Appreciate your guys reviews on this! You’re the only people who’ve I’ve seen mention the motion and visual issues. Will definitely be waiting on this as a result. Thanks as always DF!
Well, many reviewers just follow the current hype train, whereas DF made a name for themselves by not letting issues slide by. That said I am surprised that they didn't mention how nauseating this game feels because of the constant change in FOV and the annoying inertia of the character (at least based on the PC demo). I personally find it very unpleasant to play ...
Sadly DF seems to be one of the few medias that points technical issues in their reviews, as others medias seem to afraid of being blacklisted by game publishers. Elden Ring receiving 10/10 while having several issues and being extremely unoptimized made me stop considering the opinions of gaming journalists. TBH, I don't know how DF still receives review copies from publishers.

Great work Oliver! Agree that this is a visually stunning, faithful remake, but technically flawed in a few ways. It's baffling that Capcom hasn't implemented a functioning 30fps cap on console after so many years and remake efforts. They've also avoided proper upscaling methods like FSR (on console) and DLSS, which is weird since that sort of tech has been readily available for a while now. Would be great to see checkerboarding swapped out for FSR 2 on the console versions.
I am wondering if xbox uses some sort of fsr 2 with the added delay on controller inputs or added to interlaced reconstruction technique that Capcom uses on re engine
@@sellingacoerwa8318 to clarify, I meant an optional 30fps cap when using resolution mode (and RT/Hair Strands) and for last-gen versions. Obviously performance mode should target 60fps. I personally prefer a locked 30fps with proper framepacing to fluctuating 30s-50s since I don’t have a vrr display.
I recently finished the game on a PS4 Slim, aside for the low resolution on the textures the game works pretty decent for my eyes, my biggest complaint was when I use the Sniper Rifle, the zoom low the fps a lot and sometimes is really annoying to aim, specially against regenerators, and another FPS's drop was against a certain boss near the end. But at the end was a good experience, hope the fix at least the issues with the Sniper Rifle (and the textures too)
Frame rate mode should have had a resolution of 1440p to keep the frame rate more stable. All current gen games should just have performance mode at 1440p with RT.
@@randybobandy9828 That's only if the display has to do the scaling. In this case the console does it which has good results, and devs can also implement higher quality upscaling methods if they want.

Got this yesterday morning for the PS5 and I've already played over 50% of the game, really enjoying the game . I've set the resolution to resolution mode and for the most part it plays and looks great, I did notice this morning that during a section of the game outside where it was raining heavily and very windy the game seemed to struggle slightly, it was noticeable. As soon as I took Leon inside the gameplay was very smooth again. Not a deal breaker for me personally, one of the few games I've spent so much time on in one go. Thanks for your take on this awesome game DF.
That part of the game appears to be very intensive. I’m not sure what on whether it’s the CPU or GPU, but it put my pc under serious pressure. I’ve got a gtx 1080 so fairly old now, and was getting 70-90fps on 1080p ultra with a couple of things turned down, then I hit the windy rain section of the village and it dropped massively, all the way down to like 40 and even 35 fps. Shocked me Tbh, but soon as I got through that section it’s back up to 70+ fps again.
@ESKATEUK I've got the same issues with my 12900k paired with an RTX 4090. This part of the game in question is poorly optimised as my CPU usage won't go above 26%, and because of this, my GPU is being bottlenecked by as much as 22%.
I played it on PS4 and the most noticeable stand out was some big doors were a bit blurry but it's a minor issue for me as through my play through the game was pretty smooth and I comfortably played through the game and had nothing bad happen. Obviously you want ps5 or pc but it's still playable on PS4.
Yeah, I'm playing on PS4 as well, and some textures are really low resolution for some reason. Not all textures are, just some random ones sprinkled throughout the game.
Its not the PS4s fault, its all about optimisation! The PS4 is a beast of a console, can handle games like uncharted 4 or the last of 2 us, so why not this game?! They drop the resolution just to sell you this stupid next gen PS5, its all about money making. very sad
Great work Oliver. Much respect for saying it how it is, no sugar coating. Everything backed up with examples and data which hopefully the devs can use to improve the game.
