I'm 27 and i didn't had ANY major improvement since i was 21-26 (which was frustrating and painful) but for the last year my skills went up dramatically after i decided to draw only when i want and to have fun. When you don't have expectations you don't have insecurities and when you don't have insecurities you are more willing to experiment and try different things.

part of "draw what you love" also sometimes means picking and choosing which parts of the process you do and don't want to do- not every piece has to be fully rendered if you don't like shading, if you don't like doing lineart just clean up your sketch a little or even skip straight to coloring the rough sketch, stuff like that! it's good to practice those skills sometimes but you shouldn't force yourself to slog through parts of the process that you don't find fun, it's going to discourage you from drawing at all. nothing is required for a piece to be "complete"!

I think one thing that's helped to offset this is paying special attention to not just your physical improvement, but also your ability to detect what doesn't look right. Having a good eye is just as important, if not more so, than having good hands.
It's gonna feel like shit seeing all the mistakes you're making in real time (and even after you're finished, in fact ESPECIALLY after you're finished), but it'll help a lot in the long run

    • @Dancinglemon
      @Dancinglemon 7 месяцев назад +18

Yes! In fact, the most frustration and likely artblock will come from when your eye improves faster than your hands. That’s why nothing looks right. Once you level up your skills to match your eye, you take another leap up the graph of improvement.

It's so annoying that other people pushed me into this hole and now I have to dig myself out of it.
I've been told by professionals, mainly art school teachers (of the school I was attending), that I am shit at art. I am not good, I won't improve and nothing I will ever create will be art or even considered good. And I just took that as truth because I was unable to find any arguments against ist. And those people are professionals, they are teachers. They obviously know what is the truth about art, right?
So now I am here, years later, trying to convince myself that I am in fact not shit and failing miserably. And then I see videos like this and it's like, yeah, people push themselves into art block by having too high expectations. But I didn't do this to myself. And I just want to mope and complain. But that obviously does not solve the issue. I still have to fix it on my own. Because depending on other people to tell me whether or not a work of mine is good enough is not a healthy way of dealing with it.

Or having friends that make fun of your drawings and ideas. Then they don’t even show their sketchbook lmao. 😭 IMO an art teacher has to be very open minded to be an art teacher. The only reason they might push you a certain way is just the lesson they want you to learn that they’re trying to teach. Not to push you into a certain direction. Fug those teachers and other people. I hope you can get out of the hole. Lately I’ve felt like caca cause drawing my own ideas seem dumb and I always feel better drawing other peoples characters… Its also nice to know somebody just to draw goofy with where there’s no judgement it’s all for fun 😭

I was just stopping because I didn't think I could make anything good, and I would come back once I thought I was good enough. That ended up putting a lot of stress on me to somehow improve even though I wasn't drawing, and I expected myself to suddenly have my next drawing be way better than the last one. After watching this video I decided to pick up my tablet pen and just *draw*, so thank you :)

Thank you for talking about this, I've just taken up drawing after multiple tries of it since highschool, I keep hitting the same wall. I used references which was sort of detrimental to my thought process of drawing because I kept comparing the reference to my unfinished drawings and leading to me discarding them. Now I know why I'm not progressing, it's because I wasn't letting myself progress, I was focused on other people's progress instead of myself.

I've had supplies dry out and go to waste before I could use it, because I didnt think I was good enough to use it. Ultimately I had to shift my thinking. I had to see myself using the supplies in exchange for gaining experience. Materials are replaceable, but you can take your experience with you everywhere. I started drawing like crazy, coming out with good and bad pages. But every page is progress to me, so long as it's used up. And i've been improving and learning a lot :D

Yeah, this helped my nerves a bit. I've tried to draw for so long, but I keep getting frustrated and caught up in everyday life. I kept TRYING to do daily regular practice, get to the grindstone.. but I could never feel the progress enough to commit for long enough to feel any better. I'm trying to puzzle it out; I think I have some very unique mental blocks that circumvent good ways of dealing with it.
My current focus: just learn to love the process. Learn to love what I create. THEN I can start trying to add more technical learning and begin all those human figure or 101 drawing tutorials again for review. I know all these things about shadow, perspective, negative space, proportions, reference, line quality, on and on.. but learning those never improved anything. Turns out endless drawing lessons and tutorials may have been holding me back, as I became less and less able to just draw because I wanted. Drawing became exclusively a tool, for a result I can't imagine, and that.. thoroughly sabotaged the process of improvement and learning. I have been incapable of enjoying the process or drawing for any reason besides a tutorial for some time.
In fact, I don't think I even properly plateaued; I think I just didn't enjoy it even when I improved and it shut me down. The basic doodles I'm making in just a minute right now certainly feel more even and rendered than I feel they should be. I'm figuring it out. Thanks for the video; you were a pleasure to watch.

