Thank you very much, my 2011 Kia Soul was overheating and I did not know what to check for then after watching your video I did as you said and the car was hot but that hose stayed cold and never get hot then I realized that my Thermostat was stocked on CLOSE position and never OPEN to let the water coolant to flow to the Radiator. Thank you very much and may God Bless you.

great explanation, cars been overheating and i noticed a hose was leaking but i was still holding a majority of my coolant, turns out my thermostat got stuck closed. thanks so much!
I encountered an issue with my Audi A3 the other day. Basically I was pulling into a highway after about 20 minutes of driving, and I noticed that the temperature gauge started dropping from 90 degrees and eventually down to 50 degrees... While driving down a highway which makes little sense. Granted it was a cold day out at around -8 degrees celsius, but surely the ambient temperature and the draft from the high speeds couldn't possibly be enough to cool down a running engine that much can it?
@3:00 very useful!! Notes: put finger on thermostat if it stays cool, the thermostat is stuck in closed position, and not allowing coolant through. Edit*Turn on engine Leave on for five minutes

What happens often on older vehicles is the thermostat works fairly normal except it won't close up completely and thereby causes the engine to never make it to correct operating temperature that the computer is looking for. The idle stays fast because it thinks it's still warming up, it runs richer because it thinks it still warming up, and your heat is weak.
I changed coolant sensor on my son's 07 HHR now it runs so rough and gave a upstream 02 sensor 😡🙄 hate hate hate this crap dealt w a Chrysler 300M nothing but electrical/sensor after sensor was fixing to replace brain and boom timing jumped and screwed some internal crap!!
Time for horse n buggy or a tri-motorized bicycle w enclosed cabin some solar panels and batteries converter/inverter run some lights and a small heater and be done w crap!!! Lol
I’m really new starting out working on my own vehicles, I really enjoy it but get overwhelmed looking through so many articles trying to find what I’m looking for when I don’t even know where to start and this video was so informative for me, especially since I think I have a thermostat issue and this really makes me feel confident going in and making sure it’s the thermostat and not something else, so thank you so much for this!!
Having the same problem with you, best help is talking to people and READING THE SERVICE MANUAL, if you don't have a service manual for your car I'd recommend getting one, saved my ass more times than I can count, and if you can get part numbers for things write them down!
I hear that man. I wanna do more things myself. I get motivated and encouraged to do it but then when I get to it, I become overwhelmed. But videos like this are a huge help and by laying it out step by step, it’s easier to grasp!
Outside temp -10 C. After starting and idling the engine for 14 (!) minutes, the temp gauge finally shows nominal temperature. During that time the pipe gradually builds up to a comfortable level, like 40C. Never really hot. During drive the temperature keeps falling down below nominal temperature, eften after driving for 30 minutes. Suspecting a stuck open.... What do you think?
Yes, a common cause for the engine not getting up to it's full proper working tempurature can often be the thermostat stuck open. This essentially stops the coolant from being held in the engine and getting up to temp (when usually the thermostat would open). Instead, it is constantly circulating and getting coolect by the radiator and fan. Definitely worth replacing the thermostat as the cost is low and the likelihood of success is high - that's the good way around! www.paypal.me/youwrench --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Yes, that a pretty decent way to rule out a thermostat issue. I was kind of looking for a good way / tool to measure coolant flow to diagnose if the water pump is bad and not circulating coolant. Currently this is not an issue for me. But it's one component I don't have a tester to know for sure without removing and inspecting.
Try looping the heater inlet and outlet hoses together with clear vinyl hose. Run the engine and watch for flow. If you cant easily reach those, look for another small coolant hose you could insert a loop into. Stay gold
Another indicator is the temperature gauge itself. Stuck open, the temp gauge will take a very long time to rise. Stuck closed, the temp will rise to operating temp normally but then just continue to rise towards the red zone.
Thank you. I have a 2001 Chevy Tracker base model that takes 30 minutes to show proper temperature on the gauge and the reading drops back to cold a bit while the engine is in idle. Definitely a thermostat stuck open.
Upper hose gets hot few mins after starting the engine like u mentioned..buy my lower hose isnt hot..is tat normal?..cuz i have an optima k5 tat has thermostat located at the end of the lower hose..TQ~

