Nice work and a lot of good info here!! I would just recommend a few things to people seeing this. Double check your ring gap in the cylinders first. NEVER reuse the old lifter trays! It's what causes many failures as it crack or loosens and lifter has too much play or spins destroying lifter and cam. 24:08 lifter is wobbling (should be TIGHT fit). Prime the new oil pump. There is a hole on the side of block to fill it with oil once installed and/or crank motor with ignition off to get pressure before starting. Hope it is still running good for ya.
I have a 08 G35 too and these motors are waaay easier like you saw for yourself! Good job on a budget build!
Thanks for that Michael...
Yeah that lifter should NOT be wobbling. That's BAD.
I know you primed the oil pump before you started it. I didn't see the oil gauge move
Great job, just watch your oil pressure, if it drops it’s your oil pickup tube seal. I like your phone taped to a beaker bar hack for the head bolts degrees. Thanks for sharing.
Great video!
🤔 so a harmonic balancer is used by evenly distributing weight to balance things, but you knocked what seemed to me to be a pretty substantial piece off of it therefore affecting the balance of the balancer itself. Would that not cause problems? If it is negligible then ok, send it. I’m looking into rebuilding an LM7 myself for the first time so I’m just curious.
Dont comment much but this was a good story man! I wish vq’s were this simple 😂.
Appreciate you brother! For sure but still gotta love the VQ haha
How much was the complete rebuild kit?
21:00 Did you verify piston ring gaps? I didn't see that part. Rings were installed when block was at shop.
Did you measure ring gap?
Also centering the oil pump?🤔
Only complaint, you said that you’re not a mechanic. Ummmmm, you just rebuilt and installed an LS engine into a truck… and it runs perfectly! Even though you are not certified, I’d say you’ve just became a master mechanic with this visual display, man! Looking good down there . Keep up the good work Aaron!
Really appreciate it man thank you for the good words 🙏🏻🙏🏻
An ls is the easiest thing to build somebody could but their first set of tools and go slap one together with youtube. Only complaint is have is for $200 more could've hadda da chop chop
@@austinbrown924 Wow! I might need to get an LS and try it out. I watched Aaron breakdown and build a VQ 35 engine. Troubleshooting and correcting until it was turbo'ed and lovely! It was a lot of work compared to the LS. 2 days? Really? That truck will now run forever. I hear what you are saying though. In that little time, Aaron could of added some more upgrades to really get that hokey pokey action with the HD. LOL but its good to haul and tow now for about 20 more years.
Do you have to steel stamp main
Few things, most minor, one serious.
You should be using lubricant for honing.
** VERY BAD **
All of the rings should be checked for end gap. Rings expand and if the ends touch, the ring as may happen if thr endine is overheated, the ring will be instantly destroyed and it may take the piston with it and could also badly score the cylinder.
You ruined the BALANCER. You could end up hurting your engine running that, as it's out of balance.
Replace the harmonic balancer it's going to be out of balance you'll have issues
I learned this the hard way, when I was about 16 after the local mechanic shop told me it would be fine, spun a bearing about two weeks later, found out cheap advice is usually worth exactly what you pay for it!!!
Looks like you did not check end gap on the rings.
The rings expand a lot from hear and if the ends touch, the ring is instantly destroyed and often takes the piston with it. Also may seriously gouge the bore.
Don't hone dry. Always use lubricant.
What cherry picker are you using
Want to so this to my H2 Hummer
Didn’t you need to align the oil pump with feeler gauges?
I also was wondering about that?🤔
Thanks for the video! I just unloaded a an LQ4 for a 4.8 to 6.0 swap. Woohoo!
Tryed that website I'm looking to rebuild my 6.0 can u give me a website to order from
I shared your nervousness and excitement on your first start up! Good job!!
I bought this truck! It still runs great
Ummm, why did you not lube the cylinders when you were “honing” them? Good way to completely ruin a block. At minimum us wd40 better to use honing out.
Don't use wd40 as honing oil .... for beginners deglaze your cylinder bore with ball style hone dipped in engine oil. Messy but works well. Wipe down with paper towel and wd40 is okay to verify progress.
One thing this guy didn't discuss, proper cleaning of block and parts being reassembled is super critical. I world hot tank block first. Wash, rinse, machine, final wash rinse before assembly. Pro shops have massive machine they use kind of like a dishwasher for engines. I've seen many engines fail early due to improper cleanup during rebuild.
Also this guy wasn't very generous with his assembly lube ... I like to be sure. Lube and oil on everything that slides or rotates, then prime pump and pressurize system before firing up. Why put all these new parts in only to damage them on a dry start?
