"She a nurse? He got lucky then." Hilarious quote knowing what will happen to him.
Haha yeah true . If only he knew ...
Kathy Bates’ performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making Misery the only film based on a Stephen King novel to win an Oscar. Also Stephen King has stated that Misery is one of his top ten favorite film adaptations.
Definitely a deserved award.
The way she acts with her eyes in this movie is absolutely insane. I swear she goes walleyed at one point while ranting. It’s hilarious and terrifying.
It also made Stephen King create “Delores Claiborne” just for Kathy Bates, which is absolutely worth a reaction
@@joshuayeager3686 A must! I absolutely love that film. Eminently quotable.
She’s on another level. It’s beautifully insane.
haha omg your comments at the start are making me laugh, "he`s lucky she`s a nurse" "she seems nice" "I cant see her killing anybody" 🤣🤣
31:19 "his legs are looking better though"
me "honey..you've got a big storm comin'"
Kathy would forever become a legend after playing this role. Whenever I watch a movie and she enters, I am so happy. Because I know she is going to deliver.
Kathy Bates has to be one of the most natural actors I have ever seen, her performances are seemingly effortless.
Kathy Bates and James Caan were just amazing in this movie.
Here you want it, you want it?. Eat it, eat it till you choke!.
I love that line.
Also, let's all be grateful for the small roll played by Lauren Bacall.
That’s why this is a horror movie. There’s no make believe monsters or paranormal activity, it could really happen.
Yeah I believe horror should be defined in a lot of different ways. It shouldn't just be defined by ghosts and monsters and witches and supernatural and whatnot.
Nail on the head!
This was Kathy Bates’ breakout role that made her famous. She had been an unknown stage actress for a couple of decades and only had small film roles in the 80’s. She won a well deserved Oscar and her career skyrocketed.
I love how he always gives her the benefit of the doubt and Annie always just proves him wrong one second later LMAO.
I just love the idea of a horror story about the insane #1 fan of an artist. It's a timeless, scary thought. This movie is so good
“Here’s one big bastard of a check, give me some of your Christing money!” - What I say when I use an ATM.
In King's original concept for this story, it was a novella length (mini-novel) where Annie kills Paul after he writes Misery's return, and she uses his skin to bind the manuscript. But King said Paul turned out to be more resourceful and had a stronger will to live than he originally thought, so he turned it into a full-length novel where he survives because "Nobody wants to root for a character for a full book only to find out the pig ate him." There would have been some real irony to Paul getting fed to Misery the pig, considering how he felt about Misery Chastain!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented but I genuinely love your reaction to this. I read the book in junior high, saw the film when it came out and it does not disappoint. I agree with you it gives you a very different feeling than other horror films. Not too much gore, super heavy on the suspense and it doesn’t skimp on King’s biting sarcasm delivered perfectly by Caan. The comedic quips and comebacks are stellar.
Absolutely love this movie. Both Kathy Bates and James Caan nailed it! The book is a lot more brutal. For example she cuts off his thumb when he complains about the N missing from the typewriter. She cuts off his leg instead of hobbling him. Etc. It’s a real great read.
I’ve watched this movie many times but I only read the book once when I was about 12, never again!! My ex was called Paul, when I found out he had never seen it, we watched it together and I had fun for days quoting Annie 😂😂😂
One of my favourite books. I’ve read it at least half a dozen times and every time I do; I feel the same amount of anxiety.
If I'm remembering correctly she greets him on his birthday with a cake that she has stuck his severed thumb on top of and set alight like a birthday candle.
Btw. Annie's character backstory is in a Series called "Castle Rock" pretty crazy stuff
This movie used to scare the living shit out of me as a child and I haven't watched it since but it's most definitely a classic. Such a masterpiece
Lauren Bacall, his Agent, is a Holiday Legend herself and was married to my Distant Cousin, Humphrey Bogart
Oh wow
@@MovieFusion dang auto correct it was supposed to say Hollywood
@@mamakat114are you on mobile? 3 little dots next to the comment has an edit option. 😊
@that.ll_do_pig I am and I do know that. In the past, if I edit, the reactors "like" goes away... thank you very much though
Great reaction to Annie's escalating mania. I always wince at James Caan's acting when he crawls out of bed, you feel his agony on the floor. Your idea that Annie smashed his legs with the crowbar to increase his dependence on her is something I like the idea of. I've not read the book to know if that happened or is suggested.
Probably she did bust his legs earlier :-(
"I'm your number one fan."
Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner cameos as a helicopter pilot.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) revolver is a Colt Cobra "D" Frame .38 revolver.
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) jeep is a 1974 Jeep Cherokee S [SJ]. Paul's (James Caan) car is a 1966 Ford Mustang. Sheriff Buster's (Richard Farnsworth) car is a 1972 Chevrolet Blazer [K-5].
