I’d even get this in higher education art courses! The advice we’re given when criticizing others is: 1) ask what the intention/goals of the artist and art piece are 2) ask if they want critique 3) compliment sandwich. Which ended up getting ignored because it’s a cookie cutter course and they want specific things out of you.
People are SO hateful to what they can't attain. Many grown adult think the only way to address something that makes them feel inadequate is to lash out and its just sad.
I'm personally a big one for the pencil scratching one. Maybe because I was always very guilty for drawing in class instead of paying attention lmfao 💀

i think another important thing is experimenting - it doesnt have to be sketch, lineart, colour, shade. feel free to mix things up!! use your sketch as your lineart!! colour over your lineart!! ditch the sketch and lineart all together and make your art through colour and shading alone!! the possibilities are endless!! experimentation is so so so important. it helps you figure out your favourite parts of drawing, which then develops into your own style. it helps you have fun. and the best part is - you don't ever have to stop. you can be years and years into being an artist and get brand new ideas from experimenting:) basically, arts main rule is to have fun!!
Yes!! It's very easy to get sick of drawing if you only think of it as a competition/popularity contest. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you're drawing and don't make it a chore ❤️

Ive recently been struggling with having my lineart look good, and I've been trying new lineart styles, but something ive started to do is rendering my sketch, and not bothering to make a new lineart layer (or keeping my sketch)

I’ve seen artstyles that I don’t rlly like, but since I’m a nice respectful person I like to take a moment and remember that the reason people make art is often for themself. If the person who drew this likes this style, that’s freaking awesome! People have preferences, but that doesn’t mean people should go out of their way to break people’s confidence. Be nice ppl

Also, just because someone is posting online, doesn't mean they want to make a living off of it, just a way to share art and or document your art journey.
“Nobody is hurt by you having a weird art style” honestly I really needed to hear that 😭 actually, I really needed this entire video My dream is to create a webcomic, and I’ve been attempting to for the past 3 or so years, but every time I start, I look at my work and think that my art isn’t refined enough, that my characters aren’t proportioned normal enough, that my style isn’t appealing enough or that it isn’t bearable enough to want to read a story in it. Not enough, not enough, not enough, I keep saying to myself. But if I keep asking what is “enough,” I will never EVER have confidence in my art. My style is what it is, or maybe it’ll change and be completely different as I’m developing, who cares! I think as long as I’m doing what I love, I’ll get to where I want to be naturally as I experiment. Who cares what others think, at the end of the day I’m making art and comics because I want to, not because everyone else wants me to 🔥 Thank you, Haley!
As a fellow comic-reader and aspiring comic artist, the clarity of the narrative, plot and characterisation are way more important in comics than the visual. Sure, gorgeous art can be a selling point for me to check out a comic, but if it's not clear what is going on or if it's boring I won't be reading it. Conversely, I've read stuff drawn by people who are clearly still learning to draw and it didn't diminish the enjoyment at all - it was still fun to read and it's also super inspiring to see the style evolve as the comic unfolds! So let this be another motivation to go and get your story out there!

I kept only thinking about how my art could deter/attract, and not about how many people might come and read just because the plot is interesting. I’m a writer and an artist, so it makes me feel really happy to know people out there appreciate the writing just as much! And I agree with you on the “seeing the art develop as it goes” thing, but I guess I never considered that other people don’t mind either. I feel the exact same way I'm trying to make a comic and I just want to start but i keep redoing the first page and it's like maybe I should just leave it and do the next page idk😭
Hey! I make comics too! The art teacher and I are the only ones who see them though. Haley’s point about making mistakes that turn into your style is so accurate too! I was trying to go for a more anime look when I started making my comics. One day, I randomly drew the hair on one of my characters differently than I normally did. I didn’t even notice until I looked it over. I loved it. Then, I made a mental note it how it looked, and applied a similar way of drawing hair to my other characters. Thus, my new way of drawing hair. I’m thinking of sharing my comic pages on a site called Unvale. I learned about it from Love2DrawManga.

