  • With over 1000 Pokemon and 900 moves, there's gonna be a few questionable combinations. Some of them exist even though they shouldn't, like Wooper and Gastly learning elemental punch moves, but today we're looking at the opposite side of that coin. What Pokemon have moves that they can't learn, even though they should for whatever reason? Why can Bellossom learn Moonlight despite evolving with a Sun Stone? Does Matt proofread his scripts properly? All that and more in today's video, as Matt and Elias take you through Pokemon that can't learn moves they should.

    Hi there, ZAPATOS is in fact not spelled with an accent, my bad
    Misty Terrain also doesn't power up fairy moves, it just powers down dragon type ones, so that rant about Ortega was kinda unnecessary

    • @kbowman772
      @kbowman772 Год назад +2

      If anything, Ortega is playing it smart by getting rid of terrain since it just prevents status on grounded Pokemon... the status it is already immune to.

      I don’t know why Misty Terrain is like that, like it would make more sense like that. Maybe because it’s not called Fairy Terrain that’s why it’s not called that but that’s stupid. Now I would say it should but Tapu Fini and Fairies in general are kinda good.

      Swallow would always fail if Dusclops learned it because it can't learn Stockpile. Plus the move isn't swallowing your opponent, it's swallowing the energy you build up from stockpiling

    Misty Terrain weakens dragon moves against grounded targets (because fairy is totally not immune to dragon, amiright), doesn't boost fairy moves like other terrains do with their types.

      And ironically enough, all but five pokemon that learn the Move Misty Terrain either aren't Fairy or become Fairy, that being Gallade, Volcanion, and the Quaxly line. Gallade gets it because Ralts and Kirlia can, Volcanion I think only gets it by TM because of it movie counterpart being a bodyguard to Magearna who is Fairy, and the Quaxly line gets it probably becaue of the fact Quaquaval's design makes it look a little fruity(not even being it as an insult, just find it funny they went for it)

    what ppl very VERY commonly overlook is the fact that moves r named differently in different languages. sounds obvious yes but it makes things like growlithe not knowing growl make some sense. in japanese, growlithe is called gardie (taken from the words guardian or guard dog) and growl translates to cry. the move is described as being a growl BUT in a cute way. a pokemon like growlithe, based on its pokedex entries, is more likely to bark when it or those its loyal to r threatened and fight directly by biting instead of growling cutely to throw the opponent off. now im sure theres cases when taking the original names into account in which pokemon a should have move b bc of aspect c but just doesnt for who knows what reason, game freak is very good at making game design choices other game devs wouldve implemented years earlier. ppl just have to realize its not just the english names that exist. there r valid complaints here like wugtrio not being able to learn tri attack despite everything tracking in both english and japanese but a lot of these can b debunked by doing some quick searches on bulbapedia or looking just a little more closely at the dex entries ur citing

    • @MEPlaysGames
      @MEPlaysGames  Год назад +19

      See, the problem is that when you’re localizing/translating games, this is the kind of thing I think you’d want to make an effort to avoid. If you wanna say Growlithe is more likely to bark than growl, that’s all well and good. I don’t agree with that 1000%, cuz plenty of Pokemon can learn Growl despite no direct references to growling in the Pokédex or anywhere else. But that’s besides the point. In that case, the responsibility falls on the localization team to make decisions that don’t clash with each other. By the time Red and Blue came out internationally, Red and Green had been out in Japan for a while, so there was already a general idea in place of what the original 151 Pokemon were all about. So the folks translating the game would probably know that there’s a fire dog Pokemon, that there’s a move that lowers attack by 1 stage, and that the Pokemon was incompatible with this move. So ideally they would give the dog Pokemon a name that isn’t derived from the name of a move it can’t learn. So during the development of gen 1, something was off, whether it was the folks originally designing the Pokemon and assigning moves, or the folks in charge of translating the game for international audiences. Some people call Growl’s English name a translation error, but I don’t think it’s as simple as that.
      The Japanese word they use for CRY can also translate to BARK, so if you ask me Growlithe should be able to learn Growl either way. The word in question refers to a whole host of animal noises. Barking, roaring, cawing, and so on and so on. A lot of people in this comments section (not you though) have just said “well growl’s name in Japanese is CRY” and not elaborated. Translation is a messy thing, but at the end of the day, a lot of the other dog based Pokemon can also learn Growl, so I think it makes more sense as a starting status move than Leer. If Pokemon could only learn moves that line up EXACTLY with their biology and dex entries and such, movesets would be so much more restrictive because there wouldn’t be a lot of options left. Whichever angle you look at Growl and Growlithe, it’s not a stretch to say that it’s a move it reasonably could have access to. Moves having different names in Japanese doesn’t mean it’s not valid to say stuff like Growlithe can’t learn Growl
      That whole ramble might have been entirely incomprehensible, but those are my thoughts on the whole thing

