I can't describe how grateful I am that you guys at DF are willing to edit together a 25 minute video just to analyse a single game's console ports. It's that sort of effort and dedication that makes you the best gaming channel on RUclips.
John cannot make a single video without throwing some old retro games knowledge which is cool and more entertaining than simple benchmark video
It's not a benchmark video, it's a technical analysis if you could not read the title.
gingataisen What does "foun" mean? Google didn't help.
@@mbsfaridi foun sounds like fun, it's not a real world or slang
cyberpunk 2099 You know what i meant dumb ass, I meant he puts effort in videos instead of just showing pixel count and frame rate analysis
iiTzDrunkPizza Hmmmm, Thanks!
"You'll notice some artifacts..."
Lara: Aha! *jingle*
Silly John, it's the whole point of the tomb raider.
I didn't expect such a big leap in visuals but damn, it's like night and day between this and Rise. Kudos to Eidos and Crystal Dynamics.
So basically they did an amazing job at giving everyone the absolute best performance and experience no matter which console version you have.
Barry Jenkins no
They should have bumped the resolution to 800p on xbox one
@@ajsingh4545 The resolution is 900p on Base Xbox.
Ya I know....and the frame rate is still bad.
AJ Singh no you’re just trying to be funny so you can get likes but got 0likes
Tomb Raider Underworld is still a gorgeous game, especially on PC
I don't know. While Legend and Anniversary looked marvelous for 2006/2007, Underworld always looked off to me, even for 2008. Like it was more than a PS2 game, but not a full 360/PS3 game. And then we got TR2013, which showed what a true X360/PS3 TR game could look like.
How can anyone watch this video and not be completely in awe of the level of craftsmanship on show. Gamers have never had it so good.
2 years later this is probably the best looking/performing game played on my PS4 pro
Better than The Last Of Us II?
@@MichaelLudden Character models are better on TLOU2, but the environments in Tomb Raider are blowing me away. Didn't expect it to look that great.
@@MichaelLudden yup, even it has 60 FPS mode which Tlou2 doesn’t have.
Playing at 4k almost Ultra settings, absolutely blown away, This is one of the most prettiest game i have seen on the PC, just incredible
I just started playing Shadow today because I noticed it was free on PS+ premium, and playing it at 4k and 60fps makes this game look and feel just incredible
Same; gonna start playing tomorrow 🔥
This was a great video!! Really detailed and loved how you did the comparison between the different consoles resolutions
John, great video buddy. Seriously fantastic look at the game, the engine and also appropriate call backs to previous iterations. Really enjoyable, keep it up.
aint nobody got time to see surfaces when a leopard chasing me
this is a very big upgrade coming from rise of the tomb raider. Good job eidos Montreal :)
darsirious *Raider
@@PremierLeagueProductions fixed
Totally agree a massive upgrade! If this video doesn't make you buy the game nothing will.
darsirious Why does the lighting look worse then (except on PC)?
25 fps is an upgrade? lmfao.
Your videos are high quality in case of explanation and style of fact delivery. It's always interesting to watch them.
You guys are awesome. Every time I go looking for comparisons and different console versions. Digital Foundry always delivers and shows what I want to know. Thank you.
Interesting how Digital Foundry didn't go deeper on the Audio side... That Dolby Atmos sure makes a huge difference.....🤔
Oh yeah, having that overhead sound when you first enter the jungle is so badass. I'm so glad I upgraded my receiver and speaker system
One of the best audios I've ever experienced in a video game, when you walk across a wooden bridge, you hear the cracks, the sounds of animals in the forest, fire, amazing.
I'm really impressed with the 60fps move on the XBONE. I'm looking forward to Alex's analysis of the PC version.
Excellent analysis as always. Very good job DF, keep up the good work!
Fantastic work Jon. Keep up the good work!
One of my favorite games of all time. Awesome in HDR and works well with mGPU (2x 1080 Ti's) with 95% scaling was incredible! I love exploring in games and this one was a treat.
Can't wait to play this on my X. That nearly locked 60fps looks like the way to go!
Another excelent review! Digital Foundry, you guys are the best!
Great content delivered, Digital Foundry. Fine work, as usual. Thank you!
Talk about preview coverages gone wrong...
Those preview graphics looked real bad and I wasn't feeling the game either...
Then the game comes out and voila!!!
