    I swear I wish I'd known all this back in college a gazillion years ago. (I am 70.) Learning these things now has given me so much joy. I've been able to grow my nails out longer and keep them well manicured longer. I'm really having fun with this, and it's thanks to folks like you on RUclips for this education.

    you can also use rubbing alcohol or acetone to dehydrate the nail.

    • @KelliMarissa

      +Ashleigh Latham yes that's a great point Ashleigh!

    • @lynnstab7789
      @lynnstab7789 7 лет назад +59

      Ashleigh Latham you shouldn't use acetone to dehydrate your nail plate. That will cause an over production of oil and can cause premature lifting or chipping. 91% alcohol is safe for your nail plate when used sparingly. Or wash your hand with soap and water and let dry before polishing.

    • @beckyschmidt8347
      @beckyschmidt8347 7 лет назад +27

      Ashleigh Latham I use rubbing alcohol too. It's inexpensive, I've always got it around, and the alcohol prep wipes they sell in the pharmacy section of the store are awesome because I can toss a couple in my nail kit and do my nails on the go!

    I don't spend much on my nail products because I really can't afford it. However, if I stick to the basics, I can make my $2 sinful colors polishes last for a month. My nails always grow out before chipping. Not sure what I'm doing right..
    I use 2 coats of my Revlon strong adhesive base coat, 2-3 coats of color till I reach complete opacity, then I use a very thin Sally Hansen kwik dry top coat, followed by another coat of thick top coat (don't remember what brand. I have a few, but I always spend good money on my bases and tops). I always make sure to wrap the tips with every coat. I also refuse to use gel polish because I change the color too often and removal is awful for your nails.
    My nails are super strong and I take good care of them.. always shaping them, touching up the edges so they don't snag, and moisturizing between manis.
    I haven't been to a salon in years because I prefer doing my own. Last time I got a professional mani, it chipped in 2 days.
    I can't see spending $20 at the salon when my nails look just ad nice when I do them. I use to do farm work and they wouldn't chip. Not even after being soaked in water. I'm seriously so rough on them and they always stay almost perfect somehow. :-)
    I think a lot of it has to do with everything I've learned from watching tutorials like yours .

    Cap the tips!! Cap the free edge of your nail with base coat, do the same with every coat of Polish, and don't forget to do it with top coat as well!! It definitely helps to keep yur manicure on longer!

      @KelliMarissa  7 лет назад +9

      +Amanda Snowden that's a great point, Amanda. I usually get lazy and don't do it with my base or nail polish color, haha, but it definitely helps with longevity!

    Wearing gloves is such a good tip! It makes a BIG difference. I have super fancy gloves that are almost fun so that it'll give me more incentive to wear them. EVERY TIME I clean my kitchen without gloves my manicure gets totaled and my cuticles look like they're college students during finals. lol My mom is always saying that she just can't wear polish even though she loves it because her hands are in water too often, told her to wear gloves but she hasn't gotten any. For Christmas I'm buying her cuticle oil and nice gloves because I hate that she wants to wear polish but feels like she can't keep it nice looking for long enough.
    wow that was a long rant over rubber gloves... anyways great video!

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  7 лет назад +7

      +Ciara Pershall lol! I feel the same way about using gloves. Where I grew up in NJ, it was common for everyone to have kitchen gloves - but I've noticed that here in Atlanta, people think it's so weird that I wear gloves to do the dishes! Haha, I wonder why that is. Anyway, it's a lifesaver for me too ;)

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 7 лет назад +1

      Like I said above, I have been wearing nails religiously for years when I do anything cleaning wise in the house but I wash my hands everyday after I go to the bathroom so they still get wrecked.

    • @Sherritasworld

      What kind of gloves did you get? I hate the regular dish ones and I'm allergic to latex.

    • @TheSnflwr
      @TheSnflwr 7 лет назад +2

      Sherry M I meant to say I wear gloves religiously, not nails, lol. The gloves I wear that I think are latex free are from the Mr. Clean brand. They are white and soft on the inside. You can Google them to see if they have any latex on them anywhere. Gloves are a lifesaver for my cuticles.

