  • Capcom has released 'next-gen' upgrade patches for Resident Evil 2/3 Remake and indeed Resident Evil 7. Three modes are added - performance, 120Hz and ray tracing - with all three current-gen consoles getting every upgrade. So how does each mode perform on each piece of hardware? Oliver Mackenzie has the details.

      VRR can't save the RT mode on PS5 - I noticed something was wrong immediately, and brought the game mode OSD up (the same one as in the video, cause it's a Samsung TV), only to see that it's constantly swinging between 40-60 fps. Once the car explodes, Leon and Claire are separated, and you're facing like 10 zombies in the streets, at the beginning of RE2, it dropped to ~30, and I was out.
      HFR mode is surprisingly good with VRR, though, the lowest I saw it hit in RE2 was ~80 during the cutscene when you're crawling through the gate to get to the Precinct's East Wing in the beginning (this, and the lab greenhouse were the most framey points of the PS4 version), and usually it stays ~100fps. Did a whole playthrough of RE2 in HFR, and it felt very smooth, indeed. Currently 70% through RE3, and it's the same, so provided you have an HDMI 2.1-compliant display, that would be my recommendation, especially since there's no loss in quality.

    • @brutalschel

      Unless the air vents are obstructed, clogged or something like that, you have nothing to fear. The 7th gen overheating days issues are long gone, and of anything, your console pushing a ton of hot air out is actually a sign that its cooling system is in full effect. IF you play for a long time and the console shuts down, and does so every time you play, then you have a cooling issue. If that's not the case, just have fun and don't worry about it (it's doing what's supposed to do).

    I wonder if RTGI and RTR are more expensive than the standard volumetric lighting and SSR settings from RE2's launch on PC. Low to high for volumetric lighting had a 58% performance impact for RE2 and apparently medium renders at of your native resolution. I remember it giving my old gpu a harder time than it should have. RE village is a way better optimized game and RT, while kinda sparce looked amazing in the mansion especially. We need a PC breakdown, it's nice to see console comps but PC would especially be appreciated for at least re2 as that had the most broken or jank settings. I remember the vram counter saying like 14gb when in reality I think it was about half of that according to afterburner.
    P.S. The RE engine is amazing. Look at max settings RE2/3/7/8 with RT and then boot up MH: Rise on switch. The scalability of this engine is amazing. MH Rise might not have crysis level foliage etc but it looks damn good on switch and isn't rendered at 360p to get a stable framerate despite everything than can go on during a battle, especially in MP.

    There is a bug in the ray tracing implementation in these games. I have an rtx 3070 and at first the game runs fine with RT on. But after a while the frame rate drops significantly for no reason. When I load the game from a latest save, the frame rate is back up and stable again at 60 fps.
    I had a similar issue with Doom Eternal's DLSS where it would stop working and RT would tank the frame rate. The same thing happens with DLSS in Horizon Zero Dawn where it just turns off after a while. FSR does not have that issue and remains on and stable.

    • @NXDf7
      @NXDf7 2 года назад

      Sudden frame drop with RT and DLSS on can be caused by not having enough VRam. In RE they give you a bar of how much vram you're using with the settings you have on, if it goes past that into red, that means you will have terrible peformance. RT especially has very high demand for vram. Doom eternal also has issue with eating lots of vram at higher settings and resolutions.