    Clauncher not learning Rock Smash makes sense when you actually see what the move itself is. Rock Smash is not JUST breaking a rock, it's punching it so hard that it breaks. Clauncher doesn't have the physical strength to shatter a rock with a physical blow, which is also what the move does in battle.

    Kyurem Black is an ice type with a massive attack stat. Despite this, it couldn't learn any physical ice moves other than its terrible signature move until gen 9, where it got icicle spear.
    It's got an arm covered in ice and can't learn ice punch. Here's a list of pokemon that can learn ice punch:
    Poliwhirl
    Abra
    Ghastly
    Maril
    Wooper
    Wismer
    Probopass
    Audino

    Ampharos, the light pokemon, said to use the LIGHT from its TAIL as a beacon, can't learn the move TAIL GLOW. I mean, I get that its the signature move of Volbeat but with the signature moves of certain pokemon being given to others, i think its time for Ampharos to finallg learn it. It would also make it so much better as a tanky special attacker.

Scizor along with the paras line would LOVE the fire coverage,and then other contenders could be the dwebble and gligar lines who dont need it as much but would definitely be a pretty neat tech option.

    Your first argument makes no sense.
    The reason why Clauncher doesn’t learn Rock Smash is because Rock Smash is a physical fighting move. Clauncher’s Pokédex specifies that it LAUNCHES our jet propulsions (in other words, Special Attack). Therefore, it makes sense that Clauncher can’t learn Rock Smash, since Rock Smash is physical, yet the strength Clauncher uses is Special.

      All I’m saying is that the Japanese name doesn’t change my point that Growlithe should be able to learn it. The Japanese name for the move is often used to refer to barking, which Growlithe does a lot of according to the Pokédex. Just because the name doesn’t mean the exact same thing in Japanese doesn’t mean the move doesn’t make sense. There's nothing about Growl that suggests that Growlithe shouldn't be able to learn it. Plus there are moves that nearly every Pokemon can learn. Captivate and Confide are universal TMs in certain generations, and they lower stats in the same way

      Dragapult with a usable physical Ghost move that isn’t Tera Blast Ghost means it can use Tera Blast Fighting. Coming off its 120 Atk with blazing fast Speed, perfect STAB coverage in Ghost and Tera Fighting would insane. Not to mention Dragon Dance and Dragapult’s unpredictable nature. Can’t be so sure its Band, DD, Specs, Boots, Screens, Mixed, etc until it uses 1 or 2 moves.

    Volbeat and Illumise had Signal Beam as a signature move when they were introduced in Gen3. Then it got distributed to other pokemon. Then for some reason they removed the attack from Gen9, lame, but at least Volbeat and Illumise weren't there either. Then they brought back those pokemon with the DLC, but not Signal Beam. So not only did their signature attack stop being their signature attack, but then it got removed entirely and they didn't even bother to bring the move back when the pokemon came back.
    At least Tail Glow came back. But Ampharos still can't learn it. Yes, its called Firefly Glow in Japan, but Manaphy and Xyrcitree can learn it and it those sure ain't fireflys, so let Ampharos have it already.
