How NOT to do a budget LS engine rebuild - pt 1

- It's time for a budget LS engine rebuild! I'm refreshing the LQ9 LS 6.0 Gen III engine in my 2002 Cadillac Escalade, and as usual, this Flawless Plan isn't likely to go the way I intend...

Rad!! I did the same steam port upgrade to my truck when I had it apart. Glad to see I wasn't the only one. Yeah no need to go back through the throttle body 😂
Just a tip, diesel is GREAT at removing sludge and burnt oil. If you can run a quart through the motor before tearing down and keep a small moving tote near by with 5 gallons in it. You can soak your parts for 20minutes and pull them out clean CLEAN
Before I go and watch the next part of this series, I want to make sure I thank you for making this video. I just got done rebuilding my gen 3 LM7 and am facing the same issue, for the second time. Like you, I tried to keep it budget friendly and measured everything except the cam....I wonder what your next video will reveal.
Love the safety toes on the shoes!
And the safety squints!
That ITR in the background tho 😍
I pressure washed mine and everything is ok so far :-)
Great video. Install my first set of cam bearing last week, wasn’t bad at all! Definitely gotta gap those rings. I had to learn the hard way!
Wait...there's a way to learn that isn't the hard way?!
I'm rebuilding my 02 LQ4 right now. Mine locked up at 275k cause the doorman oil cooler lines I put on a month prior failed at the worst possible time. 4/8 rod bearings spun and welded to the crank but the mains managed to escape unscathed. Got a 4 inch stroke forged crank to go in there with forged rods and pistons. Sure it might of been a little cheaper to buy a used one but I like the route of having a fresh rebuilt engine thats a 408 stroker
Did you ever figure out the oil pressure issue? Could be cam retainer plate
Did you pressure oil prime the engine before you installed and started the engine?
Try running 10w 30 oil instead of the 5w 30 i had this same issue on a sbc rebuild all clearances were good oil pressure was fine cold when it got to operating temp 0 pressure. Switched to 10w 30 no more issues i don't understand how the cold weight made a difference but ive put 40k hard miles on it since with zero issues if that doesn't work try a 5w or 10w 40 engine oil my guess is there is excessive clearance between the new cam bearings and the aftermarket cam or bad seal on the cam thrust plate
The oil grove is in the trunion, you are basically building the same engine i am on my little channel, except i used lower compression pistons, same cam, trunions, tbss intake, very similar, i am waiting on the machine shop to balance everything, i switched to gen 4 rods.
What road course was that at the beginning of the video?
I bet your neighbors love you 😮
It's alive
Is it, though?
You're in good company here. lol
Only prob I have had on sum ls engines is the thrust bearing, one damaged cause of oil sending unit started leaking during break in
thought you might lap the valves while you worked on the head
Same thing happened to me was the oil pump
You should get eletric fans from an 05 or newer it makes for so much more room for activities and im going to start shimming the oil pump for a little more pressure
Why would you need more oil pressure? 40psi at hot idle on these engines. 80psi at redline hot. 60psi just regular driving. The specification from GM for the lowest is around 11 psi i think. What issues are you trying to avoid ?
@nathanstout7763 I don't recall ever seeing 40 psi at hot idle maybe like 30 but mine is down to like 20 which is probably fine but I'm not really trying to live near or on the bare minimum and I have never seen 80psi either so I'm just talking about swimming like .100 basically the same as the millings high pressure oil pump and don't see any downside to a little more pressure
Pretty sure we can find a 4L80e for you to do a "flawless" rebuild on, in case boost comes a-callin'.
...and a transfer case adapter, and a wiring harness, and a computer reprogram....
Hey quick question did u rebuild ur Escalade motor or u get one from a salvage yard
Suspect dog bone and cam bearings, did you replace and get those right 👍🖐️
I did replace those and did get them right! I covered the real reason in the video, it was a dumb mistake but not because I missed the dogbone or misalinged the cam bearings - the cam bearings were the only thing I could have reused!
Was it the barbell?
Power washing ok. When I was in the army I cleaned my M16 by putting it under a steaming hot shower. Was I court marshalled? No. At inspection I was commended for having the cleanest weapon in the company.
I just know there's a double entendre in here somewhere...

I hope you replaced the cam retainer plate if you re-use the original plate it doesn't seal loses oil pressure at the front of the cam!
I’d say those cam bearings might be the wrong size as gm changed the size in late 5.7
20thou difference and the cam bearings are allocated a certain journal location which is on the inside of the bearing box

lots of respect for doing all this work. but pressure washing all those parts without instant break clean afterwards to prevent flash rust, literally gave me anxiety. like i said, respect tho for massive project.
Oh, if you watch the rest of the videos your respect will probably go away, lol. But I don't know about using brake cleaner to prevent flash rust - brake cleaner evaporates and doesn't leave much behind? I like to hose stuff down with WD-40 to prevent flash rust - it's cheap and effective. Not everything gets caught on camera...
@@FlawlessPlanGarage yeah wd40 works too
Brake clean would dry it out and stop the rust aswell

Flawless Plans cylinder bore be like \/
among other things...
Did you verify with a mechanical gauge?
I did not - I didn't have an M16-1/8 NPT adapter available.
Look at new oil censor if no noise
I did put a new oil pressure sender on when I rebuilt the engine - what happened to the bearings next would indicate it was a real problem :(
Damn......as soon as i saw the cylinder walls and your decision not to bore it i clicked out of the vid 😂😂😂
It makes an ant's pubes of a difference.
I have never heard of someone having a bearing from the rocker arms come apart i mean those look nice and are probably better but probably would have made no difference
Mine came apart, cleaned out all the needles bearing. Lucky no issue, most washed to the oil pan. Replaced the rocker.
Bearings
Oil is fine
just ball hone it and send it
you should have got it bored and put new pistons rings and bearings do it right or don't do it
Some gloves actually cover all the fingers.
Sounds expensive! Lol
What is up with the Beast?
Not much progress over the summer - got too busy trying, and failing, to keep the normal cars running
Oh snap. I really hope the gauge is wrong.
Spoiler alert for Part 2: the gauge is not wrong.
@@FlawlessPlanGarage oh nooooo! Hurry up and get that thing edited and posted! 😄
Melling oil pump. Problem solved

That's an annoying sound.