Bud I wasn’t saying use wd40 I said at minimum just to help if you don’t have anything.
Best content I have seen in a very long time :) so good and so fun! :)
Thanks so much really appreciate it!
How is dnj ? Is it good quality? Just ordered some to rebuild a genesis coupe engine but couldn’t find reviews
A lot of builders stand behind dnj, So that’s enough for me I’m gonna order the same rebuild kit for my lq9.
Are those piston rings pre gapped?
Dude this is the best LS build video I've seen, and it's even better because you're a VQ guy. Also, smart idea on using the iphone compass as an angle gauge - great as long as you can keep the bolt vertical. You got a link for the whole rebuild kit? How much did the kit cost?
Much appreciated man! I don’t have a link for it but it’s the DNJ rebuild kit. Whole thing cost me roughly $1000 including machine shop charges to polish and check the crank
Enjoyed your information, good job brother 💪🏾
Hey, man.. I'm glad you had your truck back on track. I felt it when you said to your neighbor that you need your truck\whip back! Congratulations, bro . I'm subscribing and savin' this vid. BLESSED
Hell yeah brother I really appreciate the support 🙏🏻💯
So funny and typical, white man with red hair talks normal until the guy across the street comes over, I thought to help, but not, but red starts talking completely different then before and right after, And please tell me those weren't big hammer marks on the harmonic balancer. That I saw you install on this., please say that ain't true..., if so in a month or less you will try this again..
Wow you make me want to rebuild my 6.0 now. But it can’t be that easy. Right?
No cap fuckin around with vq stuff for years was dumb. I went turbo ls and never looked back
How is your engine running now that it’s been some time? Thanks!
Still super strong and fuel efficient
I'm not a mechanic either I'm a excellent part puller🧐
Did you even gap them? Looks like they went straight from the packaging to the piston.
Gapping the rings, centering and shimmying the oil pump? Checking the clearance on all the bearings? I hope the engine last 🤔
@@crw3673 Yeah he did not check any clearances. Just sent it....
@@SOLDOZERthe truck runs great and has no issues. I bought it and it pulls cars/my 7k lb boat like nothing
pre gapped rings??
How do those pistons compare to oem?
Hey man I’m also looking at rebuilding my LQ4 and I’m curious where you got that DNJ rebuild kit from, I’m having trouble finding a good website to purchase it from. Any help is appreciated, I hope my rebuild goes as smoothly as yours, keep it up man!
Appreciate it man! Got mine from partsology.com good luck!
@@AaronNewman thanks!
Nice job bud
Well I feel completely confident now swapping my 4.8 to a 6.0 if you just did pretty smoothly without any major mishaps and then told us once you got ready to start it up and let us know your fuel pressure gauge wasn’t working lol. I thought daaayuuuum playa! You’re 2500 has a stock fuel pressure gauge? Nope, my man didn’t realize he was looking at the oil pressure not fuel pressure gauge until after it started haha. I love it! Good job bro. Videos like yours really helps guys doing hobby auto work with confidence knowing they have something to reference by video/audio that they can understand vs the damn owners guide.
5:00 Why start replacing bearings if the block isn't cleaned inside and out? Have all the oil passages been flushed? This could become a short lived rebuild.
Shop took care of all that. Sold the truck but I think it has over 20k on the rebuild now
nice video bro we want to see more g video!
I am just as happy as you are bro!!!!
dawg, i’m thinking bout swappin my ‘09 hyundai genesis 4.6L with this LQ4 Engine. my engine on the genesis got a rod knock so i’m kind of thinking of doing something more exciting and this is the one i’m going for. definitely going to use this vid for some references. how’s the engine holding up tho a YEAR LATER? great video tho fam!🤝🏽
You inspire me and motivate me to jump into it bro coming from the g community ✊🏽💯
More like the LGBT community
G as in gay? G.i.? Or g body??
number one fan here, you're great mechanic haha
😂😂
Good content.... only complaint is why does everyone have to be a DJ... i have to keep playing with the volume in order to not piss off everyone else in the house
Word dude I'm ready to drop a 6.0 in my 1500 paired with a nv4500. hope she's sill growling like she should be
5:30 I'm hopeful the machine shop took care of the cleaning prior to bearing installation. Probably saved you lots of money in the long run.
Going to rebuild my 03 soon, its got 350,000 miles on it now, at the same time I'm going to go through the 4L80E and put a monster in a box in it
23:30 This reddish color on oil pan and windage tray is a red flag. It should rub off fairly easily.
I am pulling the engine and my transmission out right now and going to rebuild my 6.0 LS from my 2002 2500 hd. Very good video for references. Aaron where can I find all of the torquing sequences and values for all of the bolts for my engine? Do I just contact GM for the specs?