Action is great, story is engaging and the graphics crisp...
And then you have the acknowledgement of Easy Allies and ACG!!!
This went from 'I don't care' to 'I absolutely need this' in a span of 3 days...
Good job Eidos Montreal...
Shuvam Ghosh Yep. I agree. Preview coverage was pretty bad and I wasn’t impressed. Then I played it. It’s a stunning looking game in the end.
I just hope that this doesn't hurt them in the long run...
Mankind Divided was great, but the sales didn't do justice...
I fear we won't get to see Garrett or Jensen anytime soon...
Hi John, I am a big fan of Digital Foundry and greatly appreciate your work.
I'm a bit late. But I feel that's always the case with Eidos Montreal games. The games always better (visually) on release. To be honest, I'd rather have that than a downgrade like many other games have.
Agreed. I was going to buy no matter what, but those with less leeway to buy potential flops...probably just didn't buy it at all. Marketing makes or breaks all games, including the greats and the absolute worsts.
People claimed the graphics were downgraded in this game but seeing it side by side with Rise, you can see the improvement.
Timothy Lewis The lighting looks worse. AA is much better. It’s especially visible since PC version looks noticeably better in the lighting area. It somehow looks artificial on consoles.
But not an improvement on Ryse
Just the aa alone it looks better...Graphically it looks shaper it has a photo realisitc look to it in alot of areas game looks clean
I have both Rise and Shadow on PC and Shadow looks much better IMHO (close up). Rise has that shimmer and a fuzzy general look (both are on 1080p high settings (just below Ultra (Very High)) and run pretty steady 60 fps except in towns.
Shadow can look much richer and in distance shots the mountains and trees look much more water color- cartoony while Rise has more realistic trees and mountains. Those are the differences I notice.
At some point i would look at them at 4k...1080p is eh now days even 1440p u would get a better view
Great review John, really love your work and knowledge about games.
He has a firm grasp on technology in video games for sure.
Please John, make a full analysis of the series with the behind each moment as you described in the introduction.
Good work man, as always!
This game looks amazing on a 4k tv with ps4 pro.
Yep. Sony XE90, resolution mode + HDR👍
Even better on a monitor with 4K HDR.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer it doesn't change, that game still looks amazing, he mentioned resolution of his TV and not the rendering resolution, so your answer was not needed
It's never 4k on ps4 pro. Ever
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer 1440p? Dude at least watch the video the resolution is 1872p
damn 2018 is a good year for gamers
And we didn't even break into 2019 yet lol
I'm expecting the Mayan apocalypse before 2019, everything I've been waiting for has been pushed to first half of 2019.
@@Ki77a_WhSpRz My wallet's already crying for February, and Microsoft still hasn't charged me for Red Dead Redemption 2 yet (which is this month, of course) lol.
This looks great. But is it any better, more involving, than the last two processions?
Loving the pc focused content keep up the good work DF. 👍👍👍😀
Great review. Looks like I’ll be picking it up
I hear Lara Croft: GO music in the background. I'm both surprised and very happy.
I got to give it to the Xbox one X, it's not a bad piece of kit for the price
hell no... pro and x are useless. if you want to play 4k buy a pc they are a lot stronger than this shity pro and xbox if you want play fhd use the standard ps4 because it has the best games out there
alphaomega887654321 As a PC owner they are incredible for the price to performance you get you need a £400 Geforce 1070 alone to beat the Xbox One X.
@@alphaomega887654321 shut up... To get a pc that does better than the x u have to spend alot more money.
shut up
I have a gaming PC but also a pro and 1X and I almost always am gaming on the consoles when HDR is available. HDR on PC sucks so bad and it's a bigger visual upgrade than going from 1440p (what I normally play at) to 4k on my TV.
very nice video!!
John, you earned two cookies for using Lara Croft GO soundtrack in the background. Amazing game!
You don't need raytracing for stunning graphics! This looks sick!
This game looks stunning on all consoles X1X is completely insane for that price point.
it's weird that out of the 4 reviews i've watched for this game no one mentions the graphics, but the graphics for this game look absolutely amazing.
Great work here. I’m a game dev and just found your channel. Great breakdown.
11:19 Oh my! I'm in love!
Playing on the X1S, it's very snappy and smooth. Only issue I get is with scene takedowns. Otherwise it's very clear and responsive.
