I learned how to draw bodies, how to shade, how to make your own poses, how to draw hair, how to draw clothes creases, how to ink, and how to crosshatch. Everything I learned thanks to you. All of that in manga style, because of your teachings. Hey Marcel! I've been working my way through your videos steadily and I gotta say it now - thank you SO MUCH for putting yourself and your art and your knowledge out there. I had been in a real art block (more like slump) for over a year now, didn't even sketch because I felt so bad about my art and my apparently none-existent improvement at it. Then YT recommended me your "draw any pose" tutorial and it was like a wakeup call. You have such a good way of explaining the things I struggled with - putting in perspective how much work and times it needs to get better, but never forgetting to point out that drawing first and foremost should be FUN. Your entire videos are fun, with all the jokes, the (amazing) animations, and the way you sometimes laugh about yourself. It took me only two videos to start drawing again, and I have a lot of fun now, while actually improving with the help of your tips.
So, thank you so much for that. Thanks for all the work and time you put into this.
PS: Just got your book, and it's as much fun as your videos. Nice to have a piece of that at home now. =D

And I shouldn't beat myself up for not being perfect RIGHT NOW. Or perfect at EVERYTHING. Your reminder that a portraitist's skillset is different from a cartoon artist, helped ground me; I usually draw cartoons (or cartoon-y style art), and that my IRL (as opposed to digital) pencil shading skills are like a five year old's isn't bad.

I like how you explained that concept. There’s so many instances where I’ve seen people say “If you start out drawing the wrong way then you’ll develop your skills wrong and you can’t go back,” and that can make starting to draw so intimidating.
But this makes it clear that everyone has different skills they start with, and they can work with those and then decide what other things they want to take the time to improve along the way.
There’s no one “right way” to get better at art. Anything that gets you to draw in the first place is the best practice you can get.

This month has been teaching me the same lesson over and over again. And it has been a pretty stressful one at that. But I’ll share my experience. The thing that I feel an artist should strive for is to challenge themselves. Try and do something that your not familiar with, and even if it’s bad don’t worry about it because you are doing something new. And from that you might have a new appreciation for the thing that you have tried. And the second lesson that I have learned is discipline. The ability to do things even when you don’t really feel like it. If you really want to improve your skills in a shorter amount of time, try to draw consistently. It doesn’t have to be a big draw 100 characters every day, but something like have a sketch of something new every other day. I hope this helps someone out there who is looking to improve. I know that this sounds like a no brainier but for me it only hit me this month that artist do things because it’s hard, not because it’s easy.

I really like that idea of breaking it down into skills that you have to level up individually. When drawing something new it’s easy to get stuck in the mindset of “other people are able to do it so why am I struggling if I can do so and so” when it’s just a matter of different expertise. I want to apply that sort of skill mindset next time I try drawing, and when looking at other people’s works. Also the tfs joke was mad funny

I never thought a video could make me feel THIS represented haha... Generally, I feel frustrated by not being capable of drawing girls or landscapes and I feel crappy and all... But this gives me a whole different set of ideas that I need to overcome... I never thought that I might actually need more exposure or experience to those types of drawings, I just thought I was a lacky and terrible artist. I'm no pro in this, but I do find comfort in drawing so when those moments came, I just didn't know where to go and even wanted to give up.
    Thanks, Marcel!
PS: Min 5:20 was talking to me directly hahaha

At some point more than a decade ago I stopped drawing or painting people or anything except for landscapes and architecture in watercolor to practice my coloring. At some point I started introducing idols into the landscapes to have some sort of characters. In the meantime I practiced drawing plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculptures. At some point I felt that I could combine the two skills and my very first portrait in watercolor amazed me.
Since then, I started painting more complex scenes, some better than others, but my stylization skills are still at zero as they were to begin with.

Truth is Im just not as good at drawing faces as I am with eyes. Same with hair too, I shall study even harder that I have before and to anyone else reading this, NEVER give up.

I love how you point out how obvious this actually is. But yeah, guess everyone just kinda ignores it in their art journey because of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
The realization of your own suckery is IMO an important part of growth, haven't heard of good artists who don't have "things i wish I knew as a beginner" story. Everyone screws up their own leveling.

Okay here is some tips to improve I'm probably gotta list that you have heard before or draw like a sir said.
    1. Practice the thing you're not good at, for example hands , atonomy and pose's this are the things Im not good at and I practice them and I'm getting a little better.
    2. Look at references to draw, it's not cheating it's pretty normal to the art community to look at references and learn from them
    3. Don't compare yourself with other artist, don't do that because you're just lowering you're confidence and probably having an unrealistic goals, you're not gonna get good overnight it takes time and hardwork to get where you want to be.
    4. Simplify things, just simplify things I simplify my eyes because I hate drawing eyes so I just add to lines and a circle in-between.
Okay I hope this works just keep practicing until you get what you wanted (btw I didn't watch the video so I probably listing some of the things sir said.)