The part about people hating someone's art style resonates with me. I had four roommates who had similar art styles to each other, and they would always compliment and hype each other's art up. Every time I showed them my art, the reception was luke-warm. Their art styles were similar to Disney and Cartoon Network styles, and mine far from that. I had to learn that my art is worth love and praise as well.

lavendertowne! at some point in the video you get a call and it shows someone's full name! i'm not sure what your boundaries are when it comes to privacy but i thought i should bring it to your attention in case you want to keep your privacy. i'd give a time stamp but i don't want to bring it more attention.
Personally, i think experimenting is hugely important to finding what style you like most. Sure, looking at art and picking what elements you like *looking* at can be inspiring, but actually drawing and trying different ways of drawing things is irreplaceable. You can point out things you like to look at all day, but it simply might not be whats actually enjoyable for you to draw. It does mean you'll probably end up with a lot of drawings that are ugly or aren't fun to draw along this journey, but its only by getting those out of the way that you'll discover what you do like, and it might not be what you expect. This might be a bit of a controversial art tip to give, but also changing your style for whatever piece of art you're doing is fine. The main downside to this would be that less people will recognize your art, which means you're essentially not very effective as a brand. Furthermore, if you do commissions, there might be confusion as to how the piece will look (For me, I've found that asking a commissioner what art of mine they want it to look like solves this problem. If you're still learning you're probably not taking commissions so this isn't a huge deal anyway though). Basically by not trying to stick to style guidelines for the art you draw, you're sacrificing brand consistency for breadth of skills. Not saying there's one of these you should prioritise over the other, but you do have a choice. As a personal anecdote, I've tried drawing more anime/manga style stuff here and there, and tbh, I just don't find it that fun. I used to watch a lot of pokemon anime as a kid and I thought that was how i wanted to draw, but over years of drawing I've come to learn I really enjoy digital painting, and clean lineart, while beautiful to look at, is a bit hard on my patience. So yeah, it can be a little daunting to try and build a style from scratch, but I think it's important to know that you don't have to decide immediately, or ever. I've been doing art professionally for about 3 years now and I still can't decide whether I prefer drawing characters with or without noses haha. I might in the future, but who knows. I'm still learning. All I know is that at the moment I don't really commit myself to one style, and I'm having so much fun with illustration. I think this video is a great example of some things you can try if you're a beginner artist. What I'd encourage to any budding illustrators is rather than picking one thing in this video to try and recreate, try as many as you can! If i watched this video when i was a teenager just starting with digital art, back when I wanted to draw just like LavenderTowne, I think it wouldve been a great push for me to stop trying to tunnel-vision myself into having my art be one specific way. TLDR; don't let your idea of what you want your art style to look like limit you. Pushing outside of your comfort zone means you're probably gonna end up with some failures here and there, but in the long run, you'll end up finding out what you really enjoy most.
I am LIVING for pencil sketch line art, I mostly work with markers and pens but I’ve recently fallen in love with colored pencils and more messy sketches, there’s so much less pressure to make clean line art!
If you don't already know about her, I'd highly recommend the work of Gretel Lusky who goes by Gretlusky online. She has such a pleasing style, and her sketchbook work (videos on RUclips and Instagram) has the rougher pencil style you were talking about! She's probably my favorite artist so I really recommend you check her out :D
Bullying and criticism are two different things. And sometimes people use "its critism!" as an excuse to bully. No one wants to get bullied not even online. And some people dont even want just critism.
You know I'm lucky cause people say my drawing are weird and ugly and then I ask "Let me see you drawing skills then." Instant regret, works everytime cause they probably know their art style isn't pretty and just spreading their insecurites on other people.
One of the best responses I've heard (and have since started using, myself) to a young/new artist lamenting not having a style is, "You do have a style. It's already in you. Your style is just the way your brain solves art problems. You find your style by drawing a LOT, drawing as much as you can, drawing anything and everything."
Y'know, I had a really funny conversation with an artist friend the other day: She complained about not being able to write as well as me, I inversely complained about not being able to draw as well as her. We both looked at each other and burst out laughing. No matter your medium, you're going to have bad days, and you're going to wish you were as good as your idols/friends. I also think the best way to explore your style, whether it be in writing or art, is to consume other media/your peers' media. Put the pen/pencil away and explore a little bit. Maybe keep a notebook/sketchbook so you can capture rough ideas you like. Style is a collection of quirks, ultimately. I have a very Blame!/Usuzume No Hate/Existentialist tilt to my writing (and my beginning drawings), and she has a very colorful and flavorful approach to her art/writing. It's ultimately a collection of your experiences and your preferences, so the best advice is to simply keep drawing and consuming the media you enjoy.
@@spam-el3ee If you're feeling lost, I've personally found it helps to look over the past 5(ish) pieces of media I have consumed, and see if there's a guiding thread or theme in them. For example, I recently reread Girl's Last Tour, Blame!, Usuzume No Hate, Berserk, Akira (Yes, the story before it became a movie), rewatched Ghost in the Shell, and started a Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough; all of these have desolate, bleak, and lonely themes to them, with a hint of hope. I also learned that I worry (a lot) about unchecked human expansion/progress, so that was fun. Seeing my friend's art, and after hearing her suggestions, I'm now moving towards things like Ghibli films, Arcane, and weirdly obscure black and white films like The Bishop's Wife.
I honestly wouldn't consider myself as an beginner artist nor a professional artist more like a In the middle artist and I never really did like my art style that much but watching you makes me a lot more comfortable and proud of my art style :)

