If we're being honest, Pacino was not the right choice for Carlito. And I'm NOT saying they needed to cast a Puerto Rican actor, but an actor who can do a Latino NY accent correctly would've made this somewhat decent. He got away with Scarface because of the writing and supporting cast. Sean Penn's (mainly) performance along with Leguizamo and Mortensen allowed this movie to float. Barely.
@djaceofpentacles I used to think the same thing about the accent but I met some old school Puerto Rican dudes from way uptown and they sounded kind of like Carlito. Not EXACTLY like him but it's not as off as I always thought.
He probably didn't fully understand it himself like when he knew tossing him out was gonna come back on him. He was still finding that way to go straight, making mistakes along the way. Obviously handled this one all wrong.
@@Sm7m7 i think it's also because from the getgo, Carlito stablished that he wants nothing..... NOTHING to do with those guys anymore, and tried to stay clean as long as he could... and he knew very well that Benny was trying to connect with him
Worked at a restaurant in the 90s where the owner had a gambling problem. One day all staff were called to a meeting. This short italian joe pesci looking guy introduced himself as the new owner. He stated that if anyone was caught stealing he wouldn’t go to the police. Afterwards in the kitchen he came in and announced our new dishwasher was the former owner.
@ yea and after that when I deposited my paycheque the bank said it was no good. When I asked the new boss he questioned what bank and not to use it instead use the bank he does. This bank was in another city 15 min drive away. I had to bring my cheque to that bank then ask for a specific woman. She’d take the cheque then give me cash.
@@a5teroth i think it was pretty much like what they did to gambling junkies in Sopranos & Goodfellas. The previous owner was a drunk gambling junkie but he was a nice guy. Watching him do dishes & having to plunge the customers clogged toilets I felt bad for him.
This movie is to Scarface what Casino is to Goodfellas. Scarface and Goodfellas get all the praise meanwhile Casino and Carlitos Way, same directors and cast, are the superior movies
What a great scene. Visually, writing, and acting It shows where Carlito went wrong. He was not a very wise gangster at the end of it all. Maybe just a couple steps above Scarface This one scene shows both of his killers whom he underestimated them both He got a low level guy who was more loyal to money and didn’t really have his back to be his bodyguard. And then he let his ego get in the way with a low level ambitious gangster and insulted him by giving him the brush off in front of his girls He should have been more respectful with Benny and he should have talked to him more humbly. But if he did then we wouldn’t have a great movie would we It shows how Carlito got taken down by not fully leaving the environment from his old life. In the end his past street fame and not being wise with how he treated people is what contributed to his death
Yeah, he was stupid with the Benny situation. Just say thank you, and give him a pat on the shoulder. Instead he disrespects him openly in front of everyone and beats the crap pout of him, believing that he wouldn't do anything back.
Carlito should have played along with Benny and not disrespected him like that. benny had nothing but respect for carlito. people who get disrespected will hold that grudge and if it´s the wrong person he will come after you
Two groups of kids on the subway. Italians and Puerto Ricans and we got into a friendly fight about who was better. "But we have Roberto Clemente". "But we have Robert Deniro". Then one Spanish kid says "We have Al Pacino". We said" Wooooooooh! He's Italian!" He looked at his friends in confusion and they shook their heads and said "Yeah, he's Italian". Lol. Fight over.
@@insuchaway You can look it up in almost any Ranking and Scarface will always be above Carlito's Way. So that "it's a fact”, I'm not convinced xD. For me Scarface is a more transcendental film, due to the fact that it is well placed around some historical events. The characters have more depth because of its backgrounds and have a longer run throughout the film. By comparison, Carlito's Way would be a great episode of a series in front of Scarface, a film not only solid but epic too.

The voice cadence Pacino uses in this movie is way too similar to Scent of a Woman. It's almost like that character's full name is Lt Colonel Frank Carlito Slade.
Underrated Al Pacino movie and performance everybody talks about Godfather and Scarface rarely do they mention this gem
I wouldn't say it's underrated (you can if you like, sure) but as far I'm concerned it's a highly regarded film and a critical success.

Did Leguiziamo improvise that "JP morgan of the smack business" line?😂 The smile from Pacino was like wtf
Pacino's beard should have won an Academy Award 😅
I think he was the best looking in his life in this movie. John L. (Last name?)
Was great in this one too.
Strangely he didn’t appear as the sexiest man alive magazine covers
One of Pacino's best movies. Right up there with Scarface.
Both Directed by The Great Director Brian DePalma .
never understood why Carlito had problem with Benny from the getgo. He did nothing but treat him with respect.
I think it was because he reminded him of himself. The same young, brash, ambitious man that gets into the very trouble he is now trying to escape.
cause he HAS no self respect, doesnt give a fuck about anything and thinks he is the shit.

True. He handled that situation so poorly with hkm.

You can tell just by his body language in this scene. Great acting by AL Pacino.

One of the greatest movies ever made, fantastic performance by AP but Sean Penn was outstanding.
Oh, and what a soundtrack, EPIC!!!!

With everything Carlito was building this scene is where he screwed up big time.
