It was the towns and villages that were the heaviest, and brought the base PS4 into the ~20FPS territory. Would be nice to see how these parts run now.
On My Ps5 it has some minor but noticeable hitches while running through the cities but since there is mostly no combat it doesn‘t bother me that much. But the game looks super impressive at times and doesn‘t need to hide behind e.g ghost of tsushima. (Tested on HR mode)
@@T4ll4hassee Good to hear, cause I platinumed the game on the base PS4 like a week before I got the PS5, back in November '20. The moment I launched it in back-compat mode, and saw how the performance mode runs on the new console, I realized I should've just waited. Spending time in villages on the base PS4 was just nauseating after a while. CP2077 gets a bad rap for running poorly, but Ghostrunner, Control, Metro, this game - basically most games released at the tail end of the last gen, that aren't COD, DOOM, or SONY exclusives, dropped frames hard (sometimes even on the Pro, too). AC Syndicate was framey as heck, too, but that one has serious visual glitches on the PS5, so I had to endure it on the PS4. Even games like Jedi Fallen Order, that run alright most of the time, had constant performance issues on some planets. Glad this gen is shaping up to be 60FPS all around, and that even last gen titles get enhanced on the new machines.
Oh wow, I reinstalled Shadow Of The Tomb Raider last week with no thought of an upgrade so I can finally continue the game and finish it. This definitely made a good incentive for me to go back tonight!
I think that since the official patch for 60fps has the exact same performance as the FPS boost did, it goes to show that they really didn't optimize the game in any other way. They just set the frame rate lock to 60, and called it done. Kinda disappointing that that they take so long to do pretty much nothing to upgrade their game. I would think that they would want their upgrade to be running smoother than what the series x just does by itself. I'm still glad it's running at higher res and frame rate on these new consoles of course. More last gen games need upgrading, especially on playstation.
It's a free patch. They didn't have to update at all for a 3 year old game but did it anyway & for free. be grateful. Also it's running on backwards compatibility which has a lot of hardware restrictions fpsboost or boost by patch, doesn't matter. If it ain't a native next gen app,it's gonna run poorly on both machines. That's just how consoles work.
@@glorious240fps6 I know, and I am grateful. As I said I hope more last gen games get patched. But it's always nice to have the extra polish worked in, several of my last gen first party xbox games might as well be a native next gen game with their upgrades. I'll totally accept this with a smile, but it could be better. But I also understand that they didn't even have to do anything, I'm sure they have other projects going.
It does make me wonder whether Microsoft are saying to devs "get as close to native 4K as possible as VRR will smooth out the frame rate dips as our most valuable customers have VRR compatible T.V's " ...... ...because this seems to be a recurring pattern on 3rd party games. Although I suppose it could be a recurring coincidence.
@@leonfrancis3418 if it is purely a devs decision it's a strange one because different devs are coming to the same conclusion. In all likelihood it's probably that most teams are just not dropping the dynamic resolution enough which sort of works out for those with VRR .....but it's not so good for those without. Having said all that I can't see any difference past 1440p in any game ....lol
I think its just easier for them to get the existing games up and running on the Xbox, and VRR is a convenient crutch. Alternatively, there could be some discussion going on that we aren't privy to. I am still curious about ML support for the Xbox. We haven't heard anything in a long time.
I feel like the only person who actually really loves checkerboarding. I think the trade off is so negligible that I can’t really tell it’s not native 4K in motion. The performance is always so much better that I’d rather just have the checkerboarding over a native resolution.
I feel like variable rate shader will be the successor to checkerboarding, where sections of the image that don't need to be as clean require less processing.
checkerboard is underrated. horizon zero dawn for example was one of the best checkerboard implementations ever... no one would ever notice any difference if compared to native. 60 fps and cb 4k rules. it’s so much better than the normal res/performance trade off
Devs need to stop pushing 4k... It's a fucking waste lol. Target all settings to high and 60fps as a minimum. With dynamic resolution or just target 1440p and use reconstruction. Modern reconstruction is more than good enough to compensate for that res drop. 1440p60+ with high/ultra settings will always factually be superior to 4k with reduced settings and inconsistent frames.
@@shinobixero270 Imo, dynamic resolution is a god send. They can push higher frames and settings and just let the game scale the resolution as needed to help accommodate. Look at metro exodus. It uses mostly high settings, some at ultra, and features almost all the raytracing features while pushing 60fps on ps5 and series X. They just let it run with a dynamic resolution. And it looks and plays fantastic
That's great I have the game on the least powerful console, the Xbox 1 and I'm loathed if imma buy the game again for PS5 so I'm stuck looking at 1080p or something
Take in mind, both consoles are still running in Backwards compatibility. So no RDNA2 improvements, the evidence is how fps boost runs exactly the same than on the official patch. I ran Shadow of the Tomb Raider at native 2160P with console settings on a Radeon VII with smoother framerates than XSX here, and Radeon VII is weaker than XSX gpu.
It's a shame that developers don't check the performance of their code on XSX and release the patches with such poor performance. Just because the platform has more power on paper doesn't always mean that the hardware can handle it without any issues and frame rate drops.
@@sanskarkumar1614 Than congratulations, you're a respectable Xbox player, not an Xbot 👍 No hard feelings, I was just hoping to troll some xbots who think 4K is the most important thing for a console.