Thank you. I never had these issues with my 99 camry but this 97 camry I am. After ther thermostat failed, I disconnected the fans from the ect to keep the engine cool till I got it fixed but now a week later after getting it fixed, the gasket failed and was leaking bad. Also i never see the gauge go up but i see the white smoke from under the hood first. Had to take the car back and the guy reinstalled a new gasket on the thermostat and did every test he could. Swore the ect was working and the fans were coming on like they should. But even now as I am sitting idling after dropping off my sister, the car started smoking again which immediately had me worried so I bypassed the switch to let the fans run to keep my car cool. The mechanic said if it does it again he will take it to Toyota himself😅 cause he even had the Toyota mechanic on the phone showing him what he was doing.
Here's a more accurate way of testing if your thermostat is working properly. Verify what the rating is on your thermostat is (195 degrees is common). Connect almost any cheap or expensive OBDII scan tool and take the car out on the highway. If the OBDII coolant temp runs up to the rating on the thermostat and stabilizes there your good to go. In one case I had a dash temp gauge that was reading 3/8 on the gauge (1/2 would be common). I wanted to know what the computer was seeing and it was reading about 10 degrees over the thermostat's rating. Dodge manuals indicate that thermostats are more likely to fail closed rather than open. I bought a NAPA thermostat. When I pulled the old thermostat (I could tell it had never been changed because the way Dodge staked it at the factory) I put both in a pan and brought it to boil. The new thermostat opened exactly at 195 degrees where the old one stayed shut. I put in the new thermostat and low and behold the OBDII coolant temp driving down the road was 195-197, a full 10 degrees cooler than the old thermostat. It's also possible to have a bad coolant temp sensor, in which case changing the thermostat would have no effect. In that case you would want to change the sensor after verifying the thermostat is working properly.
Hi from Puerto Rico! Since we in my island is very mostly hot... Can I remove the thermostat in a 2003 Nissan Murano 3.5L? By the way I did in the past in a Mitsubishi Montero Sport 1999 and it works very well.
Oh yeah? Well I'll one up your troubleshooting :D Now if you hold your upper radiator hose and your car warms up to operating temp but no red hot change... Thermostat right? But then! Bum bum bum!!! You start to drive then the coolant temperature skyrockets to hot after 30seconds of moving. Then you park the car and feel the hose and now it's red hot :o My current issue haha. Thinking it nay just be coolant being low in combination to Thermostat being bad. Gonna replace both anyway but just trying stuff out 😊
My temp gauge on the dash once the engine is warm to the straight up position and never moves from that location does that mean everything's fine? My friend try replacing a thermostat on a 2 L Volkswagen TDI engine and you'll start to pull your hair out it's such a difficult job. I'm going to try testing my TDI SportWagen with your Technique because my mechanic said that my thermostat was stuck open, I want to make sure he's not trying to drum up more business.
Hi. I did as per above video and while the engine runs my upper hose stays completely cold for about 2-3 minutes and then very GRADUALLY starts to warm up to the very hot temperature. Very Gradually. Also the lower hose always stays completely cold, even after travellying the long distance and back. Does it mean the thermostat works fine? Also would the car give the error code if the thermostat is faulty?
Hard to say without seeing it first-hand, but I assume you are testing it because you are having some tempurature issues to begin with? My initial guess based on what you mentioned would be a faulty thermostat valve which is only partially opening, hence taking so long to let the hot coolant out of the engine. This would likely cause the car to be running hot, to what degree will vary, but would show hotter than normal on the tempurature gauge. It may fluctuate. For the price of a thermostat, well worth replacing it as the most likely cause before delving deeper. My car sat for 2 years,c4 2007. When car is cold it works like it has 20bhp and if i dont have it more than 2.000rpm it drops n dies. When its hot, after 2km distance it works fine. I will try this because my mechanic has no idea what is wrong...so,me,the plumber i have to find out...
After a new water pump radiator cap and 3 new thermostats, it stayed closed again. Took it out after busting a hole in both upper and lower radiator hoses. Read through 1000s of comments against doing it. Bought myself a week till my new radiator came. After putting it in the old 1 didnt look bad at all. Found a short in a fan wire which made it look like it was working coming on sometimes then off when cooled down a bit. Now they are both running and its super cold. Guess i will reinstall that dam thermostat, just letting yall know whats up. If you have too, do it and figure it out till you get it right again. 💯🔥
Please can you advise.... If the thermostat is broken in the open position and the coolant is flowing around the engine & then through the radiator from the start, what, if any, problems could that cause? I've heard in much hotter countries (I'm in Zambia in Africa) that some people just remove the thermostat as they don't see the need for it. Thanks