I turned 18 this year, I've been drawing for almost my whole life and recently I've been so frustrated with myself thinking negativity that I'm never going to be good enough when its to a point where art is really the only possible choice that I have in life to make a career out of and a 'stable income' so I've been very stressed and depressed lately, crying and tearing up. I'm grateful that I found your channel and decided to give it a watch, I feel a lot better knowing that there's still many people that are either older/younger than me that have at least struggled once in their time.. thanks :)

I recently joined social media after improving for a while and got discouraged when I saw other artists who were much better than me around me. I honestly felt intimidated when one artist I loved followed me after a quick chat, and I’ve been on hiatus ever since due to my fear of disappointing them. But I’m doing better now and I think as long as I’m having fun, they’ll enjoy my work, and as long as they are as well I’ll enjoy their’s! Thank you for this video, it was helpful and gave me a push in the right direction. Have a good day/night!

Im so happy I was able to break through my plateau, once you get start feeling like you're actually improving after hitting that wall, the confidence boost and the ability to draw more freely is such a good feeling. Currently 20 years old i've been drawing for the past 10-15 years but seriously practicing for the last 4 or 5 years.

One thing is for sure, drawing used to be so much fun until recently AI took over the world soaring high. Having to make art in a matter of seconds and seeing my Instagram post full of AI artists getting greater likes than other artists out there.
I am just loosing patients to draw and even pewdiepie advancing his art overnight makes me think that my decades of practicing art isn't worth sharing to world out there. It is a very tough position for me of having to lose interest in what I like to do.

This is exactly what I needed to hear tonight 😊 Thank you so much for making this beautiful video. Your voice is super soothing and I can feel a rush of motivation surging from wanting to make art because it's /fun/ to do, not because I need to reach some ever-moving goalpost of what "good" art looks like !

this is genuinely the first time i hear someone express 1:1 the struggle i am working on. the frustration instead of motivation when seeing others' art always felt like there was something wrong with me because everyone else's response to fantastic art was "wow that's so motivating!" yet i'm just sitting there, bitter and crushed. everything else was also on point. the important part is a lot of acceptance that things are as they are, knowing of the improvement process, and being kind to yourself.

Im not a visual artist, but I am a writer. This video reminds me that even if I'm not at my computer, having a notebook and writing descriptions or getting down a thought is valid engagement with the art form. I value the community and support that artists provide for each other, it's incredibly helpful and inspiring.

i dealt with this for so long because i didn't understand that i needed to learn anatomy or even how to go about doing that i even tried to quit drawing for almost 4 years but just couldn't stay away from it but doing figure drawing and observational drawing changed the way i look at art so much and helped understand it a lot more. but don't just draw the exact same thing repeatedly like i did it's extremely exhausting and doesn't really help much

This is so true, fall in love with the process not the result. Even if you do this magnificent piece you can always go back and do it again, differently, or even better than before so why fixate on something that is so short-lived and temporary? The experience of creating it, what you learned along the way, the ideas you had, that stuff is set in stone because it is your personal experience. You can't go back and change it. Someone in my art group had a really good comment for someone who was just learning how to draw and complaining about not being better at it like other members of the group. They said "imagine you are a farmer and you get upset because you can not harvest your crops after having only planted them yesterday" and it makes insanely good sense to me. Anything you deem as worthy of your time to do, is going to take time to do. If anything a plateau is your signal to push a little harder, otherwise you won't see improvement.