The hair strand thing is so weird because for the PC demo I swear it was reversed. Where the card based hair was completely matte but the strand one actually had some specularity.
@@MaxIronsThird He does. He points out that the PS5 version is the only/main one with the odd looming Hair Strands (or both console versions) and the PC version looks better overall. However, idk what the OP is talking about, the card based hair didn’t look matte at all
@DigitalFoundry Guys, I noticed a little stuttering in the village, but when I came to the castle (meeting with Garrador), the stuttering began to rage. This is most obvious when meeting Novistador. Please report these issues to CAPCOM! PS5/Any mode
@DeMiDroL they are not happy with the performance and are encouraging Capcom to get to work fixing these issues. Knowing Capcom, though, they likely won't address many of them and only focus on gameplay bugs. It's sad that most of their current gen titles require a VRR capable display to enjoy them to the fullest. I have one, but the majority of the install base very likely does not. I understand you've said English is a second language, if I need to break this down simpler, let me know. Not trying to insult you, just want you to understand the situation further.
@@DimetriusYT based on the video its better to play in either fps mode for best fps no rt or hairworks and disable chromatic or res mode for better image quality so just dont enable rt or hairworks since they are poor in this game
Starting with Resident Evil 7, every game in the series released on Series S so far featured Ray-tracing so it's nice that RE4 Remake kept it for some degree.
These games are best played in VR where you physically hold the weapons in your hands and aim like in real life. It requires much more skill than using a controller. Resident evil village on psvr2 is a fantastic example of this. Having to keep your nerve and physically reach into your pouch on your belt to grab a clip and then physically reload your weapon while werewolves are charging towards you takes a lot of nerve. The fact the enemy are life sized or often tower above you in VR makes them extremely intimidating as well. As everything is in stereoscopic 3d and looks almost real it tricks your brain into thinking you are in a real life scenario and panic sets in. Resident evil village on psvr2 is a revolutionary gaming experience and the resident evil 4 remake VR mode which is coming has potential to be even better.
Agreed. The way you get haptics in your head when you use the shotgun in resi8 made me jump the first few times😂😂😂😂😂. That combined with the haptic feedback from the controllers and the resistant triggers and the load bang made me think I had fired a real shotgun. Maybe need to turn the volume down😅😅😅😅😅. It's so immersive in VR. I was sceptical at first, but wow its something else. Even replaying old games in VR makes them feel brand new. The psvr2 has bought back my love of gaming after It was getting stale.
@@tronsaibeeBeen gaming for nearly 50 years and feel the same. Was growing bored of gaming. PSVR2 has changed all that and bought back the magic. It's like nothing I've ever experienced. Great work as always! One series I'd like to see an analysis from you guys is the Atelier series (Ryza 3 launched yesterday), specially since Gust improved a lot from Ryza 1 -> Ryza 2 -> Sophie 2 -> Ryza 3 (4 games in 5 years), tackling now in the recent title an "open world" of sorts. It is amazing considering the budget they normally have and the disparity in tech quality compared with the recent Pokémon titles, for example (that have way more budget and personnel working). Thanks!
@@blushingralseiuwu2222 , performance-wise, yes. But from Ryza 1 -> 2 -> 3 there was a lot of improvement (they crammed Ryza 1's entire map + extras into one of the regions of 3, without loadings) and this would be good to see an analysis. Also, compare to Pokémon for bonus picking on Gamefreak hahaha
It still looks like a spruced up PS3 game. Yes the world I'd open but it is certainly not a technical marvel. It's old, dated, and far from cutting edge.
A lot of this can definitely be reigned-in for tighter experiences on consoles. Some baffling decisions on the optimization here across all consoles. That Xbox Series analog deadzone needs fixed yesterday! How did that get past QA? Also, what's the deal with unlocked framerates on last-gen consoles? Are they insane?
We definitely do need more original ideas, but remakes such as this aren’t lazy cash grabs. You can tell a lot of love was put into this game and I’m fine with it.
I think the modes they have for targeting 60 fps but even though "resolution mode" will not be anywhere close to that was the right choice. Next consoles with backwards compatibility will let this run great in "resolution mode" as right now, it's best to use "frame rate mode".
