A genuine PS2 classic gets a full remake using Unreal Engine 5, with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater brimming with promise in its recent Xbox Showcase trailer. Everything from MGS3's cut-scenes to animations are kept here, but with a radical reworking to detail over the top. Materials, shadows and more are supplanted with a cutting edge UE5 approach - so how does it compare to the original?

The original holds up remarkably well. Its a great example of the importance of a strong art style.
remember that the original shown here is taken from the HD collection.. The OG PS2 version was low res (480i?) and 30 fps.
@@Chasm9 still the same graphics/textures
@@nickm5419 true, I'm just saying
@@Chasm9 But still the artstyle of the original PS2 version is still strong.
@@Chasm9the original ps2 version looks a lot cooler than the HD collection
I think Snakes model in Delta looks totally on point, he looks pitch perfect to me
yeah, snake back then looks like he is over 40 years old, also he looks really cool with the bandana in some images i have seen.
I also love the new look of the Boss.
Everyone I've seen so far looks damn good, i remain hopeful as long as Eva looks fantastic
Big Boss' model has been extremely consistent since MGS3. It's clear that they reused the MGSV model and made him look younger, so it's not shocking at all. I'm wondering if they're gonna reuse Ocelot's model from MGSV as well and age him down...
Agreed. It's the best attempt I've seen so far at a realistic version of Snake's iconic look, and it does his face justice while being believable as a real person.
I’m glad they added an option for original color grading.
Loved the OG palette. All MG games have a unique tone.
still too green. needs more yellow
@@darkknight2864 no piss filter in my games, thank you very much
I cant believe how true to the original they stayed and snake's face and hair are incredibly detailed and beautiful, absolutely love this!!
I really hope they keep or have an option for the fade to black loading zones. The original it gave a vibe that each small area was like a puzzle to figure out. removing all loading, its all going to blur together, will have a huge impact on how the game feels
So excited to play this remake
Crossing my fingers for a performance mode.
I’m sure it will, it’s a linear game. And although it looks good it doesn’t look so good or ambitious that it shouldn’t run at 60 on consoles. PS5 Pro is coming as well.
It was confirmed to exist recently, so have fun.
Honestly this is what I wanted off of a silent hill 2 remake a shot for shot while keeping everything as is. I am not optimistic but I hope both projects launch in a perfect state we fans expect from them
I think MGS Delta looks great so far. It does make me think just how good the original MGS 3 still looks. Game was just a masterpiece.
As long as PC has 60fps or unlimited, I'm in.
I love the new graphics but I must be one of those people that are strongly impacted by 30 fps against greater fps. It truly is like a slideshow. It takes my eyes over 15 minutes to adjust everytime I play a modern fps at 120-240fps on a 240hz monitor.
I know people will probably disagree but I feel it just needs a slight bit of color correction for it to be perfect. I dunno but the vignettes and the greenish oranges hue ths original had helped ground its setting in the 1960s despite it evoking that retrofurist aesthetic as if the game camera was a camera of from that era.
The Boss looks good, but it's a bit off in my eyes. I'd like to see a slight redesign. If I was shown a full profile of her version in the remake out of context, it's likely I wouldn't recognize her.
yeah she doesnt look ghastly enough by the events in mgs3 the boss was just done quite literally
I kind of felt it but didn't want to admit it originally, but seeing the back and forth, it's shocking how much cheekbone structure matters! Hopefully it won't matter for the overall product (it still feels nitpicky) OR they have a Sonic movie level epiphany.
Also just noticed her jawline is a bit masculine. It's possible those 2 changes would be enough of a fix to make her recognizable
I'm hoping her hairstyle from the poncho / sneaking suit look from the rest of the game will suit the new face better.
I agree, i think Snake looks absolutely perfect, the way I i imagined him to look.. But the Boss looks like she doesn't stem from the same impression you get from here original model.
she has that thousand yard stare now, which really adds a lot of character. her redesign looks a little odd because im used to the og, but overall Im digging her look.
Really bummed out that they decided to use a generic, do-everything engine (UE5) instead of using a more honed-in one for this type of game. I'm highly sceptical about the final product.
I'd be interested to know whether the zones themselves are slightly bigger. The comparison makes it feel that way in the area with the bridge. Could just be the updated visuals though..
This game is gonna be great. Looks very faithful to the original. Can't wait.
The setting looks modern. Doesn't look like it's set in the 60's.
@@Sammy_X7 Im not looking to get into a scrap, but i don't get it... It's a jungle which shouldn't really feel like an era, its not very cultural of a place... and also its the same environment as the original... what do you mean in particular?
@@richardtucker5938 The green filter with haze is missing. Without it, it looks like Uncharted 4 or The Last Of Us.
@@Sammy_X7 Ok well, hopefully the filter they let people use can differentiate it from that perception, though I still don't understand what that has to do with it looking like the 1960s.
I do think its good to include some of that legacy stuff to make it look more like the original game however.
@@Sammy_X7 But a 60's jungle isn't going to look different than a 90's jungle or a 2020's jungle...
And if you're talking about the tint, they said there's an option to toggle it on or off.
i hope the add a setting so we can turn the piss filter back on like the original
I like the new character models, they look more like real people then video game characters.