A ~1440p "high frame rate" mode would have been interesting to see. I think the magic spot is somewhere between the 1080p "high frame rate" and the near-4k "high resolution" modes. One doesn't push the console hard enough, the other pushes it too hard. Neither seems really ideal.
1440p truly is the gaming sweet spot. It can give you higher resolutions and still leave room for more post processing, particle effects and whatever other graphical eye candy you want. Unfortunately 4K is a huge buzzword most people can't let go of.
1440p is amazing. 4K is too when it's done right but 1440p is perfect for me at 60fps. Anything above 1080p is always a plus imo. Not shitting on standard hd just saying I'd rather have 1440p 60fps as a nice balance.
Consoles are targeted towards TV as the primary output device. 95%+ (and im being conservative here) use TVs at 1080p or 4K instead of monitors that do 1440p. The moment you care about resolution scaling for performance you should just play on PC.
@@DroneCorpse The new consoles are running games at dynamic 1440p upscaled to 4K. So 4K is really just a buzzword since last generation because Sony wanted more people to buy 4K TV’s.
@@DroneCorpse Games on the PS4 and PS5 that run at resolutions higher than 1080p upscale to 4k. Also, I think console games should come well performing from the developer. Part of the convenience of playing on a console is all of the work of figuring out the highest possible settings while still getting a stable frame rate has been done for you!
In 2013 I have a Lenovo laptop with a GTX 660M, it could barely run 768p@60hz. In 2015 a GTX 980 capable of doing 1080p@60hz. In 2017 I got a 1080Ti, that thing can do 1440p@60hz. In 2021 I was lucky enough to get an RTX 3080. Now I get 4K@60hz or 1440p@144hz. Seeing these consoles going thru the same phase, I've feel very appreciative of what I have and my journey to get here. People with beefy PC takes this for granted. We all came a long way but I'll always remember that journey.
I really hope that developers favour frame rate over resolution as this generation progresses. I would prefer a 1440p game with some great resolution upscaling tech (like Temporal Injection) and get 60fps, than native 4k at 30.
4K is simply not worth the processing power. It's double the pixels and half the performance of 1440p and honestly, it's visually pretty negligible most of the time in gameplay. I game on PC and if I need some extra performance resolution is the 1st thing to go. Unfortunately resolution has long been big ammo in the console wars and 4K has become a buzzword with people not realizing how absurd an ask it is to run it on even pretty damn solid PCs.
@@daveruda Native 4K has always been a marketing gimmick for the consoles. 1440p 60ps upscaled is they should target because these systems are no were powerful enough.
i agree. Rachet and Clank in Performance with Ray Tracing mode at 60 FPS plays infinitely better than it does at native 4k 30 FPS, and looks almost as good as well.