I love this kind of videos from Digital Foundry, one can tell the passion and effort they put into it. I'm totally happy with the PC version. It's stable and i can play maxed out at 1080p and even choose between M+K or XO controller. Only thing i wish i had is a higher resolution display tho.
good review!
Can't wait to play this tomorrow!
Tomorrow?
Does that include steam?
Only for those who preordered the special editions of the game
@@morrowmike That's some shady bullshit.
MadFinnTech One handed playthrough?
Anyone know the name of the background sound starting at 15:40 ? Thanks
Great analysis, definitely picking it up friday.
Another stunning indepth DF presentation 👍
This game looks good on all platforms, amazing job
"...some occasions which cause the framerate to *DIP AND TEAR*..."
I see what you did there, John
YOU ARE HUGE, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS
A great deep review, many thanks.
Thank you very much for this explanations. Can't wait for your Shadow of the Tomb Raider's PC analysis.
*PS4 Pro doesn't hold a locked 60 on smooth frame rate mode*
John: I don't recommend going with this option, too much judder
*Xbox One X doesn't hold a locked 30 normally*
Also John: I have to give the nod to this.
This is why subjective comments bug me in analysis videos >.>
The Pro does an *awful* job at keeping 60 FPS in Performance Mode while the One X only has some minor drops, that's why it's worthy of criticism.
On the Res Mode, both consoles can't really keep a stable 30 FPS with Xbox One X struggling a bit more.
There's a difference.
I understand that but it's still a difference that's only subjectively better for those who can't stand judder above 30 fps as opposed to the kind seen on the Xbox One X for its 30 fps cap.
@@VGDocs
It's a bit different.
If you can stand judder you can definitely play at 40-50 FPS with a triple-buffer solution, that doesn't mean it can replace an almost stable 60 FPS, which will always look and play significantly smoother.
Compared to the One X framerate, the one of the Pro is considerably less pleasant at best (if you can stand judder) and straight up terrible if you can't.
As for the Res Mode, again, there's never too much of a difference, neither is perfect and Pro only has softer drops when they occur.
I wasn't comparing 40-50 fps to a solid 60, I was comparing it to a not-solid 30 and how the opinion changes from clearly going against 40-50 but being fine with a 30 that's not stable. Also you say less pleasant if you can stand judder but once again that's subjective. I whole-heartedly disagree with the idea of 40-50 being worse than even a lock solid 30 in a lot of games. The gameplay itself just doesn't hold up at 30 when you compare it to the much more responsive 40+. Sure, the judder is noticeable but the lower consistent frame rate is even more noticeable when it comes to the gameplay because it updates the player more slowly and the latency is noticeably worse.
I can't stand drops below 30 or drops below 60 so idk, I'm kind of disapointed in both versions. I NEED a stable framerate in either form to enjoy a game.
Never gave it a chance before, but now it's free on ps plus.
seen that :]
Awesome job Digital!!!
Thanks for another awesome Digital Foundry video! This was just what i had been waiting for and needed to see. Great work!
The game looks amazing and wonderful on all consoles, but there is no doubt about that it is the Xbox one X one should play it on if possible, i wish i had one but i will have to be satisfied with playing it on my Xbox one S instead.
I'll be playing on the Xbox One X
Can't wait :D
I got the game today :P but i have to finish prey first 😆
Have fun!
great adventures classic series thanks Eidos for keeping it not a lot of studios survive nowdays like viseral games rip dead space T.T
excellent video.
I was looking everywhere about input lag and you mentioned it. Thank you alot. I will probably buy it for PC and play it on my 4k tv.
I have to strongly disagree about the HDR, at least on PS4 Pro. Even with the game's brightness setting all the way down on an OLED calibrated correctly, black levels are almost never actually black, but dark grey. It looks like thick fog covering the screen in just about every scene. Also, there's terrible banding in the darkest and brightest areas of the screen, as if they calculated their colors in 8bit, and simply reverse-tonemapped that to the HDR space. The actual brightness of highlights were great, especially in the finale, but I couldn't get over how ugly the look of the HDR was overall. I've seen many people with the PS4 version of the game agree.
You do realize that in real life you never see full black right?
@@DenisLiasis You're arguing a really pointless thing here. We see incredibly close to black, far closer than even 1 notch up on a 12bit Dolby Vision encoding would give you, so we can tell when black levels are wrong. That's why OLED exists.
