How to Replace a Honda Civic Thermostat! | Easy DIY Tutorial

- In today's video, my Honda Civic Project Car has a stuck-open thermostat! This causes the engine to run too cold and not allow it to get to proper operating temps. So in this Civic vlog, I show you how to easily locate and replace a Honda Civic thermostat as well as burp the coolant system. Short, sweet, and somewhat to the point. Enjoy!
While there is MANY videos on how to replace and install a Honda Civic thermostat, I thought it would be good to document this on the channel! A good old fashioned Civic vlog where (mostly) everything goes according to plan. The thermostat is one of the few things that has failed on this car over the years. With a recent cold snap, my temp gauge was cooling as I was driving. Usually meaning that the thermostat is in a stuck-open state.
This job can easily be done with a couple 10mm sockets and a little bit of time. I recommend spraying and soaking the thermostat housing bolts with PB blaster (days or hours) prior to removing them. After the install, I burped the cooping system for a half hour to make sure there was no air or hot spots in the lines. Overall, a very simple job that anyone can do with the right parts and tools.
Hopefully you enjoyed the video, learned something new, or just liked seeing a Civic video!

The detail and care you put into your videos does not go unnoticed. Great video as usual!
Finally another Civic vlog
Hi Anthony. Great informative, step by step on the Civic coolant and thermostat swap. Both your Honda's looking very clean..👍🏼
Glad to see you're able to still get the OEM thermostats for these.
This is such a chill video
Thanks for watching!
Let's Gooo hope you have a awesome weekend Ant!!!💯
Thanks fam! You too!
Loved the video! I actually enjoy watching the easy maintenance things. Every civic owner should know about the full hood prop!
Full prop! Always!
I'm never even using the normal one. Always fully up 😂
Thank you for this. Hopefully mine goes this easy! Also the music fallout uses at 8:50 was throwing me off hard lol
Love the civic videos as always, you should do an aftermarket radiator at some point it’d be a cool mod to cover for the civic
I agree. Would look cool if anything!
Getting to the car maintenance early this weekend! Nice!
Thanks for watching man
Amazon has a lot of fake Honda parts. Just something to be aware of.
True! This was sealed with oem packaging and came from a verified seller. Most I can hope for
i love the civic, i cant wait to get mine❤
I hope you do!
@@ALLDAYANTHONY i didnt know you responded so cool, and i should be getting mine within a month and looking to do a similar build!!
Damn vtec crossover is pretty noticeable in the single jingle 👌🏽
hey love your honda, can you so a video on gaskets, oil pan gasket, head gasket, valve cover gasket, etc
The Kirkland sweats 😎
The best
Honda’s are very picky when it comes to thermostats. They only like and run the best with OEM Honda thermostats.
Just did this to my 2000. My thermostat was stuck open. Never fully heated up and ran really cold going downhill. Went in and out of child start mode. All works great now.
Yep! Cold weather kickstarts many thermostat replacements! Glad you got it swapped
@@ALLDAYANTHONYyou as well. Next got me is iacv and map....mines auto though so iacv is bottom of throttle body not on the back of the intake manifold. Any tips.
A couple weeks ago, the lower radiator hose popped off and I lost all my coolant, but I didn't realize this until I noticed that I wasn't getting any heat a few minutes after started the car (2000 Civic EX coupe) I drove it 9 blocks across town to get some gas, the temp gauge was at half-way up, not overheating, just a bit warmer than usual, and still no heat, really cold, 42 degree air! I opened the hood, the lower radiator hose popped off the radiator somehow, lost all my coolant! I panicked, drove it back home, luckily it was cold outside and downhill from the gas station I was at! The engine never overhrated! I eventually fixed it myself, that lower clamp was a pain in the butt to screw tight, then I wondered about my thermostat, never changed it, not giving me any issues now but wondered how much of a pain it will be for me, your video showed me how, thanks!😃
Tomorrow, Saturday morning, I'm going to change the spark plugs, cables, cap, and rotor, I have trouble starting it in the rain, runs a little rough during the rain.
Hot damn! You got lucky! Glad this video could help!
@DENNISRAMOS9665 : I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO PLEASE TAKE OFF THOSE CRAPPY "SCREW WORM CLAMPS" THOSE ARE GARBAGE YOU CAN USE THOSE LIKE ON ( AIR & FLUID TUBING/HOSES ) BUT DON'T USE THOSE ON "HEATER / COOLANT HOSES" THEY GONNA DESTROY THE RUBBER HOSE AND BREAK PLASTIC RADIATOR CONNECTION GET AND GOO BACK TO THE OEM ONE'S PLUS IN CASE YOU DID KNOW ALL "HEATER/COOLANT HOSES" ARE DESIGN AND MADE A BIT SMALL ON BOTH ENDS SO IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH FOR THE TUBING HOSES TO FIT THE BIGGEST MISTAKES THAT PEOPLE WHEN THEY HAVE AN END RIP OR HAVE A HOLE IS THEY CUT WHAT THEY CAN SAVE AND SHOVE THE HOSES BACK THINK THAT'S IS AND DONE AND THEY SOLVE THE PROBLEM THAT IS A GREAT TEMPORALLY FIX FOR LESS THEN A MONTH WHILE YOU REPLACE THAT OLD RIP HOSE BUT THE ORIGINAL CLAMPS FIT JUST RIGHT AND WHEN THE COOLANT & HOSES GET HOT THE CLAMPS EXPAND AND THEY CONSTANTLY REMOVE TO THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE & RADIATOR IF YOU DON'T WANNA BUY THEM JUST GOO TO A JUNK YARD AND TAKE THEM OFF A CAR THERE PLUS HERE'S TWO VIDEO EXPLAINING THOSE CLAMPS HAVE A LOOK BROTHER 👇🏼