It does kind of feel like they didn't do as much work on Xbox. The Series S enhancement is.. underwhelming.. Especially when they upgraded the resolution on PS5. But who knows. Dev is hard.
They gave the game an actual 60fps update so it removed the fps boost option on Xbox. The only takeaway for me from this vid is that the ps5's saving grace on res mode is that fact that it's checkerboard. I can't tell you how irritating it is for me to hear people on last gen talk so much crap about checkerboard, but now it's suddenly fine. If the series x also used that method, i have no doubt the numbers would be higher on average. I say kudos to Xbox for keeping a higher resolution, even with the hiccups here and there. really flexing the muscle in my opinion.
@@zimelo6957 I think you're misunderstanding.. SX is pushing significantly more pixels (up to 100% more per frame) with only an occasional 10% performance penalty. A penalty that the dev thinks is better than lowering pixel count to match PS5, because the performance drops won't even be felt on a VRR television. Which BTW is nearly every television with HDMI 2.1, and devs are hoping next-gen owners are pairing their machines with HDMI 2.1 sets.
I’m happy they took the time to add this update, and it’s free, but I got to admit I’m a bit disappointed they couldn’t go to 1080 on the series S. This isn’t much different from the FPS boost. Still, I’m looking forward to playing this, I’ve had sitting in my games for awhile now and just haven’t got around to it, and the 60 FPS sounds a lot nicer than the 20-30 that It would have been before the update.
What a lazy next gen patch. Series S could easily be 1080p 60 fps. Devs just use Fps Boost and call it a "patch", didnt even change graphical settings.

The new update literally broke the lighting system on series x, you can see the artifacts i'm talking about at 7:05, there's light flickering on the sides of the plane. It becomes even worse later on, in some scenes the lights start to flicker so much that the jungle turns into a disco i swear
I think you just can't unpatch the game, the only way would be to still have the good version of the game installed and to never patch it. Tom probably didn't notice because the glitch gets heavier after the first few minutes when you're deep into the jungle, i'd say that past the first village after the plane crash you'd really start to notice it

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition needs this more than any other game in the series as there is no actual definitive version. On PS5, you get a locked 60FPS at 1080p with better assets and physics applied to Lara. However, PC allows for higher frame rates and 4k, but some of the assets are not as good. It would be nice for that game to get a resolution bump for next gen or to have an official PC release. Preferably both.
@digital foundry I've noticed in comparisons with a lot of the updates to last gen games that the playstation uses sub 4k resolution with checkerboard upscaling while xbox tries to aim for a more native resolution. My questions are: Do you know if this a developer made decision or the console side dictating this? Why wouldn't the same technique be used for each console in terms of how to deal with resolution (and possibly framerates) and is there any backend system performance advantage to one over the other? If this was the case that it could be done does that also mean the playstation and xbox would have matching performance across the board with resolution and framerate? Sorry if this has been explained previously and thanks for the good content.
Series Consoles also implement Auto HDR. Which easily explains the few dropped frames on the X. And ofc you actually can't see the diff without an HDR display, you won't see on RUclipss.

I find it strange that Series X can't just double the frame rate of One X while running at the same resolution. It attempts to do so, but drops frames here and there. Of the PS5 side it's even stranger, as the multiplier from PS4 pro to PS5 is almost 2.5X.