About the part regarding bullying artists online being normalized - I found an animator whose style really highlights the eyes, making them incredibly big, oddly shaped, and incredibly expressive. Almost NO ONE had anything good to say about it, but it was so incredibly creative and such a smart way to portray differences in personality, design, etc. I can't believe that people think it's okay to bully people just because they don't find their art appealing.
I love how you also bring up how your lineart affects your coloring style! I do a pencil/scratchy style, and I struggle a lot doing coloring. I don't like to color my drawings if i don't have to, because it's a bit more difficult to change values when I shade on lineart.
11:00 to 14:40 is really important and I’m really happy to see this topic be brought up more and more by the day. A lot of artists draw to make themselves happy and keep the style true to themselves, and it hurts watching them be made fun of for “making the eyes too big” or “the body too small”, etc. every artist is always learning, and if you don’t like the way someone draws then keep scrolling 🤷♀️

This was actually so helpful for me to hear, when I was starting out I didn't know how to find out what I wanted to do with my art style, I tried mimicking my favorite artists which also included you! My style is certainly not a 1 to 1 ratio of yours but there are influences in every artist I am inspired by in my own art and it's an awesome thing to see.

I would consider myself a well seasoned artist, but recently Ive been going through an art style identity crisis where in I find myself able to draw in multiple wildly different art styles that I find appealing but cannot decide which I want to stick with. This was right on time to remind me return to some fundamentals and test out the art styles I find attractive.
Love how this is still respectful the beginner artist because I see soo man beginners get bullied online and hate that this is normalised by hiding it as critism but just saying someone's art is bad or cringe doesn't help anyone

As someone who personally has been blessed with finding my artstyle pretty quickly, keeping the same one I've had since I was 9 (stylised semi-realism, alas i still have struggles like any other artist) and I have tried exploring into other territories or having sub styles that become more realistic or stylised, I find this video interesting with how it articulates art styles and put me into a better mindset when thinking about my style !! 10/10, been watching you for years and I still love how you make your videos :3
I'm seeing this right after I perfected my artstyle lmao, something I've found that helps cell shading is adding gradients to add more dimension. one layer of my shading is exclusively done with the air brush and then the next is just a standard hard brush, the gradients truly make a difference
i just have to say: i’ve been in art school for four years in all four years have been struggling to pinpoint my style, so i tried to turn haley’s analogy for houses in the art community into an exercise (to make your own little art house that represents you in the artistic community) and it really really helped, i’d encourage other people to do the same it’s actually so fun :D