Besides that. Any raised black levels in a game are going to add to any non-black we're seeing to our eyes. Why would you want to unnecessarily add to that, making things more washed out than they need to be?
@@AndyGilleand umm the game is targeting reality, and in real life you don't see true black with your eyes even in pitch black areas.
Lower your standards a bit in life to enjoy things. And if this really bothers you so much, switch to SDR. Which has deep inky blacks.
HDR is here to bring crushed shadows up so you can see detail in shadows, and to save overexposed areas so you can see detail even in there. That's how HDR works sweetheart
@@DenisLiasis No, this isn't anywhere close to reality. Most HDR gets it right. In this game, things that should be realistically dark shadows appear really bright grey.
HDR reveals detail in shadows while also making those shadows more realistically darker. That's because the panels are capable of deeper blacks and HDR uses a higher bit depth, which allows you to keep deep shadows without losing defail. It's SDR that usually raises shadows to a more washed out level compared to real life, because low bit depth and poor compression usually cause issues with dark shadows in SDR. This game looks like really bad SDR in the shadows.
@@AndyGilleand i don't see that in sdr. My tv is sdr and I have it set to muted colours, muted contrast muted everything for a realistic image.
That's me though. You can always play with the in-game brightness setting. Maybe you have it too high
Very impressive and looks gorgeous on the Xbox one X (pc gamer). I’ll get this on PC. I hope it’s a good game either way.
So terrible in ps4?
@Caffeinated Critic lol no base xbox is the worst
@@voodoo9077 watch the video, the PS4 has better frame rate on the 4k mode.
Looks good on the PS4 too. Almost no difference. You definitely won't tell the difference when shooting enemies.
+martin cabrera The resolutions though; the PS4 Pro has 1872p with checkerboard rendering, the X has 2016p native. Neither matches the consoles' native output resolution. I kinda do miss the enriched mode from Rise though; it was clearly the best choice for maximum visual quality. The resolution doesn't mean everything.
Very good review
Don't know if it's too much of a hassle, but it'd be cool if you put timestamps in your longer videos, DF. Thanks for all your work!
My PC is waiting to destroy this game at midnight tonight, can’t wait.
For me the Legend, Anniversary and Underworld is the games I enjoy more. The newer games look way more difficult and it seems like Lara is always taking a beating and falling a lot.
Combat is possibly harder than those games but if anything they're easier and more on rails.
Great video! Can't wait to play this on my x where games always look best. Looks like I'll have to pause spiderman. For a few months now haha so many good games!
@Jack M that's why I don't discriminate and have both consoles especially since they are so cheap these days. Pro for the Sony exclusives and xbox for all multiplat games and exclusives. The x demolished the pro and xbox live is heaps better for multiplayer.
I think that we reached the point that you have to zoom in 300x to see a difference.
There is absolutely no visible difference during gameplay with stuff moving.
I understand that you as a channel have to point out the differences, but man if they are really hard to notice.
I'm pretty sure most people won't notice any difference
2:10 Augmentations, Deus ex.. i see what you did there John ;)
Great game to be honest, very well done by Eidos Montreal
great review....just finished this game , it was fantastic, played on pc at 3440x1440 with a gtx 1080 , i played it on high setting with a few tweeks and just about got 60fps.
Heck Yeah this is the video I've been waiting on I can't wait to pick this game up tonight got the steel book edition pre-ordered and ready to go. Gonna be playing on the One X only question is whether I want to play this at a native 4K 1st or at 60FPS lol either way this game is gonna be phenomenal.
I’m getting this for my Xbox one x
Me 2
I ate nachos just now!
Bruh it looks sick on my X
I buy a x for this game haha
I've got this on my PS4 Pro. My Xbox One X is now my 360 emulator at this point lol
I seriously hope they don't reboot Tomb Raider again and just continue with this series. A "classic" version reboot wouldn't play well anymore these days, these three games are simply better. I understand that John is a retro fan, but most gamers aren't and I respect the older games for their upsides...we've come a long way and it would be a shame to take steps back towards a lesser experience imo.
I've always wondered what was wrong with the foliage in rise of the tomb raider, why it looked kind of pixelated despite using smaa and now you've answered my answered my answer. I thought something was wrong with my game this whole time lmao
What an amazing looking game. I'll definitely use the 60 fps mode on my X, framerate matters much more to me than resolution. Especially if the controls feel "heavy". I love the reinvented Tomb Raider series so can't wait for this one.