What part of south Florida you in bro? I’m in Miami!
Was this a junkyard motor? Or was it machines ?
Nice work man! You make it looks fun and ‘easy’
Do you have the parts number for the engine rebuild kit.
Nice job man good shit how many miles did the engine have before the rebuild ?
U did that 👌🏿now u just need two get that Scanner to reset the mileage
Nice, a little thread lock on the lifter tray bolts is always a good idea!
damn no more g?:(
Of course more G had a video on it last week! 🤙🏻
@@AaronNewman yayy
do you have a Link for the rebuild kit?
I know that feel when the FedEx truck pull up.
Thats strait. Im original from Ft.Lauderdale. my wifes sister is in Port St.Lucie. i now live in North Carolina. I am working on my first swap. Ls3/6L80 in a 03' Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Cylinder head Depot did alot of work for us back in the 90's and early 00's. I lived in Broadview Park and a bunch of other places lol. GEORGIA PIG BOY!!!!!! Lol
I went to South Plantation. I graduated in 1994.
عملك كان جيد وواضح وانت فعلآ مكانيكي من الدرجه الأولى احسنت تعليقك كان جيد واعجبني كثيرآ انك تسعى الى التنضيف بدقه كافيه. اخيك من السعوديه
Thank you brother!
🤍🤍
@@AaronNewman Must be cool, as a RUclipsr, to get international attention like this. I've rebuilt a few engines but never recorded, edited, uploaded, responded to comments, and all the rest that goes with the RUclips stuff. You did a great job!
Really good camera angles , your my hero
When did you install the core plugs?
Something I would have done differently is shim the oil pump and prime it. Install new lifter trays and check ring gap and bearing clearances. external knock sensors those valley ones seem to always have issues. How's the engine running still good?
I'm curious to know the status of the truck as well
Can we get an update? Any problems? Is she pulling under heavy loads yet? Any long-distance trips?
I sold the truck last year but she’s still driving strong over 15k miles on it 💪🏻
What’s the update on this truck!
Sold it but it’s still running got like 25k on the rebuild strong
@@AaronNewmanglad to hear that, I just finished my 6.0 rebuild and had the first start up today. The oil pump gave me trouble but she’s purring now. I wanted to ask what did you do for a break in? Also highway use?
Hey sorry to bother you again lol but I’m also wondering where you found your connecting rods? I’m debating on just reusing my old connecting rods but I’m not sure what the best route to take would be.
Found some refurbished ones on eBay they were cleaned and inspected and measured idk the seller though
Where’d you order the kit from?
Amazing smooth good job 👍
You did a really good job. I learned alot.
LS swap the g35 man
Great video! You are amazing and detailed
i'm impressed. Good work.!!
Nice build!
Great job.
Nice video!
Good Job man!
Nice job!!!
Eyyyy you’re back !
In reference to the tick at the end. I saw somewhere that I need to put the pushrods back onto the lifters they came from. That ware on the rods has to match the lifter. I honestly don't think it matters THAT much but that could explain the tick.
The tick went away after it warmed up and never came back. I think it was just some debris in there. Changing the oil multiple times probably helped gather all the gunk and get it out. But I put new lifters to the old rods so just threw em' in!
@@AaronNewman oh I gotcha. Mine does the same tick at cold temp. I just tell myself it's the sticker on the fan warming up.
This should be high school mechanics curriculum. Great content to get kids stoked and ready for a rebuild. Great video my man.
Started acting darker around the ghetto neighbor 😂😂😂 good video though bro good work
Aaron I have a question...
I've never rebuilt an engine before ever but I have the tools to do it with.
My question is I've always heard I needed to take a engine I want rebuilt to a machine shop to get it looked over any tips? I'm confused? Looks like you just cleaned it and put in the new parts?
A machine shop will look at the block and inspect it for imperfections. If the engine got hot at any point and creates warped spot, the machine shop can look at that and fix it. That’s why it’s good to have a good reputable shop that can do that for you
I've always heard the dingle ball hones give a better cross hatch and are better to use...
Hall homes are for cylinders known to be perfectly round and not tapered, like right after machining. The hone showed in this video is what you’d want to use in a budget rebuild. My .02
Ball hones*^
@@timbebel4331Ball hones deglaze and leave a cross hatch. Hones with stones like in this video remove more metal but can easily create tapered cylinder bore. If your block is headed to real engine machine shop for hot tanking and cam bearing install why not let them line hone your mains, hone your cylinders straight and round. While you are there let them polish the crank and pick bearings to use. Then order pistons to fit your newly machined block.
Now you will have something worth the effort or a rebuild.