Dude i had the same story, except the lower radiator hose has a leak. Smoked up at the gas station not too far from home. Luckily made it home. Temp went all the way up. Waiting for new hoses to come in. Wondering also if i should change my thermostat?
Had to do this twice on my 95 Accord and once on my 96 Integra.
i need to work on my coupe again
question. once to filled up the radiator did you need to fill up the reservoir as well?
Another day another video! It had me thinking. What are your settings on your GoPro to look like you have a mirrorless camera mounted on your head?
It’s a DJI action 3 on my head. This camera just looks that good lol
Hows the rattling on the hybrid racing shifter? Did it ever go away?
Aye let’s go!!!
First!
Great video like usual but then I noticed at 13:07 you crossed into the other driver's lane when turning... :(
My civic runs colder when i turn the heat on do you think this will fix it?
My 03 ex is always reading cold the needle doesn’t even move, do I have the same problem?
wish it that was that easy on a k series. I had to do the jank method and used some cardboard to block the rad till it warms up
Did Anthony get rid of the barn door that’s been the Bain of that garage wall 😂
I’m building a 95 civic and I’d love to ride with u one day
#AlladayAnthony when you are cruising in your Honda what are your music choices what do you drive to
I have a 2007 accord ex. My headlight is very foggy. Needs to be replaced. Any recommendations for a good set of headlights and bulbs.
Any recommendations for a good set of all season tires for a 2007 Honda Accord for everyday driving in the Houston weather.
The lower coolant hose is no heating at all which is causing for the cooling fant to not kick in. You think it might the thermostat?
Two reasons the fan is not kicking in one could be your fan switch test the fans put 12 volts to them first, if they cone on then you need to check your thermostat ince you replace it run your car until all the air is bleeded out then lower hose should be hot then the fans should kick in
If that is not happening then you may have a head gasket damage
No more grom vlogs?
What paint did you use on the valve cover?
It was powder coated. I have a video on it
After all these years your dc sports headers still look like new from when you put it in. It doesnt turn a different color or rust out?
These are the coated option. They shouldn’t ever rust
@@ALLDAYANTHONY thank you will be getting these for my d16z6 honda del sol
I have the same problem lol.
Did you order a diferent temp thermostat or just replaced it with oem
Oem replacement!
When’s the rear disk conversion coming?
I need to dust those things off. I have to get new bushings installed and then I can tackle the trailing arms
@@ALLDAYANTHONY sounds good man, keep up the good work!
My civic doesn’t blow hot air anymore it send out cold air I don’t think it’s the heater core but I checked the hoses going into the firewall and they also seemed fine idk what it could be
Heater core could be clogged or bad. When you’re driving does the inside of your windshield get hazy?
@@ALLDAYANTHONY yeah my windshield gets really foggy and wind blows but doesn’t heat up I think another factor could be the window seals are also pretty bad old Honda problems
How much coolant did you need?
I think I mention it in the video
Are you never goin got install the skunk2 manifold?
To
I will eventually, the RSX just took priority this year on the mods
@@ALLDAYANTHONY betttttt

Hmm? Haven’t been listening for a while but doesn’t your voice sound a bit different?🤔
Ejoyed the video! With the placement of the camera you can’t see sh*t of what you’re doing under the hood/bonnet but who cares? 😂 it’s always nice seeing Honda content I guess👍🏻
Really? I thought the head cam would show enough. It’s 4k, so you could zoom in
I think it’s mainly because the position of the camera is higher than your own eyes so I had a “struggle” to see where the bolts for the thermostat were at, for example. But no problem and definately no offense, enjoyed the video👍🏻
Less talking more showing