I always have wanted to get better at drawing, since i was young but only really started back in 2018
Today, I feel like i havent improved much and that I should leave it all, i have been trying to face the fear of drawing, the anxiety, its just unbearable I can't take it anymore, I dont even know if i like it anymore, I just wanna be happy and i have been watching these videos to try gaining motivation and the courage again but i just cant get over that fear, I feel its better to stop all together
Somtimes its better to let dreams be just that, dreams, because pursuing an impossible dream will just end up in frustation and a feeling of worthlessness

For me, the reasons why I don't enjoy drawing as much are:
    - I don't like repetitive things in general. Designing is super fun since every character is a different process, but then when it comes to making a rendered version, drawing just gets repetitive.
    - I just want results. But in general, things are so much more enjoyable when you are enjoying the journey rather than the destination.
    - In the end casually playing video games is more fun than anything. So I procrastinate.
I feel like if I can find a drawing process that I feel good with and that gives results quickly, I'd be able to enjoy drawing a huge lot more. So I've been experimenting other ways of drawing, such as drawing colored shapes first instead of the lineart. But haven't found my miracle solution yet.

4:24 real. If I spent these 5 years actually drawing consistently instead of complaining, I would have seen improvements.
5:54 Both, actually. It depends. When I'm not drawing, I feel the inspiration. When I'm watching videos like this and the creator draws this amazing piece in the background, it's rather counter intuitive.

In 2016, when I was studying Digital animation, a teacher told to my class: "never practice, never do something if you do not have the mood because the final result will just suck." When you practice or do anything with good mood, believe me you will progress and final result will be better.
One thing you can do is only practice if you have atleast 55% of your mood in favor of practice drawing. If not, do something else and while you do that another thing, sometimes repeat yourself "I could be practicing right now" and after finish that thing, practice atleaste 30 minutes.
You will always progress if you never drop drawing, it does not matter how many minutes per week you practice, you always will improve at the end.

One thing i hate about being in the art sphere, is seeing how other artists start to post about what they're doing. I always try and try my best to put myself out there. Then lo and behold, someone i know has gotten a big client, or found their dream job, or start a successful online business. I used to look up to big artists and dreamed myself being them. Now with myself trying to make a living, I feel jealous more often than happiness because relatively, im a fuckin nobody. I resulted to being more recluse to avoid confrontation. This is where im at in my journey, and I wish i can get out of it.

I’m 32 now, I’ve been drawing since I was 6, so I’ve got 26 years of experience under my belt more or less and I’ve had peaks, valleys… but worst of all I don’t like a majority of the stuff I’ve done. Some pieces I’m like “oh damn, that’s great” but they never got any traction anywhere and a lot of my work I’d rather just toss in the trash. That’s kinda where I’ve been for most of my art life, was I envious of some artists? Sure but i soon stopped caring about that and looked back at my own work and still hated it. For me too though I think it’s just an info overload that’s kept me not wanting to work on stuff but still longing to do art but then hating my work when I do it. So weird.

I find personally that setting goals for myself helps a lot, like something ill do is draw the same thing for like 3 days and look back on them and see what ive done wrong and draw it once more and see if i can improve l. This helped me learn where my weak points are and what to look up to try to help myself. I personally find it hard to improve if i dont know whats wrong to start with and honestly speaking to others doesnt help me much, i was astonished at how.much better ive gotten because i do this now

26 now, I only watch youtbe videos and draw for fun since 17yo. And I only draw when Im in the mood of drawing, sometimes only 2 artworks per year. Even though most of the time I dont practice drawing, but i do constantly save any illustration that I like for future reference/art study (90% i will just forget bout them 😂).
Every time i saw someone's better than me, I was like "hmph, u think u good? wait me in 2 months". I always set high standards/expectation to myself to push my limit and challenge whoever better than me. I always have this question when Im drawing, "I want this to look good even after 5 years, so I won't get embarrassed showing it to others." And because of this, I did spend 3-4 hours just to sketch the eyes to have just enough of the expression I want on one of my drawings. Sometimes i do feel burnt out, so i'll slack off for months. I'm literally the basement/closet art enjoyer, only draw what i like and know how good the industry pro artists are. Never been to art school or anything similar. But recently, I saw some local college/uni levels artworks. I was like "that's it? u guys pay college to draw like that?". This made me realize how far I have improved without noticing it, because I was constantly compare myself with the best of the best, not my past self. So now I feel happier, confident and proud of my improvements, currently trying to be more consistent in drawing more. Hoping i can truly be a full time illustrator. Whoever reading this, thank you for your time 😊