For example I have fuel pressure testers to measure if the fuel pump is working / pumping pressure obviously if it's 0 psi the fuel pump is not working. But I never seen any flow inline meters to put on water pump inlet pipe or clamp on to measure flow. Is there such a tool ?

Would a stuck thermostat cause the fans to cycle. The top radiator hose never seemed to get hot or feeling water flushing through but the fans came on and stayed on. 🤷🏻♂️
The antifreeze keeps like draining all the time no leaks hoses seem fine its been looked at and I've paid over 2k to fix this issue that they somehow can't figure out evey other damn week do u think it's the thermo cap being stuck open and just draining the fluid out constantly?
Understand what you’re trying to say, but I’ve always found the car heater will tell you Heater blowing hot air at normal time after start up = water has been heated and now circulating normally
some systems are apparently operating in reverse ? it circulates in the lower part of the radiator, then go up to the radiator cap then go through the engine then to the thermostat and lopps like that has long as engine is too hot. How do we know if it's a reverse system if we don't have access to the manufacturer manual ?

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a 2009 Honda Ody. My problem is that the engine fans won't turn on. I already checked the fuses, replaced both engine coolant temp sensors and both relays. On the dashboard, the indicator is at zero when the engine is cold, when it starts to warm up it goes up to the middle, but it never goes beyond there. But using a little bluethoot scanner I see the temperature go up to 210 F and even higher. But the fans don't turn on. When I put a paper clip in place of the relays, the fans work and the temperature returns to a normal temperature (170 F) on the bluetooth scanner, but on the dash it is always in the middle. Why won't the fans turn on if I change the relays and sensors, the fans are working and not damaged. Do you think I need to replace the thermostat as well?
And if I'm not mistaken if the thermostat is stuck open your temp gauge will show cooler than normal and your heater will not blow hot as usual and be maybe lukewarm.
Yes, absolutely. If your thermostat is stuck open then the coolant is not held in the engine and will just keep circulating through the radiator, so it will not be able to get up to a proper operating temperature. So when you call for heat inside the cabin there will be no heat (or very little) to give as the coolant is not up to temperature. So if you get a combinaition of no warmth inside the cabin coupled with the temperature gauge always sitting low, then this is a good indicator of a faulty thermostat (open). Hope that helps! :-) --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! An explanation I read for my Volkswagen Touareg was that there’s an upper and lower pipe and that both should get hot, but if the upper one gets hot and the lower one doesn’t there’s a problem
Interesting! Normally the lower pipe will not be as hot as the upper because the lower is passing the cooled coolant that has just passed through the radiator back into the bottom of the engine for recirculation. Maybe it's a different system, or a system variant. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Can I do this test or know if the thermostat is bad if the heater core needs replaced as well? My heater core needs replaced, but someone told me the thermostat may need replaced as well. Is there a way of testing the thermostat while the heater core is bad?
Good video. From the video I'm presuming my thermostat might be stuck in closed position. I recently had an overheating that has me confused. Warning bell started and I saw my temp gauge pegged at max heat. Pulled over and tried adding coolant by expansion tank (on driver's side) but it barely took any. Temp still pegged. Tried removing the rad cap and saw rad was empty. Explains why motor overheated but why wouldn't the cooling system accept coolant by expansion tank. Any thoughts for me to check?