Lost In Adaptation Fact: While there were many minor changes from the novel, there was one major change. In the novel, Annie (Kathy Bates) cuts off Paul's (James Caan) foot to prevent him from escaping. Screenwriter William Goldman had stated that the reason he decided to adapt the book to film was because of this gruesome scene, and the effect it would have on the audience. However, Rob Reiner and Andrew Scheinman's script revision changed the method of torture to Paul getting his ankles broken with a sledgehammer. Goldman was opposed to the change until viewing the film.
Typewriter Enthusiast Fact: The typewriter that Annie (Kathy Bates) buys for Paul (James Caan) to use is a Royal Model 10 typewriter. The Royal 10 was one of the first successfully mass produced typewriters which would set the technical standard for most typewriters that would follow it. Produced between 1914 and 1934, Paul's model can be pinpointed to be from 1914 to 1923 due to the double paneled beveled glass located on both sides of the machine. Models from 1924 to 1934 had only single paneled beveled glass. The 10 model would see use well after the model was discontinued as Royal Typewriters subsidiary Rigal Rebuilt would completely refurbish and rebuild the machines after they reached the intended lifespan giving the model many more years of use well into the 1950's and 60's. Due to its mass sales and twenty year production the Royal 10 remains one of the attainable typewriters that can be picked up by collectors of the machines in the 21st Century.
I've watched so many misery reactions. but that was the best. I laughed in tears. his reactions to the various scenes in the film were simply hilarious. 10 out of 10 😂👍
Heaven to betsy Mr. Men 😂😂😂
22:19 “made his leg problem worse than it actually is.”
Everybody watching “Buddy, you have no idea what’s coming!”
Kathy Bates is one of the greatest actresses! I love her. She won Best Actress for this role! SO incredible! You are watching American Horror Story and you will see her appear in some upcoming seasons and she's amazing! This movie was so wonderful and I'm very glad you loved it!
Well my friend you just watched one of the greatest cinematic performances in history by Kathy Bates. One of the few times a horror film got recognition by award shows. She won the Oscar for this performance and she deserved it.
Yea, everybody always makes misery references back in the day growing up. Good movie for sure.
Wow very nice! Great reaction! First Children of Men (a personal favourite) and now this classic! Fun fact: Kathy Bates gave the Oscar to Anthony Hopkins for playing Hannibal Lecter, so we have one of the most evil villains (Annie Wilkes) give an award to another one hehehe
Kathy Bates acting was really good in this movie, and James Caan ,they both did so well!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was SO MUCH FUN watching this with you !!! I've seen this movie a ton of times since its release, But watching your reactions reminded me of MY OWN when I originally saw this.
I REALLY ENJOYED it because it was realistic & genuine. PLEASE continue that, because it's what makes your channel so appealing.
👍💖😀
Cant wait for u to see miss Kathy in AHS
Such a classic. Both performances in this film are outstanding.
Kathy bates truly deserved her Oscar win for this. Btw, you should check out Fatal Attraction too. That scared the hell out of every married men.
Misery might be in my top 10 favorite movies of all time! I fuckin love it! Have wanted to see this reaction for so long!
Paul's legs are from the crash. But obviously, Annie makes it worse later on, but she had nothing to do with the initial injuries
"Bat shit crazy" - very true description of annie wilkes
Sooo excited for you to see Kathy Bates on American Horror Story: Coven
When you acknowledged you weren’t familiar with the movie, (and probably thought you were about to watch just another film),…I was thinking OMG, you have NO idea!! 😂
The first time i watched this i had no idea they were gonna show the hobbling. I have to close my eyes now when i get to that part.
She’s great in Fried Green Tomatoes. Another great movie.
Dolores Claiborne is Kathy Bates favorite career performance and another must see. It truly is Stephen King’s lost gem. check it out if you haven’t already seen it.
Great reaction! Definitely one of the best in the horror genre. If you're looking for other top-notch Stephen King adaptations, try Dolores Claiborne (Also starring Kathy Bates). It's not for the faint of heart, but excellent writing. It's more of a thriller/mystery
This movie is so good, but I love the book. It’s a fever dream of a read, but the insight to so many things, particularly Stephen Kings mindset at the point. It’s also fascinating because the way Kathy plays Annie vs how she is depicted in the book? They’re very close but Kathy, even in a role as terrifying as Annie, is so personable. You don’t like Annie, she absolutely horrifies you, but you always get the vibe that you could hang with the actor playing her. That isn’t present in the book, at all.
In the book, instead of using a sledgehammer to hobble Paul, Annie uses an axe to chop off one of his feet and then cauterize the wound with a blowtorch.
