norm's best and widely known jokes (like the moth joke, which was totally improvised by Norm on the spot) came out of a Conan appearance. I just wish we had so much more content with these two guys (plus Andy, of course) together, but hey, at least we have comedy gold recorded for us to watch.

I met Donald Trump back around 1999 outside of a movie premiere on the upper west side. I wanted to take a photo with him but he was running late for the film, so he just went inside, and I never saw him in person again. There were dozens of stars there and so much paparazzi that I couldn't get close enough to even ask him. The only photo I got was of him going up the escalator.
Around the same time, give or take a year, I met Norm McDonald outside of the Ed Sullivan side door, which at the time was the studio for Late Night with David Letterman. Norm was also running late, and had to run inside without stopping to take a photo with fans. But I believe it was his wife who came out and said that Norm apologized that he couldn't stop to take photos, but that would come back out after the taping to do so. And he was true to his word. I was with my friend Dave and about three of his friends, and Norm came out some hours later and took a bunch of pics with us and was joking around and made sure everyone was happy. He pretended to fall over on us and was singing this funny song.
Over the span of about three years , say 98 - 01, I met literally hundreds of celebrities as I was into collecting autographs and taking photos with them, (and if I were lucky I'd get to have a conversation with them), but Norm was definitely in the top 1% of the nicest celebrities I'd met. He certainly did not have to come back outside and stop to take photos with fans (the crowd that stuck around numbered about 10 people in total), but he liked and appreciated his fans and had such humility in person, which really added to his greatness, and I am forever grateful that I got to meet him, even if it was only for about six or seven minutes.