Yeah, this is my favorite type of remakes, like TLOU:P1. hopefully they do just as a good job with the perf as the Visuals
Honestly wish Resi4 remake was this faithful
Story trailer made me SOLID SNAKE, gameplay trailer made me LIQUID SNAKE!!.....
Correction, it was “revealed” as a pachinko game.
3:28 Why is the original showing more detail somehow like clouds and debris particles. The remake looks way too clean imho.
6:20 based music choice
He looks like a mix of David hayter and Karl urban.
Commencing digital foundry analysis now!
Hhnghhh…this looks good-DAMN GOOD-I want some more!
i hate konami but i want this succeed sooo bad so devs understand THIS IS ALL WE WANT OUT OF 'REMAKES'....seriously they could print money all you have to do is leave the gameplay the hell alone and make it beautiful
I wish they add multiplayer mode. As single player only 60$ seems bit eh for me
Exciting remake effort
Remake whole series!!!
Just hoping the ps5 has the radio audio come via the controllers speaker
3:56 This is technically a fix, for some reason every cinematic in the HD Collection for MGS3 is slightly lower or higher than it was originally. The character and actor names are misalligned too, possibly as a side effect. The 3DS version fixed both of these issues.
I don't recall if enabling letterboxing fixes this, but it does fix the water during The Sorrow scene and The Wig scene where Snake leaves Eva to fight The Boss. On the flipside I think some of the credits in the Virtous Mission seen during the HALO jump appear over the bottom bar though.
3ds once again being the goat.
That is actually very reassuring that they would fix such a minor thing for this remake
@@OliM9595 The framerate is an issue, though.
This man knows everything about this game. lol
What's preventing Konami right now to just fix these slight bugs in HD collection, also HD collection never came back up on xbox store?
My snake is solid
Only untill its get some liquid
Ayooo 😂
Mine's punished
Old joke no haha
Mine is Old Snake…
Konami, please dont fuck this one up
Don't worry, unlike mgs 5 this remake isn't coming to Xb360 and ps3 so everything will be just fine
This is their one chance to try and redeem MGS and make money from it. Sure every MGS fan will be buying it but they want to hook in new players so if they mess it up that would probably mean the death of MGS as a franchise as they wont put resources into remaking the others if this doesnt sell and this wont sell if they mess it up.
I just want the master collection 2 on modern consoles so MGS4 can get off of PS3 and hopefully PW can live again with online gameplay.
@@darkking615you meant PS4 and Xbox one right?
I think they can't I mean look at it
@@Fafnir2000mgsv was released on the ps3 & xbox 360 as well.
I dig the new realistic look honestly. And the original look is still there with the remaster being available so Konami is doing this surprisingly right.
actually this comes close to the pachinko footage, even some assets are identical, seems like they used it as a template
They were trying to make it look realistic on PS2. MGS2 is possibly the most realistic looking game on PS2. But people seem to REALLY forget the PS2's limits. Basically every game looked somewhat stylized because you couldn't push the amount of polygons, lighting, texture quality etc necessary for a photoreal look.
@@MetalArcadeThe most realistic looking game on the PS2 has to be Silent Hill 3 from my experience... Google some screenshots and you'll see exactly what I mean lol
Then again that game had a dense fog so they reduced the draw distance to be quite close, and they were able to prioritise poly counts and texture detail on models as a result of that
@@samixalam_Nah bro that title goes to GT4
I wanna give Master Collection a chance. I know it's not perfect but at least is not as bad as launch
The dynamic red mud covering snake and creating a "dynamic real time camo" is such an amazing attention to detail that I could easily see Kojima implementing that if the tech was available. This remake is looking to be one of the greatest ever and given the fact it's one the most beloved games of all time from one of the greatest game designers is a HUGE feat.
MGS is cool, but Kojima is far from being a great game designer. He's never designed a game with great depth or dynamics, and half of his gameplay is so functionally limited that it barely even qualifies as gameplay.
@@alondite215He never had to, he made a game he wanted to make with his team. He wasn't making a game to appeal to everyone he made gameplay that worked with the enviornments he created while he was pushing the technical capabilities with every sequel he made. And it's truthfully impressive what he accomplished with such hardware. Saying he isn't a great game developer is truthfully a L take tbh. But it's ur opinion and u can have it :).
@@Kylehappy305 But a great game designer is someone who designs great _games_ with great _game design._
*Saying he isn't a great game developer is truthfully a L take tbh. But it's ur opinion and u can have it :)*
You didn't say "game developer," you said "game designer," and those are two different things. Yeah, Kojima is a great _developer,_ but he is not a great designer. His games are generally _very_ shallow and low-functioning.
And the fact that he's not a great designer is not an opinion, because it can be proven using evidence of bad design from his games.
3:56 the framing is inaccurate in the HD collection, I'm not sure why, it could be that the original cutscenes were made with the uneven letterboxing present in the PS2 release, this was fixed in the 3ds release of MGS3.
TL:DR; the framing is different to the HD collection, because the HD collection framing is incorrect, refer to the PS2 or 3ds release for the correct framing.
I've always seen the loading screens between each area as representations of a passage of time. Each area you come across is a unique area with characteristics that make it different from the last and the next. The loading screens - artistically - are communicating that 'Snake had to travel a while before he got here'.
I fear that without the fade to black transitions, the world will feel small, ironically.