I already have my art style pretty set it but I just love watching these videos. For me it’s kind of a way I can analyze my own style, both learning and reminding myself of WHY I like the draw the way I do compared to other ways I could draw. It also helps give me ideas on how to improve
I love Haley so much, I’ve been watching her since I first started drawing in 6th grade and you can really tell how passionate she is about art in the way that she talks about it. She helped me progress so much and even today I’m still getting inspired to further experiment with my artstyle and such 🙏
Id get it. As a person who basically just messes around. My biggest problem is to have a style that can work consistently for bigger projects. Though i do like the minimalist shading with good color harmony with somewhat harmonic lines as a comic style. It usually has very good flow. For example the one used in parallel city. Or Love yoo
i never thought that changing a line art brush would change your art style, but i randomly decided to try out a new brush one day, and it completely changed my style, and improved my art. it was crazy!! sometimes trying something new is all you need to give you that boost
as an intermediate artist i find this advice to be quite helpful, especially in regards to digital art since i'm personally more familiar with traditional art. i already have a pretty standard art style that i draw in, but this can definitely help me to develop that style further, which is always nice. as for my line art and coloring, i have a very specific way that i like to do it for my traditional work! i personally like to have lots of line variation in my piece to add depth to my line art using microns/fine liners. then i like to add color in a very clean and crisp way with alcohol based markers, adding flat colors and basic shading. next i like to go in with colored pencils to layer on top of the markers to add more depth to the colors and shading while also adding texture to the piece as well. the end result always looks really nice imo, and this stuff took me years of experimenting to find out!
I remember watching your videos when I was trying to find my art style at like 13 for the first time and it makes me so happy that seven years later there’s so many more young artists that are able to benefit from your advice like I did
honestly one of my favourite art style videos on yt. So many other ones I’ve watched when I was just starting just gave the same advice. Don’t try so hard, it will develop over time, take things you like about other people’s art. While that advice is true, it wasn’t super helpful or encouraging at the time when I had no idea what I wanted my art to look like or what feeling I wanted it to give off. Your video is a lot more gentle, encouraging and supportive with your advice. Also, some of the more technical stuff was genuinely super helpful! Like that marker exercise with the different facial proportions is something I’ve never come across before. And your explanations on how a different lining or coloring style can completely change the look and feel of someone’s art were straight forward and easy to understand. Thanks for this!! You never disappoint.

Hey! I make comics too! The art teacher and I are the only ones who see them though. Haley’s point about making mistakes that turn into your style is so accurate too! I was trying to go for a more anime look when I started making my comics. One day, I randomly drew the hair on one of my characters differently than I normally did. I didn’t even notice until I looked it over. I loved it. Then, I made a mental note it how it looked, and applied a similar way of drawing hair to my other characters. Thus, my new way of drawing hair.

The part about people hating someone's art style resonates with me. I had four roommates who had similar art styles to each other, and they would always compliment and hype each other's art up. Every time I showed them my art, the reception was luke-warm. Their art styles were similar to Disney and Cartoon Network styles, and mine far from that. I had to learn that my art is worth love and praise as well.

Personally, i think experimenting is hugely important to finding what style you like most. Sure, looking at art and picking what elements you like *looking* at can be inspiring, but actually drawing and trying different ways of drawing things is irreplaceable. You can point out things you like to look at all day, but it simply might not be whats actually enjoyable for you to draw. It does mean you'll probably end up with a lot of drawings that are ugly or aren't fun to draw along this journey, but its only by getting those out of the way that you'll discover what you do like, and it might not be what you expect.
This might be a bit of a controversial art tip to give, but also changing your style for whatever piece of art you're doing is fine. The main downside to this would be that less people will recognize your art, which means you're essentially not very effective as a brand. Furthermore, if you do commissions, there might be confusion as to how the piece will look (For me, I've found that asking a commissioner what art of mine they want it to look like solves this problem. If you're still learning you're probably not taking commissions so this isn't a huge deal anyway though). Basically by not trying to stick to style guidelines for the art you draw, you're sacrificing brand consistency for breadth of skills. Not saying there's one of these you should prioritise over the other, but you do have a choice.
As a personal anecdote, I've tried drawing more anime/manga style stuff here and there, and tbh, I just don't find it that fun. I used to watch a lot of pokemon anime as a kid and I thought that was how i wanted to draw, but over years of drawing I've come to learn I really enjoy digital painting, and clean lineart, while beautiful to look at, is a bit hard on my patience.
So yeah, it can be a little daunting to try and build a style from scratch, but I think it's important to know that you don't have to decide immediately, or ever. I've been doing art professionally for about 3 years now and I still can't decide whether I prefer drawing characters with or without noses haha. I might in the future, but who knows. I'm still learning. All I know is that at the moment I don't really commit myself to one style, and I'm having so much fun with illustration.
I think this video is a great example of some things you can try if you're a beginner artist. What I'd encourage to any budding illustrators is rather than picking one thing in this video to try and recreate, try as many as you can! If i watched this video when i was a teenager just starting with digital art, back when I wanted to draw just like LavenderTowne, I think it wouldve been a great push for me to stop trying to tunnel-vision myself into having my art be one specific way.
TLDR; don't let your idea of what you want your art style to look like limit you. Pushing outside of your comfort zone means you're probably gonna end up with some failures here and there, but in the long run, you'll end up finding out what you really enjoy most.