@@balraj8288 if you’re on PS5 you need to turn off Lens Distortion in the settings. It will drastically clean up the image for now and it looks good without it.

PS5 Version here. So,it doesn't matter if I play on Frame rate or Resolution mode, the game has its hiccups, like stutter. @@bromanoski it even plays well on steam deck. 30 fps no problem and you can get a pretty stable 40 fps with the right settings. Just a solid win all around.
They need to start making all games for current gen consoles only ( PS5/ Series X ) and forget about cross gen, this game should look much better than it does, even though I am loving it on Series X so far.
Regardless of the issues this remake is up there with Deadspace as the greatest remakes on the current gen machines, whatever platform you are playing on this game is incredible, having a lot of fun with it, Capcom will patch these issues pretty soon given their track record.
I played it on Xbox Series X with the day one patch. I am going to assume the day-one patch mitigated all the issues that Digital Foundry reported. I play primarily on frame rate with ray tracing and hair strands enabled. I haven't noticed any FPS drops, although sometimes the audio will bug out very rarely.
I play on PS5 (Resolution + RT) on a non-VRR TV and tbh, despite hearing so much about sub-60 fps drops in games on this channel and how it ruins the experience, most of the time I never notice it. I did disable lens distortion/chromatic aberration but besides that, I just don't "feel" choppiness and the likes from sub-60 fps (especially in RE remakes). Just always feel smooth to me.
@@OzzieOzbalik I can't measure it but from digital foundry: Series X 1800p and PS5 1944p upscaled 4k. I just tell you the fix for the PS5 version overall frizzy look.

PS4 Pro is my most loved console, specially if you have one that is not the black one. I have the white version and I think it looks gorgeous. I think of playing it for 2 years more and then sell it and buy a PS5 Slim with better aesthetics and smaller footprint. The router looking PS5 can "go straight to hell".
8:37 Disagree with the options, I think they're great to have. You have a point about the optimization of the framerates need to be better but I don't think having the options themselves are bad. Console needs to have more settings, not less. I will also agree with a 30FPS cap is a good option to have if one wants a lower but more stable experience, even if I will never ever touch such an option due to preference.
I really would’ve loved to see this game on One X. That would’ve been an interesting comparison with the Series S. Damn OG XB1, it’s a shame that, that console is the reason the One X misses out.
The deadzone issue on xbox series is a non issue if you own an elite. But need to be patched for normal controller. Capcom need to patch this asap. Can't be a hard fix.
If they dont patch it, I will totally regret this purchase. Its nonplayable for me, why should I aim so bad when in previous Resident Evil games I were almost an aim God! Im expecting a patch, update or something. This is seriously bad!
Thank you for the tip with the Elite. Changed the sensitivity curve to aggressive in the controller app and it's smooth as hell now. Anyone on XSX with an Elite 2 do it, it's a good fix. Still annoying they didn't optimize this in the first place though.
I'm 63 and have spent thousands of hard earned pounds on import consoles and gaming pcs and then came res4 which made me buy a game cube and is by far my favourite game..I now have an xbox series x and have been counting the days down for this game to get updated and having listened to digital foundry I am putting off buying it until the play mechanics has been sorted..I'm so disappointed in what I've heard because others give the game a faultless score but I believe in this channel
Exactly my own situation. I already regret my purchase because I love Resident Evil, however the issues with the controls on Xbox are making it unplayable to me. I get to the village section and they absolutely ruined me couple of times, of course when half of the right analog stick is nonfunctional during the whole aiming!
While VRR displays are obviously a great thing, it seems to me some devs use them as a cop-out to cut down on performance tweaking. The vast majority of console gamers these days will probably not have a VRR display, though. So, games really should offer a properly tuned locked frame rate mode, because for most people everything else will just be a choppy mess.
Even FINDING a vrr display is hard. It's no where on most of the descriptions of TV's. I've looked and looked and looked. It's never on the boxes. It's never advertised in store or anything. And I'm on a budget. I don't need the highest end. I just want vrr, hdr, 4k. Don't care about 120. Judging by these analyses as well as what we saw in the demo, it kind of feels like this game could have benefited from like a few extra months of polish for all the different versions of the game. Given how many platforms and modes are on offer, I would have thought that there would have been a bigger time gap between the demo and the game release itself. This could have possibly offered up additional feedback and maybe could have been implemented by release but alas we're just stuck waiting for patches which has become the norm for most modern games.