I disagree completely. I feel like getting rid of those transitions will open the game up immensely, and make it feel way less like you're just playing a sequence of separated levels. Imagine if you get an alert and run into the next area, and instead of you being thrown into a new area awkwardly with no one nearby, you are instead followed by your pursuers. The whole alert system needs a makeover too.
I, for one, absolutely ADORE the character redesigns. They look like the real people the original characters were trying to cartoonize. Amazing work.
Using the exact same motion capture and camerawork in the cutscenes, is a DF viewers wet dream; The transitions and side-by-sides are SEAMLESS
It’s honestly pretty impressive to port over every single position of gameobjects + camera angles from one engine to another
Commencing Virtuous Foundry now!
It’s interesting to see how ahead of its time MGS3 was in terms of cinematic presentation. While these cutscenes aren’t cutting edge now, they still hold up very well using the same basic animations and camera movements. Similar to the RE4 in many ways, which also held up extremely well.
The games were heavily inspired by movies, so it's no surprise there. This was true for a lot of PS games before it, to usually less obvious extent (Tail Concerto, Jade Cocoon and Ghost in the Shell being the least subtle about it).
Great work aligning these shots Tom!
Thanks! It took a lot of attempts to get some of these as you can imagine. Just glad it was all useful for the final video
but how is the box rendered?
The original running on PS2 hardware connected to a CRT TV via s-video/component video still looks great. The PS2 was a powerhouse in its day. Of course the PS5 is leagues better and MGS Delta is hugely impressive, but it's still cool to see how well the older game holds up.
PS2 a power house? It was the weakest console available at the time.
The PS2 was miles behind the Xbox and even GameCube.
@@ChrisMusson-kv8ph “miles behind”…..that’s an overstatement if I ever heard one.
This looks cool. I've never played a metal gear game. Is this a good place to start? He said its the first chronologically
It’s an amazing game, and yes, chronology, it takes place before the last 4 mainline games
I could never get into mgs3 back when it was new but I played through it recently and it really is a good game. I can't wait to see how some of the more iconic sections end up working in this remake
Best in the entire series!
I just remember MGS2 being such a huge title for that generation, but the storyline was so convoluted that I wasn't very interested to play MGS3 by the time it released.
Time to correct that mistake!
@@corey2232 That's the magic of Metal Gear. The totally ludicrous story!
This made me a lot more excited for the game than I initially was.
Looks like a ton of work went into this, and it's really appreciated.
Me too, because I was just tossing up as a simple graphics Unreal tech demo upgrade. However DF makes everything seem better on the tech side, like the Last of Us part 1
This game has steadily moved from my "probably not" up to "absolute must buy". More of this type of content please.
Waiting for it to be $20-$30
It was a "must buy" for me the moment it was announced! All I am waiting for now is the release date.
it's basically a 1 to 1 remake like Metroid Prime, i already played the game several times, why would i buy it?
@@MaxIronsThird Because you enjoy it that much that you’d want to see what a modern remake plays like?
@@MaxIronsThird I've no idea why you would buy it.
Nor do I care.
I will buy it.
This is what GTA Definitive should have been. They're using the same foundation, just newer assets. You can tell from the 1:1 accuracy and some of the animations. Goes to show how good the cutscenes were in MGS3 to begin with.
To be fair, MGS3 aged a lot better than any of the 3D-universe GTA games. These games deserved full makeovers, including animation and voices (lots of audio is still heavily compressed with artifacting). T2 is just incompetent, deciding to hire a small studio (with expertise in assisting and porting) to remaster 3 classic games and only giving them around 2 years to finish them (and even being unable to provide uncompressed files because they didn’t archive them).
GTA games are extremely generic, especially the old ones, even if they made a good remaster the game would still suck
meh, ready for gta 6
@WellytonNandi agree somewhat, at least the maps would need to be reimagened and expanded and such or it would still stand out how limited they are in size/scope now, maybe more so with upgraded visuals, mafia remake comes to mind, but if they were to go to those lengths by then it would be a new entry essentially which we are getting with gta 6 anyways...i mean I'd have liked the 80s again, the music from that era, the cars, etc 🔥 otherwise could care less (san an 90s vibes were cool too though to be fair) but yeah at least we are back in vice city with 6 and it'll surely (if the trailer is anything to go by) bring some of the music, cars from the og so that'll suffice
characters, dialogue, story and missions still were a ton of fun even if mostly the same driving/shooting principles applied with most missions, hopefully they improve upon them along with some new gameplay twists and additions, they could get a bit generic/repetitive, still love rockstar and all the little details and easter eggs are always fun exploring, red dead 2 had them galore and truly was something to behold...the good just far outweighs and masks the bad bits
@@WellytonNandiThey basically invented the template for open worlds. It wasn't until studios like Ubisoft decided to create a template they could use to release their titles like they came off of a factory press that the genre became stale.
Carrie Ann Moss should play as The Boss in MGS3 movie.
Omg yes, I can see it now and its perfect. I just watched Memento a few days ago, she's great in that.
@duncanmacleod7287 crazy
But she's an emotional plank of wood
Including the original tint/color grade as an option is surprising
We need a comparison of Delta vs the Pachinko machine. I think that would be the better comparision.