    Thanks for thinking of this series!
    I've never had problems with peeling or chipping, and it's mostly because my nail plate is not greasy at all. I can wear a regular polish mani for almost 2 weeks with minimal tip wear (my current mani has been going for 12 days with only minor chips). This is wonderful during exam season, when I can't change my polish but don't like going naked

      It depends on which top coat are you gonna use. For instance, Seche Vite can be used on a not dry coat of polish, as it will penetrate all the layers to form a unique thicker coat...
      If you use Sally Hansen Instadry instead, wait for the polish to be completely dry.

    Somehow my polish usually lasts at least 2 weeks and I do absolutely nothing to baby it. You said that nails can get stained. Mine start to yellow after a few months, which is common. I was trying whitening toothpaste, which I heard was good for this. A sudden brainstorm hit me. If whitening toothpaste helped, what would denture cleaner do? I got some and tried it. Magic happened. Just a few minutes in a cup of warm water with one tablet and my nails came out perfectly normal again. To date, I have never heard anyone else do this. I'd love you to try it and see if it works on others. And yes, I use one of the best brands of base coats religiously. They still turn yellow, possibly because of the long times between manis? 😊

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  7 лет назад +7

      +JayKB hey! I've never heard of that denture cleaner idea, but it sounds amazing! I would definitely try it but I find that my nails never get stained anymore, lol. Maybe I should go without base coat for a few weeks and then try! And hm, I wonder why they are turning yellow no matter what - maybe it's the amount of nutrients you're getting? I've heard eating garlic helps your nails a lot, (and I eat a ton of it haha)

    • @jaykb6587
      @jaykb6587 7 лет назад +5

      Kelli Marissa I use Spirulina every day. Without that my nails are weak and constantly break. I would definitely not try going without a base coat to try the denture cleaner. Watching comments on other channels, yellow nails seem to be quite common. Consider yourself lucky! 😃

    • @skiptomyluludarling8519
      @skiptomyluludarling8519 7 лет назад +2

      JayKB haha! I use the denture tablets also. I got the idea after I tried the bubble white from Sally's. I won't get quite as long from manicures as you. And I find when I use darker colors I get the yellow staining.

    • @jaykb6587
      @jaykb6587 7 лет назад +3

      Well, you know that adage that great minds think alike. In this case, I guess it's that creative minds do, also. From Robin Moses's videos, she says that yellow colors stain the worst. With me it's reds. At least we both know something we should share. :-)

      I'm using Sally Hansen base coat and so laque polish. If I had to, I would blame it on the polish, it is at least 3 years old after all, but this happens a lot, I'm probably doing something else wrong xD

      2-in-1 Shampoos are good to use as a single shampoo. Waay more hydrating than your standard and cleans as well as a clarifying without the wild stripping of your strands. Nothing can replace a great conditioner though ✨ I know HAIR , don't kniw squat about nails lol.
      I guess in the case of nails I just want to know which is more important, base or top coat? If the base coat makes your color adhere better, wont it do the same to your last color coat plus shine at the end? So why can't it double?? Super curious, but I'll take video girl's word for it.
      (Sorry I forgot ur name as i was typing, 1st time on your channel, GREAT video. Clear, quick, informative, well shot & the whole 9. @@NellenelleForSure i know this is an old comment, but in a nutshell: Base coat is meant to be painted on top of, so it doesn't have a very nice finish and dries kind of tacky. top coat dries super hard and makes for a very nice glossy finish.

      shell1338 Nail primer (used before applying artificial nails) and acetone are also good dehydrators in a pinch. They are EXTREMELY drying, so I'd advise to only in use if you are out of your normal dehydrator, or on clients with really oily skin or have issues with chipping polish. 😊