Why there is no Xbox one version? The base console could sure handle it, albeit lower resolution than ps4 and 30fps. As for x, it had the best versions for the previous titles.
Because Sony still sells a 10 year old console as their budget console. And xbox has a budget console. So Sony still has to release the game on ps4 while xbox is able to move on. While xbox could of made this game for xbox one im glad they didn’t. So ready to leave these old consoles in the past.
The deadzone issue on Xbox is really disappointing and it’s only because of DF and a couple other outlets that I knew to look out for it in the RE4 demo. It helped me make the decision to pick up RE4 for PS5 instead of my preferred Series X. I really hope this gets addressed.

So like Elden Ring before it, it seems the version with the smoothest frame rate is the PS4 version running on a PS5, locked 60 FPS in resolution mode.
Japanese engine technology is less about "having everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink (a la CP2077, Crysis)" and more about presenting an overall intended effect: Highly detailed small scale spaces in the case of RE engine.
When I tried the demo on a Series S I knew something didn't "felt right" with the aiming. Later found out it was because of the dead zone and acceleration. Not buying this one until they patch the controls.
Here’s hoping for performance and visual patches. Im still wondering which version of this to buy as I own both the PS 5 and X Box Series X. One review said there was an issue with the Series X version of this game where the controls felt heavier.
Both have issues. I would say as a positive for Xbox, if you have a VRR capable TV then the framerate is much smoother on Series X because of the superior VRR implementation.
Resolution mode on PS4 Pro looks so damn good for 2016 hardware. This is how you make use of the console, while limited on the CPU, the GPU really is a big jump from the vanilla console so high res pairs well....now only add 30fps lock ffs.

"Greatest remakes" They look barely any better than PS4 games lol. Lazy efforts, not what the PS5 should be capable of.
@@mikaelkarlsson8969 Well, how realistic is it that Capcom will adress these issues?
@@94Alexandro94 if alot of people complain about it they will. But sadly peoples standard seems so low knowdays and is satisfied with half baked shit.
I love the RE4 Remake on my PS4 Pro (Frame-Rate Mode) because I am use to the Nintendo Switch. No issues for me.
Since the was release after the end of the financial year, another month on the oven would only be beneficial for the game.
I have a questions, why not have a option to lock RE Engine games at 30? Maybe it is something on the engine? Like that checkboarding issues on the PS5?
I don't want to see games depending on fancy graphic features too much. It removes the artistic side of games because the devs don't need to think creatively like they did in the past. Not that this game doesn't look good, I just miss the days when developers came up with creative ways to depict a realistic scene.
If you play in performance mode and got blue, green and red dots flickering on the downside right of the screen. Deactivate depth of field and activate motion blur.
PS4 version is paying homage to RE4's port on PS2. It's cute like that.
They should have skipped the PS4 version also
I say the same.
Could have been more optimized strictly build for ps5.
Yes that would have been nice. I think now that PS5's have become very easy to get hopefully future games will stop with the cross-gen and do PS5 only I think it's time.
Let’s pray for Code Veronica Ps5 only 🙏🏼
No, they should’ve just locked the fps to 30 and worked harder on performance
I’m just glad that the game is playable on older hardware because I am not made of money. I don’t care about lower resolution (I care more about frame rate but on ps4 pro it seems ok)
You can't say that it runs sub 1080p and in the 20s on PS4 and say that it still a good experience...
If this was a Switch game you'd be flipping your shit about it.. 🤣😂🤣
7:34 Did Oliver just say that there's 8 different graphics modes on platforms other than Series S? Are we counting hair strand and ray-tracing options etc as separate modes now?
Edit: Yeah it seems we are.
Oliver is definitely the best member of DF. Keep up the good work!
Richard and John are my og favorite, been watching since the beginning!
The Ray Traced reflections in the Castle look pretty slick so that may be a reason to leave them on.
Xbox Series S is incredible !!!!!!!!!!