Series S definitely has the overhead for native 1080p, I would understand doing this update on Xbox if they had changed the resolution on S and X, but this does the exact same thing FPS boost did.
I think this is simply using the FPS boost, but doing it in an official patch. PS5 actually had some work done for it. However, the reality is neither is using the newer systems to their potential. Both of these consoles should be able to do 4k 60FPS native with ease on this title. They're running PS4/Xbox One code, however, not native code.
I don't know... My guess is that 60fps is extremely heavy for modern games, and the S' goal was 60fps no matter what. They had to drop the res to 900p.
Im just very curious on why PS5 and Series X where not able to do 4K/60 and why they didnt Go Native 4K/30 and 1080/120 in the options settings also why Series S was not running at 1080/60 and 1440/30 to me these are very good questions and would had made the game and new consoles shine with this title.
From what I’ve seen people say, this game is running under backward compatibility and cannot use the full power of PS5 or series x because it’s not a fully optimized version
1080p looks absolutely horrible on a big 4K TV. I played FH4 for 3500 hours at 30 fps (and I tried to be fast, not just drive around). My eyes couldn't stand 1080p. I have no complaints on Series X at quality mode.
On many games, it seems, that devs go on minimum effort. I mean, it should run better on Series X... And as someone else said here, now they marked it to be X/S-enhanced, so you GOT TO install it to internal drive... When the only thing to change is the 60fps thing, it's a lose-lose situation to fps-boost mode...
@@Countless_Relics No, you're actually not wrong. But, don't worry! I will edit it, so you can continue without worries ;) P.S. You see? You can sleep, restfully, again now! :D

Again.... you don't say it CLEARLY IN THE END that Xbox WITH VRR is a better option overall since you have 4k resolution and less noticeble drops.. You are avoiding mention this at the end of every video. We need to move on... playing without VRR in 2021 is a joke.
DF i love the content you put out i just made lunch and wanted something to watch instead of hulu etc always makes sense straight to the point and gets every detail
Native resolution means very little nowadays with the advent of these kinds of technologies. I would more often then not take a DLSS game or a CB game running at super high framerates and looking perceptively very close to native, then running at native and tanking FPS. As long as the CB or DLSS implementations are done well, it's really a win win.
I suspect that as soon as DLSS or similar is widespread enough games will ones again start to tank in performance because the developers will use the performance saved to just add new effects. But then running at native resolution will be close to impossible similar to it today being impossible to run a modern game only using a software (CPU) render path.
To a degree, but I wouldn't say that the technology makes native resolution mean very little. It still has artefacts and image breakup etc. You can definitely tell the difference com especially if you're on PC and you can switch between the two approaches. But I agree that would be technology you can get a at a higher framerate. That being said, the resolution mode is about resolution not framerate. There's already a frame rate mode in the that makes the necessary sacrifice of resolution.
You do know that the game is only tanking because it's running in backwards compatibility mode right??? Also the best way to play this game now is with vrr.....
@@UberNoodle In games like Control, the DLSS implementation actually looks better then native in my experience. So it really depends on how the technology is implemented.
So as someone with both PS5 and Series X, and a TV capable of VRR, which is the best version for me? If VRR smooths over the fps drops, is Series X better for its near-native 4k or is the droppage still too noticeable?
@@alra2heed843 I'm using resolution mode on Series X as well and it feels like 60fps. I tried FPS mode and feels the same. I do have VRR so that might help a little.
It frustrates me when DF refers to checkerboard as 1920x2160. That is not in any way how checkerboarding works. Regular width and height numbers can't actually describe the way checkerboarding works. The full image is 3840x2160, it's just that the first half of that frame is rendered in a checkerboard pattern, with the second half of that image rendered in the next frame. The gaps in that checkerboard pattern are filled in using reprojected pixels from previous frames. If the image is completely still, checkerboard produces a perfectly native 4K image. When normal levels of motion are there, it looks native about 95% of the time. When motion gets very fast and unpredictable, then yes the reprojection can't perfectly reconstruct the image, but in that case, motion blur will probably cover it up anyway. To the human eye in motion, it is extremely rare to ever be able to tell a difference between native and checkerboard.
Consoles are not strong enough, you will see a severe drop in fps. It's why Sony uses less resolution to keep fps stable vs xbox using more higher resolution 🤔
@@MajerHawk Is it so, also on Series X? Because I'm not sure if Series X supports even something like a dynamic resolution because no developer seems to use it!