My temperature gauge in the car goes up and down as I drive it. Sometimes at a stop light, my temeprature will reach almost to the H. Could this be a symptom of a faulty thermostat?

great explanation, cars been overheating and i noticed a hose was leaking but i was still holding a majority of my coolant, turns out my thermostat got stuck closed. thanks so much!
If the thermostat stays closed could it boil over the reservoir tank?
Its easy unless u have audi a6 2.5 tdi v6...oh boy
I encountered an issue with my Audi A3 the other day.
Basically I was pulling into a highway after about 20 minutes of driving, and I noticed that the temperature gauge started dropping from 90 degrees and eventually down to 50 degrees... While driving down a highway which makes little sense.
Granted it was a cold day out at around -8 degrees celsius, but surely the ambient temperature and the draft from the high speeds couldn't possibly be enough to cool down a running engine that much can it?
@3:00 very useful!!
Notes: put finger on thermostat if it stays cool, the thermostat is stuck in closed position, and not allowing coolant through.
Edit*Turn on engine
Leave on for five minutes
Glad we could help :-)

What happens often on older vehicles is the thermostat works fairly normal except it won't close up completely and thereby causes the engine to never make it to correct operating temperature that the computer is looking for.
The idle stays fast because it thinks it's still warming up, it runs richer because it thinks it still warming up, and your heat is weak.
Change your coolant temperature sensor

Get used to it.

Definitely worth replacing the thermostat as the cost is low and the likelihood of success is high - that's the good way around! www.paypal.me/youwrench

If your pump is on its way out, you'll see the temp gauge running hot or overheat.
Try looping the heater inlet and outlet hoses together with clear vinyl hose. Run the engine and watch for flow.
If you cant easily reach those, look for another small coolant hose you could insert a loop into.
Stay gold
Yes as you indicated this actually doesn’t differentiate between thermostat issues, water pump issues and blockage in flow
Will this cause a coolant leak also
Car will start making certain noises pump might start whinging
Another indicator is the temperature gauge itself. Stuck open, the temp gauge will take a very long time to rise. Stuck closed, the temp will rise to operating temp normally but then just continue to rise towards the red zone.
Thank you, that is another way to look at it too while sitting behind the steering wheel.
Mine never moves
@@alexapexgod4643 You need a new Coolant Temperature Sending Unit sensor and a telfon tape.
In my Nissan Terrano, the upper pipe heats up but the lower one only remains, even though I cleaned the radiator, is this normal?
Thank you. I have a 2001 Chevy Tracker base model that takes 30 minutes to show proper temperature on the gauge and the reading drops back to cold a bit while the engine is in idle. Definitely a thermostat stuck open.

Oh yeah? Well I'll one up your troubleshooting :D
Now if you hold your upper radiator hose and your car warms up to operating temp but no red hot change... Thermostat right? But then! Bum bum bum!!!
You start to drive then the coolant temperature skyrockets to hot after 30seconds of moving. Then you park the car and feel the hose and now it's red hot :o
My current issue haha.
Also forgot to say I tuned the cabin fans to max and to hottest setting and the car cabin became very hot in 3 minutes
Best of luck!

Good evening Thank you for your efforts and appreciation for this information and for this valuable information about the car, Dodge Grand Caravan.
Thanks! Given a 173$ quote for thermostat replacement. Gonna see if I can figure it out myself..
Thanks
Thank you very much! This is a really good explanation and I enjoyed listening. 👍
Thank you, we appreciate that :-)

Stuck Open:
the hose feels warmer as your engine warms
Stuck close:
the hose wont warm
Normal Operation:
from cold to red hot
For example I have fuel pressure testers to measure if the fuel pump is working / pumping pressure obviously if it's 0 psi the fuel pump is not working. But I never seen any flow inline meters to put on water pump inlet pipe or clamp on to measure flow. Is there such a tool ?