Am I the only one who cracked up when MovieFusion said after "That'll do" Paul hit Annie with the iron pig? Is this a deliberate "Babe" reference.
One of my favorite films❤ the book is even more brutal, as far as I remember😅
Your expectations for this movie are way beyond anyone could've imagined. Someone says horror movie and they immediately think monsters, ghosts, a lot of blood, and this movie... doesn't have any of that. The monster is simply a very crazy, murderous woman, and that's precissely why it's such a great movie, not just from the horror gerne. You don't need a supernatural element for a horror movie to be scary. It can terrify you even more when you know something like this can be very real, and that people like Annie Wilkes exist.
What a great reaction. Love Kathy Bates, and a great intro as you are doing AHS too.
Love that you only realized it's a King adaption when the opening credits started! There really are loads of adaptions out there haha
"Death by typewriter."
I don’t live in the middle of nowhere (about 7 miles to nearest town) and the roads could be covered for weeks if we got too much snow. Of course we hardly ever get snow here anymore.
Oh man! Steven Kings Dolores Claiborne was written FOR Kathy Bates in the 90s. I LOOOVE that dark movie. I say this because Kathy Bates becomes an American Horror Story regular very soon. ❤❤❤❤
Now that you’ve seen Misery, Stand by Me, & The Shawshank Redemption, you gotta watch (or rewatch) one of the best episodes of Family Guy, Season 7 Episode 15: Three Kings. You won’t regret it 😭
Honestly, can't remember if I have seen that one, so I'll have to go check it out soon!
@@MovieFusionI think you would really enjoy Carrie too if you haven’t already seen it
"His legs are looking better though" Me- "Not for long"
MovieFusion. I love you . I'm your #1 fan!
Kind of hits different now, huh? LMAO
Great reaction, as always. You are def one of my favs!
But I'm his number 1 fan :-/
Actually, when he’s typing towards the end and you mentioned he’s misspelling words but doesn’t care, Paul isn’t misspelling words but rather the typewriter is missing the “n” key. I stopped the video to look at what he was typing and those words were missing the “n.”
Great reaction!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE your reactions to this movie.
#RIP James Caan from ELF and nominated for the Oscar for The Godfather. He was superb in the original Rollerball and tv movie Brian's Song. The actress who played the Sherrif's wife passed recently and was well known as Charlottle's former MIL in Sex and the City tv series.
In the book, Paul didn’t burn “Misery’s Return.” He faked it. He said he could never burn another one of his books. It was released and it was his biggest hit. Also, Annie didn’t die in the house. She dragged herself out to the barn and they found her dead with a chainsaw in her hand. :-/
This is a personal fave of mine and i LOVE your reactions to it 😂 just brilliant!
IMO, THE BEST Stephen King adaptation.
I know you and a lot of your audience are probably too young to realize that lady playing James Caan's editor is the iconic Lauren Bacall, who starred in the classic Casablanca and was married to Humphrey Bogart. Definitely a film you should check out😁
I got to see the stage production of Misery in NYC starring Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf back in 2016. It wasn't anything all that great, though the mechanics of the production were pretty cool, and the hobbling scene sure was done just like in the movie. Just not the most engaging show overall that lacked real tension, but I wish I could have seen several times over. And no matter what, I'll always hold dear that I got to see Bruce Willis perform live.
Lol, a lot of us probably 50 & older know how to use a Bobby pin or a credit card to unlock a door 😂😂😂
I should probably learn it just in case lol
It only works on really crappy locks like you find on a bedroom door.
@MovieFusion definitely the credit card lol. When I was on the radio, my Boss let me in to the locked room of old Country, that I was raised with. He couldn't leave the key, but he knew I knew how to get in with a credit card. He was the Best!!
Dude, guess what? Kathy Bates is also in American Horror Story! You'll see her when you start reacting to season 3 (Coven). Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett... A trio of amazing actresses all in the same season! You just wait!
I love Misery so much it is prob my fave Stephen King movie alongside Christine and Stand by me. Also if you wanna see more horror movies with similar themes (crazy fans /stalkers , celebrity obsession) then i highly recomend the Anime horror movie Perfect Blue from 1997. That movie was also quite ahed of it's time with the themes of fandom and fans and how they treat there fave celebritys.
Loved you're reaction 😊.
They weren't spelling errors. The typewriter was missing an 'n'.
During her Oscars acceptance speech, Kathy said, "I would like to thank Jimmy Caan and apologize publicly for the ankles." 😂😂
I couldn't watch this whole reaction bc a part of this movie freaks me out. But i enjoyed that parts you watched!
Hi, if you want to see another good thriller about a person who is obsessed by a celebrity, check out Play Misty for Me (1971)
Directed and the main character
by Clint Eastwood, it is also a very good movie.