It looks cool but idk, there's just something about the Original.
To vague say what I think it is. The Remake has People but the OG has Characters.
I want this to be compared to the pachinko rendition of MGS3
I definitely miss the iconic sun drenched illumination that the original game had, really makes the game look more generic & shallow. Kinda reminds me of later ports of GTA San Andreas completely losing that cool looking orange hue & the game looked really sterile.
There is a piss filter you can toggle on to make the game yellow again

Man looking at all this for the remake, using the same voice lines and animations, the choice between legacy and new. So far the quality of it, for KONAMI of all people, is incredible. The biggest question i have above all else is 'how are they gonna blow this'.
Honestly seems like the easiest route to go for them. So they're not gonna blow it because they're afraid to do anything beyond visual updates. It's kinda lackluster in that way, but I get it.
30 fps will make it flop for sure
@@danieloakland5416It won't, plus there's a performance mode.
I love the fact that whatever little excitement people had for that SH2 remake is being basically curb stomped into the ground by Delta, seriously bro why Bloober team though? Couldn't have they chosen literally anyone else?
It sadly makes sense because they are the only major dev that does the type of survival horror that Silent hill is, with the exception of Remedy, even though their track record has been pretty poor. And Konami would rather want to work with a more established dev rather then some indies that actually could give a remake that would make fans happy.

