I hope they talk about Norm’s departure. They only fired Downey for the OJ jokes, when they told Norm out of absolute loyalty and gratitude for bringing him on the show said “if Jim goes I go”, unfortunately he didn’t have enough pull and they said “fine”. Norm kept it a secret from Jim and everyone until a few years ago. Ironically they brought Jim back to the show later on.
Tina Fey is incorrect in stating that her friend Seth Meyers coined the term “clapter” (Reader’s Digest interview, April 2008). It was actually coined by Amanda Filipacchi in her 1993 novel Nude Men, in which it is used many times. Clapter is the grammatical equivalent of laughter, but for clapping. It also has a connotation of being a combination of clapping and laughter. It is used to describe the enthusiastic response to the avant-garde magician Laura who entertains her audience with “tricks” that require no actual magic but do demand an elevated level of sophistication on the part of the viewer in order to be appreciated. Example: on page 179 of the Penguin paperback edition: “When Laura takes a Kleenex out of her pocket and wipes her forehead with it, everyone roars with clapter.”
Jim Downey is possibly my favorite comedic mind of all time. Everything he touched turned to pure comedy gold, and his relationship with Norm proves it.

I miss Norm a lot. One of the funniest people ever. I don't know why his full youtube shows aren't up. They were brilliant.
I love how much he has true friendship with Norm. I miss Norm so much
I remember seeing "Careful with that, that's my lucky stabbin' hat" when it aired and that has always stuck with me as one of the funniest things I have seen on tv, outside of the circumstances
Conan REALLY channeled Norm when he stared directly into the camera as Norm would do
Totally, he did that ever so subtle nod to to the viewer exactly like him.
Man, I would have given anything to be a fly on the wall in a room with Norm and Jim. Two of the most brilliant comedic minds ever.
Jim smiled, ''That's what I meant. It'll have a punk rock ethos''. ''I said no singing god damn it!'' Read Norm's book for Norm's great take on this.
It makes my heart smile to see all the love for Norm. Before he passed I thought I was the only one who loved him this much.
Jim and Norm sounded like an amazing team.
That was surprisingly easy to watch. Thanks Jim Downey for the stories on Norm.
Listening to them dissecting the jokes is such a rare glimpse behind the curtain, this is absolutely one of my favorite episodes!
Downey is a bona fide legend. Damn I miss Norm so much..
I could watch them talk about Norm jokes forever. RIP Norm.
Jim Downey is possibly my favorite comedic mind of all time. Everything he touched turned to pure comedy gold, and his relationship with Norm proves it.
SNL didnt really want to fire Norm they wanted to fire Jim Downey, but Norm said if he goes I go. True friend and never brought that up in interviews he was a real class act.
I loved that, long after people stopped talking about OJ, Norm kept going. Ruthless and relentless. Loved it.
The irony of Seth myers coining “claughter”..
I'm so glad Jim Downing came out with the story about he and Norm's exit from SNL. Norm was not fired, he quit because they were firing his friend. RIP
Explaining a joke doesn’t always ruin it; sometimes it makes it funnier
Norm was doing Weekend Update when i was in high school. A lot of my friends would record SNL to watch later. Only one of my friends loved Norm besides me. We adored his style. Me and that friend are still bros....not sure what happened to the rest of the crew
Norm was so great because he reveled in the audiences awkwardness. The joke was never on him. The audience or the host was in pain while Norm just smiled. The Penthouse joke I will remember until the day I die.😂😂😂
This man is brilliant!!! I love hearing Jim and Conan break down classic jokes, and Conan's analysis of Norm's delivery. Please have Jim back!
The one time explaining the joke is even better.
Thank you for this conversation, Conan- and thank you, Norm, for being who you were.
more than any other comedian I've ever seen, Norm really did not care if a joke bombed. It only made him stronger
