    I think another key to developing a unique art style is to draw a lot from imagination. When you draw with references, and are technically skilled enough, you'll have easy solutions for every problem (and will make a drawing identical to the reference.) When you draw from imagination, wvery single decision has to be yours, not your reference's.

    • @ricebrush
      @ricebrush  9 месяцев назад +65

      Agreed. Drawing from imagination is as important as using a lot of reference

    • @Torkai
      @Torkai 9 месяцев назад +24

      Wish I could do this, but I can only “imagine” with an understanding and not images, so having a reference is a must. Though, even then I still have to constantly look back at the reference with every line i draw since i cant hold its image in my head, thats where it gets hard for me to incorporate my own style.

    • @lenoria
      @lenoria 9 месяцев назад +15

      a good practice i enjoy doing is actually doing both. first drawing with a reference, finishing your sketch. and then hide your reference and sketch and try to draw it from imagination. its a fun challenge to see how differently your brains "natural" artstyle flows.
      its like watching a warmup video on good exercising before going off the rails to have fun with your workouts.

  • @randompeep7922
    @randompeep7922 9 месяцев назад +84

    I don't know if this tip is for everyone, but i find it useful to draw random objects and observe the decision I myself like to make. Let's say I draw a stack of pancakes, There are many different ways i can draw them. I could have simple lines and colouring, i could have shaded colouring and no lineart, i could have lineart and simple shading,I could draw with sharper lines or softer lines and alot more. Then, I like to apply these things to all of my art. Hope this helps a little. I haven't really found my artstyle yet and it's very unstable, but this video helpes alot.

    If everything you do is grinding fundamentals day after day, you're going to quit art in a year. You should combine learning fundamentals with having fun and drawing your own stuff at any point of your art journey. The advice to "be patient and grind and don't experiment if you're beginner" can legit destroy people's dreams

    I love the brush syrup in the calligraphy section on procreate, it’s not perfectly round and it has a slight texture sometimes, I just really like it. The day I found it I never went back to the basic round brush. Also the hard blend brush is absolutely beautiful for no reason

  • @kalebgonzales4009

    (Painting) Stylized brush for me is for details. I’d still stick to the advice of the round brush. It helps get the flats down fast. Then I use a watercolor brush for blocking and blending.
    (Lineart) I’d use charcoal/ sketch brushes, then use inking brush but the round brush still does the job.

    Personally I have a few key “styles” that my art tends to fall to when I’m just trying to illustrate my thoughts. Then for a specific story I’ll get a solid style developing so I can easily get all of the characters to look like they belong in the same world.
    But style is kind of just inherent to being an artist. You can tell all my elementary school art was drawn by me, and you can tell when a drawing in my sketchbook was done by one of my friends.

  • @stormycatmink
    @stormycatmink 8 месяцев назад +8

    I started practicing by trying to emulate artists I like, or that had traits in their art I liked. I'd just try and draw something but using their eye shapes, or hair, or how they do poses. Was only a few weeks after showing some of my friends that they started saying 'Looks like you have your own style'. And I realized that it was now actually hard to draw a character in a different art style. I could adopt little things, but the line work would always keep drifting back to what I'd been practicing. I'd just been copying artists I liked, but in the process, it created a whole new style.
    Was kind of weird, but my style just snuck up on me.

I've been working on my style recently and did lots of experimenting, briefly study pieces I was in awe over, and trying new brushes and rendering. When I draw I see some art I like and try to mimic a art style I like and that works well I can do that but the moment I try to just draw what I like off the top of my head with out a art style in mind my art misses personality to me like I don’t really get art block anymore I get personality block there’s no interesting things about the art the colors look plane to me the line art and shading are basic but then I take out all my art supplies and get alittle funky with proportions and I end up liking it a lot but I find myself to being able to stick to just one way of lineing coloring and how I draw eyes lips and things and I don’t think I will for a while and it’s a little frustrating but also nice to know I’m not limiting myself to the first style I come up with

    Trusty SU Cream pencil for lines, sketches, its a nice texture brush.
    Lineart brush, another textured one with a different flow. I really like it for sketching and or inking. It’s light enough to build on it.
    And Ipad Pencil, one for drawing on the ipad 😂 so its not lagging. It might be textured too.

    you know that you've improved drastically at drawing anatomy, depending on the level of difficulty, if you went from barely being able to draw anything neck down, to practically redraw any reference anatomically. again, depending on the level of difficulty on said artwork. i'm that kind of artist. how i got there is a mystery, even though it was just constant practice and studying anatomy and learning the muscles and such. even though i have intellectual disability. i.e. my brain takes longer time to process information when i want to learn stuff. i.e. it takes longer time for me to learn than normal.

If you focus too heavily on perfecting the fundamentals, you will have some of the most bland but most realistic art out there. Cool if you’re going for hyper realism, not great if you’re going for an art style to make you stand out.

    I need advice on something
    I’ve been drawing for years and taking time everyday to try and get better, but nothing is working. My drawings still look the same and as bad as they did years ago and I have to trace almost everything I draw. I don’t know what to do

    As soon as you started describing “Sam” it somehow felt really personal and oddly correct to me…

    so i'm currently at year 4 grinding fundamentals like gesture drawings. the other day I was told that " you have a very nice style". in my brain I went "but I haven't started that yet?". anyway I guess it's time to start experimenting.

    Me, a Nathan, who’s kind of been rushing art, who’s drawing Naruto watching the vid right now: (a face that expresses shock so unimaginable that there’s no emoji for it)

    One thing I’ve since is that a log of those popular artists with a consistent art style also have a same face syndrome. It doesn’t bother the fame tho 🤷🏽‍♀️
