Love the community building around this game, this video essay along with other analysis videos I've watched show how tightly woven the story actually is and that for most questions the answers are there. I'm glad you talked about how when The Other One returns he appears to have changed his views quite a bit to be more in line with the affection The One had for these people and their art, because that part made me connect something: I think the reason for the major shift is that he finally saw how powerful the art actually was when it _literally resurrected him_. Like you said, even if it's maybe not "great art". Excellent work on this.
Thank you very much! It really is such a rich a game, I feel like I only scratched the surface here. I love that additional perspective on it-- it makes the healing the one and the other one do together so much more personal.
Loved it! I played the game the way I browse the web - just like I open a million tabs scrolling through twitter and then go back and look at them later, I was mashing through match cuts unlocking clips and intending to watch them in order afterwards. I reached the ending cutscene way, way before I had any idea what was going on, and found it hard to piece together the story afterwards; you've done a great job laying it all out clearly here. That said I really enjoyed the game when I played it! Also enjoyed your thoughts on the meaning of the game, that sort of thing really goes over my head when I'm playing/watching something! I think I remember Ambrosio never got made *because* Arthur Fisher ran away with the footage, but I don't remember if we're told why at any point!
That would totally make sense!! I could see it, Arthur really seemed to resent Melissa as Ambrosio went on and she went from very demure to confident and self possesed. After reading some more about other people's experience I am feeling super lucky that we hit on the twist as early as we did (maybe like 45 mins in?) We got a hint from a podcast that helped us a lot
Great video! Thanks for showing me this game. The One is so magnificently creepy because it looks so out of place, but mostly because it stares directly at the camera (the player) in a context where it shouldn't. It gives me the chills! Also, I might just be me connecting dots that aren't there, but the first movie (Ambrosia) is thematically about "breaking the law" as much as the second one, which you analyse it to be. I read this in how The one plays the temptation that makes the monk break his vows. Also, the scene where the left part is a close-up of the monk lying on the ground, and the woman in a gown and headdress entering from the right in the middle-ground, making her appear much smaller than the monk, instantly reminded me of The Odyssey. That scene resembles the part where Odysseus has killed the cyclops, Polyphemus. This both adds up with how the narrative of the scene in the movie is that the woman has come to deliver the the monk his fate (the woman having caused his death), and also how we aren't given a name, but just to call that immortal being "The One" and how Odysseus tricks Polyphemus by calling himself "No one" (which plays into a prophecy from an oracle, "No One will kill Polyphemus"). If you want to over analyse this, you can again relate this to the last scene where The One in-fiction is going to take over (kill us), the player from having watched its death on a screen, and how the technology forces us to only "see" from one perspective (eye) like a cyclops.
AHH THANK YOU MIKO! I have found a few other vtubes who do video essays too!! OkAs (ruclips.net/channel/UCrEE5m4Qx1vK27GLp0wgH3Q) just did one on silent hill!
I feel Hitchcock stealing the Ambrosio Negatives was supposed to be a "Lost legacy" thing? Man mentions how he's falling off in his last movies despite his great fame when the One interviews him in the Reversed Marissa Interview, so him realising his last movie is shit and deciding to erase it, so to create the legend of a lost great movie for SPOOKY reasons he makes the movie disappear, because art you never saw is more legendary than one you've seen.
35:42 is the game metaphysical?... You learning the old version of the meme word, the idea, is her being in you. But you have to choose control or not.
I think Amy watched Minsky because she wanted to know if John and Marissa were having a relationship during that time.
Ooo that totally makes sense I like this theory