    Ok,this sounds crazy, but it is true!! I put coconut oil all over my nail bed, let it set 1-3 minutes, then wipe off excess w dry Kleenex, then I paint my nails ( I don't wash oil off)- this has made a huge,huge difference in my nail polish wear and stopped my peeling!!! I always cap tips and I use base coat and a separate top coat. Sometimes I use nailtiques, but the oil makes a big difference- believe it or not!!!

    base coat helps the polish stick to your nail more easily. A base coat also creates a barrier that helps protect your nails from the damaging effects of nail polish. It prevents staining and peeling, and it will give your polished nails a more even texture. 🙂

    okay, I always use cuticle oil, and never use a dehydrator. this is bad for your nails and will cause them to break. use your cuticle oil and just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before painting them, I usually get 6 to 9 days of wear, and would probably get more, but I take it off due to nail growth, which causes the gap to grow too large.

      +jane Doe hey! Thanks for sharing your tips. But - I've used dehydrator for years and it's never caused any damage! My nails are actually pretty strong, I only get a break about once a year :)

      I had that same concern so thanks for addressing it! My nails are brittle and often split and chip so logic tells me that my nails are already too dry! I looked up the base coat you listed (on Amazon though) and they also had the dehydrator and a moisturizing base coat so I was going to order the moisturizing one but the shipping costs as much as the polish!

    Very informative. I love natural nails and have read stuff but this was by far the best because it went over the difference of top and base and it explained the dehydrator. Never knew. LOL

    Odd tip (that I'm kinda embarrassed to write): If you use the OPI peel-off basecoat for sparkle polish DO NOT remove it with polish remover!!! It creates a chemical reaction and damages your nail badly. I wish I wasn't speaking from experience, but I am- I had it on my toes, it was taking forever to chip off, so I tried to soak off, and I'm still growing out the damage.

      +Frugal Libertarian oh my gosh that sounds terrible! I can't believe that happened :( did it peel up your nail??

      Kelli Marissa It left them with these dark white marks, and they were really dry and brittle. I had the baby toe on my right foot's nail break right in half, and the big toes are still breaking. I never show them without polish because they look horrible.

    But I just watched another video of yours where you immediately moisturized before you did your nails?!? Love your videos. Thanks so much.

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  5 лет назад

      Haha yes I do moisturize before my manicures but I either wash my hands or I use dehydrator to strip the oils/lotion off the nails first! Hope that makes sense. I don't recommend moisturizing until after if you have troubles with peeling though! I mostly do it just to help my cuticles get pushed back, or because I want my skin to look nice for videos haha.

    ~ Great video Kelli - it's nice to see someone use their smile in their voice vs the monotone ones we often see. "thumps up"
    I have to be honest, over the years nail polish has changed a lot & don't stay on as long as it use to. I would put mine on & it would last forever with or without gloves on. I use the same brands today & in 2 days, it chips. But will definitely try all those great tips :D Keep up the great videos!!! ~
    ps: i found an old bottle of nail polish (like from 10yrs ago {no lie} - needed a real good shake), put it on & it lasted... so definitely the combo ingredients they put in aren't the same anymore as suspected ;)

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  7 лет назад

      +Snooshies hey! That makes a lot of sense actually, because brands used to have three or more extra ingredients to help them dry quicker and last longer. They are safer when they're 3-free, but there is a trade off :O I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    When I was younger, like.... high school.... I never used base coats. then I basically never painted my nails. when I got back into it, I was using the fancy nail treatment/strengthening polishes. and it's helped a lot.

    Love your videos, Kelli! What is your favorite brand of top coat? My manicures only last a few days at most so I'm wondering if I change up my top coat if that will help. Keep up the beautiful work 💅🏼

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  7 лет назад +1

      +Colby Whetstone hey Colby, thank you so much! Lately my favorites have been Cuccio top coat, they make 2 different kinds that I really like - one is their 7 second top coat which dries extremely quickly, and the other is their regular top coat, which has a thick consistency like gel. I think their regular top coat lasts a really long time so it's really convenient if you want your mani to last!