I am LIVING for pencil sketch line art, I mostly work with markers and pens but I’ve recently fallen in love with colored pencils and more messy sketches, there’s so much less pressure to make clean line art!
If you don't already know about her, I'd highly recommend the work of Gretel Lusky who goes by Gretlusky online. She has such a pleasing style, and her sketchbook work (videos on RUclips and Instagram) has the rougher pencil style you were talking about! She's probably my favorite artist so I really recommend you check her out :D

Bullying and criticism are two different things. And sometimes people use "its critism!" as an excuse to bully. No one wants to get bullied not even online. And some people dont even want just critism.
Even when giving criticism make sure to point out the cons of the thing you're criticizing it'll make them feel more determined and motivated

You know I'm lucky cause people say my drawing are weird and ugly and then I ask "Let me see you drawing skills then." Instant regret, works everytime cause they probably know their art style isn't pretty and just spreading their insecurites on other people.
One of the best responses I've heard (and have since started using, myself) to a young/new artist lamenting not having a style is, "You do have a style. It's already in you. Your style is just the way your brain solves art problems. You find your style by drawing a LOT, drawing as much as you can, drawing anything and everything."

Y'know, I had a really funny conversation with an artist friend the other day: She complained about not being able to write as well as me, I inversely complained about not being able to draw as well as her. We both looked at each other and burst out laughing. No matter your medium, you're going to have bad days, and you're going to wish you were as good as your idols/friends.
I also think the best way to explore your style, whether it be in writing or art, is to consume other media/your peers' media. Put the pen/pencil away and explore a little bit. Maybe keep a notebook/sketchbook so you can capture rough ideas you like. Style is a collection of quirks, ultimately. I have a very Blame!/Usuzume No Hate/Existentialist tilt to my writing (and my beginning drawings), and she has a very colorful and flavorful approach to her art/writing.
It's ultimately a collection of your experiences and your preferences, so the best advice is to simply keep drawing and consuming the media you enjoy.

@@spam-el3ee If you're feeling lost, I've personally found it helps to look over the past 5(ish) pieces of media I have consumed, and see if there's a guiding thread or theme in them.
For example, I recently reread Girl's Last Tour, Blame!, Usuzume No Hate, Berserk, Akira (Yes, the story before it became a movie), rewatched Ghost in the Shell, and started a Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough; all of these have desolate, bleak, and lonely themes to them, with a hint of hope. I also learned that I worry (a lot) about unchecked human expansion/progress, so that was fun.
Seeing my friend's art, and after hearing her suggestions, I'm now moving towards things like Ghibli films, Arcane, and weirdly obscure black and white films like The Bishop's Wife.

About the part regarding bullying artists online being normalized - I found an animator whose style really highlights the eyes, making them incredibly big, oddly shaped, and incredibly expressive. Almost NO ONE had anything good to say about it, but it was so incredibly creative and such a smart way to portray differences in personality, design, etc. I can't believe that people think it's okay to bully people just because they don't find their art appealing.

I love how you also bring up how your lineart affects your coloring style! I do a pencil/scratchy style, and I struggle a lot doing coloring. I don't like to color my drawings if i don't have to, because it's a bit more difficult to change values when I shade on lineart.

