LS Engine Rebuild - 3 more ways to FAIL (and succeed?) - pt 2

  • It's time for a budget LS engine rebuild! I'm refreshing the LQ9 LS 6.0 Gen III engine in my 2002 Cadillac Escalade, and as usual, this Flawless Plan isn't likely to go the way I intend...
    In part 1, I did an engine rebuild and everything seemed to go along swimmingly, until it lost oil pressure about 100 miles in.
    Today in part 2, I'll tear it down, see what happened, and try to push this rock uphill until my daily driver is running again. Or die trying.
    Part 1: • How NOT to do a budget...

      I seen this comment before I watched the video and thought you were exaggerating. You weren’t. I can build these in my sleep. He doesn’t need to prime it or any other BS. Turn the key and start it.
      These guys that think they’re priming the oil system by cranking it over for oil pressure is idiotic. It does more harm than good.

      That amount of fiberyou found in the pickup tube had to have been from a piece of paper towel that was hiding somewhere. For that to have been just stray fibers , the inside of your engine would have looked like mold was growing on it.

  • @bobbywalter5320
    @bobbywalter5320 7 месяцев назад +3

    I would wager ...Blue paper shop towel is what killed it. A piece ripped off and you didnt see it. It eventually choked flow off enough....and the result is what you experienced. My son will be watching this. Your documentation of this is outstanding reality. Thank you.

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz Месяц назад

      I just commented the same thing. That's too much gunk to be from stray fibers.

    Much respect to you for showing your mistakes so others can learn from them. It takes a real Man to lay his struggles out RUclips for all see and critique. As someone who's engine builds never go right first try either.. it's reassuring to see im not alone. Awesome video. 🍻

Glad you aren’t gapping for boost, I didn’t understand why but assumed you were boost adding later. Glad the weather was ideal for engine pulling and installs. Works out that way just to make mistakes that much better.

    Thanks for sharing. I have done a few engine rebuilds in the past. This is the extreme of what can go wrong. I have heard of things like this happening to some people even when they do everything right and it still goes bad. Thanks for showing all the findings of why, and how, when things didn’t work out. I myself any looking to rebuild my 2004 2500 Silverado and not buying new.

    Just hit subscribe i watched the fist oart and now half-way through the 3rd build. I always take my block to Bob Lane in Gastonia NC to have them cleaned new cam bearing and plugs. They check the block hone and then i just use a mic and put it all together. The extra money is well worth it on a budget.

    • @FlawlessPlanGarage
      @FlawlessPlanGarage  11 месяцев назад

      I did have the block cleaned by the machine shop after the hone on the (2nd? 3rd? attempt, but something persisted somewhere! Maybe the oil cooler, even though I flushed that by hand as well?

    New builds usually have sparkes….its just all the parts introducing themselves to eachother….just change the oil again in 500mi then again at 1000mi and the final at 1500 mi i would have ran 30w rotella diesel oil during those first 1500mi….

    Believe it or not it's those red shop towels. It's not a piece it's the Fuze it leaves behind. Same thing happend to me on a 454 rebuild. Micro fiber only now! My oil filter was full of red Fuze when I cut it open. It sucks.

  • @Ramztothaz
    @Ramztothaz 11 месяцев назад +4

    no way that red rag left that much lint in the engine. Something much larger must have been in the pan. I would like to have a look at the oil filter.

      Those red rags leave tons of lint, I did a big block olds years ago, had to completely clean the block out after using them all over it. Was a mess.

  • @Cultofpersonality09129
    @Cultofpersonality09129 9 месяцев назад

    You’re going to have some glitter on the first oil change. Make sure you change the cam retaining plate…. The seal gets hard and will kill your oil pressure. Changing the barbell isn’t a bad idea and modding the factory oil pump for more pressure will make a drastic change.
    Turning the engine over to build oil pressure is wrong. So many things are turning to long with no lubricantion. It can’t build enough pressure because the engine isn’t spinning fast enough.
    Just start it up. You’ll have oil pressure in 5 seconds. Lifter will be noisy for a minute until they pump up… they’re noisy to begin with.

    I used to complain about getting a used 6.0 here in sf Bay Area but with the last month I picked up 2. The 1st one I got as a short block for $440. Turns out the crank was bad but everything else checks out. Then a few days ago I picked up a long block for $200. Again crank is bad but it has gen 4 rods and pistons. Had to get a little more aggressive and it worked out

  • @nodaklojack

    I think the fibers were gasket scrapings. Do you plug off holes when cleaning surfaces? Do you run a vacuum near razor blade edge as your scraping?

  • @schrank17
    @schrank17 4 месяца назад

    There is no way there was that much lint from just cleaning the cylinders. Plus, most of the left over lint would probably be burnt or blown out the exhaust. Unfortunately, somehow, something did get stuck. Maybe you plugged the pickup tubes to keep junk out and didn't remove it?
    I feel your pain. I've had a few engine boo boos myself and they are never fun.
    P.S. Don't trust plasti-guage. It's close but usually off enough to make me not use it. I "C" mic the crank journal and then dial bore gauge the bearings after torquing the down.

    Wow brother. That sucked but you are right. $ 500 is alot better then 14 or $1500 plus prob more machine work. I'm working towards my first swap. I am going to swap a 6.0 into my 03' Crown Vic. I now know why you can't use red shop towels. I kept saying to myself every time someone sId don't use them. I ordered lintless kwipe cloths.

    my father's engine run full of sand, idk what you did wrong but it look like old shreded gasket piece or loose gunk from inside somewhat came out after being loosen up, but for some reason kept hidden until you ran it then clogged the pickup tube. im pretty sure your towel dust did not destroyed your engine. its sad that you saw your oil pressure was off too late because your gauge work fine,

    Oof... 73rd times the charm, or not. That was like 6 seconds of no oil pressure. They make a tool that goes into the hole past the threads, then expands and clears the threads on the way out so you dont send chips into the cylinder. This video and the previous one was a total train wreck.