And then the great Swedish thriller The Hunt (2012) with the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, who also made a name for himself in Hollywood. But this movie has a different theme
.

In the novel Annie did chop off one of Paul's legs (beneath the knee). Novel Paul was far more traumatized than movie Paul, having continuous hallucinations of Annie crawling out of the grave and coming for him even after killing her, and also was plagued by a lifetime of phantom pain from his missing leg.
Stephen King confessed that two major events from his life inspired the story of Misery: the first one was his near-fatal car accident (which broke his femurs and also made him very fearful he could never finish the Dark Tower series as promised if he died early), the second one was how Martin Chapman, rabid fan and murderer of John Lennon, had originally chosen King as his idol/target but lost interest and switched to Lennon. There *are* people like Annie Wilkes out there whose mentality is like a bomb, and a bomb only need to go off once to destroy someone.
James Caan was just as good as Kathy Bates. Both Amazing.
James Caan was such a renowned and respected character actor by the time this film was released and Kathy Bates was basically completely unknown. It was considered a bit wild and controversial for such a major film to have such a huge star in James Caan play second to an unknown like Kathy. Truly an iconic film. The horror elements aren’t as visible or visceral as modern horror films but the themes and atmosphere definitely fit into our modern sensibilities extremely well because of obsessed stan culture.
This was so much fun watching the full reaction on Patreon! I super enjoy your content and watching you react to some of my favorite shows and movies! Thank you so much for sharing these with us all 🎉❤
Misery is the best, Kathy Bates rules in this movie.
Your reaction was funny as helll 😂
They aren’t spelling errors in the book. The typewriter doesn’t have an “n.”
Definitely one of the best!! I think because the film is so based on the fact this could happen is what makes it scary. Then you have the great performances given, is why it’s just chefs kiss of horror movies.
If an alien asked what a movie is, this is in the top 3
When it comes to people freaking out at writers over certain decisions in a show I think they should just realize that we’re all human and it shouldn’t be the end all be all.
Ah. Thank you for bringing me back to this classic
This is the most terrifying movie I have ever seen.
Hysterical! Your reaction is perfect. HA. This movie is so good. Batshit crazy indeed. Glad you enjoyed it.
It wasn't spelling errors, he's too articulate, and Annie would know something was off...when she brought the typewriter in she said she got a deal on it bc it was missing the "N". After Paul was redoing the book so Misery could live, Annie got so excited reading it in his room, she jumped up and wanted him to finish the next chapter, and she said "I'll even fill in all the "N's" for you, lol. So what you saw was correct spelling, but nothing had "N's".
Great reaction. Make sure to check out the great Kathy Bates in her favorite career performance Dolores Claiborne. It’s another Stephen King novel adaptation that was written with Kathy Bates in mind for playing the role. The movie doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Thanks for sharing and take care until next time.
Great review of this classic film!
Great reaction! I'm your number one fan. Lol. Just kidding. 😂
Very good movie. The car crash scene is identical to the dead zone where you know something bad is gonna happen
After many months I'm watching your movie reaction again 😊😊. From India.. Good movie।
It was fun watching you give her the benefit of the doubt and then you slowly realizing she was cray cray! Lol. Great movie
The book by Stephen king
I haven’t seen this one for awhile. I love the intensity and craziness of this movie…Kathy Bates was amazing 😂 My favorite word from this movie “cockadoodie” 😂
You seem to like the horror genre…have you seen The Fall of the House of Usher or Midnight Mass series? I’m not much of a jump scare horror fan but I loved these two 🤩
Awesome vid man.
38:22
As we all know from watching Zombieland, Double Tap!
🤣😜😜
I used to have a vhs with this flick and Pet Sematary back to back…… Dark!😂❤
If you haven't seen it, another good Rob Reiner film is This is Spinal Tap.
Great reaction! 👍
19:58 After you tell your mom that she bought the wrong bag of chips from the store
LMAO
I love your reactions, I also love this movie :) ❤
Something I just noticed, she knocked him out before she broke his ankles, and she decided to wait until he woke up to actually do it, she could've done It while he was asleep if the goal was only to restrain him from running away, you can see there how fucking evil she actually is
Another King adaptation you should check out is Sometimes They Come Back.
You have to react to Dolores Claiborne. Also a Stephen King adaptation & starred by Kathy Bates. One of the greatest most underrated movies ever.
You are the first reactor I've seen to draw a line between this movie and the insanity of modern-day fandom. I guess people like Annie have always existed, but they were mostly shouting into the wind. Today such people have access to platforms that disproportionally amplify their batshit opinions and demands, making the world a worse place for creators and sane people. Anyway, I knew you would love this movie no matter what, lol.