11:00 to 14:40 is really important and I’m really happy to see this topic be brought up more and more by the day. A lot of artists draw to make themselves happy and keep the style true to themselves, and it hurts watching them be made fun of for “making the eyes too big” or “the body too small”, etc. every artist is always learning, and if you don’t like the way someone draws then keep scrolling 🤷♀️

This was actually so helpful for me to hear, when I was starting out I didn't know how to find out what I wanted to do with my art style, I tried mimicking my favorite artists which also included you! My style is certainly not a 1 to 1 ratio of yours but there are influences in every artist I am inspired by in my own art and it's an awesome thing to see.

This was really fun to watch, I liked seeing the different brushes and how they changed the whole drawing even though you used the same sketch. Very helpful, simple,and fun.
I mainly use the monoline method for lines and colouring, so this video was super helpful to find what other styles there can be!
I would consider myself a well seasoned artist, but recently Ive been going through an art style identity crisis where in I find myself able to draw in multiple wildly different art styles that I find appealing but cannot decide which I want to stick with. This was right on time to remind me return to some fundamentals and test out the art styles I find attractive.

As someone who personally has been blessed with finding my artstyle pretty quickly, keeping the same one I've had since I was 9 (stylised semi-realism, alas i still have struggles like any other artist) and I have tried exploring into other territories or having sub styles that become more realistic or stylised, I find this video interesting with how it articulates art styles and put me into a better mindset when thinking about my style !! 10/10, been watching you for years and I still love how you make your videos :3
I'm seeing this right after I perfected my artstyle lmao, something I've found that helps cell shading is adding gradients to add more dimension. one layer of my shading is exclusively done with the air brush and then the next is just a standard hard brush, the gradients truly make a difference
i just have to say: i’ve been in art school for four years in all four years have been struggling to pinpoint my style, so i tried to turn haley’s analogy for houses in the art community into an exercise (to make your own little art house that represents you in the artistic community) and it really really helped, i’d encourage other people to do the same it’s actually so fun :D

I already have my art style pretty set it but I just love watching these videos. For me it’s kind of a way I can analyze my own style, both learning and reminding myself of WHY I like the draw the way I do compared to other ways I could draw. It also helps give me ideas on how to improve

I love Haley so much, I’ve been watching her since I first started drawing in 6th grade and you can really tell how passionate she is about art in the way that she talks about it. She helped me progress so much and even today I’m still getting inspired to further experiment with my artstyle and such 🙏
Id get it. As a person who basically just messes around. My biggest problem is to have a style that can work consistently for bigger projects. Though i do like the minimalist shading with good color harmony with somewhat harmonic lines as a comic style. It usually has very good flow. For example the one used in parallel city. Or Love yoo
i never thought that changing a line art brush would change your art style, but i randomly decided to try out a new brush one day, and it completely changed my style, and improved my art. it was crazy!! sometimes trying something new is all you need to give you that boost
as an intermediate artist i find this advice to be quite helpful, especially in regards to digital art since i'm personally more familiar with traditional art. i already have a pretty standard art style that i draw in, but this can definitely help me to develop that style further, which is always nice.
as for my line art and coloring, i have a very specific way that i like to do it for my traditional work! i personally like to have lots of line variation in my piece to add depth to my line art using microns/fine liners. then i like to add color in a very clean and crisp way with alcohol based markers, adding flat colors and basic shading. next i like to go in with colored pencils to layer on top of the markers to add more depth to the colors and shading while also adding texture to the piece as well. the end result always looks really nice imo, and this stuff took me years of experimenting to find out!

honestly one of my favourite art style videos on yt. So many other ones I’ve watched when I was just starting just gave the same advice. Don’t try so hard, it will develop over time, take things you like about other people’s art. While that advice is true, it wasn’t super helpful or encouraging at the time when I had no idea what I wanted my art to look like or what feeling I wanted it to give off. Your video is a lot more gentle, encouraging and supportive with your advice. Also, some of the more technical stuff was genuinely super helpful! Like that marker exercise with the different facial proportions is something I’ve never come across before. And your explanations on how a different lining or coloring style can completely change the look and feel of someone’s art were straight forward and easy to understand. Thanks for this!! You never disappoint.