Would a stuck thermostat cause the fans to cycle. The top radiator hose never seemed to get hot or feeling water flushing through but the fans came on and stayed on. 🤷🏻♂️
The antifreeze keeps like draining all the time no leaks hoses seem fine its been looked at and I've paid over 2k to fix this issue that they somehow can't figure out evey other damn week do u think it's the thermo cap being stuck open and just draining the fluid out constantly?
thank you. So what happens if the car only overheats in heavy traffic? Otherwise everything runs ok when there is no heavy traffic
Understand what you’re trying to say, but I’ve always found the car heater will tell you
Heater blowing hot air at normal time after start up = water has been heated and now circulating normally
some systems are apparently operating in reverse ? it circulates in the lower part of the radiator, then go up to the radiator cap then go through the engine then to the thermostat and lopps like that has long as engine is too hot. How do we know if it's a reverse system if we don't have access to the manufacturer manual ?
Very clear and precise. Thank you very much 👍
Top radiator hose very hot car overheating still. Bad water pump?
I don’t usually comment, but thank you. Very helpful! 🎉

My citrion c1 has the thermostat housing attached to the bottom hose
Having the same issue on my crx !!! Going to change thermostat soon hope that’s the issue
@@g35tho11 Thank you, I already did it, but the issue still there. I think something is wrong with the ECU or something else.
If you bypassed the relays its probably something out of the relays

@@YouWrench Yup. it was my thermostat..blowing hot now like new.
@@YouWrench mine is still running cold w a new thermostat. I can take off radiator cap after the car has been running for 3-4 hours
Just pop it out and put in in some boiling water.
Absolutely, that's a great way to test a thermostat for working operation. However, you do have to remove it first to do that, and this video is specifically for testing without removing the thermostat 🙂

@@YouWrench Right. Especially with newer cars that don't use disposable paper gaskets. So simple.

Great explanation. Thank you!
If your water pump isn't working, it could give you a wrong diagnosis that your thermostat is stuck closed and overheating. How would you know?
Can I do this test or know if the thermostat is bad if the heater core needs replaced as well? My heater core needs replaced, but someone told me the thermostat may need replaced as well. Is there a way of testing the thermostat while the heater core is bad?
Is priua watee pump changeing neeed thermostat replaced
Excellent video, thank for the clear advice and info.
You can also look at your cars temperature gage on the instrument panel??😢
It's called process of elimination. Your trying to find out what is making your car overheat
It's called process of elimination. Your trying to find out what is making your car overheat
Gauge doesn't move for Me.. so then what?
This would not tell you if it is the thermostat, broken water pump or blocked flow. All of these would prevent that hose from getting hot.
Sound like u need a new radiator cap. Or there is a leak in the system that has lower pressure than the expansion tank.
Awesome explanation! Thank you very much 👍
Glad we could help :-)

When either upper or lower radiator hose collapse every time the engine us on
My interior heat is like warm. I thought it was a glogged heater core
Hi, my engine is overheating after a few hours of use and it seems like the hose is slowly heating (indicating the thermostat is stuck open). Could the thermostat being stuck open cause the engine to overheat?
No but. If it's stuck open it will not overheat... but it'll sound like a plane from the radiator fans running nonstop
Good video. Love the green gloves.
Thank you, and thank you, Jesus! :-)

How about a video on why a radiator fan won't cut in and troubleshooting all the possible problems and fixes
Yes, that would be a decent video! Hmmm, we may well look at that sooner rather than later :-)

I’m having the same issue with my 99 windstar overheats but fans won’t come on even with the AC on.
Beautiful Logic and presentation.

My temperature gauge in the car goes up and down as I drive it. Sometimes at a stop light, my temeprature will reach almost to the H. Could this be a symptom of a faulty thermostat?
Get a New Thermostat and a new radiator.. It will work.. Mine was like that recently I replaced those parts it actually work well now
