    Here's the biggest issue that makes your lineart look worse than your sketches:
    Your lineart is not supposed to be you tracing your sketch. If you do that, you lose dynamicism, lost line weighting, and also carry over the imperfections of the sketch that are masked by the 'accepted messiness' of a sketch.

    • @moisesm9944
      @moisesm9944 2 года назад +431

      This. An artist I follow described the inking process as "improving" the sketch, not simply tracing it.

    BONUS TIP I'VE PICKED UP FOR DIGITAL ARTISTS! After u've done your sketch and wanna do the lineart use 2 layers (for convenience sake) on one layeru wanna start doing some of the lineart (let's say back hair lineart) using the tips in the video but then if u notice that the lines still, aren't as dinamic as they used to be in the sketch, and even tho they're clean and a bit sketchy like the video said the shape suddenly doesn't feel as pointy or whatever...USE THE LIQUIFY TOOL AND MOVE THE LINEART SLIGHTLY UNTIL IT MATCHES THE SKETCH LINES :D
    And then u will do the next part of the lineart (the bangs let's say) on the second layer, liquify it a bit until it looks good and then merge them!
    And so on

    A video on character design would really help. I’m currently drawing a manga for a lesson I’m doing in my schools japan club, and I’m trying to do 3 different 1 shot manga stories; 1. A comedy about an over worked teacher with a frequent spree of bad luck 2. A horror 1 shot based on the works of junji ito, about a small town that’s becoming infested with a hive of wasps that crawl into your skin and manipulate you into eating human flesh 3. A shonen style action/ fighting manga that’s based on medieval Europe and a detective that creates mechanical weapons and investigations to solve mysteries.
    A video on character design would greatly help me create more impressive and interesting works for this manga drawing lesson and also give me a wider amount of information to work off of for the content of the lesson

    learning the difference between how to draw a line and how to use a line and why that distinction is important has helped me a lot, building up muscle memory so my hand and arm knows how to make the mark so i can focus more on what the mark represents and what it's trying to define. it's something i had to grind at for awhile, but eventually you just start building that mental visual library and reflex so you know how to lay things out. learning to relax and just let your body do what the mind sees is kinda difficult at first but one can pick it up faster than you think with dedicated effort.

    You know what i cant believe that this is your voice.
    I mean its so interesting it feels almost to good to be true it remindes me of how voice actors for cartoons have a bunch of different voices they can do.
    Idk man point is you have an amazing voice (u_u)

    My issue (digitally) is line weight and line variation
    I like drawing with a somewhat thicker min-size, I dont enjoy the 1-pixel minimm size so I set it a bit higher in CSP
    Due to this, I also don't like drawing with a LARGE brush size, so I set it smaller around 25px
    But these two methods CANCEL eachother out, I would be drawing with a smaller size brush but a lower minimum size
    So while there IS some variation, it's barely noticeable when you zoom out, and all my lines look the same width
    I try to go in and add some artificial variation in there, but as you said; it gets tedious and I just want to get the whole thing over with
    I keep fiddling with the default brushes, ones that start small and suddenly in the middle become thick if you apply higher than normal pressure, but again; the 1px minmimum size throws me off completely
    It would be easier if I was still d oing manga-style arts with just pure thin lines, but that got bothersome real fast when I discored how easier it is if the lines are thicker, less mistakes that way...
    I know it's all practice, seeing which works and what doesn't, and adjust your work accordingly, like drawing on a larger brush for the outlines and stick to the 25px or smaller size for minor details, but that also drops out of my mind during the moment when being frustrated that it's already taking me too long thanks to my sketching taking 80% of my time

    Would it be a good idea to do the complete line art (including hatching lines, etc) before coloring, or should i use darker coloring for the "Shading line art"?

    • @namelessliberty9869
      @namelessliberty9869 Год назад

      Depends on what kind of style you're drawing, if you want it very cartoony-like you can line and shade in black, but for a softer style you can use darker colors to draw lines and shades, or black lines but colored shades for something in between. (this comment is from a month ago and you may not care about the answer anymore but oh well)

    You have great tips and advice and you break things down in a really great way. However, I wish you didn't make the inappropriate jokes and comments. Not because they bother me but it means that I can't use your videos to show my high schoolers. They are not school safe and that's a really big bummer.

    Both actually. I love seeing another artist's view on character design, but I know my inking needs improvement. The bad part is I'm a digital artist so not sure how well your techniques will work for me. Mainly because of the medium differences. So I think I will lean to the character design more first then the inking crash course.