It's strange that in some shots motion blur is enabled, and in some it isn't. Even the original had MB, so I hope they make it an option.
Unpopular take: motion blur is actually great if it's implemented properly. (Per object.)
It looks amazing. Snake looks like an actual person.
MGS is one of the few game series we've gotten that is about war, but is not pro-war propaganda. I've never played another series that dealt with this subject in a mature way. Games like call of duty really have had in impact in the way people perceive war, and with the part the american government plays in the development of that series should be enough to tell you, they aren't telling you the truth of the matter.
You never played Armored Core or Ace Combat or Front Mission?
While I appreciate the effort and respect that is going into this “remake,” it makes me respect the original so much more. There is something special about the original art style and color tone that a more realistic look just doesn’t capture.
I wish they remade the 1rst one like that !!!!!
I'd imagine they will
In chronological order this's the first one
It's called "The Twin Snakes" and it also has superior cutscenes and NINJA ACTION!! Granted, it's no Unreal Engine 5, but it comes VERY close sometimes.
They more than likely will. Hence why this remake is called Delta instead of 3.
3 is the best mgs game. Mgs v is second. No point arguing. We all know it.
Another fckn Remake 💀 Jesus skip, I’m over the nostalgia hype games. Yall have fun with this
After witnessing Konami's cruel vendetta against Kojima, even preventing him from accepting well earned awards to the sequel to this very game, I won't ever touch anything that crooked company produces unless they make right their wrongs and bring him back in a consultant role or something. Disgusting behavior. Do they even acknowledge his contributions as the original director in this remake?
It does look slightly weird, like due to the tech, the art style doesn't feel like it originally was and is more generic, but still, it looks visually great. I love the way every MGS plays and are all slightly different from one another, but in this remake, I am happy to, at least from the look of it, have over-the-shoulder aiming akin to four and five where you'd otherwise use first person.
Snake is a dead ringer for mid nineties Sean Bean 👀

Look what they did to my gurl Big Boss, she doesnt have that concern mom look anymore. I am on the minority here but since everyone is saying what they want, I rather have Splinter Cell Chaos Theory HD with the online spy vs merc multiplayer become a passive live service game so they stop fucking crying about money. That engine could be emulated to every system make that shit cross platform so theres always people to play against. Chaos online Theory > MGS3 online
I hope Konami doesn't break the fans' hearts with this release. I'm skeptical bc they have lost all their goodwill from me. I will wait for reviews before purchasing.
Just hearing that music makes me excited to play this all over again.

The remake has noticable stuttering. I dont care how great the graphics look, if it stutters like that it takes me right out of the immersion.

@@MatheusFerreira-si4ju i kinda like the original graphics more to be honest. i dont vibe with the super blurry TAA and motion blur graphics the trailer shows. hopefully we can atleast turn off some of it. literally looks as blurry as the ps2 version just with higher rendering resolution.
@@dmer-zy3rbCan we please move on from demonizing motion blur and TAA? The game is built using UE5 which offers TSR, a temporal upscaler with GREAT image quality. The object-based motion blur lends the game the cinematic feel it needs, although I agree that it should be toggle-able for those who experience motion sickness. We’ve perfected all these technologies and just repeating the same bullshit from years ago just makes you look like you’re unable to form your own thoughts.
@@makimwah I get what you mean but they were hardly demonizing it, just didn't vibe.
Normally I'm all in with TAA (and upscalers) and good motion blur. For me, it's just that MGS3 has such a defined look that it's odd to see it in a different way.
@@makimwahNo, a good subset of people want the option of turning off upscaling and anti aliasing so they can actually see the raw rendered image, but because so many devs now use UE5 and forgo optimisation and just rely on upscalers, it means consumers have less options when trying to optimise their game settings. Maybe let's not shill and actually promote choice and variety within titles.

You gotta love the Japanese. Only they would remake the original so faithfully. If any Western company had done this, it'd be half-broken and ruined by "diversity".
I have a feeling they just lack direction without Kojima, and they know it. So they just add a face lift to MGS3 because they are afraid to make any other improvements.

Looks great but I wish they kept the yellow color filter. I don't know why every modern game developer are afraid of using filters.
0:22 I hate it when they make these cool tvs with high fps & it's so small. They need to stop with the small size & start offering bigger sizes alongside the smaller ones because they wait for us to buy the small ones & then turn around & offer the bigger ones to keep us wasting $$$ & scamming us.
Just waiting to see what they do to Eva since she is "augmented"
This remake looks amazIng
The Master Collection's underwhelming package left me with a Phantom Pain... only treatable with emulators. Delta on the other hand appears to keep the spirit of the original, which shapes up to be a true Son of Liberty. The graphical overhaul and addition of legacy features makes this a real Twin Snake. Can't wait to get my hands on it! If all goes well, I'd love a similar treatment for the rest of the series, so the series can Peace Walk into the modern era.