X FTW!
I’m off next week from work so I can’t wait to play this on my Xbox X.
Gen ED88 that’s sad
Who gets time off work to play a game lol
Garbage Gang I’m scheduled to be off from work you idiot not knowing game comes out this week and even if I did took off from work to play how’s that sad? I enjoy my hobby...you are sad getting mad or upset over a strangers decision wether he works or not to play games.

@@dickyboy2315 I think he misspelled "wether" lol

22:03 more focused on puzzles? That's the best news I've heard all day!
when you see how far we’ve come, it’s hard to believe people still whine and complain about graphics.
Well, that's not a healthy way of thinking about development either. Just because we've come a long way...doesn't mean we shouldn't expect more quantum leaps and let developers stagnate. A balanced view is better than just extremist points of view.
Compared to last gen, the system requirements have increased drastically compared to the improvement in visual fidelity, except for few games like red dead , gears 5 etc.
Gonna get it on my X! Can't wait!
Is there a glossary with all the tech terms you use on the videos?
Great video!
Having both base model consoles, I chose to pre-order the XBOX version, since the last few PS4 games made it sound like a jet engine. Minor fps dips appear to be across the board anyway. One day I'll probably get a ONE X, and the PC version of the game, when it's on sale. Great video, thanks!
Game looks good in all console tho. But the Dolby Atmos ability on the X does it for me. Cannot wait
You gotta go with the Xbox one x here
*This tops all reviews and analysis of Shadow of the Tomb Raider!*
I absolutely loved the last two games. Can't wait to play this game on the X1X.
I got just over 5GB update for my preorder of SotTR - did all other console versions get this? I'm on the X.
Can't wait for this, luv'd RotTR!
GZazzy I got the same update yesterday for the Croft Edition on the X.....not too sure what this update is
verityz - yeah same here i bought the same edition - wonder if its added textures for the X?
I got the same update, but I pre-ordered Shadow of the Tomb Raider for my regular Xbox One (the original VCR-sized model). I wonder if it's a performance patch.
I got the update also, and I bought the $89.99 digital version.
InJeffable - thanks for the info! Seems like a performance patch/update by the size of it.
Xbox's Pubg 1.0 update is here , pls make the video
Karanveer Singh Kalsi I got the game on release and it was shit specially since I have a Xbox One x and its preview hdr was trash. I got on it a few days ago and holy shit it’s playable it feels so smooth there’s no lag definitely 60fps and draw distance has increased and textures feel like their ultra. The loot boxes are still trash but the game is playable!
What if you set the Xbox settings to 1080p in the settings on the Xbox 1x and then play a Xbox enhance video game would you have better results on FPS at all?
Pardon the ignorance, but it’s the first time I notice the red bars in framerate graphs. Does it represent the torn frames?
Great videos as always. You guys are a boon to video game coverage.
Very impressive work from Eidos Montreal. I just wish SE wouldn't be so desperately scummy with implementing DENUVO DRM on this game on PC.
I'm still going to buy it tbh.
When was Uncharted 4 released? And why does it look better than this game released in 2018?
I think both of them has their strengths. Uncharted looks fantastic with all the facial animations and a very detailed but „clean“ look. Tomb raider looks a bit rougher overall, but it fits to the jungle environment.
I had fun with all of the uncharted and newer Tomb Raider games :)
John, I really like what you are doing recently.
I like how Tomb Raider gives you all kinds of options in visuals, gameplay and settings to choose from
Realistic and Sexy Lara Croft. I love it.
she is cute
Burak KARAKUZEY lol they nerfed her boobs so badly
Realistic maybe, sexy? nah.
was there something unrealistic with the previous Laras?
Only by modern "pc" standards.. and only according to a vocal minority.
Personally speaking, I am going to miss classic Lara.
Ill watch the video after trying the game on friday on the one x!!! I know ill have a blast
A question to you guys at DF, does the implementation of HDR in games make the fan in a ps4 to overwork itself? I get the feeling that a lot of later games have this inpact in at least my ps4 pro but I have heard a lot of people having exactly the same problem.
Thanks in advance and thank you for your great videos.
Would like to know what settings the consoles are running at compared to PC I'm guessing High.