With the pandemic and everything on short supply, I believe most companies will plan to hold off on releasing new games so they can maximize the sales revenue. For example: Release a game now for $60, for 1M console owners, that's $60M. Next year the same game will already be at a discounted price. Yes that's because it's PS4 pro version running on the PS5, and that console was always lower resolution than the one X version. Stable FPS should always be prioritized unless you're dropping to stupid low resolutions of course.
Love ya, DF and this is a great video. However, due to your format of "here's the worst performing sequence", it puts the Series X further behind than it really is from my personal playthrough (mind you I do not have the tools to test for framerate, just judging myself as drops are pretty easy to see in a 60fps title) as other areas of the game really do hold up quite well to 60fps at 2016p. However, if anyone sees this and is thinking/wondering about getting a VRR display...it's extremely worth it in situations like this (which there are several on both consoles, but only Xbox fully supports the tech). The game looks amazing on my VRR monitor, though I do lose some resolution down to 1440p as my 4K TV (dumb me bought it like 2 months before VRR started coming out) does not have the VRR tech. Bit of a compromise for me, but for those thinking about getting a 4K TV with VRR for Series X...do it, it's a lifesaver when the developer doesn't quite reach that 60fps mark.
@@suppressed_viii I was just saying what it won't fix and the benifits of having a higher more consistent framerate that the PS5 seems to generally offer
Its a locked 60 fps in 99% of the time you play this game. DF just picked the worst 1% and then declares PS5 as winner. Even though SeriesX renders almost TWICE the resolution and has a much better picture. DF is obviously paid by Sony / or they are Sony fanboys. No-one in their right minds would pick PS5 as the winner here. Especially because BOTH consoles drop frames in those areas. And SeriesX at least has VRR. Which means you will feel the 40-drops less then PS5s 50-drops. And as we all know - DF have a VRR capable LG OLED - so they experience a better image AND steadier framerate (thanks to VRR) - but still they declare PS5 as winner. Because of money / fanboyism. So yeah. Dont bother - DF do this in all their reviews. Reality is: If the PS5 would render this game at SeriesX resolution - it would just stutter all the time.
So, the port to Series X was basically just a copy/paste? It runs basically the same as the FPS boost version, which changes no lines of code from the game.

Not so sure about the 900p for Series S 🤔 Played it on XBOX One and Series S without and with 60FPS options and now with the patch. After the patch the image looks way sharper and clearer. Is that resolution or does TAA work better with higher framerates?
TAA works by accumulating information from the previous frame. If you now have twice the frames to pull information from, it's implied image will be more stable (or sharper) at 60 fps.
From what I can tell, Xbox One and Series S both run at 900p, so same resolution. What you are likely seeing as a better looking image is just higher graphical detail on the Series S. Better performance on PS5 as expected. I’m liking this trend of PS5 games running smoother. I couldn’t care less about native 4K, it adds nothing to the experience. Frame rate is more important.
With a TV that supports VRR, you're not going to notice the frame rate drops and are getting native 4K on XSX in Resolution Mode. In saying that, I'd still be in favour of dynamic resolution or checkerboarding for those people without a compatible TV.

Considering Microsoft already did an FPS Boost on their own it makes the Series update virtually pointless. PS5 update clearly had way more effort involved, checkerboard rendering to 4K from a lower base resolution, versus changing the frame rate of the Xbox version and no other changes or attempts to optimize.

I personally like checkerboarding, ill take a slightly less sharp image if it means a more stable framerate
Framerate > resolution any time!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
checkerboard is underrated. horizon zero dawn for example was one of the best checkerboard implementations ever... no one would ever notice any difference if compared to native. 60 fps and cb 4k rules. it’s so much better than the normal res/performance trade off

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition needs this more than any other game in the series as there is no actual definitive version.
Of the PS5 side it's even stranger, as the multiplier from PS4 pro to PS5 is almost 2.5X.

Series S definitely has the overhead for native 1080p, I would understand doing this update on Xbox if they had changed the resolution on S and X, but this does the exact same thing FPS boost did.
It’s using the one s code base and unlocked frame rate that’s why. They would have to make a native app to get 1080p.

Would be nice to get 4K 60 for all 3 games

Love ya, DF and this is a great video.
